Natal Drums

Paul Hose - Natal Drums Education Specialist

Paul became Education Specialist for Natal in January 2011 and has spent his time writing and developing education programs that enhance the user's experience.

Continuing with that role, Paul has recorded a series of drum lessons for ModernDrummer.com and the music from this project will soon be available minus drums for readers of the website to enjoy.

The project will be available on Amazon and iTunes as well as directly from both ModernDrummer.com and nataldrums.com.

Paul has co-composed a series of Latin Samples with critically acclaimed organist, Brett Wales. This package is designed to enhance Paul's successful book, Drumset For Beginners (Alfred Music Publishing).

Paul also hosted drum clinics for Natal and in order to promote his book, Drumset For Beginners and plans to hold many more in 2013 in the UK and internationally.

Natal education specialist, Paul Hose closed 2012 by filming his first video for kit monsters.com! The video which focuses on cymbal maintenance will hopefully be online by February and is hoped to be the first of many that Paul will produce for kitmonsters.com.

MLC-Academy

The Lounge at MLC-Academy

2012 was an exciting year for MLC-Academy. Both sites in Nottingham continued to improve their public awareness by hosting free concerts, giving away some 700 free music lessons to school children and by teaching over 1000 children the joy of music thanks to funding from the Roy De Wired Foundation. Furthermore, MLC-Academy has undergone a year of research and design. The results of which will be launched in the spring of 2013.

MLC-Academy is now a registered Trinity College Exam Centre. MLC offers graded exams, undergraduate diplomas and postgraduate diplomas in music performance, music teaching and English Language. Nottingham based drummer, Paul Hose continued to be the groove mister within the funk/soul band, TI:Funk. 2012 was an extremely busy and productive year for the band - rockin' with rapper Vanilla Ice and taking centre stage at the legendary Rock City were but two of the 100+ gigs the band performed throughout the year.

Apps For Musicians Limited (A4M)

A4M is a new Company owned by Paul Hose and Apple developer, Austin Rathe. The business designs and produces high quality education and entertainment apps for the iPad and iPhone. Clients already include Natal Drums (Marshall Amplification), Alfred Music Publishing and drumming community guru, Mike Dolbear.

A4M will be previewing at the NAMM show and will be trading shortly thereafter.

50 years live and loud

I was at Wembley Arena last night for the 50 years live an loud concert - a celebration of Jim Marshall's life and his company, Marshall Amplification.

I loved it yesterday. It was so loud!!! And I'm thrilled to have been invited by Natal head honcho, Craig Glover!

Roy De Wired show

Sunday saw many of Nottingham's music scene turn out in force to entertain some 500+ people at Nottingham's Rock City in memory of the late Roy De Wired.

The event, the 2nd memorial concert, is held as a celebration of Roy's life ad the money raised is used to teach youngsters music in Roy's name.

Taking a friend's advice

It's Saturday again so I feel I should keep up this new found tradition and Blog!

Last Saturday was a turning point for me. I have been working flat out all year trying to deliver on deals won at January's NAMM show, Anaheim, CA and March's Musik Messe, Frankfurt. Between the world and I, was was exhausted and a couple of friends (who are also colleagues) had picked up on this and in very different ways had commented that my playing had suffered and I wasn't smiling.

So I decided to take action! I know (I thought) I'll take the day off - go for a bike ride! Kit duly on, ready to rock and boom - a flat tire. No problem! I'll run. Phone rings: "Don't panic but......" Turns out my eldest son was on his way to A&E having come a cropper from falling off his scooter! Anyway some 4 hours of A&E later, he's fine and I'm worn out and about to face another gig.

Due to my relief regarding my son, I was full of energy and the gig went very well. So this week I have worked just as hard but I have made time for myself. To my delight I'm sat in my garden blogging having just finished a ten mile bike ride and I feel somewhat relaxed and ready to rock tonight and tomorrow.

Being a successful musician (on any level) relies heavily on your personality. I imagine that we would all listen to a Friend's advice about pretty much anything. So do be sure that you listen to constructive criticism and try to be as objective as possible. This is very difficult for musicians as we tend to be emotive moreover than objective. But do try. People have got to want to work with you and a larger part of that will be down to your personality.

Who was it that said; "You have two ears and one mouth. Use them in that order!"? Try to do that musically too.

How many of us drummers listen to the radio? Or how many of drummers listen to the same albums over and over again? The latter is certainly not a criticism but it strikes me that not enough musicians draw inspiration from outside sources.

I'm going to show my age now and sing the praises of BBC Radio 2! The menu bar on the website should inspire you: Documentaries. Honestly, the wealth of inspiration from documentaries about the music scene in London during the sixties - listening to Michael Caine talking about hanging out with Mick Jagger just before The Rolling Stones became massive - listening to Roger Taylor (Queen) talking about the impact of Live Aid. The list goes on.

Then there are the shows. Let me list a handful.

Monday - Blues with Paul Jones and then there is Jools Holland a little later
Tuesday - Jamie Cullum's Jazz show
Wednesday - Is Soul is your thing, you have to listen to Trevor Nelson
Thursday - Bob Harris's Country show and then Steve Lamacq's rock show
Friday - Huey Morgan's show is just incredible
Saturday - Bob Harris - I can't tell you how many of Bob's shows that I have listened to whilst driving home from a gig

None of the above take in to account the incredible shows that feature daily - Chris Evans, Steve Wright, Jeremy Vine and Simon Mayo.

My point is simple: If you're serious about music you would do well to listen to as much of it as possible. If you're looking for diverse inspiration, tune in and be inspired.

Drum clinic: success

Today was a fun day! My friend and great drummer, Glenn Hallam, invited me to give a clinic at Intersales Music in Kettering and it was a complete success.

The clinic was a sell out! Glenn and I spoke about working in the modern music industry, answered questions and traded soloing ideas over a Mambo loop (taken from my forthcoming loop package: DS4B - Latin Pack.)

I then gave an afternoon of private lessons and I was impressed by each and every student that I met.

All in all, a fantastic day. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Glenn Hallam and all those at Intersales Music. If you're local to Kettering, please support them!

First Modern Drummer lesson goes live: A lesson for all aspiring musicians

After a lot of production, post production and dare I say it, thought (I know!!) my first lesson for Modern Drummer was published yesterday. Quite an achievement for a drummer from a very small part of a small city. If I take a moment to think about my dreams back then and compare them with my achievements today, well I feel somewhat proud. Proud because all of the musicians involved are local and proud to have been asked to produce the lessons by Natal and Modern Drummer in the first place.

How does a musician get these deals?

I am often asked by by peers & students; "How do you get these deals?" The answer is simple but the journey is long: personal relationships. I have spent years putting myself out there in the thick of my part of the music industry. This has included countless trips to New York, Los Angeles, Frankfurt, London, Marseille, Singapore and more besides. Like any personal relationship you might have in your private life, the same rules apply in your professional life. There is no viable alternative to shaking someone's hand and getting to know the keys players in your field of expertise. However we must all embrace technology as 99% of our customers already do.

Following the habits

Many successful people and entrepreneurs subscribe to the seven habits as laid down by Dr. Steven Covey. Let's be positive, let's be proactive! Try to actually realise what we could achieve. I try (and sometimes I falter) to remind myself of this every day. It isn't easy.

I spent the day in Curly Lead studios, Nottingham today working on a new educational product.

Each day I edge forward. Some days it feels like a leap forward and others, I slide back. It is however amazing to see an idea come to fruition.

I've been tremendously busy this year and it's fair to say that my social media has suffered.

The main focus of this year has been research and design, planning and building primarily for MLC Academy.

So far as I'm concerned as a player, I've never been busier which is my only valid reason for a severe lack of blogging. It's ironic: the busier one becomes the less time one has to shout about it.

So this blog is a much needed kick! There is a lot on the horizon for me, paulhose.com and MLC-Academy.

Drumset for Beginners (book) by Paul Hose and Jim Farey today received yet another positive review from German Periodical.

Using the free translation tool provided by Google (so please allow for errors) it reads:

Beginner books for the drum set already in abundance, but the work is published in the alfred publishing something really special.

The two authors are experienced and extremely talented drummer, the teachers have to know everything collected on drums. The book is divided into five main chapters. In Chapter 1 of the beginner, the base is closer to the drum playing: note values, rests, chart-reading, first grooves and fill-ins. Discussed are also the first pro-independence or Koordinationsübungen.

The entire subject matter is clear and also provides extremely entertaining. In Chapter 2 the students have already learned interpretations of note values (reading exercises) on the snare drum and the drum set in conjunction with grooves and fill-ins. Again, there are more exercises to independence in combination with eighth and sixteenth notes.

Chapter 3 is devoted to the triplet: the student learns the Shuff-Groove and the Jazz Ride Pattern. Even the broom game is made clear under the microscope. In
Chapter 4, Clave and the corresponding grooves, such as Cha-cha, Bossa Nova, Mambo, Mozambique, Samba, Songo, 6 \ 8-Afro Cuban Bolero and treated. In the last chapter of the vortex and the flame are analyzed.

Very helpful are the references for further reading in each chapter and the nice layout. For any interested teachers, this work is recommended, just! It is well thought out and very creatively and constructively established.

The book is also accompanied by a CD for Playalongs the related charts, you also can not print PDF files. Conclusion: for every dedicated teacher a fantastic addition to the existing teaching literature.

Anfängerbücher für das Drumset gibt es schon zur Genüge, aber dieses im AlfredVerlag erschienene Werk ist wirklich etwas Besonderes.

Die zwei Autoren sind erfahrene Drummer und äußerst begabte Lehrer die alles Wissenswertes zum Thema Schlagzeug zusammengetragen haben. Das Buch gliedert sich in fünf Hauptkapitel. In Kapitel 1 wird dem Anfänger die Basis des Schlagzeugspiels nähergebracht: Notenwerte, Pausen, Chart- Reading, erste Grooves und Fill-Ins. Besprochen werden auch erste Unabhängigkeits- bzw. Koordinationsübungen.

Der gesamte Unterrichtsstoff wird klar und auch äußerst unterhaltsam vermittelt. Für jeden interessierten Lehrer ist dieses Werk einfach nur zu empfehlen! Es ist gut durchdacht und äußerst kreativ und konstruktiv aufgebaut. Dem Buch liegt zudem eine CD für Playalongs die dazugehörigen Charts bei, die man auch noch als PDF-Dateien ausdrucken kann.

Fazit: für jeden engagierten Lehrer eine fantastische Ergänzung zur bereits bestehenden Unterrichtsliteratur.

A unique approach to learning drums.

You might be forgiven for assuming that this is another drum book for beginners, and whilst that is the case it's actually really aimed at the person teaching them.

Designed to give a thorough understanding of the essentials, the book guides both student and teacher through a wealth of information from basic beats and fills to jazz, Latin rhythms and chart reading. Throughout, the authors recommend classic drum books that can be used to explore each area further with things concluding with a selection of playalong tracks and charts to put everything into context.

This is a fairly niche area for drum books and one that's not really been explored or catered for, and in this respect it fulfils its objective well whilst perhaps attempting to cover more ground than is important to the average beginner. That said, any teacher that manages to guide their student through the material presented will have set them up with an excellent set of musical skills. (PR)
