Fresh on the heels of the successful SharePoint Saturday event, the Chicago SharePoint User Group has their next meeting on June 25th at the Microsoft Office in Downers Grove. This meeting has a Best Practices theme. I will be reprising my Elevation of Privilege and Impersonation talk from the Best Practices Conference in 2008 and Shawn Shell will be presenting on [placeholder].

Best Practices Conference

Once again, Mindsharp is co-sponsoring the Best Practices conference. The latest event will be held August 24-26 in Reston, VA (outside of Washington, DC).

The speaker list is finalized, so be watching for more details. We have popular speakers returning as well as some new faces. All the sessions are new (or updated with new content). In addition, we have three tracks dedicated to Best Practices for SQL Server!

SharePoint Saturday – Chicago

After circling the country (New York, Washington, Virginia, Atlanta, San Francisco), SharePoint Saturday is coming to the best city in the country – Chicago!

Thanks to the work of Kris Wagner and Michael (Mr. Saturday) Lotter, SPS Chicago will be held in beautiful downtown Chicago. Minutes from shopping (the Mag Mile, State Street). Minutes from nature (Millennium Park, Grant Park, Navy Pier). Minutes from sports (Blackhawks [probably going all the way!], White Sox) and most importantly, minutes from dozens of locations for SharePint. :)

SharePoint Saturday – Chicago will be held June 13th at Tribune Tower (435 N Michigan Ave). Registration is now open. The speaker lineup is impressive: Darrin Bishop (MVP), Todd Bleeker(MVP), Rob Bogue (MVP), Matt Bremer, George Durzi, Chris Geier, Becky Isserman, Todd Klindt (MVP), Leonard Mwangi (MVP), Steve Pietrek, Asif Rehmani (MVP), and more!

Donate Canned Goods – Get One Hour with a Speaker

Dux Raymond Sy, the organizer of SharePoint Saturday DC, is hosting a charitable raffle. Donate canned goods at the event (or ship them to him ahead of time) and the top 20 donors will receive one hour with a speaker. I’m one of the speakers, so be sure to bring a development question!

I’ll be doing a pre-event webcast. Look for it on the site next week.

Advanced Developer Workshop: Data

Are you a developer who is familiar with SharePoint but is struggling to build a “solution” on the SharePoint framework? Where do you store data? How do you show data so it looks like SharePoint? How do you make your data look like the rest of your branded SharePoint site?

Just because you’re leveraging the SharePoint platform, all of the typical application questions still need to be answered. Is your configuration information secure? Is your data secure?

I’m excited to announce a 2-day Advanced Developer Workshop for Presenting, Consuming, Storing and Processing Data (Advanced Dev Workshop: Data). This is not a typical classroom experience, rather an interactive, extensive hands-on workshop. It is being offered both live in a classroom (in Minneapolis) and on-line. Every student, including on-line students, get their own virtual environment! (If you attend in Minneapolis, you can rub elbows during lunch with Bill English and his search administration and troubleshooting class.)

Speaking at Indy Code Camp 2009

The return of Code Camp to Indianapolis is near! On Saturday, May 16, 2009, from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, IndyNDA presents Indy Code Camp.

The continuing goal of the Code Camps series is to provide an intensive developer-to-developer learning experience that is fun and technically stimulating. The primary focus is on delivering programming information and sample code that can be used immediately. The event is free for attendees. All slides, manuals and demo code are provided to attendees.

I will be presenting two sessions:

Free Instructor-Led Introductory Course in SharePoint Development

There are many resources for developers who are trying to get started in SharePoint. But most all of them are self-study. At Mindsharp, we feel that instructor-led training is a better choice for many developers. So, we are introducing a “micro-course” to help those hands-on learners!

The “Hands-On Introduction to SharePoint Development” course lets you experience the Mindsharp On-line training environment and learn about the SharePoint platform for developers. This on-line micro-course uses the same virtual environment and same instructors as our regular courses. All you need is an internet connection and a phone line.

If you have been on the fence about using SharePoint, or about on-line classes, I encourage you to give it a try. All it costs is half of a day.
