Brazil is no stranger to expensive gaming consoles. When the PlayStation 3 officially launched there last year, its asking price was R$1999, or roughly $1,130 USD at then-current exchange rates. The PlayStation Portable has finally also officially launched, and it too will likely induce sticker shock to those tempted to purchase it.

Dubbed the PSP System 3010, it appears to be a localized version of our beloved handheld. As can be seen on Sony Style's Brazilian website, the console costs R$1299, or approximately $776 USD. While people can import the handheld from other countries, those are not officially supported by Sony and by law can only come with a 3-month warranty. So it appears the people of Brazil finally have a form of every PlayStation console that they can purchase locally.

Crysis 2, the sequel to the bane of graphics cards everywhere, is scheduled for release next month. It has online play and is being published by EA - this usually means an online portion that requires a separate purchase if the game is bought used. However, that appears to not be the case with this title.

While at a recent event in New York, GamerTagRadio was able to field a few questions to a developer from Crytek. They confirmed that Crysis 2 will not require an online pass in order to play multiplayer. Crytek is in the EA Partners program, and because of this they were given the option to include the pass in their game. This occurred during the early stages of the online pass, so Crytek did not want their game to become a beta test of sorts for the program. The developer also stated that Crytek concluded that because many console gamers may have yet to experience a Crysis game, this sort of system would serve as a deterrent between the players and the game's online modes. The company is looking to have a long-running online portion of Crysis 2, so an online pass was ultimately decided against. Gamers everywhere who may have planned on renting or buying this game secondhand are likely breathing a sigh of relief right now.

Crysis 2 releases on March 22nd/25th in North America and Europe respectively.

The PlayStation Phone Xperia Play has been known in the public space for what seems like forever. When Sony finally revealed the device, they were quick to dish out the specifications of the phone. Every detail had been divulged - except the price. A potential unlocked price has been spotted online, and may come as quite the sticker shock for some.

As seen on play.com, the Xperia Play is currently available for pre-order for the princely sum of £519.99. This equates to approximately $840 USD/€614, although UK prices are generally higher. It should not be forgotten that this is the unlocked version of the phone, not tied to any phone carrier and as such not cost-subsidized. It isn't too far off from the price of other unlocked high-end smartphones, so hopefully this means that the on-contract price will be in the $200-$300 price range. So, those of you who want the GSM version of the phone, or otherwise do not want/are ineligible to extend your contract with your current carrier, this may be the price you will have to pay come launch day. The rest of us will likely wait until we can get our hands on the subsidized version. The listing also notes a release date of March 28th, which falls in line with the European launch as stated by Sony earlier. Stay tuned to PlayStation LifeStyle for more on the Xperia Play as it develops.

This generation of consoles has been quite the wild ride so far, with the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 neck-and-neck now in terms of overall sales. The deciding factor in someone's purchase used to be third-party exclusives, something which Sony believes is bad for the games industry.

As spotted on ScrawlFX, Senior Brand Manager for MLB 11: The Show Scott McCarthy took some time to discuss his feelings regarding third-party exclusives. When asked about the recent trend of fewer and fewer of these games being locked down to a single platform, Scott explained Sony's strategy:

We work very closely with our 3rd parties publishers, not necessarily to lock down games exclusively, but to lock up exclusive parts of games.

An example Mr. McCarthy gave was the mega-hit Batman: Arkam Asylum, where Sony locked in Joker as a playable character exclusive to the PlayStation 3. Defending his stance on using exclusive portions of the game rather than the entire game itself, he stated that "When you make a title exclusive, you limit its promotional power; we don’t want to do that. We want games to be as big as possible — it’s great for the industry." It should be noted that he is talking about third-party titles, and not first-party. So do you feel Mr. McCarthy is correct? Is exclusive content, rather than exclusive titles, the best way for the industry to go when it comes to third-party games? Let us know in the comments below, and stay tuned to PlayStation LifeStyle for all your gaming industry news.

The original Two Worlds game had some nice ideas, but the overall game was buggy and lacking in execution. After three and a half years, the sequel Two Worlds II has finally been released. But has enough been done to turn the series' level of quality around, or is this more of the same glitchy, contrived mess that was so long ago? Find out in our review.

The game starts out with a decent cinematic beginning with a bird soaring high over a vast landscape. Thrust into the midst of a story where the lead protagonist is a known hero trapped in the evil lord Gandohar's fortress, you are saved by, of all beings, Orcs, while your sister is left behind. One important thing to note is that you are not able to pick your hero's gender or race - you are a male human, and have only a few choices when it comes to face, skin and hair color and style.

The story is definitely not too compelling - you have to save your sister as well as the world from the evil Gandohar's grasp. Along the way you'll meet various characters, many of whom are not integral to the main plot. Then again, with this being an open-world RPG, side quests are most welcome and numerous. Some of the sub-plots do seem a bit unbelievable, such as your character willing to part with a large sum of Auras, the world's currency, after listening to only a few sentences from a complete stranger.

The voice acting in the original Two Worlds was notoriously horrible, to the point that it was so bad it was funny. Thankfully, the voice acting is tolerable in this sequel, though it is not one of the strong points of the game. In particular, the lead character is essentially monotone in his delivery. He sounds like an extremely jaded person, even despite his extraordinary circumstances in which he finds himself.

Bad voice acting aside, the rest of the audio work is well done. When out in the desert, you can hear the high-pitched warning signs of predators nearby, or the ominous crow of vultures waiting for something to die. Villages and settlements contain the sounds of people going about their business such as sweeping their patio or selling wares, though the latter occasionally have peddlers acting like modern-day salespeople, which is completely off-putting given the setting.

Graphically, the game is utterly average, though the world of Antaloor does have its moments of beauty, such as on the top of a seaside cliff or in the wilds of the savannah. The world is also absolutely massive - you will travel via horseback or teleportation a lot. But rough textures always seem to crop up to ruin the party and, at least on this reviewer's PlayStation 3, graphical artifacts crop up to an often insane degree after staying in an area for too long. Going inside a house and coming back out seems to alleviate the problem for a while, but seeing a tree's branch stretch out into the ground as a one long triangle that you can walk through is a rather glaring issue.

Beyond the graphical issues, the GRACE rendering engine that SouthPeak Games used is serviceable for most of your adventures, however the framerate often stutters when in settlements. Thankfully, this issue does not seem to present itself very often when in combat, so it is not a huge detractor from enjoying the game. Once you leave settlements and enter the wild, the engine's depth of field, or rather the overuse of the effect, becomes very noticeable. You can only see clearly for approximately 40 or 50 feet before everything is blurry. Yet while running around with a ranged weapon such as a bow and arrow, your character will often spot an enemy clear across a valley, and if you do decide to target it you are shooting rather accurately at a blob. Of course, once you hit that enemy it will usually run towards you, so your vision will not suffer too much from this effect. continue reading >>

Duke Nukem Forever has been in and out of development for, well, forever, relatively speaking. According to current developer Gearbox Software, its campaign will also last forever, again, relatively speaking.

Your typical first-person shooter only has a single player campaign length of around 4-6 hours. Well, CEO of Gearbox Software Randy Pitchford recently revealed on GTTV that Duke Nukem Forever's campaign will last 16-18 hours for the average playthrough, or as he put it, "it's like three or four Call of Dutys, right?" Of course, quantity does not always equate to quality, but Mr. Pitchford assured us that "The game will speak for itself. I love it." Time will tell if the game that almost became vaporware will live up to the hype, but you can expect to read our take on the game when it finally launches on May 3rd in the US and May 6th everywhere else.

DC Universe Online released to nice reviews and even better sales. But it looks as if the only sales that will allow gamers to play the game will have to be new, unactivated copies only.

The folks over at Lazygamer had a hunch regarding using this game on a second PS3 system, and it turns out their worst fears were true. Sony Online Entertainment recently elaborated on how the game's physical disc is tied to the user's account:

Once the PSN key has been consumed with a disk it cannot be resold/replayed with the second user adding a sub – only the original consumer can use that acct...Disk and account are one.

You read that right, reselling this disc after activating the online key that it comes packaged with will turn the disc basically useless to anyone but the original key redeemer. This also includes other accounts on the same system, though a clarification has yet to be made regarding sub accounts on the original master PSN account. Is this the wrong direction for console MMOs to go? Does the second-hand market even hurt an MMO's bottom line? Stay connected with PlayStation LifeStyle for more on this story as it unfolds.

The gaming world was shaken (though perhaps not too unexpectedly) by the news that the Guitar Hero franchise has been effectively ended. Competing developer Harmonix caught wind of this downfall, and have released a statement in an attempt to calm any fears fans of the Rock Band series may have.

As spotted on the Rock Band forums, Developer John Drake stated that the team was "sad to hear" the news, and that their "thoughts are with those who are losing their jobs." He also mentions that the "discontinuation of Guitar Hero is discouraging news for fans of the band game genre," also acknowledging that retail sales of both series of games have slowed over time. But the company has remained "focused on building a robust digital platform for music gaming and have recently crested 2,500 songs available for play within Rock Band 3." Mr. Drake goes further to explain that Harmonix is "looking forward to the imminent release of the Fender Squier Stratocaster Guitar Controller, a fully functional guitar which doubles as a Rock Band Pro controller." The Rock Band Network is also set to undergo a relaunch, which will apparently allow for bands of all sizes to get their content up for sale on the platform in a different way than before. The posting ends as such:

It’s been a wild battle of the bands since 2007, but we respect and appreciate all of the hard work and innovation of our peers who have shared the music gaming space with us, and we look forward to rocking in the future.

So, will a relaunch of the RBN and continued focus on digital content save Harmonix from suffering from the same fate as Guitar and DJ Hero, or has their recent departure from MTV Games/Viacom already sealed their fate? The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was revealed back in December during the Spike VGAs. While some small details have been slowly revealed, one of the biggest changes to the game will be the lack of a traditional class system. Bethesda has explained their choice to do away with what is typically a staple in RPGs, and you can read all about it after the break.

Speaking during a special edition podcast with GameInformer, Director Todd Howard stated that the classless system implemented in Skyrim will result in a more natural way for players to experience the game:

What we found in Oblivion - you start the game, you pick your race and you play for a while. Our intent was: you played for a while, you got to figure out some skills, and then depending on how you play... one of the characters asks you 'okay, what kind of class do you want to be? Here's my recommendation based on how you've been playing...And sort of our thought process was, what if that guy never asked that? I was perfectly happy right before then, ya know, I was just playing the game and skills were going up, so we just got rid of that. You just play, and your skills go up as you play and the higher your skill, the more it affects your leveling. So it's a really, really nice elegant system that kind of self-balances itself.

While there are still races of characters in the game, with no set class system it may provide more freedom for what kind of skillset players utilize. Certain skills can also level up to a point where you can earn perks, which are special abilities not unlike abilities that a classful character system might contain. Howard continued his explanation, stating that with the scope of their games picking a class even after playing the game for a while is not as easy as one would think:

What we found in Oblivion is people would play, and even though they played for a half hour and then they picked their class, it's still - in the scheme of the games we make - not enough time to really understand all the skills and how they work. So people would play, and the general pattern would be they'd play for like, three hours and then 'oh I picked the wrong skills, I'm going to start over...' They weren't necessarily upset about that, but to us, someone who's making a game you're like... 'is there a way we can solve that? Is there a better way of doing it?' And we think this is it.

Time will tell if this idea will work in a series such as The Elder Scrolls, but you can stay connected with PlayStation LifeStyle for more on this game as the news develops.

Demon's Souls was quite a success for From Software/Atlus, and definitely warranted a sequel. A while back, a trademark filing was spotted for what could be a potential sequel to one of 2009's best RPGs, and its name, along with a few details, have finally been revealed.

As spotted in the latest issue of Japanese magazine Famitsu, the game's official title is in fact Dark Souls. It remains a spiritual successor to Demon's Souls. So expect a completely different world and story compared to Demon's Souls. A major change in this title is a heavy emphasis on exploration - all fields are seamless, and whatever you see in the landscape you can eventually travel to. So every castle or fortress on the horizon can be found and explored. There is also not going to be a map, but rather just a "position display marker." The masochistic among you needn't be worried, either, as the developers are aiming to make the game just as challenging as Demon's Souls, which should make it just as rewarding as before when you learn from your (and others') past mistakes.

But that's not all - creating your character will not be bound to certain classes, and you will have more freedom when it comes to the style of play that you use (how this is going to pan out was not elaborated). Of course, there will be more spells and items than in Demon's Souls, as well as new animations for new weapons. Online play makes a return here, and includes both co-op and PvP. Messages can still be left behind as well as ghosts to be viewed as hints on what not to do at a given location. However, Soul Tendency has been dropped due to dedicated servers being quite the expense/hassle. From Software did mention they do have plans to get players to "engage in mutual role playing," but these plans are still under wraps.

Do you like where From Software is headed with this spiritual successor? Sound off in the comments below, and stay connected with PlayStation LifeStyle for more on this game as the news breaks.

When it comes to turn-based RPGs on the PS3, there are scant few choices for fans of the genre. Spiders Games hopes to remedy this with their downloadable release of Faery: Legends of Avalon. Does this game have what it takes, and is it worthy of your hard-earned money? Find out in our review.

The story here is pretty simple - you are a faery awakened from a deep stasis. The world of Avalon is in danger, as humans have stopped believing in faeries and other mythological creatures. Without this belief, magic is failing and thus the existence of many civilizations is in peril.

The game consists of exploring the world around you, talking to its various inhabitants, and combat. There are no random fights - you can always see the enemies beforehand, and combat ensues when you fly close enough to them. The combat system is hilariously simple. You have two options to advance combat: use a physical move or a magical ability. Characters can also eventually switch their stance between offensive and defensive, which can add bonuses to certain moves. It really is a very barebones system. There's nothing wrong with it, but at the same time there is nothing particularly special about it. You will quickly grow tired of this combat system as you go on fetch quest after fetch quest. Your character is seemingly revered by the other inhabitants, and then sent on menial tasks that they could really do themselves. It almost seems as if those missions are in there solely to increase the length of the campaign.

Customization is here in the form of what abilities you choose, which affects how your character looks. It is in-depth enough to give your character a unique look and is always welcome in RPGs. There is also a "Friends" option in the main menu, which allows you to see how your PSN friends have played through the game. This shows you how some of the choices you are given in the game affect the outcome of the story, which is a unique feature that is worth checking out.

The various locations you visit in the game are surprisingly well rendered. The characters are well rendered, and are reminiscent of Folklore when talking about how the inhabitants look - a bit creepy, more akin to a Tim Burton film than a Disney one. While the characters and buildings are decently detailed, the environment (more specifically, the ground) does seem a bit less polished, but not enough that it detracts from the visual appeal of the game's art style.

The music is easily the brightest spot in Faery, and would seem at home in any fairytale movie. Sweeping horns, legato strings and enchanting chimes all add greatly to the ambiance of the game's world. As with most RPGs, however, the music can get repetitive after a while, but at least with this game the music is done well enough that it does not really reach that point.

Speaking of audio, one thing is noticeably absent from the game - any semblance of voiceover work. The entire story is told via text, and no characters have any voices. Sure, there is the occasional grunt or scream during combat (and on rare occasion, while talking), but not even the main characters are voiced. Perhaps the game had a small budget, but in the current generation of gaming this is a rather disappointing omission.

So you've got a basic turn-based RPG with a finely-detailed fantasy setting. The music is pleasing, and the art style is impressive. But with a weak story, bland fetch quests comprising the majority of your campaign, and absolutely no voiceover work whatsoever, this game is hard to recommend to anyone but fans of this genre of games. There's nothing terrible about Faery: Legends of Avalon, it's just that there's nothing that makes the game stand out from all the countless RPGs before it.

According to Kotaku, the latest issue of Japanese magazine Famitsu features Jun Takeuchi, the head of Research and Development at Capcom. He states that the company is working on two brand new franchises that are not ready to be revealed yet. However, Takeuchi does add that one of the new IPs will have people thinking "At this point, what the hell are you doing? What, are you stupid?" It was also hinted that the games will be revealed by this summer, and presumably released in the coming holiday season barring any delays.

Dragon Age II is due to release in just over a month now. Some new information about the game has surfaced, and it reveals that the upcoming sequel has enough cutscene footage to create a feature film with.

A recent sighting on the BBFC ratings website has revealed that Dragon Age II has "linear segments" or cutscenes which run for a total time of 103 minutes. That is 13 minutes beyond what would normally be considered a full-length feature film of 90 minutes. It's clear that developer BioWare intends on players experiencing certain events in the game's plot in a pre-determined manner, however it is possible many of these cutscenes are simply altered versions of the same scene played out based on how the player has acted up until that point in the story.

Killzone 3 is less than a month away now. With a game so epic in scope, Guerrilla Games has their sights set on topping their efforts from Killzone 2, which does result in using up more disc space. So just how much room does their latest title take up? As it turns out, Killzone 3 may be the largest game of this generation.

According to Justpushstart, Killzone 3 weighs in at a hefty 41.5 GB. This is nearly 3 1/2 times the 12 GB of space that its predecessor took up, and puts Killzone 3 at the top of the largest games list for this generation of titles on the PlayStation 3. It should be noted that although the game is quite large, there is no installation required for the PlayStation 3's hard drive. Much like in Killzone 2, the entire game is streamed directly off the single dual-layer Blu-Ray disc. Killzone 3 is releasing on February 22, 23 and 25 in North America, Europe and the UK respectively.
