Lino cut on fineart paper A/P

2021-05-10T00:36:00.004+01:00

Title " The futility of knowing the spinning earth is hurtling through space in a galaxy that is spinning and also moving and we are made up of mainly water - this makes me scream a primal scream. "

Lino cuts are well associated with secondary school in my mind , something childish and not for adults.

I have had some lino the soft type for cutting and linoleum cutter set and inks stored away guess I was going to use it sometime or that was what I was thinking when I purchased.

So the first one I made was awful this is my second attempt , now must I list the interesting things about lino cuts , I guess they are a lot more tactile and slow the lino is physical and demands a certain type of line. One must plan a cut or design and really stick to it .

Ok so this image is pretty primitive I felt primitive making it believe me. There is an obvious influence and I have given it a kind of a long title, the mark making reminded me of rock art at the Neolithic site like Newgrange and Knowth on the Boyne valley. What do the Neolithic markings mean ?

Title " The futility of knowing the spinning earth is hurtling through space in a galaxy that is spinning and also moving and we are made up of mainly water - this makes me scream a primal scream. " So I was influenced by Edvard Munch, The Scream, and his quote "I felt a large scream pass through nature". This really resonates with me , and I tried to think of this or what could make me scream like this. I think there are many moments in life we just cannot cope and want to scream but an intellectual dead end when I try comprehend existence and the insignificance of humanity in the universe , just might make me scream like this.

Unfortunately the image is not as interesting as the concept behind it and its influences more of an exercise in nostalgia.

Photographic prints by Paul Woods

Ok, I had better say something about these images. Quickly they were taken a long time ago but what ever exposure these were taken at these prints are quite graphic and well unbelievably edited with a very high contrast. Think black and white can be low fi and contrasty - high contrast. There is a connection to painting in the composition and editing and bright midday light . CC

Creative Commons I may print these myself , Cyanotype Print Maybe available at some point in time.

Octopus 3d sculpt

2021-02-04T16:01:00.002+00:00

3dsculpt in 3dcoat for an experimental piece with music collaboration with a musician friend . Currently learning new 3d software - I have been at it for years really but with covid 19 and plenty free time I have modernised and will be using 3d coat Akeystu and Blender - All new to me but they are all powerful and professional tools and a pleasure to work with in 2021

The above is a work in progress and the texture is only for viewing the render I will retopo it and paint it up before I rig it and animate , more sea creatures to sculpt first.

Devil Mask Painting and design process

2020-05-20T13:23:00.000+01:00

Here is another painting done on a little 10x8 canvas covered cardboard panel. Acrylics are difficult to work with at the best of times compared to oils , which I do not use and have not for a long time , story to this to be told at a later date. This canvas panels are shiner than a stretched canvas less texture or grip for paint.

This image was first designed in a 3d application , modelled in polygons then subdivided , outputted to a raytracing program and rendered , I did not texture it as such kept he plastic shiny look , reminiscent of the early CG on the likes of Prodigy video Fire. I have been using computers for graphics that long ever since I was a kid and rendering a term officially taken from painting has come full circle. Truly I see the benefits of pre visualisation and lighting of my paintings in 3d software. This image looks mathematical and the light accurately depicts its volume. Something I personally could not do with out the use of computers or a life study.

Reminds me of the Japanese devil masks people ware in popular culture.

资本主义 Titled "Capitalism"

2020-04-25T01:33:00.001+01:00

Another lock down painting. This is titled capitalism, the photograph doesn't show the surface quality of the paint properly, paintings have an aesthetic that is unique to the medium. These are acrylics pretty fun and rewarding to paint with, oils I found rather slow and sleeping in the same room as I paint the fumes became unbearable I gave up painting in them years ago soon after I stopped working as a professional screenprinter. I am a collector and a procrastinator, having art supplies for years and not using them always an excuse not to use them; this lockdown has made me enter back into the conversation, that is art. I guess I have always been a part of it but with out contributing paintings I feel irrelevant.

So skulls and darkness were my last paintings 6 years ago, they had a horrific realism, these new paintings are almost pop art, but I have been trying to imbue meaning to covey and communicate something above the mere beauty of the subject and paint. The aesthetic more importantly comes from my direct use of photography and computer graphics but could also have roots in artworks by Yves Tanguy or Dali.

Starting on a toy painting, I did from one of my own photographs that was studio lit. I love the shapes and aesthetic, plus it was an easy one to start painting again, easing myself in slowly. Next was a corona virus I created in a 3d application, love the colours in this and light too, I tried to take that studio aesthetic from the photograph and continue it in 3d design but still keep it simple, baby steps.

This painting, titled capitalism, I designed in 3d software again following on from the progression or path I started on. This time I spent a little more time on the physical surface quality of the paint, it translated in real life but the photo here may not show it fully. Lockdown has been good for my creativity, painting is relaxing and rewarding and productive. I do see a small exhibition from this experiment and path of work, pop art is not my thing but I do admire its aesthetic and well concepts not sure if Bansky's Art is pop I am sure there is some classification I do know his aesthetic is governed by his process, designed and conceptualised, then quickly produced in the dead of night where people can see. Photography and 3d design visualisation has governed this series for me and baby steps I won't say I am communicating something over the aesthetic, certainly not in the first munny doll image, it was purely an object and image I liked. The progression from this point has definitely made me walk a path and stretch my skills which are rusty for sure, my concepts tentative like I am walking around in the dark. Let's hope I find a lightswitch.
