Pet Pantry Outreach is Launching!

Paws2Help Pet Pantry Outreach, founded in Casper, Wyoming, will reach its first milestone with the distribution of approximately 930 pounds of dog and cat food to citizens in need within the community on Saturday, March 2, 2013, commencing with Natrona County Meals on Wheels clients. The Pet Pantry Outreach will hold its official launch and reception at 1:00 p.m. hosted by Greiner Buick/GMA/Cadillac at 6302 East 2nd Street, Casper, WY 82609. The Keynote Speaker, City of Casper Mayor Kenyne Schlager, will be followed by guest speakers from Paws2Help Foundation, Paws2Help Pet Pantry Outreach, Wyoming Food Bank of the Rockies, Altitude Veterinary Hospital and Natrona County Meals on Wheels.

It was after the tremendous outpouring of donated pet food for displaced pets of the Sheepherder Hill Fire in October 2012 that Paws2Help Foundation Founder & President Lisa Craft identified a lack of an in-place organization providing the fundamentals helping feed pets in crisis in Wyoming. That is when Craft came up with idea of forming Paws2Help Pet Pantry Outreach, an organization that provides donated pet food to pet owners served by Meals on Wheels or those seeking assistance through the Wyoming Food Bank of the Rockies who are burdened by tough economic times, a health crisis or some other kind of emergency. Pet Pantry Outreach's mission is to help avoid the surrender of these animals to already overcrowded shelters, prevent them from being set loose to fend for themselves, or taken for euthanasia. Our purpose is to help pet owners keep their beloved pets, as pets are usually viewed as part of the family and often offer emotional support, which is essential to a person's well being. Our mission also addresses the very real problem of Meals on Wheels recipients saving and feeding a portion of their meals to their beloved pets, because of financial stress or the inability to shop for pet food. We believe that this program will provide a quality pet food diet for the animals and keep the human food where it should be—with the humans who are owned by their beloved pets.

Paws2Help Foundation welcomes you on behalf of Pet Pantry Outreach as we are especially proud of the ground breaking efforts that this special program is helping many families cope with enormously difficult times. Ensuring that our community's companion animals never go hungry is one of the most basic, and most critical, aspects of animal welfare. A person's inability to feed their pet could be due to unexpected bills or expenses, with the situation being temporary. By offering pet food assistance we hope to lessen the burden of homeless pets on local animal shelters and rescue groups. We hope families and individuals are rest assured they're able to keep their beloved pet during their hardship.

We expect to attribute increased donations and dispersals to increased awareness of our services by having several local food banks voluntarily post our advertising on their premises. Paws2Help Pet Pantry Outreach is sponsored by Paws2Help Foundation and a collaboration by the Wyoming Food Bank of the Rockies, Altitude Veterinary Hospital, and Natrona County Meals on Wheels.

The multi-organization collaboration supporting Pet Pantry Outreach's efforts is what is most exciting - the program has the support needed to sustain itself in the future as well as to expand throughout Wyoming. Towards the goal of expanding throughout Wyoming the Pet Pantry Outreach plans to expand its advertising efforts to increase services to the community.

Financial donations are essential for us to continue to carry out our mission. We are one of a relatively small number of pet food assistance programs throughout the US and have seen the effects of the importance of our mission on the local community. Black Friday Weekend Benefit Bake Sale

Our donation based bake sale fundraiser benefiting the homeless cats and dogs in Caspers' community raised over $500.00 on Saturday, November 24, 2012. This enables us to continue to fund medical care for the animals in need at Altitude Veterinary Clinic.

Braving the wind gusts and chilly weather our volunteers Jim Craft, Denise Wales Wendinger, Shelley Flowers, Melissa Fenster, Annell Grant, Emily Garner, Tiffany Hockaday and Cristen Larsen brought shoppers attention to the baked goods available during the day-long event. A special thank you to the Salvation Army Bell Ringer who did his part not only in donations, but in promoting our efforts for a good cause.

Casper Mountain: Sheepherders Hill Fire

We apologize for the delay in posting on the blog as we have been focusing our efforts in coordinating the skills and volunteers of all of the animal welfare groups in Casper on Facebook. An amazing outpouring of offers of financial donations, supplies of food, kennels, medical aid, trailers, property and fostering, and donations of hay and other pet products from local individuals and businesses.

Several properties and ranches, including a well-known museum called Crimson Dawn, on Casper Mountain were threatened by the fast moving front fire line, as early as 4:00 p.m. Sunday, September 9, 2012. By the evening Paws2Help Foundation understood that the fire was not going to be contained easily and sent out messages asking other animal welfare groups like The Pet Ring Foundation, Tempest Critter Rescue, and The Hector Foundation, for help. Many of their members were already responding to calls for help and the page helped us relay information throughout that first night - dozens of volunteers raced up the mountain in horse trailers working until 11:00 a.m. (a full 12 hours) until those animals most in danger were moved. Rescue efforts continued by phone, text, but especially through the social media site Facebook.

While the Red Cross helps humans, it does not help pets or other animals nor does it allow beloved family pets in evacuation shelters. This was felt deeply during Hurricane Katrina during city-wide evacuations occurred and pet owners had to decide on leaving their pets or staying risking all. This has not occurred in Casper, nor will it thanks to the compassionate residents offering their homes and property up to displaced family pets from hermit crabs, fish, snakes, hamsters, bunnies, and of course, dogs and cats, and livestock, including llamas, alpacas, horses, mini-horses, goats, and cattle.

The first step to responding to the emergency situation was to obtain horse trailers to help transport large critters down the mountain. Over the last 3 days our 3 phone numbers (our main business line, Lisa's house and cell phone) received well over 1000 calls from neighbor after neighbor offering time, money and supplies. We used our cell phones plugged into every outlet to return calls as quickly as possible while scrolling through the Facebook Page that had been set up Sunday night to coordinate efforts receiving thousands of comments offering the same.

On Monday, September 10, 2012, our own Lisa Craft was interviewed begging residents not to leave their pets behind, help was available for Displaced Animals Seek Shelter Following Casper Mountain Fire. Heavy smoke and ash were causing alarm in Rolling Hills and Glenrock, the nearest towns approximately 19 miles away. The fear was extremely dry brush would alight at Hat Six Road and progress all the way to those towns with the whipping winds accelerating the hotspots faster than could be put out.

On Tuesday, September 11, 2012, the Red Cross opened it's evacuation center at the Army National Guard Amory on C Y Avenue, past Paradise Valley suburb, just before Coates Road. An informational meeting for helping humans will occur tomorrow at Noon to coordinate volunteers. Amongst those volunteers will be our own attending to help ensure evacuees know there is a place to go with their animals instead of being turned away because they have their dogs and cats with them.

DISPLACED SHEEPHERDERS HILL FIRE RESIDENTS WITH PETS AND LIVESTOCK

Please do not leave your pets behind! Your Casper area neighbors have offered to temporarily foster your pets and livestock. We are also prepared to provide help loading/unloading, transport, and volunteers to help feed, water, groom and exercise large animals.

If you are in need of a foster homes or donations of pet food/supplies due to being displaced please contact us so that we can provide your pets with supplies in this emergency situation. All of the area animal welfare organizations are working together to help your animals as other agencies help you.

We will require you to sign a release of liability/hold harmless agreement, provide your veterinary clinic, and where you are staying as well as your emergency contact. If you have collars, tags and papers on your animals please advise us so that we can make copies. We may provide your animals with a health check to ensure their welfare as well as that of the other animals they may come in contact with during this time. We will maintain a list of your information, your animals information, and with whom they have been placed and will provide you with that information when a match is made.

Metro Kitty Calli Needs a Home!--ADOPTED!!!

This is Calli, she is a beautiful long haired calico who came to Metro as a stray on September 3, 2011. We found that she had already been spayed but we gave her her necessary vaccinations and a good grooming! She is about 3 years old. Her FIV/FELV test came back as a weak false positive. This means that she MAY carry a weak strain of the disease that could be passed to kittens-but since she is spayed, no worries! She is very healthy now and will be for many years to come. Chelsea is a P2H sponsored Metro dog. She is a year and a half to two years old. She is absolutely beautiful, and smart and sweet--she loves to go for walks and to be petted. She thinks she's a lap dog. She has been spayed, fully vaccinated and canine disease tested NEGATIVE. She knows basic commands of sit, stay, and shake. She is house trained and crate trained. She does not run off when unleashed. The ONLY problem with Chelsea is that whomever had her, was apparently not very nice to her and has made her VERY food aggressive around other pets. I believe that eventually she would get over this, but it isn't safe to have her with another pet at this point. And it may not be a good idea for her to be around small children that might try to take a treat from her.
I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH THOUGH, WHAT A WONDERFUL DOG SHE IS!!! For an adult, as an only pet, she would be absolutely perfect! I would keep her myself, except I have other pets.
PLEASE cross-post this to everyone. Transport is available. She is the SWEETEST of sweet dogs and it breaks my heart to have to send her back to Metro. There HAS to be someone out there who would be a perfect fit for this lovely girl.

Hi All, I was contacted tonight by a lady who lost her black kitty around Coffman street here in Casper about two weeks ago. This is what she writes:

Emma is spayed. Weighs about 6.5 pounds. She is short haired all black with small white patch on her chest and her middle toes of back feet are white. She is very affectionate and cuddly. She is up to date on shots.

I don't want to post her number all over the internet, but if you have any info about this kitty, please contact me right away and I'll put you in contact with her family. She is VERY missed! Please help! Thank you!

Senior Dogs Needs a Home!

Her history is sad, my son adopted her (in 2002) and she went to work with him, rode in the back of his truck etc... Then he went to work in the methane field he put her in a pen for a few years then came home from Methane and had a new dog which now goes with him in the truck and lives in the house. I feel very bad as he was not raised to treat animals this way. My husband and I tried to keep her but she is territorial with my back yard and does not like my husbands boxer. My husband says I must find her a home. The shelter here cannot take her, she is on the list for the Sheridan Shelter, Gillette said they would euthanize her. I must find something for her this week. thanks for your help. Dana

Chelsea was just ADOPTED!!!! She is going home with a very nice couple and a new friend! "Colter" is an 8 yr old Eng. Springer Spaniel who lost his last companion in July 2010 and him and his family were finally ready to fill the void!!! YIPPEEE for Chelsea!
