With rising gas prices, lead contaminated toys, and tainted foods, who hasn’t become more conscience about ways to conserve, where our products come from and what we’re actually feeding our families. And, of course, that includes our fur-babies.

Not sure what to do?? Not sure what steps to take to become greener? Think it’s too hard? It’s not too hard, it only takes a little reading on your part, and small changes make a huge difference.

I started my journey to become a little bit greener with Chartruse Life. Chartruse Life, A mom & daughter's journey to a greener life, which offers a variety of simple and cost-effective ideas to living greener. This blog, www.chartreuselife.blogspot.com, will definitely get you pointed in the right direction.

So, what are we as pet parents to do? Here at Pawsatively Dapper, we’ve decided to try and help you and your pet become a little greener. And together, we can all make a difference.

Over the next several blog posts, we’ll be offering a series of suggestions to help green our pets, green ourselves, and green our environment in the process.

Our first suggestion, although this not specific to your pet, it will help many animals out there who are yet to be someone’s pet :

Don’t shop; Adopt. .Millions of pets are put down annually and puppy mills continue to thrive. If you’re ready to add a new member to your family, please, please, please check out your local shelters and rescue groups. Want a specific breed??? There are many breed specific rescue groups out there and a quick internet search can get you started.

Helping The Shelters

This is a local organization that will collect your "metal" garbage. They'll take anything from your old ironing board to your out of date washing machine.

All you have to do is place your old items outside, get in touch with Metal for Mutts, and they'll do the rest. They'll come by and take all your old junk away and in the process you'll be helping the homeless pets at the Central Brevard Humane Society.

And, with more than 10,000 animals euthanized a year in our county alone, my hats are off to these people for such an ingenious idea.

Wow.......what if everyone did something like this in their community. Couldn't you just imagine the results???

It doesn't have to be metal, it can be anything at all -- can you think of a way to help the environment and your local abandoned pets???

Are you sure the dog food you're feeding is of good or even great quality?

We all want to feed the absoulte best to our babies to ensure a long, healthy life. I was quite surprised to realize that what I thought was a great quality food only rated 2 out of 6 stars on www.dogfoodanalysis.com, an independent pet food review site.

There's a lot of information contained in this site, including an analysis of your brand of food, reasons why the food was rated the way it was, as well as food discussion groups.

Is Your Beloved Pet Missing?

A family had lost their beloved pet. They did the usual, posted fliers, banged on doors, and walked the streets in the night to find their dog. All with no success. After a week they had almost given up, and then discovered

Within 24 hours Fischer was back home safe and sound.

This site will call between 500 to 5,000 of your neighbors advising that your pet has gone missing. Your neighbors will hear a description of your pet, a number to call with information, and instructions on where to see a photo.

We're happy to hear Fischer was reunited with his family. We hope you never need such a service, but if you do this is certainly a unqiue way to get the word out fast.

The first, is a horrific story about a dog named Ella. Ella's owner left her in her crated in an empty house for two months without food or water. Happy Earth Day!!!

What a great day to reflect on how we and our pets impact this amazing place we call home.

There are so many ways we can "green up" and here are just a few that crossed my mind today.

FLEAS
Flea season is fast approaching for many of you, although it's almost always flea season here in Florida. I never quite understood why people would put toxic flea collars on their pets. And, I must admit I'm not a big fan of the liquid behind the shoulder blades either. Some of that stuff literally made my cat go bald in spots.....hmmm, doesn't seem like such a great solution to a pesky problem.

It certainly can't be good for our furbabies baby wearing a lovely (not) collar full of chemicals, nor can it be good for us two legged creatures to be plastering our hands all over those things while we're spending quality time with our pets.

I for one (knocking on wood) haven't really had much of an issue with fleas. But do have a few suggestions and a lot of empathy for those of you who may be battling the persistent little creatures.

First, a good ol bath -- believe it or not -- washing Fido or Fifi in a nice relaxing bath with some original Dawn dish liquid will kill those pesky little creatures on contact. My sister rescued farrel cats and kittens from an apartment complex up north and swears by this. I've seen it in action, and must admit, although I wouldn't make it a daily regimine, it will offer some quick temporary relief by sending those hitch-hikers promptly to a watery grave.

But getting them off our pets just isn't enough. Now this I've never tried, but heard it works wonders and comes highly recommended by some very learned associates. What is it you ask? It's called Diatomaceous Earth, a/k/a DE, a nontoxic powder made from fossilized alage. Sprinkle this stuff on your carpets and lawns and it'll slice, dice, and dry up those lingering little boogers in no time without the use of toxic chemicals in and outside our homes. DE can be found in most garden supply stores.

CLEANING PRODUCTS
It amazes me how we all get carried away with strong smelling, often toxic chemical cleaning products.

I for one have been a steam cleaner for a long time. Besides saving all that moolah not having to purchase those high priced "bad for you" cleaning products, it's relieving to know that it's safe for my little Brandy Pants and my she devil cat, Angel.

Afraid that isn't enough. There are wonderful natural cleaning products. Baking soda, borax, and plain old vinegar do a mighty fine job and are just as effective as the expensive toxic products you pick up at your local grocery store. I've used vinegar to clean my floors, countertops, and more. Baking soda works wonder as a carpet freshener, sink scrubbing abrasive, and laundry whitener/brightener. Besides having these surfaces and so many more looking all shiney, bright and new Brandy certainly appreciates not having to be crated while our floor and just-cleaned rooms are drying.

Not Just for Cleaning
While doing some online vinegar investigating I came across a site called Earth Clinic. This site offers tips and tricks for all types of ailments for both you and your pet(s). Makes for some interesting reading if nothing else, and who knows maybe some of this stuff will work on you or your pet. There's so much all of us could do to "green up" ourselves as well as our pets. After all it's not only good for the environment, but who knows could better for us all.

With Valentines Day on the horizon, I couldn't help but stop and think what it is that draws me to critters so pasionately -- not only mine but everyone elses too.

Well, after a moment (a very quick moment) of pondering, I realized it's because they luv you pretty much -- no matter what and ask so little in return -- feed 'em, give 'em a little luvin, and they'll be there for you loving and forever.

My "Brandy Pants" is my best friend for many reasons....she always listens, she never judges and still luvs me for who I am, and I just know without a moment of doubt that she'll be there for me listening, non-judmental, and loving -- always ready to put a smile on my face.

I'd love to see and hear about the one(s) that put smiles on your faces.

Boy, have I been neglecting my blog, and for that I apologize.

I am going to start this out by posting my "specials" and whatever else comes to mind. So, here it goes....
