By learning and hearing new words regularly, they gain skills in language from several curricular areas. This article gives some ideas on how to build a child’s vocabulary in visual arts.

Importance of Having Art Vocabulary for Children
Building a child's knowledge of artistic words is an important part of their overall language development. The NAEYC or National Association for the Education of Young Children includes in their accreditation criteria the inclusion in the daycare curriculum of some topics on development of art vocabulary for children to enhance their cognitive development. It is further stated in the Standard 2.J.04 that children must be provided with various opportunities to help them learn vocabulary and new concepts related to music, dance, drama, and arts. This is under the Early Childhood Program Standards and Accreditation Criteria of NAEYC in 2006.

By helping children to build new art words, it will enhance their skills and capabilities in verbalizing their emotions, thought, and concepts that are related in what they usually see (including the aesthetic development) and create. You can introduce art vocabulary to children in their art classes or activities on art viewing. The art making activities are consist of either formal or informal art lessons.

When and How to Introduce the Art Vocabulary
As early as possible, art should be introduced to children. Activities on art viewing improves their vocabulary. You may have activities like looking posters or paintings of famous painters, looking some illustrations of pictures of a book, or simply viewing an art work made by a child during his art show. These educational activities give fun and enjoyment to the children and they also gain additional benefit because this aids in aesthetic development.

To easily introduce some art vocabulary to children, you have to learn words first. You can refer to resource guides on art making for teachers or you can also use the internet. The ArtLex website gives excellent and enormous definitions on different art words. After learning several art words, the next thing to do is to use these terms during your art class. Like for example, you can use the term “collage” when the kids are cutting some papers and gluing them. Do not simply call it a cutting-and-gluing activity, use “collage” instead. Explain to them the new term and let them apply it to their art activity. After introducing the new word, let the children pronounce it several times for correct pronunciation. Continue using the new art term and the children will surely remember it.

Art Vocabulary Terms
These are some art terms that the young children can basically use:  colour, collage, primary and secondary colours, paint, sculpture, photography, mixed media, portrait and self portrait, and print making.

Children can begin to develop vocabulary on visual art easily. You may start learning new words by yourself and use these during your classroom art activities.  These will become part of their vocabulary once they hear these terms regularly.

Take a look on your classroom or home: do you notice any favourite toy of the student(s)? Does the toy have the letter which you are focusing on during the week? If it doesn’t, pick an object which meets this need. Using this object as your focal point, create an activity centre or a display. Create cards for each individual letter in spelling out the object/ word then add numbers on the corner of every card which show the letters’ ordinal pattern. This can also reinforce the numeric work you are focusing on during that time. In this activity centre, you can also put up a toy or small picture representing the starting sound of every letter of the bigger display object.

If exposing the children to additional sounds or letters becomes very overwhelming for them, just focus on one letter only for the entire week. If you aim to just focus on one letter alone for the whole week, add different picture cards which have the letter placed in a variety of positions. For example, if you are focusing on the letter G, a toy gun can be your focus object; picture cards showing a goat, grass, glass, bag, log, bug, etc. can be used. Make sure that every picture card contains the word’s spelling. You can also add other items to the display/ center.

You can incorporate the following suggestions in creating your display or you can also choose to make them sound/ alphabet activities which can stand alone.

a)   Textured Letters- You can trace letters (using different fonts can also be fun) using glue (adding salt or sand if you want) then let it dry. This activity can be a great tactile experience for young students.

b)   Name Scramblers- Make a card for each different letter in the alphabet. Then, making use of the child’s name, mix the letters and then challenge the child to rearrange the letters so they can recreate another name. You can also do this activity with advanced students by asking the whole class to think of all the words they can think as they rearrange the word “scrambled”.

c)   Memory game- If you are focusing one letter during the week, make cards with each letter having a different font style (use lower and/ or upper case). Create two copies (you can laminate them for purposes of durability), cut them out, scramble the cards, then lay them down individually facing down. The mechanics of the game is that of the traditional lotto’s.

d)   Play Dough- Make laminated large letters. Then, let the children trace the letter lines using dough snakes to come up with the letter you are focusing on. You can also make use of cookie dough in this activity. When you’re done with the activity, you can bake it afterwards for your children to eat on snack time.

e)   Labels- You can put up labels representing the objects all over the room. Let the children roam around the classroom then ask them to count all the focus letters which they can find. Change labels every day so the children can have a new, as well as fun routine which is educational for the children.

The activities above are only some fun activities which you can do let the children do. As care providers, educators and parents, we have to lay down that stepping stone which can make your children’s reading experience successful. Using your imagination, you can make this adventure a successful one.

If, after the visit, you are considering sending your child to this center or home, ask for several references, preferably parents whose children are already enrolled in that particular center of your choice. You might also want to contact these parents and ask them about their experiences with the center/home directly.

Moms should start preparing the child in advance that it’s going to be a great adventure in day care and that they will have lot of new friends and fun games.  These should however be kept low key and not overdone as it could overwhelm the child.

Day care providers can, on the other hand, provide moms with a list of first names of the children in day care as well as the carers and suggest having role playing with dolls so that everything will be more familiar with the child on her first day.

Moms should also start fostering independence in the child weeks before by visiting friends, washing their own hands. At the same time, providers should encourage mom and her child to visit the center a few times before finally starting to allow the child to absorb the environment.

Snacks, change of clothes, comfort toys should be packed by moms for the day and make sure that everything is labelled. When the mom leaves, providers should distract the child or usher him off to some exciting activity.

On the first day, the mom can settle in by staying in the room with the child and letting him do his own thing and simply remaining in sight. Test your child’s reactions by stepping out of the room for a while saying that you need to make a call or just in the hall. Let the staff distract your child for a while and watch his reaction from a distance. When you need to go to the car or get some coffee, give your child a quick and say mommy will see you later. If the child cries out, don’t look back as your child will soon stop crying and will be distracted with play and activities.

•   Rinse well under running water to ensure that all dirt are washed away.

Adequate Supplies and Cleaning Products

•   Always ensure that there are available supplies of tissues, paper towels, soap, and alcohol hand cleaners in restrooms and sinks and in locations where children usually stay like reading room.

•   In diaper changing area, ensure that there are supplies of disposable gloves as well as alcohol hand cleaner, or paper towels. Make sure that used tissues, gloves, and diapers should be properly dispensed so no one can get it especially children.

•   In household cleaning, use only Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) - registered disinfectants like chlorine bleach or hypochlorite solution. Always follow instructions indicated in labels of those products.

Covering Mouth When Sneezing and Coughing

•   Child care providers should teach children to use tissue to cover their mouth and nose when sneezing and coughing. In this way, germs and viruses would be prevented from spreading.

•   If in case children sneezed or coughed on their hands, wash their hands immediately with soap and water, or with alcohol-based hand cleaner if soap and water are not available.

PSP make users’ spare time amused. PSP users all know that their player provide they a chance to enjoy videos on it. Some people know how to put videos on it, some not. In the following text, I will share my experience to PSP fans to enjoy videos on PSP.
Before I share my article, I should tell you something about PSP video parameters.
Sony PSP can't play MPEG-4 video encoded with bit rate higher than 768kbps that is why high quality MPEG-4 files need to be converted to a lower bit rate. The PSP will not recognize MPEG-4 video file unless it has a name in the format of M4V10001.MP4. The file needs to start with M4V followed by five numbers, and then it must end in .MP4.

For an MPEG-4 file that have been specially formatted for the Sony PSP, there will usually be the .THM file alongside it. If your movie file has a name of M4V10001.MP4, then there should be the file with the name M4V10001.THM alongside it. The THM file is a simple 160x120 thumbnail saved in JPEG format at 72dpi that is associated with the video file. As long as the name of the THM file is the same as the MP4 file, this picture will be displayed alongside the video file in the Video interface of your Sony PSP .

Version 2.0 of the Sony PSP firmware added support for another video file format: MPEG-4 AVC. These files follow a similar naming convention to the regular .MP4 files, as they are named MAQxxxxx.MP4, where xxxxx is five numbers. AVC video files offer better image quality then regular MPEG-4 files.
Now, I begin to explain my article step by step. I divide this article into two parts:
1.   How to put dvd on PSP
2.   How to put video on PSP

To complete this process, I need a tool called 4Videosoft DVD to PSP Suite



Part 1: How to put dvd on PSP

Step 0: Download and install 4Videosoft DVD to PSP Converter


Step 1: Import DVD.
Place the DVD into your DVD drive and click the “Load DVD” button to load DVD.

Step 2: Video settings.
Select the output video format you want from the “Profile” drop-down list.

Step 3:  Place video
Click “Open Folder” button to open your output destination file.

Step 4: Start conversion
Click the “Start” button to start your conversion and in a short while it will be finished.

Part 2: How to put video on PSP

Step 0: Download and install 4Videosoft PSP Video Converter
When you finished the download process, run the .exe file to install it.



Step 1: Click “Add files” button to import videos.

Step 2: Extend the "Profile" category to select an output format.

Step 3: Click “Open Folder” button to open your output destination file.

Step 4: Click the “Start” to convert.

Tips----- Basic functions for all the 4videosof:

1. How to change your video effect
If you want to adjust the effect of your movie, please click the “Effect” button and a pop-up effect window will appear. It allows you to edit your movie’s effect including “Brightness, Contrast, Saturation and Volume”.

2: How to crop off the black edges and adjust the size of video play region
By using the "Crop" function you can crop off the black edge of your video and you can also drag the line around the video image to adjust the video play region to fit for your mobile devices

3: How to split your video
The "Trim" function also servers as a video splitter for you to get any time-length video episode. You can set the "Start Time" and "End Time" to set the exact time-length of the clip or you can directly drag the slide bar to the position you want.

4: How to join the videos
If you would like to put several files into one output file, please tick the check box of the “Merge into one file”.

5: How to save your favorite picture
If you like the current image when preview video, you can use the "Snapshot" option. Just click the "Snapshot" button, the image will be saved and you can click the "Open" button next to "Snapshot" button to open your picture.

By the way, I also find useful tools for sony fans to enjoy videos on their players.
