Hubble Images Jupiter Impact Event

It used its new cameras for the job

A certain point 580 million kilometers away is these days the rage in astronomical observations. A few days ago, an object impacted the planet Jupiter, as we reported. The event was first discovered by an Australian sky watcher, who telephoned NASA and told them about his observations. The impact, which left the planet scarred, occurs 15 years after the 1994 impact, when debris from the Shoemaker Levy 9 comet struck the gas giant and battered it considerably. Now, all telescopes are focused on Jupiter, including the mighty Hubble, which took a series of pictures revealing the extent of the damage.

One of the most revealing photos was taken two days ago by a team of scientists operating Hubble, led by Heidi Hammel, of the Space Science Institute, in Boulder, Colorado. The director of the Space Telescope Science Institute, in Baltimore, Maryland, Matt Mountain, allotted discretionary observation time to the team, so as to get the best possible picture of the “unfolding drama” on our neighbor. The newly installed Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) was used for the observations, which were made in visible light wavelengths.

This is a false color image of the impact site in Jupiter's southern hemisphere Enlarge picture “This is just one example of what Hubble's new, state-of-the-art camera can do, thanks to the hard work of the astronauts and the entire Hubble team. Fortunately, the best is yet to come!” says the associate administrator of NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Ed Weiler. “Hubble's truly exquisite imaging capability has revealed an astonishing wealth of detail in the 2009 impact site. By combining these images with our ground-based data at other wavelengths, our Hubble data will allow a comprehensive understanding of exactly what is happening to the impact debris. My sincerest congratulations and thanks to the team who created Wide Field Camera 3 and to the astronauts who installed it!” Hammel adds.

From the data collected thus far, astronomy teams investigating the incident were able to conclude that the diameter of the rogue object that impacted the gas giant was at least twice the size of several football fields combined. While this is not very accurate, experts underline that more time is needed before a fixed size is established. Additionally, it was also discovered that the explosion that followed that object's descent and disintegration was at least several thousand times more powerful than the 1908 Tunguska River Valley blast, which destroyed about 80 million trees over a 2,150 square kilometer (830 square miles) area.

Samsung to Launch Tegra-Based Smartphone

In Q4, with AT&T or T-Mobile

South Korean mobile phone maker Samsung will come to the market with a smartphone that packs an Nvidia Tegra chip, a company representative has confirmed recently, as reported by laptopmag. While the Tegra computer-on-a-chip has already been known to come in a series of smartphones in the near future, this time it seems that things are moving closer to becoming reality.

The platform should offer a lot of performance in terms of graphics on a mobile phone, yet other capabilities are also enhanced with the use of the chip, it seems. While one of the first devices to come to the market with Tegra inside will be Microsoft’s Zune HD, it seems that a handset to include it won't make us wait too long either.

As many of you might already know, the first Tegra-based mobile phone has already been reported to be on its way to the market in the fourth quarter of the ongoing year, while the possible carrier to have it is either AT&T or T-Mobile. Until now, there were no exact details on which maker would step up first with such a device, yet it seems that Samsung might be the winner.

Some of the details that are available concerning a Tegra-based device, regardless of the maker, include a possible $199 price point, as well as the great support the platform can offer to Windows CE and Android. In case these prove true, we should have on the market a Samsung handset based on Nvidia's Tegra chip that will run either under Microsoft or Google's operating system, while being priced the same as Apple's iPhone.

In case Samsung unveils such a device, users might very well receive an AMOLED touchscreen and a wide range of TouchWiz widgets along with it, which should enhance the user experience quite a lot. The chip can deliver a lot of performance, so everything is for the best, it seems. Hopefully, the phone will arrive this year, so stay tuned to learn more details on it.

Scientists Develop Tool to Determine the 'Happiness' of Bloggers

By analyzing millions of blogs

Human feelings aren't exactly the easiest things to quantify, measure or study. Throughout the years countless methods have been tried, some with more success than others. Moreover, being able to measure the “happiness” levels of thousands, not to mention millions, of people at any given point in time with a reasonable degree of certainty has been mostly a dream. Until now, as Peter Dodds and Chris Danforth, working in the Advanced Computing Center at the University of Vermont, have created a tool that “knows” how millions of people feel on any given day.

"The proliferation of personal online writing such as blogs gives us the opportunity to measure emotional levels in real time," the two scientists write in their study, "Measuring the Happiness of Large-Scale Written Expression: Songs, Blogs, and Presidents," published in the Journal of Happiness Studies.

The two, one a mathematician the other a computer scientist, started with a site, wefeelfine.org, which scours the Internet looking for certain phrases. The software searches through some 2.3 million web sites looking for sentences beginning with “I feel” or “I am feeling.” After gathering almost 10 million sentences they applied the findings of a previous study, Affective Norms for English Words (ANEW), which gave common English words a "psychological valence," to determine the happiness score of every sentence. The ANEW study asked participants to assign words on an unhappy to happy scale.

While their methods would seem a little too rigid and mathematical to determine something as subtle as human feelings, because of the scale of the study and the size of the texts they analyzed they believe the findings give an accurate measurement of the general state of happiness of a large group of people.

The study found that two recent events had made a large impression on the general public: the 2008 US election day was one of the happiest days for Americans, with a huge spike in words like “proud,” while the day of Michael Jackson's death and the following two were among the unhappiest in the period that the study extended on.

Mac OS X 10.6 Build 10A421 Gets the Green Light

Comes with system fixes for stability, compatibility, and security

Cupertino, California-based Apple has just released a new build of Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) for the developer community that is working on testing the operating system, namely Mac OS X 10.6 Build 10A421. The company seeded to developers the new Build 10A421 for the platform only ten days after releasing the previous flavor, Build 10A411, marking the third iteration to become available in only two weeks.

Reportedly, the new Mac OS X 10.6 Build 10A421 comes as a 741MB download, and developers can get it from Apple through the Software Update utility. Here is how the new flavor of the operating system is described by the company: “This Snow Leopard Developer Preview Update is recommended for all users running the Snow Leopard Developer Preview Build 10A411 or later. This update includes general operating system fixes for stability, compatibility, and security.”

The new build of Snow Leopard comes to developers in about the same size as the previously released build (748.1 MB for Mac OS X 10.6 Build 10A411). As one can easily see from the description Apple has made to the update, there are very few details regarding the changes that the new Build 10A421 comes towards developers with, though we're sure that registered users will analyze it and learn what has been modified.

In the meantime, we should mention that the OS X Snow Leopard is expected to become available on the market in September, roughly a month from now. According to Apple, currently existing OS X Leopard owners will have the opportunity to purchase it for only $29. In addition, those who acquired a new Mac starting June 8, 2009 or later will be eligible to receive the update for a price of $9.95 through Apple's “Up to Date” program. The rumors started when Cheryl Smith, a business consultant, posted on her blog about a curious “hot singles” ad, which her husband received while on Facebook, showing her picture. Now Facebook has stepped up to address the rumors and accusations stating that there was no change in the policies and that the advertiser had actually violated the social network's policy and had since then been removed along with the offending ad.

“We are as concerned as many of you are about any potential threat to your experience on Facebook and the protection of your privacy. That's why we prohibit ads on Facebook Platform that cause a bad user experience, are misleading, or otherwise violate our policies,” Barry Schnitt, Facebook policy manager, wrote on the company's blog. “Along with removing ads, we've recently prohibited two entire advertising networks from providing services to applications on Facebook Platform because they were not compliant with our policies and failed to correct their practices.”

In fact, policies that allow advertisers to add a user's photo in their ads, but only if the user made actions to indicate a connection with the brand or organization that is advertising, have been around for quite a while now and have been used in some targeted ads campaigns with varying degrees of success. However, the incident that started the whole controversy was a violation of those policies as the third-party ad network that delivered the ad used photos that had no connection with the service being advertised.

Still, Facebook's new push towards more openness, while understandable from its perspective, is bound to create more incidents like this and the social network has to thread very carefully especially after years of being one of the most closed services online.

Bing Users Are 55 Percent More Likely to Click on Ads

Data from an advertising company indicates

Microsoft's new search engine Bing has been a relative success for the company, if not in user numbers, which may have risen slightly in the past month, though sources are often contradictory, then by the large amount of mostly positive press it has been getting almost two months since it was launched. And now there seems to be another reason why Microsoft execs should be patting themselves on the back as data from search-advertising network Chitika shows that Bing users are 55 percent more likely to click on an ad in a site they are visiting, compared to Google users.

“We at Chitika are quite fond of search engines: since all of our ads serve only to search traffic, they’re our bread and butter in the online world. So with Microsoft’s new Bing decision engine making so much noise, we thought we’d take a closer look at the clickthrough rates of visitors from the three major search players: Yahoo!, Google, and Bing,” Dan Ruby, director of marketing at Chitika, said about the reasoning behind the study.

The study looked at ads on 50,000 sites in Chitika's network, which generated 32 million impressions in a week this month. The findings show that users who landed on the sites coming from a Bing search were more likely to click on an ad, with clickthrough rates of 1.5 percent. Meanwhile, only 1.24 percent of those coming from Yahoo's search engine clicked on ads on the sites, with Google users coming dead last following on ads only in 0.97 percent of the cases.

While the data is interesting in itself, does it really say anything about the ad market or Bing for that matter? One could assume that the fact that Bing users are more likely to click on ads is a characteristic of the whole group and not just an unrelated coincidence. One could even speculate, like TechCrunch does, that they are using Bing in the first place because they are more susceptible to ads, as Microsoft has been pouring tens of millions in an ad campaign for the search engine. Still it may not have anything to do with the product itself but rather with the fact that it has such a small audience.

<media:rating>nonadult</media:rating>
Computer Tutorial
