Netgear Modem Support For Optus Customers

Trouble setting up your new Netgear modem.One of my friend in Australia got a Netgear modem from Optus (Internet service provider).He called me up to get some information on the setup. Then I thought why not write a post on the same.

Steps you need to follow

First of all connect your Netgear modem to the computer with the Ethernet cable ( mostly yellow in color).
If you are using a computer with windows operating system then click on start button --->All Programs -->Accessories ---> Command Prompt
Type in ipconfig and find the default gateway address
Open the Internet explorer or any browser and in the address bar type in the default gateway address. (It can be 10.1.1.1 or 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1)
Now if you let a dialog box asking for username and password
Type username: admin ; password: password
Click on Basic Settings on the left hand side

Encapsulation : PPPoE ( PPP over Ethernet)
Login : (Your complete Optus Username example: john@optusnet.com.au) and type in the password that you got from Optus
NAT - Enable
Click on Apply

8. Now go to ADSL Settings

Multiplexing method : LLC - Based
VPI : 8
VCI : 35
DSL Mode - Auto

9. Click on Apply and it will update the settings

10. Connect to the Internet and enjoy !

Ping rate is the total time to get to the server and back to your system. Ping rate above 100ms is high .This is mainly faced by the BSNL users because the distance to the server is more but if the server is located close to you place and still you suffer high ping rates then you need to upgrade your internet package. If your ping rates are low then you can easily plays games like Counter Strike without getting kicked. Check you ping rate at www.speedtest.net.Mine is a slower connection and ping rates are usually 60ms.

How do we do this? (Depends on ISP)

    1. Start >> Run >> Regedit
     2. HKEY_LOCAL MACHINE > SYSTEM >CurrentControlSet
     3. Services > Tcpip > Parameters > Interfaces

Now choose your Internal IP located on it. Find your by typing ipconfig in cmd

     4. Create two DWORD (32-bit) values.
     5. Right click >> New >> DWORD value.
   6. Name the first one as TcpAckFrequency and Second TCPNoDelay (case sensitive)
   7. Right click > Modify the TcpAckFrequency value and change the 'Value:' to '1'
     8. Repeat the above step for TCPNoDelay
