As ransomware threats continue to rise, PC Matic founder and CEO, Rob Cheng, shared his thoughts on the increased likelihood of healthcare facilities falling victim.

Increased Technology, Increased Vulnerability

Healthcare facilities have become increasingly technical. From the way patient files are stored to the ways medical procedures are done, technology plays a significant role. Unfortunately, this means increased maintenance required. Without the proper upkeep and security in place, healthcare facilities are at a greater risk of falling victim to cyber crime. The reality is, if that happens, network outages can last for months at a time costing organizations millions in lost revenues and recovery efforts.

“Absolute best protection…” – Rob Cheng

In a recent article, Could allowlisting reduce the impact of ransomware, cyberattacks on healthcare? in SC Magazine, Rob Cheng states allowlisting, also known as application whitelisting,

“…is the absolute best protection against ransomware and other malware such as keyloggers, zero-days, and advanced persistent threats,” said Cheng. “For example, if the ransomware is embedded in an email, and an employee clicks on the attachment, before the ransomware runs, the allowlist blocks the ransomware before any damage is done.”

NIST Approved

Understandably, this default-deny approach can have drawbacks. However, the concern of false positives, high maintenance requirements, and friction with other cybersecurity solutions has been resolved. Allowlisting, as recommended by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) can reduce the risk of a cyber attack. So much so, that if executed properly, Cheng believes the risk factor is reduced by a factor of ten.

Rob Cheng, founder and CEO of PC Matic, joined CNBC’s Squawk Box this morning to discuss cybersecurity best practices. Rob stated much of today’s cyber threats are avoidable if the right technology is in place. As a matter of fact, he reported it could be reduced by a factor of ten, if organizations simply added application whitelisting to their security stack. But why are American’s facing this threat to begin with?

Ransomware is a Business Model

Let’s not forget that ransomware is a business model. A rather profitable one at that. If your business is successful, are you just going to stop? No. Because ransomware is able to infect networks across the globe, and they make a pretty penny doing it, the threat will continue. Not only will ransomware continue to threaten America’s digital infrastructure, but the attacks will continue to advance in sophistication. This is why application whitelisting matters, and should be deployed in conjunction with the existing cybersecurity stack of the business.

Cryptocurrency Regulation Vs. Prevention

But what about cryptocurrency? Does that play a role? Cryptocurrency is a form of digital currency that is untraceable. Cyber criminals require this, typically Bitcoin, as their form of payment to provide a decryption key. A decryption key is the unlock code to restore the network after ransomware has been installed. The theory is, if forms of cryptocurrency are eliminated, ransomware would be eliminated as well. As Rob states, the problem with this is, another cryptocurrency will simply be created.

Alternatively, placing a higher emphasis on preventing the attack to begin with, is where organizations need to focus. Prevention is the key, and application whitelisting is the gold standard.

Myrtle Beach, SC – Today, PC Matic, American cybersecurity firm and the makers of the world’s only 100% American-made antivirus software, announced it was awarded the “2019 Best Performance Award” by the 2019 AV-Test Awards.

“PC Matic upholds its product pledge to its users: good malware protection while maintaining a low system load. This deserves the Performance Award”, says Andreas Marx, CEO of AV-TEST. “Hardly any other software was able to achieve such stellar results in the category of performance in the annual test. Which is why PC Matic receives the Performance Award for consumer software.”

PC Matic, receiving the highest honors awarded in the performance category by the “2019 AV-Test Awards,” was awarded this honor after meeting the high standards put forth by the AV-Test Institute. The awards, honoring products and companies that clearly differentiate themselves from their competitors, are only awarded to products who prove their technical superiority by making a high-performance finish in the AV-Test labs throughout the test period of an entire year”

“Reliable cybersecurity solutions are more important than ever,” said PC Matic CEO Rob Cheng, “PC Matic aims to simplify cybersecurity processes and harden our users’ cyber-infrastructure as cybercriminals continue to try and take advantage of Americans.” Cheng went on to thank the AV-Test Institute, adding “this recognition is a testament to the hard work and dedication that our team has committed to cybersecurity solutions, and we are forever grateful for this honor.”

PC Matic is the only cybersecurity solution provider that is 100% developed, supported, and researched in the United States.

Sioux City, Iowa, April 1, 2019 – PC Matic Pro, America’s Antivirus, announced today that CRN®, a brand of The Channel Company, has given PC Matic Pro a 5-Star rating in its 2019 Partner Program Guide. This annual guide identifies the strongest and most successful partner programs in the channel today, offered by the top technology suppliers for IT products and services. The 5-Star rating recognizes an elite subset of companies that offer solution providers the best partnering elements in their channel programs.

To determine the 2019 5-Star ratings, The Channel Company’s research team assessed each supplier’s partner program based on investments in program offerings, partner profitability, partner training, education and support, marketing programs and resources, sales support, and communication.

PC Matic Pro’s Channel Program is designed to drive partner success by aligning key capabilities of its innovative security platform with partner business models that are evolving to encompass professional and managed security services, including a strong emphasis on proactive detection with their automated whitelist technology, malicious script blocking, and RDP controls. PC Matic Pro offers substantial profit margins, a designated field sales team, lead generation offers, and a generous commission program.

“With new technologies emerging every year, evaluating which IT vendors to partner with grows increasingly more complex for solution providers,” said Bob Skelley, CEO, The Channel Company. “We are proud the CRN Partner Program Guide has become the trusted resource to identify the most rewarding partner programs and provides crucial insight into their strengths and benefits for the channel.”

“The PC Matic Pro channel program was established to empower partners to deliver PC Matic Pro’s unique, proactive security solution to their clients to ensure the protection of their most critical digital assets,” said Rob Cheng, PC Matic Pro founder and CEO, as well as 2019 CRN Channel Chief. “We are beyond honored to be recognized by CRN for our innovations in the channel. This honor stands as a testament to the value we deliver to partners as they move to deliver a security solution that effectively prevents modern cyber threats.”

The 2019 Partner Program Guide will be featured in the April issue of CRN and online at www.CRN.com/ppg.
