The Premium TV PC review board test machine was an old 2004 Toshiba Satellite laptop computer with a Windows XP operating system, SP3, and DSL broadband connection. We decided to use this machine because many consumers today are still using old computers.

The other peripherals included a Hard Drive with 93.1 GB, RAM of 1,024 MB, and a CPU 3.0GHz Intel Pentium 4.

This software package fell from the #1 spot to the #2 due to the "Scan for Available Channels" isn't working properly, and tech support's unresponsiveness as of late. It is suggested if pursuing this software to first contact the merchant to check his response time and ask when they will correct the Scan for Channels issue. Satellite TV Cube Platinum is another popular software service. There are only two things that really stands out about this package and one of them is sports. If you love all kinds of sporting events, then perhaps the Cube can satisfy your appetite. But other then that, there is nothing really fancy about this package--even the features are very basic.

Also, the audio and video quality are good to excellent, and the loading/playback time is good. And when looking at the top of the player's, six icons are displayed such as, TV Channels, Radio Channels, Movies/Trailers, Live Sports, Extras, and Update.

Clicking the TV Channels and Radio Channels brings up the channels/videos in their respective Countries which are displayed on the left side. And there you have it.

Most of the channels/stations worked and played within 30 seconds. However, the disappointment came when clicking the Movies/Trailer icon as most of the videos didn’t play. We tried three consecutive days to play those channels and many of them still didn’t work. Perhaps the merchant will fix this soon but the way things are now, it decreases the value somewhat.

If you are sports fans, a simple click on the Live Sports icon opens a website in another browser where sports listings are located. This is where you will find all kinds of sports listings with dates and times. What’s really cool about this is it tells you exactly where the games are playing and provides the links to the websites and/or TV players to watch them.

Also, we gave props to the merchant for providing it members troubleshooting procedures in the all-in-one member’s area. When reading this it became apparent these guys are really trying to help newbie users by quickly resolving small issues that can occur. This guide relates to all PC Satellite TV software products for purchase on this site, as well as other Satellite for PC software (TV player) not on this site. The same requirements are standard for all of them, no matter what brand name is used. This guide applies to, all Windows-based OS (operating systems). As for Linux and MAC OS, it’s best to contact the merchant with questions. That said, the first thing for a Windows-based user to do is know his/her computer system. This will ensure your computer meets all system requirements.

Determining Windows Operating System Installed

The "winver" command will give you an About Windows window that makes it easy to determine which Windows operating system you have installed on your computer.
To determine the Windows operating system installed:

Click the Start button, then click Run
In the Open: box, type winver, then click the OK button
On the About Windows window, note the version of the Windows operating system installed on your computer
Click the OK button.

A window will pop open with information about your system. You should write down the following information:

With the System Information window still open, do the following:

Scroll down, click the plus (+) next to Storage, then click drives

Write down the following:

Look for your hard drive icon and right click on it. Generally, this will be Local Disk C
Look for Free space and write it down. For instance, 32,311,308,288 or 30.0 GB

Internet Explorer or Netscape:

If you have Internet Explorer or unsure, do the following:

With the System Information window still open, do the following:

Scroll down, click the plus (+) next to Internet Settings
Click Internet Explorer if not opened, then click Summary

Write down the following:

Version (Internet Explorer) - For instance, 7.05730.13 (version 7)

Note: If you have Netscape, this information should be in this location. However if you are using a different OS such as Vista, you will have to find all the above information for your computer.

Display Resolution:

Again with the System Information window open, do the following:

Scroll down, click the plus (+) next to Components
Then click Display

Write down the following:

Resolution - For instance, 1440 x 900 x 60 hertz

Note: If you can’t find the System Information on your computer. Try doing a search for “system information” + name of your OS on the Net for your computer’s operating system. For instance, “system information” + vista - be sure to enter quotes and + symbol.

At this point, you should have all the necessary information needed to see if your computer is compatible to any one of the PC Satellite TV software. And if you want to make absolutely sure, just email your computer’s system information to tech support. They will tell you whether or not your computer is compatible.

Required Free Software Downloads:

Note: If you are unsure what other applications are required for your computer, please contact your computer manufacturer.

7. Click Yes.
8. Repeat steps 6 and 7 until each non-required process is closed
9. Click the "X" button to close the window

To close other programs using Windows Me/98:

1. Hold down the Ctrl and Alt keys on the keyboard, then tap the Delete key once.
Note: Holding the Ctrl and Alt keys, then tapping the Delete key two times consecutively will restart your computer. Any program(s) which have been closed will restart when the system restarts.

2. Click a program other than the required programs listed below to select it, and then click the End Task button.

Required Programs (Do not end):

explorer
systray
Note: If prompted by a Close Program message, click the End Task button.

3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 until all non-required programs are closed.
Notes:

If you have a large download in progress, slow it down or stop it when listening – the player needs a steady stream of data from the internet.

Clear your browser's cache and enable your browser's cookies (applies when TV player is embedded in browser).

Restarting the computer will refresh your computer's resources.

To restart your computer:

If using Windows® Vista®, click the Start button, click the arrow next to the Lock this computer button, then click Restart
If using Windows XP, click the Start button, click Turn Off Computer, then click Restart
If using Windows 2000, click the Start button, click Shut down, click the What do you want your computer to do? drop-down menu, select Restart, then click the OK button
If using Windows 98/Me click the Start button, then click Shut Down. Select Restart and click OK.

So you will want to protect your computer from them, even though these PC Satellite TV merchants says their software are safe spyware/adware-free. This doesn’t mean that everything else you download from the Net thereon will be spyware/adware-free. You may not already know this but these products are not standalone software. They rely on other software in order for them to work. It’s best to download them now to see if the downloading goes well and the TV player software actually works. IMPORTANT! The one crucial area here is making sure that you follow all system requirements. You must know your OS (operating system) and download a software that’s compatible to your OS. Otherwise, the merchant’s PC Satellite TV player will not work, once downloaded.

3. Realplayer - read all instructions, system requirements and download the latest version or correct version according to your OS.

4. Apple QuickTime - read all instructions entirely including system requirements and download the latest version or correct version, according to your operating system.

For MAC and Linux OS users, many of these free software products are not required. However, it’s important to know which PC Satellite TV software package is compatible to your computer’s OS. These are five tips to follow in preparation to safeguarding your computer and for a smother PC Satellite TV software download/installation process. Tip #5 and #6 don’t have to be performed now. You can wait until you actually download one of the software packages from my PC Satellite TV Review page. But you will have to pay the small one-time downloading fee. When downloading all the free software in Tip #5, you have the opportunity to test the free software on your computer to see if they work first before spending any money. This applies to Windows-based and Vista OS.

As for MAC and Linux users, the best thing to do is follow the merchants downloading process for all that’s requirement. You can also ask the merchant questions by sending an email. I use a Windows-based OS so I’m not familiar with all the requirements.

I didn't including this information as a tip, because I'm not exactly sure anymore whether or not it's needed. Sometimes certain video codecs (particularly some movies) didn't play in the Ares TV player. I had to download the VLC Player to play those movies. I'm not certain why this happened. But if you run across an issue like the I'm describing, just use the VLC player instead--it works great. Sometimes you'll get the audio with Ares but not the video.
