What Happens on April 1, 2009?

Systems infected with the latest version of Conficker will begin to use a new algorithm to determine what domains to contact. Microsoft has not identified any other actions scheduled to take place on April 1, 2009. It is possible that systems with the latest version of Conficker may be updated with a newer version of Conficker on April 1 by contacting domains on the new domain list. However, these systems could be updated on any date before or after April 1 as well using the "peer-to-peer" updating channel in the latest version of Conficker.

On February 12, 2009, Microsoft announced a U.S. $250,000 reward for information that results in the arrest and conviction of those responsible for illegally launching the Conficker malicious code on the Internet. Microsoft's reward offer stems from the company's recognition that the Conficker worm is a criminal attack. Microsoft wants to help the authorities catch the criminals responsible for it. Residents of any country are eligible for the reward, in accordance with the laws of that country, because Internet viruses affect the Internet community worldwide. (source)

Once this virus infects a computer it does a number of things including:

Extracts all of its files to the %System% directory with random DLL file names, which can wreak havoc on your computer.
Deletes the user's Restore Points.
Registers a services called Netsvcs
Creates scheduled tasks that execute all of the DLL files.
Creates it's own simple HTTP server on the infected computer and spreads the worm to other computers in the network through file shares.
Creates an Autorun.inf file in file shares to execute the warm files once the share is accessed by another computer.
Connects to external sites to download additional files.

Firstly you may download Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool
This tool checks your computer for infection by specific, prevalent malicious software (including Blaster, Sasser, and Mydoom) and helps to remove the infection if it is found. Microsoft will release an updated version of this tool on the second Tuesday of each month.

The most critical and obvious protection is to make sure the Microsoft patch is applied. Network administrators can also use a blocklist provided by F-Secure to try and stop the worm's attempts to connect to Web sites.

And finally, you can disable Autorun so that a PC won't suffer automatic attack from an infected USB drive or other removable media when it's connected. The Internet Storm Center links to one method for doing so at http://nick.brown.free.fr/blog/2007/10/memory-stick-worms.html, but the instructions involve changing the Windows registry and should only be attempted by adminstrators or tech experts. Prevent Virus & Malware Spreading through USB / Thumb drives

Removable USB/thumb drives use the Autorun feature to load files when the drives are plugged into the USB port. Malware exploits the Autorun feature to spread from thumb drive to PC. Disable the autorun feature to prevent malware from spreading.

Windows XP Pro users: Click Start and then click Run. Type gpedit.msc and click OK. The Group Policy window will open. In the left pane, double-click Administrative Templates
In the right pane, double-click System, scroll down the list and double-click Turn Off Autoplay
In the Turn Off Autoplay Properties window, select Enabled. From the dropdown next to Turn Off Autoplay on, select All drives and then click OK. Exit Group Policy by selecting File, then choosing Exit from the menu.

XP Home users will need to make the changes by editing the registry directly. To begin, click Start and then click Run
Type regedit and click OK. The Registry Editor window will open.
In the left pane, navigate to:

With Explorer highlighted, in the right-pane right click the value NoDriveTypeAutoRun and select Modify from the drop down menu. The base value will be set to Hexadecimal. If not, select Hexadecimal.

Note that this will stop Autorun on removable/USB drives, but still allow it on CD ROM drives. If you want to disable autorun on both, substitute b5 for the 95. (Thanks to Ian L. of Manitoba for the tip).
Exit Registry Editor by selecting File, then choosing Exit from the menu.
You will now need to reboot your computer for the changes to take effect.

"I recently encountered a virus. I thought I got rid of it but apparently it is still there. I have been looking through my files and for the ones I don't know what they are I delete them. To schedule boot scan follow the steps below:-

Right click on the Avast system tray icon
Click on “Start Avast Anti Virus”
Avast anti virus window will pop up and run a memory scan
Once memory scan finish, you can right click on the Avast anti virus window and select “Schedule Boot Time Scan”
“Schedule Boot Time Scan” window will popup, select “Scan all local disk” and check on “Advanced Options”
For normal infected file select “Move infected files to Chest” and select “No action” for system files and Press “Schedule” button.
Avast will prompt you for restart to perform Boot time scan and click “Yes” to reboot and start the scan.

Remove the Ads from Yahoo Messenger

If you install Yahoo Messenger 8.0, you'll notice a very annoying animated ad at the bottom of the main window.

How to get rid of the ads?

1. Close Yahoo Messenger.

2. Save this .bat file and execute it.

You won't be able to enter the chat rooms, so if you use this feature, don't run the patch.

The .bat file you've just downloaded edits most registry values related to the ads in Yahoo Messenger from HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ Yahoo\pager\YUrl, replacing the data with a dummy asterisk. Here's the list of string values:

This fix doesn't work for Yahoo Messenger 9 Beta. Here's a way to disable the ads in Yahoo Messenger 9.0.0.907 (note that this approach breaks Yahoo Messenger's terms of service):

* close Yahoo Messenger

* backup the file C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\YahooMessenger.exe (create a new copy)

* download a hex editor like HxD

* open C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\YahooMessenger.exe in the hex editor

* go to the offset 295928 (in HxD: Search/GoTo)

* look at the right column and replace y from "y.m.s.g.r.a.d.s" with p

* save the file and close HxD.

If you know a better way that doesn't involve editing the exe file, post it in the comments.

Do you ever get annoyed with the Windows Security Center Pop-Up telling you that you are not protected because you do not have any Anti-Virus Software, or Automatic Updates is turned off? Well so was I. That is why I searched the internet for the answer and I finally found it. In light of that here are detailed instructions on how to disable those Balloon hint tips from the Windows Security Center.

1.	Click Start and then click Control Panel.
2.	Double-click Security Center.
3.	In the Security Center, under Resources, click Change the way Security Center alerts me.
4.	In the Alert Settings dialog box, clear the Firewall, Automatic Updates, or Virus Protection check boxes, and then click OK.

When you use this procedure, the Security Center still displays your status, but does not send you alerts.

Change the Windows User Password via Command Line

Are you an administrator on the Windows operating system with multiple user accounts? Have you forgotten the password to one of those accounts and you are locked out? Then, provided you are the administrator, you can reset the password from the command line.

To open the Windows command line, just go to your start menu then choose “run” (or press your Windows key and then press R). Then in the box that pops up, type cmd and press enter.

In the black box that comes up, type net user then enter. This will give you a list of all your Windows accounts on that computer.

To change the password for one of these accounts is very simple. Say the Windows account name is asks and you want to change the password to mypa$$word then you just need to type the following :

net user asks mypa$$word

After pressing enter, you should then get a message saying “the command completed successfully”. That means the password has now been changed and you can now log into that account.

Protect your PC while Running Suspicious Programs

As a general rule of thumb, you should never download freeware apps unless it comes from a reputable source. Otherwise you could be letting yourself in for a whole lot of trouble if that cool little freeware app happens to contain malicious code. However if you MUST try out a new program which has come from dubious sources, you can use a Windows feature to protect your PC.

When you have downloaded the program, don’t double-click to install it just yet. First, right-click on the program icon and choose “run as”. When the “run as” box comes up, you’ll see the following box above

Select “current user” and make sure the “protect my computer and data from unauthorized program activity” box is ticked. Then click OK. You can then do a limited installation of the program in “safe mode” so you can check it out. Having the “protect my computer” option ticked means that the Registry can be read by the application but the application can’t change anything in the Registry. So if there is any rogue code in that freeware app, it won’t wreak any havoc on your PC.

When you are convinced that the app is OK, come out of the safe mode and install the program properly.

Disabling File Sharing in P2P programs

While you download a file using P2P it will not only download the file but also will upload a portion of the downloaded file causing more bandwidth usage, thus slow down your internet network connection. Peer-to-peer file sharing software (like Kazaa) turn users' computers into servers that allow other users to connect to your computer and download any files you share. Many of the file sharing programs install with the file sharing feature enabled to use the maximum bandwidth available.

When you disabling file sharing, you will still be able to download files and use other features of your P2P software. Disabling file sharing only limits the ability of other Internet users to download content you share. This will, in effect, slightly improve speed of your Internet connection as you will no longer compete over bandwidth with anonymous users around the world.

How To Disable File Sharing
The process is very easy though different for various programs. Instructions for some of the most popular software are detailed below.

Ares

1. Select Control Panel.
2. In the General tab clear "Load Ares when windows starts" and check "Exit Ares when I click on close button" options.
3. In the Transfer tab under "Bandwidth" change the "Upload bandwidth" value from "0" (zero) to "1".

Bearshare

1. Select Setup and then Options.
2. In the Options tab clear the "Launch BearShare on System Startup" and set the "When I click close" to "Close Immediately".
3. In the Connection tab set "Bandwidth Capacity" to "Asymmetric" and then set the "Kbps Out" value to "0" (zero).
4. In the Uploads tab clear everything under "Sharing" and set the minimum and maximum "Connections" values to "1".

eDonkey

1. Select Options.
2. In the General section clear the "Launch on Startup" and "Close to System Tray" options.
3. In the Network section check "Limit Uploads Speed" option and set the value to "1" KB/s.

Gnotella

1. Select Setup and then "Shared Files" tab.
2. Clear all entries under "Shared Files".
3. Set the "Maximum number of search results sent" value to "0" (zero).
4. Clear the "Web Interface" option.
5. Remove all entries from "Extentions".

Kazaa

1. Select Tools and then Options from the menu.
2. In the My Kazaa tab clear "Launch Kazaa automatically" option.
3. In the Sharing tab clear "Share files in 'My Shared Folder'".

7. In the Firewall tab clear the "Use port 80 as alternative for incoming connections".

LimeWire

1. Select Tools and then Options from the menu.
2. In the Sharing section clear the "Share Finished Downloads" option.
3. In the Uploads (Basic) section use the slider to set "Upload Bandwidth" to the lowest setting possible.
4. In the System Tray section set the "Shutdown Behavior" to "Shutdown Immediately".

Morpheus

1. Select Preferences or Setup (depending on what skin/version you're using).
2. In the File Transfer section set all the upload limits to "1" and "Maximum simultaneous upload" to "1".

Shareaza

1. Select Tools and then "Shareaza Settings".
2. In the General section clear "Start Shareaza at Windows startup" option.
3. In the Connection section for Inbound Address set the "Speed" value to "3 KB/s".
4. Set the "Can accept incoming connections" to "No".
5. In the Uploads section set the "Bandwidth" limit to "1 kb/s".
6. If, on Exit, Shareaza prompts you to select shut down action, choose "Shut down Shareaza immediately".

volume Specifies the drive letter (followed by a colon),

/C NTFS only: Files created on the new volume will be compressed
by default.
/X Forces the volume to dismount first if necessary. All opened
handles to the volume would no longer be valid.
/A:size Overrides the default allocation unit size. Default settings
are strongly recommended for general use.
NTFS supports 512, 1024, 2048, 4096, 8192, 16K, 32K, 64K.
FAT supports 512, 1024, 2048, 4096, 8192, 16K, 32K, 64K,
(128K, 256K for sector size > 512 bytes).
FAT32 supports 512, 1024, 2048, 4096, 8192, 16K, 32K, 64K,
(128K, 256K for sector size > 512 bytes).

Note that the FAT and FAT32 files systems impose the
following restrictions on the number of clusters on a volume:

FAT: Number of clusters <= 65526
FAT32: 65526 < Number of clusters < 4177918

Format will immediately stop processing if it decides that
the above requirements cannot be met using the specified
cluster size.

NTFS compression is not supported for allocation unit sizes
above 4096.

/F:size Specifies the size of the floppy disk to format (1.44)
/T:tracks Specifies the number of tracks per disk side.
/N:sectors Specifies the number of sectors per track.

Example

You notice several other values in the listing. The filename has to be changed manually unfortunately because Myspace is using that random mp3 name script to avoid direct links to their mp3 songs. The Leech Timeout displays the time that you have to start the mp3 download. You need to play the mp3 again on Myspace if you did not make it in that time.

The Myspace mp3 download were incredibly fast. I hit the download button and it said completed almost immediately. Not sure how fast it is on slower connections though. The music needs to be playing during the download, make sure it is because the download will fail otherwise.
