by Paulette Cohn

The only innocent man who was in Alcatraz at the time the inmates and guards mysteriously vanished 50 years ago returns to the present on tonight’s episode — but now he seems to be fulfilling the only option he feels is open to him: committing crimes.

“Clarence Montgomery (guest star Mahershala Ali), shouldn’t have been in prison, but because of his race, he is treated a certain way and put in Alcatraz,” Sarah Jones, who plays Detective Rebecca Madden, explains the storyline in an exclusive interview, but she won’t reveal why Clarence has gone over to the dark side.

What she does reveal is the most interesting thing she learned about Alcatraz, if she would like to see a romance in Dr. Diego Soto’s (Jorge Garcia) future and the fact that she had actually planned to be a dancer, rather than an actress.

“Alcatraz” airs Monday nights at 9 p.m. on FOX.

Growing up were you a tomboy who wanted to play cops and robbers, so this show is a dream come true?

Actually, no. I wouldn’t say I was a girlie girl, but I fell in love with ballet at really young age. I grew up doing that: dancing, dancing, dancing. That is what I thought I was going to do professionally, actually. So, no cops and robbers for me, but it is still a dream job to have — to be able to work with the people I work with and for someone like J.J. Abrams.

What kind of training did you take?

I took up boxing and I started running. If you have seen the show, you know she runs quite a bit. I learned how to shoot my gun, which is a Glock 26. I am not much of a gun person, but that is what she uses. I learned how to shoot that and all the things that come along with busting down doors and having to clear spaces.

Rebecca hasn’t really dealt with the fact that she found out that Ray (Robert Forster) is her biological uncle as opposed to a family friend who raised her.

I think that given the task force that she is involved in, I don’t think she has a ton of time to process beyond what she has to do in that moment. She has to get the job done, which is finding the criminal who comes back to the present day. Even more so, she is pretty damn focused on getting to her grandfather, dealing with him and trying to figure out the mystery that involves Alcatraz. I think she thinks if she figures that out there will be a lot more answers to why Ray didn’t tell her they are biologically related.

It seems that blood is the key to the mystery. Any comment?

I don’t want to give too much away. There was a hint in an episode that talked about Tommy’s [Tommy Madsen, Rebecca's grandfather] blood — and last week, Rebecca took notice of that.

Her grandfather killed her partner. They do come face-to-face at some point. How will she deal with that?

She doesn’t have a relationship with him. It is not emotional in the sense of: “How could my grandfather do this to me?” It is emotional in the sense that her partner is dead and it so happens that she is related to the guy that killed him. I think her intention is that she is going to do what she does with all the criminals. She is going to take him back to Hauser to try to get as many answers as she can. She is prepared to do whatever she has to do to restrain him.

Do you have a theory as to why these people are coming back? Or maybe you know?

I am definitely in the dark. I do have a couple of theories, but I am not going to mention them, because one of those theories gets addressed in episode 13, the final episode, so I am not going to give that away.

It seems as if Tommy might be innocent to me and he was framed to get his blood, but Ray did say, “I thought he was innocent and then I had to accept he was guilty,” but I still wonder. Will we find that out?

Actually, I think that question will be answered.

Coming off “Lost” — another series with a big mystery, has Jorge given you any advice about this one?

No, but he is incredibly supportive and I consider him a dear friend. I just love Jorge. You just have to roll with the punches. You have to get the script and make the most of it you can.

Do you think Doc will have a romance with the medical examiner — they were flirting?

They were flirting. They have the love for comic books in common. Nikki is one pretty lady played by the lovely Jeananne Goossen. I hope to see that relationship blossom. It would be cute.

What is the most interesting thing you learned about Alcatraz?

I think it is more ironic than anything, but considering how Alcatraz housed the worse of the worse, it had the reputation for serving the best food in the prison system. I don’t know why I got a quick out of that.

Enter Adam Brock, and a replay of his sobbing/blubbering/crying. Randy asks if this is his dream, and Adam shows that he has real math skills, when he says he can sum it up in 3 words: “I have to sing.” Um, dude, that’s 4 words. Luckily, he was being judged on his singing ability; after all the melodrama, he was put through. Was there ever a doubt? Why else would we have been made to suffer along with Adam? I wonder who the holdout was that didn’t make this unanimous?

Up next, Jeremy Rosado, who wowed the judges with his final performance. This kid does have a voice. They also commended him for his behavior during Hollywood Week, when he cheered on his fellow contestants. Nice kid, and he was unanimously put through.

Shannon Magrane forgot her lyrics during group day, but more than redeemed herself during her solo performance. Her final song wowed the judges, and gave J-Lo goosies. The judges reminded Shannon that they looked at the whole thing, the viewers were reminded of Steven’s faux pas, and they put her through. After she left the room, Steven asked, “Does your Daddy still hate me?”

Scott Dangerfield had to pull out last year during Hollywood, but felt that he did well this year. He also thought the judges’ criticism was on point. J-Lo loved him last year, but didn’t recapture the same feeling this year. I guess sometimes you just can’t go back. Buh-bye, Scott, come back next year.

Skylar Laine said that her final song was not up to her own standards, but the judges felt that she was consistent with who she was since Day 1. Steven would like her to add a little rock to her country. Let’s see if she does, as she joins the Top 24.

Snippets of the green light for Hallie Day, Chase Likens and Aaron Marcellus. I guess we’ll get to know them better (if at all) next week. Are you keeping count? We’re up to 21.

Deandre Brackensick was told no at this same point last year. J-Lo LOVED his final song selection, and could see the difference from last year. That makes 22.

Can you feel the tension? Only 2 spots left!

Baritone Jermaine Jones started losing his composure while he was waiting, and continued to cry as soon as he sat down. Randy told him he did great in the initial audition, then had up and down performances. J-Lo told him he was a joy to watch during the process. Randy thinks he has talent, but needs work. Comeback, now, ya hear? Jermaine tearfully hugged the judges goodbye, and they were also visibly upset.

Lotsa tears this year. I’d rather see more singing. Just sayin’.

Ariel Sprague, Shelby Tweten and Hollie Cavanaugh were sent in together to find out who would get the final slot for the girls. We were reminded that Steven didn’t think Ariel was ready when she first auditioned. Hollie impressed with her final performance. Hollie made it; the other two were told to work it out and come back.

Eben Franckewitz and David Leathers, Jr. were sent in together to find out who would get the final slot. Both were told that they had very special voices. David was told that he had rough moments and was sometimes overconfident. Eben was told that he was sometimes underconfident. Eben was put through, and David was told to work it out and come back.

Side note: It seems kinda cruel to send in a duo or trio, especially when they are kids. It takes some of the celebration away from the winner, when they can’t really rejoice in front of the one(s) sent home.

Next Week: Tuesday night, the boys go live. Wednesday, the girls go live, and America votes. Results will be shown on Thursday.

BUT WAIT! The judges felt compelled to add another guy to the mix. Who will it be? Will it be Jermaine Jones? Richie Law (say it ain’t so!)? Johnny Keyser? David Leathers, Jr.? We’ll find out Tuesday.

And….I need bleach. For my eyes. Steven felt compelled to strip down to his undies, moon the camera (Thank You, American Idol Logo!) and jump into the water for a swim. Love Steven. Would rather see him fully clothed. And that’s just my opinion.

You may already recognize the name, considering she was a YouTube sensation, but in case you don’t, Stevie is someone with a passion for entertaining people, who took this passion to a new level when she started producing her own online videos from her apartment and posted them on YouTube. Garnering immediate attention, Stevie was inspired to continue creating more hilarious and original videos, drawing millions of online viewers with her dead-on impersonations of popular personalities like Justin Bieber, Kim Kardashian and more.

Well now those online viewers and millions more will have the chance to see her pop-culture comedic mash-up stylings on the small screen each week. Through comedic sketches, Stevie TV will take a humorous and satirical look at pop-culture events and moments from hit reality shows as well as the social blunders of celebrities and politicians.

Nothing is off limits when it comes to Stevie and her unique, irreverent and hilarious views on pop-culture, with parodies this season including “Real Housewives of Atlanta” star Kim Zolciak’s “Behind the Music” and Mackenzie from “Toddlers & Tiaras” expressing her true feelings about her parents. Even Facebook’s “Like” button isn’t out of reach with a sketch entitled “True Life: I’m A Liker.”

With the series created, executed produced, co-written and hosted by funny lady Stevie Ryan, you can expect a fresh take on the celebrities and phenomenon we can’t get enough of and those we definitely can.

The Final Judgement: it sounds so….final. Tonight was the start of taking 42 hopefuls down to the Top 24, made up of 12 girls and 12 guys. And starting with the live shows next week, America will vote on who goes and who stays.

Yesterday, unseen except for some selected clips, the performers sang one final time. They selected their song as well as the one instrument which would accompany them, the purpose being to showcase their voice. The judges would take into account not only this performance, but the performer’s entire journey. I guess they had clips to watch, too. Or they took REALLY good notes.

Up first was Jen Hirsh, whose final performance seemingly underwhelmed Randy. As she was seated and waiting for her fate, Randy went on and on about how they were looking for the best, and how it was up to America after this. Steven chimed in that it wasn’t easy. But…she made it! Randy thanked Jen for auditioning, saying she was one of the best singers this year.

Next, Creighton Fraker. Back story: he was adopted by a preacher, growing up singing in church, but felt the strong pull of Rock ‘N Roll. Come to find out his birth father was in an 80′s metal band. J-Lo told him it came down to who was most consistent, and who they believed had that special something. They believe in Creighton. Two down, 22 to go.

Lauren Gray had a rough time during the competetion (There’s no crying in music!). Randy observed that it got rough for her from Hollywood week on, and that she needed to learn to believe in herself. Buh-bye, come back next year. She’s not sure if she will.

Joshua Ledet, another preacher’s kid, was told by Randy that sometimes the better singers don’t make it, and that this season was tough. Yeah, he made it. J-Lo thinks he’s special.

Blair Sieber and Naomi Gillies weren’t so lucky, and are going home.

Haley Johnsen got stronger with each round, especially in Vegas. Steven told her that “So many people last year sang good, but didn’t have that piece that was missing.” Haley, however, is going through.

Neco Starr, was told that they not only have to look at the best voices, but also whether they’re ready and know who they are as an artist. He was advised to grow into who he is, and was sent packing. Joining him are Clayton Farhat, River St. James, and Caleb Johnson. Caleb forgot the lyrics during his final performance, asked to start over (repeatedly), and then asked for water. Yeah…No.

Elsie Testone had received varying feedback about how she did during her performances, but she made it. Randy said she was one of the best singers they’d seen. Didn’t he just say that?

Reed Grimm accompanied himself on drums during his final performance. This guy really DOES march to the beat of a different drummer! Pun intended. Do the judges think he can do more than scat and be quirky? Apparently so. At least he has a personality.

That takes the count to 6.

Erika Van Pelt made a poor song selection for her final performance as far as J-Lo was concerned. She was told “A lot of people blow us away, and a lot didn’t do as amazing as we thought they’d do. You were one of those people. Yesterday was difficult, and we have to decide who we’re going to take a chance on.” They’re taking a chance on Erika.

Chelsea Sorrell forgot the lyrics in Hollywood, but Steven allowed her a do-over because he thought she had an amazing voice. J-lo and Randy said they picked amazing singers that blew them away, and she had made it.

Baylie Brown was rejected 5 years ago, and Steven told her that her consistency this year was sometimes good, and sometimes a little (downward hand motion.) She was good enough to put through.

Richie Law, aka The Cowboy, was told that he had good moments and gave it his best effort each time. Buh-bye. And I’m not sorry to see this kid go, either.

Heejun Han was still nervous and overwhelmed. Turns out he works with special needs kids that he credits with pulling him out of a depression. After his final song, J-Lo told him he had a beautiful, buttery tone. His plan was to hug her no matter the outcome. Steven told him he was a good singer, but a better star. They were all touched by his singing. His tears were of joy, as he hugged all of them. I love this guy! His commentary alone is keeping things entertaining.

We’re up to 10.

Jessica Sanchez has a big voice in a small 16-yr old frame. When we saw what seemed to be her entire final performance, it was obvious that she’d be put through.

Phil Phillips had a rough Hollywood round, and Randy called him unique and different. He also said that they never know how those qualities will play in front of everybody else. I guess America will decide. It helps that this guy is likeable, too.

Colton Dixon went home last year at this exact same point. He dedicated his final song to his sister, who was cut last week. The judges clapped after his performance, and he made it through this year.

Brielle von Hugel was eliminated in Hollywood last year, and this year we got to know stage mom Camille. Oy! The judges loved her performances and get up and go as well as her fearlessness. Have they met 4th judge Mom? On she goes. Will Mom help or hinder her?

Adam Brock’s final performance inspired J-Lo to call it too loungy, and she told him he had to figure out who he was. Randy was also not impressed. Adam started crying even before the results were in, since music is so important to him. OK, he was blubbering. The judges aren’t sure that he believes in himself, and said that their decision was NOT unanimous. Stay tuned for that decision when The Final Judgement returns tomorrow with the final 10.

The Blind Auditions are winding down, and the coaches are pickier than ever. Adam has 5 slots to fill, and the others have 6 each.

Ducky, 26, looks nothing like Jon Cryer in Pretty in Pink. This mural painter sang Tighten Up, but the coaches all sat tight. Adam was tempted, but explained that they were all kinda talking, but no one wanted to commit. Cee Lo said he was looking for the best; I guess Ducky fell short of that. Blake and Xtina both acknowledged that they would probably regret their decision, but they commented on Ducky’s mustache.

Jonathas sang U Got It Bad, and the crowd loved him right away; Blake commented that he must be good-looking based on the crowd’s reaction. Nice voice, nice moves, and Cee Lo and Xtina both turned around. Cee Lo said he thought he’d been pranked and would turn to see Usher. Xtina wanted to mold and package him, reminding everyone that she had been performing since she was 4. Jonathas admitted that he’d always had the hots for Xtina. LOL! Guess it was only natural that he’d pick Team Xtina!

Monique Benabou, 23, sang Mr. Know It All. Xtina was the only one to turn, encouraged by Blake telling her that she could do something with her. Monique gushed over the coaches, and Cee Lo told her she did a great job. Blake assured her that he thinks “Xtina is the best female vocalist of our generation. Congrats.” Xtina found Monique’s tone to be nice and genuinely consistent.

Naia Kete, 21, is a street performer with her little brother and boyfriend. Hearing her The Lazy Song, Blake turned, telling the others to not push their buttons. He was followed by Cee Lo. Blake asked Cee Lo, “What’s wrong with you?” Blake told her that she looked giddy and excited, which is how he felt inside after hearing her different voice. Yeah….Blake loves the ones with the different voices. Cee Lo reminded her that he had pushed his buttons, to which she responded, “Cee Lo, you push all my buttons, I must say.” Adam laughed that it was the first time they’d heard the flirting from that side of the stage. Xtina said her voice reminded her of one of Blake’s artists. Campaigning, smack talk, and Naia went with her gut and chose Blake. Blake strutted.

Erick Macek, 31, put a folksy spin on Free Fallin’, and Blake was tempted, but no one was willing to commit. Yeah…good call. He was good, but not great.

Charlotte Sometimes, 23, survived a jaw disease that required surgery and wiring her jaw shut, and began to write songs while she recuperated. Her Apologize had great attitude, and got responses from all 4 coaches. Adam thought she was amazing and unique, Blake said she reminded him of Season 1 Team Blake member Xenia, who has a record deal. Xtina said she was strong the whole way through, and Cee Lo said she was like a flower opening up. Smack talk, campaigning, and Team Blake got another member. More gloating from Blake, who gloats VERY well!

Troy Vincent, 38, has been on Broadway in Rent, the revival of Jesus Christ Superstar and Green Day’s American Idiot. His We Are the Champions definitely displayed his stage voice, and the crowd liked him too. Cee Lo turned around, and then smack talked the other 3 for not turning. Blake said Cee Lo was king of over-the-top performances, so they should be a good fit.

Anthony Evans, 33, is a pastor’s kid, and wanted to define himself as something other than a gospel act. He sang What’s Going On. I thought he’d have a stronger voice, but it was strong enough for Xtina, who admired the execution of his runs. Blake said he had tried to get Xtina to push her button, and Cee Lo had been tempted.

Jamie Lono, 22, is a sandwich shop employee in Chicago. Oh, and he had half of his left lung removed as a child. His Folsom Prison Blues was bluesy and unique. Adam turned almost immediately, and told him that he’d make sure he never had to make a sandwich again. Cee Lo also turned, and suggested they hook up, since he eats sandwiches. I guess Cee Lo’s sweet talk just won out over Adam’s praise.

Dylan Chambers, 19, sang Valerie, and no one turned around. I thought he belonged on a show like Glee, and his dance moves were oddly reminiscent of Tom Jones/Engelbert Humperdinck. Adam said he was close, Cee Lo was waiting for the big note, and Xtina reminded him that the bar was really high this year, and they were looking for magic. Ouch. Also unsuccessful were Nathan Anderson, Luna Searles and Adam Lasher.

Justin Hopkins, 30, had been a guitarist with Carson Daly’s House Band. He sang Babylon, and the crowd liked him from the start. Cee Lo turned at almost the very end of the song, and commented on his unique voice. The others busted Cee Lo on how he phrases and delivers his comments.

Nicolle Galyon, 27, is a country singer that plays piano. She is insistent that the piano can be a country instrument. She sang You Save Me, and Adam turned around, and then promptly called the other 3 stupid and dumb for staying put. Also successful were Ashley De La Rosa (Team Christina with Shark in the Water…Xtina said she was strong), Jordan Rager (Team Blake with Chicken Fried…Blake said he was a a real, genuine country singer and he’s the only one that gets it), Karla Davis (Team Adam with If I Die Young…Adam heard something pure, kinda perfect and amazing in her voice),and ALyX (Team Blake with Just Like a Pill…Blake heard something special in her voice).

Eric Tipton, 31, described himself as a 6′ tall 300-lb white guy that sings soul. His You Make My Dreams was lacking in soul, and was rather karaoke. Cee Lo and Adam basically told him that it was a poor song choice, as it’s hard not to think of the original Hall and Oates version.

The evening ended with Mathai, 18, whose family (and especially mother) wanted her to finish college and follow the rest of the family into the medical profession. Her Rumour Has It got the attention of Adam, who pushed his button in about 8 seconds. She also got Blake and Cee Lo to turn around. Blake announced “Attention: We are looking at a star right here. You don’t sound like anybody else I’ve heard before. Now Adam’s gonna lay a line of crap on you.” Adam agreed that she was unique, and reminded her how quickly he had pushed his button. He said she was sassy, confident and had owned it, and declared himself desperate to have her on his team. Cee Lo told her she did a great job, and he was pleasantly surprised. Xtina commended her on putting her own spin on the song. Winner: Team Adam. Blake exclaimed, “Dang it, Adam!”

One more night of Blind Auditions, with each team having 2 remaining slots. It will be interesting to see more of the people that we’ve only seen snippets of at this point.

70 hopefuls were bussed from Hollywood to Las Vegas to try to keep their dream of being the next American Idol alive. Over 100,000 tried out, and tonight, the cuts would continue until the Top 40 were selected.

The contestants would perform on the Viva Elvis Stage inside Aria in Vegas, and they would be singing classic Rock and Roll from the 50′s and 60′s. The singers would split into groups of 3 or 4, and the songs would be assigned to them. They would work with a vocal coach, but singing wouldn’t be enough. They would also have to provide the complete performance package of vocals, look and choreography. This was an elimination round, and the outcome would be known immediately after the performance.

Up first were Colton Dixon (who was cut in Hollywood during Season 10), Skylar Laine, Cari Quoyeser and Chase Likens. In rehearsal, Skylar was having difficulty with the harmonies when they sang Dedicated To the One I Love. During the performance, the harmonies were great, but Cari’s solo was unimpressive. Country singers Chase and Skylar were definitely out of their comfort zones. Cari was cut.

Youngsters David Leathers, Jr., Jeremy Rosado, Ariel Sprague and Gabi Carrabba were up next with Rockin Robin. They did extremely well, and all were put through.

Shelbey Tweter, Adam Brock, Angie Zeiderman, and Erika Van Pelt sang Great Balls of Fire, with Adam on piano. They proved that a team effort had gone into the performance, and there was a dramatic pause before announcing Angie’s fate. All were put through, with Steve telling Angie, “For a skinny little girl, you don’t have many tail feathers, but you shook ‘em. I had to say that.” Ah, there’s our Steven! How I’ve missed you!

Schyler Dixon, Brielle von Hugel and Molly Hunt sang Why Do Fools Fall In Love. Cute outfits, but it wasn’t enough to save Molly. Thankfully we were spared Brielle’s mom. Also going home were Wayne Wilson, Ashley Robles, Stephanie Renae, Tina Torres and Janelle Arthur.

Eben Franckewitz, Reed Grimm, Elise Testone and Haley Johnson put a different vibe on The Night Has a Thousand Eyes. Great chemistry, and Eben had red lip marks on his cheeks so that he would have a pop of red in his attire. Steven told them they were spot-on, unreal and over the top. Randy proclaimed them to be crazy. All 4 went through.

Jermaine Jones and Richie Law were a duo, since Jermaine lost his whole group, and Richie was kicked out of MIT. Heejun gave Jermaine his condolences, who looked ill at ease about having to perform with “The Cowboy.” Richie was his usual cocky self. This kid has a super-healthy ego, that’s for sure. Make It Easy on Yourself was their mantra, as Jermaine displayed his beautiful deep voice. He wasn’t so thrilled about the hugs Richie inflicted on him when they both were put through. The looks he gave were enough to confirm that Heejun has been ever so right!

Hallie Day, Baylie Brown and Chelsea Sorrell were also put through, though their group performances weren’t shown. We got a glimpse of vocal coach Debra Byrd. Jessica Sanchez, Deandre Berackensick and Candice Glover sang It Doesn’t Matter Anymore, and modified the song a bit with the help of vocal coach Peisha McPhee. They got to show off their voices, and all 3 went through.

End of Day 1, with a word of caution from the judges. The next day would have 10 more groups, and some of the day 1 people still faced being cut if there were better performances the next day.

Day 2 opened with Clayton Farhat, Adam Lee Decker, Curtis Gray and Scott Dangerfield singing Jailhouse Rock. Randy looked perplexed during the performance, Curtis was told he’d been a little sharp, all were told they’d have to learn to hold back individually when singing in a group, and Adam, mouthed please, please, please during the deliberations. Curtis got an early release.

Caleb Johnson, Joshua Sanders, Sasha and River sang Burning Love, and all 4 made it. Joshua Ledet, Curtis Finch, Jr., Amber and Shannon Maguire did Blue Suede Shoes. Joshua got an OMG and Curtis was told that the song was not in his musical vocabulary. Buh-bye Curtis and Amber.

Britnee Kellogg, Jessica Phillips and Courtney Williams, AKA The Neopolitans, channeled The Supremes with You Just Keep Me Hanging On. Diva attitudes also prevailed when they decided to not make use of the vocal coaches or band rehearsal, since it would have been a waste of time. They’re singers for a living, you know. Courtney was a bit much, Britnee was strong, and Jessica didn’t meet Steven’s expectations. They were told that if they took liberties, it has to be hot, spot-on and work. Buh-bye ring leader and Queen Diva Jessica. She groused that it “doesn’t seems like they’re looking for real artists. I didn’t come for a TV show, I came for a record deal. People were put through that weren’t real artists.” She really didn’t think she was going home, you know. Ha!

Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow was a swan song for Mathenee Treco, who didn’t really get to do much more than sing back-up for Wendy Taylor and Lauren Gray. We got to see vocal coach Peggi Blue at her finest, when she challenged Lauren during rehearsal with “There’s no crying in music! Are you on Ritalin? No? Then focus!” Awesome! Lauren focused, as did Wendy.

Heejun Han was scared of Peggi, especially after he looked her up online. He lost his fear when she loved their rehearsal, and thought she was sweet. I love this guy! He, Phil Phillips, Neco Starr and Jairon Jackson sang I Only Have Eyes For You. They fell to the stage in shock when all were put through, and Heejun cried. And Heejun led the praise and gratitude for Mary and Peggi.

Creighton Fraker, Jen Hirsh, Aaron Marcellus and Nick Boddington, AKA Lady and the Spectacles wrapped up the day with Sealed With a Kiss. They were praised for their harmonies and beautiful solos, but Nick got the kiss off for not doing his best in such a strong group.

Let the drama begin! The Day 1 group was called back, and reassessed. Extra cuts were taken, and we saw the last, for this season at least, of Gabi Carrabba, Schyler Dixon, Angie Zeiderman, Candice Glover, Johnny Keyser, Jairon Jackson, and Britnee Kellogg. Colton was sorry to see his sister go, bur Britnee took it the hardest. She just didn’t understand, thinking that each of her performances had been perfect. She just didn’t get it.

In all, 28 were cut, leaving 42 (Las Vegas math?)to move on to one final performance to determine the Top 24, when the viewers get a vote.

The American Idol pace has picked up, with 185 contestants, split into 42 groups, battling it out for who gets to move on to the next phase. Each group will perform, and instantly find out whether they are sent packing or on to the next phase.

The Betties are up first. They are operating on no sleep and clashing personalities, and their performance shows it. In fact, the other contestants as well as the judges appeared to be shocked and stunned, Randy called their performance really weak, which was actually generous of him. Only Jennifer Malsch and Cari Quoyeser moved on. Cherie Tucker was stunned that she was sent packing.

Groove Sauce proved that when there’s no drama and no illness, talent prevails. The group was tight, choreographed, and got a standing ovation from the judges and the other contestants. Randy let loose with catchphrase “That’s how you do it!” and J-Lo called them amazing. Tyler said they had set the bar. On to the next phase for Reed Grimm, Nick Boddington, Creighton Fraker, Aaron Marcellus and Jen Hirsh.

6-7-9‘s “parental units” had their own opinions. Especially Brielle von Hugel and her mother. Luckily, Brielle, Joshua Ledet, Shannon Magrane and Amber moved on, but left Kyle Crews behind. Now all of a sudden, Brielle’s mom loves Kyle, after previously trash talking him.

Make You Believers needed belief to pull through, as they almost became a trio after Jacquie Cera passes out. She pushed on, but it was not enough to save Dustin Cunstiff, who forgot the lyrics, Amy Brumfield, aka Tent Girl, who forgot the lyrics, or Jacquie. Only Mathenee Treco got to move on.

Enter clips of groups with no harmony, more forgotten lyrics, verbal amnesia (as Ryan put it), mumbled lyrics, made-up lyrics…you get the picture.

Those Girls and That Guy had already suffered illness and intimidation by Alisha Bernhardt, and they bored the audience and J-Lo…who yawned. Buh-bye to all of them, including Christian Lopez and Samantha Novacek.

The Hollywood 5 demonstrated that supportive parents are a help. Ariel Sprague gave J-Lo “goosies”, and they all moved on, including Eben Frackewitz, Gabi Carrubba, David Leathers, Jr., and Jeremy Rosado.

Area 451 had health issues when Imani Handy let exhaustion get the best of her and passed out. Her mom left it up to her as to whether she would continue. Continue she did, along with Bryce Garcia, who forgot the lyrics (he had a lot on his mind) and pushed away Kristi Krause (she was way off-key) and Johnny Keyser. Imani collapsed during the performance. Only Johnny made the cut, despite Imani’s pleas.

Also cut were Reis Kloeckener, Symone Black (the one who fell off the stage), and expectant dad W.T. Thompson.

MIT (Most International Team) was up next, and all was not well in this corral. Heejun Han, Jairon Jackson, Richie Law (The Cowboy) and Phillip Phillips all went on to sing again. The judges said they weren’t perfect, but they based their decision on the other times they had seen them. Heejun then apologized to Richie about the smack talk he would see when the episode aired. Hilarious guy! Can’t wait to see what else he brings. And he can sing!

Also on to the next phase are Erika Van Pelt, Hallie Day, Adam Brock and Elise Testone.

Whew! Group Rounds ended, and on to Solo Day for the remaining 98 contestants. This was their final performance, and they could sing with the American Idol house band or accompany themselves on an instrument. They would not learn their fate until the end of the day. Steven and Randy warmed up with the band and some of the contestants.

Joshua Ledet led off the day, singing with a lot of feeling. He almost didn’t come to Hollywood because of his fear of flying. I’m sure he was glad that he overcame that fear when he received a standing ovation from the judges.

Colton Dixon was up next on keyboards, and the judges clapped. Meh. Phillip Phillips played his guitar, which Randy asked about. Bluesy. Jen Hirsh displayed a great deal of tenderness and power, and got a standing ovation from the judges. Creighton Fraker: WOW! WOW! Standing ovation.

Thunderstorms rolled in, which seemed to cause people to choke. I guess if I heard thunder during my song, it would throw me off, too.

Reed Grimm had planned to sing a cappella, until he was told 30 minutes before he was to go on that it was against the rules, and he had to play an instrument or sing with the band. He wanted to talk to his mom. He was given a vocal coach to work with, who I sense wanted to smack him due to his complete and total lack of focus. He decided to use the band, but insisted on playing drums. Once he got started, the nerves were gone, and he impressed the judges. Personally, I don’t know if it was for dramatic effect, or for real, but the personality shifts were a bit disconcerting. OK, so I wanted to smack him, too. He CAN actually sing more than theme songs, though.

Skylar Laine was so dehydrated that she had to go to the hospital, but returned to sing still wearing her hospital wristband. Tyker told her it was one of the best performances he’s seen all day, and she reminded J-Lo of Reba McEntire. Rachelle Lamb forgot the lyrics, and had to start again. Her timing seemed a bit off, though she had a nice tone. Adam Brock informed the judges that it was “time for American Idol to have some white chocolate.” He was referring to his soulful voice, and got applause from the judges.

Now the judges had to deliberate about who went and who moved on, considering not just the voice, but the whole package. The contestants were split into 4 groups and sent in to rooms to wait.

Room 1 held Creighton Fraker, Hallie Day, Erin Hirsh, Adam Brock, Johnny Keyser, Jermaine Jones, Joshua Leder and Lauren Gray.

Room 2 held Phillip Phillips, Eben Franckewitz, Skylar Laine, Reed Grimm, Shannon Magrane and Jessica Phillips.

Room 3 held Rachelle Lamb, Jairod Gison, Jennifer Malsh, Sarah Philips and Brittany Kerr. Oh, and the room held a lot of bickering and drama.

Room 4 held Stephanie Renee, Britney Kellogg, Angie Zeiderman, Heejun Han, Richie Law and Gabi Carrubba.

Can you guess who went home? Yep! Room 3. Tears, tears, tears. On to Vegas!

The judges on The Voice need to add to their teams until they each have 12 singers, and the pace definitely picked up tonight. Each judge is looking for the elusive something special before they will hit the button that turns their chair around.

The first performer was a mystery to the viewers at home as well as to the judges, and had apparently been told in the past that their appearance was not marketable. Here would be the true test of whether voice ranked over appearance. Folk singer Sarah Golden, 27, sang You and I, and Cee Lo and Blake both turned around. Xtina said her voice was sweet, but she heard a twang better suited to another judge. Blake told her she was unique, had an honest sound, and was real and refreshing. Cee Lo said he wanted a diverse team, to which Blake replied that Cee Lo wanted her as an experiment on his team. Sarah said she wanted them both, to which Cee Lo replied, “Baby, you couldn’t handle us both.” She picked Cee Lo, because he was inappropriate, and figured he was someone she could hang with.

Elley Duke, 19, failed to impress with her rendition of Mercy. Adam told her that her final note was killer. Blake said her falsetto parts were pitchy, and Xtina said that with limited slots, they are looking to hear a certain something. Elley thanked the judges for listening, and said she was just happy to be there. That and her great attitude earned her a hug from Christina.

Pip, 19, admits that his voice and looks do not go together. The crowd started cheering as soon as he started House of the Rising Sun. Adam, Blake, Xtina and Cee Lo all turned around. Adam told him that he is what epitomizes the show, and that it takes a real man to wear a bow tie. He also said he loves turning around and seeing the exact opposite of what he expects. Blake said he could give him time and attention as a member of a team with hardly any guys. Xtina said she also has time and attention to give, and Cee Lo told him he has an old soul and did a great job. Smack talk, campaigning, Pip saying, “Low blow, low blow!” Choice: Adam, since he was the first to turn around.

Erin Willett, 22, said her father has always made sure that she has had music in her life, and has been her friend and mentor. He was also diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer. She sang I Want You Back, and Blake gloated when no one else turned around. Xtina and Adam both remarked about her powerful voice. Blake said that he loves when the crowd has fun, and told her she was on his team whether she liked it or not.

David Grace, 28, played football in college and then coached before turning to music. The crowd loved his Sweet Home Alabama, and though the judges goaded each other to push their buttons, no one did. Blake and Adam were both put off by the dips and bends he used to slide into notes.

Katrina Parker, 34, had her invitation hand-delivered by Carson. She sang One of Us, getting cheers from the crowd. Adam put his head down to listen before he hit his button, and told the other judges “I win” when they tried to give feedback. He told Katrina that he wanted something different, and that’s what he heard from the beginning. After the audition, Carson assured her that Adam is the pickiest of the 4 judges.

Geoff McBride, 51, sang Higher Ground, and got the crowd going. More debating amongst the judges before Xtina and Cee Lo turned around. Xtina told him that he had her with the very first note, and when she turned was impressed with how he worked the crowd and the stage. Geoff asked Cee Lo why he waited until the last minute, and didn’t really get an answer except for “It’s my thing, it’s Stevie Wonder, it’s soul.” He went with Xtina. She noted that this year she is also gauging the reactions of the other judges as well as the audience.

Erin Martin, 28, was a model, and when she did showcases with major labels, was told that she needed development. Blake and Cee Lo both heard her heels walking across the stage, and were both impressed with her Hey There Delilah. Blake thought her voice was cool, and her smile contagious, and told her she had a special sound that he personally had never heard before. Cee Lo called her voice strange, unique and bizarre, and said she “quite naturally belonged to (him), don’t you think?” Her reply was that it was “up for debate at this time, don’t you think?” She asked Adam why he didn’t turn around, and he said he was confused and scared. She agreed that she belonged on Team Cee Lo.

James Massone, 23, doesn’t want to go back to the family auto body shop. His Find Your Love got responses from Xtina, Blake and Cee Lo. Christina loved his soul, Blake said he sang the song perfectly and finished before becoming emotional, and Cee Lo was pleased to hear his voice quality, which was calm, smooth and clear. He asked Adam what happened with him, and Adam said that he was great and he didn’t want to deal with fighting the other 3 for him. James graciously said he didn’t want to offend anyone by not picking them, and chose Cee Lo, who had been his first choice of judge.

Winter Rae, 26, also had her invitation hand-delivered by Carson. Her blue hair and tattoos contrast with her R&B style. She sang Take A Bow, but failed to impress anyone enough to turn around. Xtina was looking for more range, and Adam told her that rejection had happened to all of them and she shouldn’t give up. Pal Perez Hilton told her she was still a star.

Chris Cauley, 27, sang Grenade, getting the attention of both Cee Lo and Adam. He told the two that he wanted to see them arm wrestle for him, and then chose Adam, who had told him he was smooth and consistent.

Snippets followed of Nathan Parrett (The Joker), who went to Adam, who said that he saw him as the underdog and could definitely pull out something special. Rocker Brian Fuente sang Paris (Ooh La La), earning him a spot with Blake, who said he was so happy that none of the others pushed their buttons. Moses Stone did Let’s Get It Started, and joined Team Xtina as The Voice‘s first ever MC. Xtina liked his energy, and said he gives The Voice a whole new meaning.

Jordis Unga, 29, finished out the evening with Maybe I’m Amazed, a song Adam loves. Blake, Xtina and Cee Lo all turned around, and Blake said that she was the type of person he’d been sitting there waiting for, and that she made him want to be a better singer himself. Xtina liked her rasp, and loved what she heard. Cee Lo simply said that he picked her. When Jordis questioned Adam, he said he was the A****** that didn’t pick her. Campaigning, smack talk, apologies to Xtina…and Team Blake picked up another singer.

Whew! 12 more picked. The judges weren’t shy with their feedback, and tonight, the contestants weren’t shy about challenging the judges. What will next week bring?
