ECS Announces Its First Ever Modmen PC Modding Competition

Taipei, Taiwan - Elitegroup Computer Systems (ECS) today announces it is teaming up with Thermaltake, G.skill and various media partners to announce its first ever worldwide Modmen PC modding competition. Starting on October 11, 2012, ECS is searching for the Modmen of the year. The Grand Prize winner will become a Taiwan millionaire (approx. US $33,333).

To register for the contest head to http://www.ecsmodmen.com/. All submissions must be sent before February 28, 2013. To be eligible for this contest all contestants need to have an ECS motherboard purchased after 9/20/2012 or have an ECS Golden Board.

There are two stages of competition. The first stage takes place online. The top 10 case modders will be determined by a combination of online votes and ECS' own modding judges. The modder with the most votes will win US $1,000. The top 5 PC modders that qualify for the second stage of the competition, besides winning cash and prizes, will be flown to Taiwan and given accommodation to compete at Computex for a chance to win the Grand Prize – approx. US$33,333. During the competition the top five contestants will showcase their mods at ECS' booth and a panel of accredited judges and the audience will determine the grand prize winner.

The sixth through tenth place modders will also win a host of prizes sponsored by Thermaltake and G.skill. See below for more prize information.

Lian Li Announces PC-7H Mid Tower Chassis

Lian-Li Industrial Co., Ltd, today announces a new brushed aluminum mid tower chassis – PC-7H. Supporting ATX and micro-ATX motherboards, the elegant PC-7H gives DIY builders a simple yet functional design with many tool-less options.

The Lian Li PC-7H can hold up to four 3.5” hard drives and one 2.5” SSD in the HDD cage in the front of the chassis. The 3.5” drives are secured into place using thumbscrews with rubber suspensions to reduce vibrations. For those looking to modify this all aluminum chassis, the HDD cage can be easily removed.

Above the HDD cage are the three 5.25” drive bays. Thanks to the tool-less design of the bays, DIY builders can easily install optical drives.

Two 140mm fans in the front of the chassis pull cool air into the chassis. The bottom 140mm fan blows air directly on the HDD cage, while the upper fan pushes air across the motherboard and expansion cards. The front panel is tool-lessly removable, making it easy to clean and maintain the air filters. The rear 120mm exhaust fan pulls hot air out of the chassis.

For those looking for more cooling options, there is space on the top panel for two 120mm fans, and more room for another 120mm fan on the side panel.

The motherboard tray features several cutouts for easy cable management, and the PC-7H accommodates CPU coolers up to 170mm (6.6”) in height. The PC-7H has 8 vented expansion slots with thumb screws. Expansion cards up to 400mm (15.7”) are supported.

Power supplies up to 250mm (9.8”) in length easily fit at the bottom of the PC-7H. Ventilation slits underneath the PSU with a removable pull-out filter help increase the life and performance of the power supply.

The I/O panel sits on the top of the chassis and features two USB 3.0 and HD audio connections. A door covers the I/O panel to keep the elegant look when not in use.

Quad-Shunt Channel – New Patented Cold Plate Design

Potential AMD Radeon Specs leaked of the 8850 and 8870

With the leak of AMD’s new GPU specs from VideoCardz.com, we have found out a little bit more information about the 8850 and 8870 graphics cards. The 8870 is set out to rival the GTX 680, and the 8850 is competing with the GTX 670. The 8870 has a whopping 3.4 billion transistors, a base clock of 1050MHz, boost clock of 1100MHz and a 25% better memory bandwidth (192GB/s) than the 7870. Both cards are based on the Oland architecture and have the same number of transistors and memory bandwidth, the only difference is the 8850 has lower clock speeds (925MHz base and 975MHz boost). Info claims we might be seeing an early 2013 release.

G-Cube provides a variety of different high quality audio devices like headphones, headsets, earphones and portable devices. We just recently reviewed one of their portable Bluetooth speakers (review link). Today we will be looking in depth at the G-POP II Dual Mode Headphones (model number IPH-120S). Some quick features; it uses two 40mm stereo speakers, one for each ear, it has a built in mic, adjustable ear pieces and can be folded up to reduce size for transportation. Lets take a closer look at packaging and accessories.

G-POP II's come in a black rectangle box with a window in the front showing off the product inside. There is various label information on the front back and sides of the box, explaining a little about the product. In the box you will receive the G-POP II headphones, instruction manual, an extension cable and a microfiber carrying bag.

A Closer Look

The specific G-POP II version we are reviewing has a white and gray color scheme with chrome trimming around the ear pieces. There are also logos on both ears as well as a G-Cube logo on the rubberized headband. Each ear piece has its own 40mm speaker covered up with soft cushion ear pads. The G-POP II's uses a dual sided cable design meaning cables will be coming out of both sides of the headphones similar to earphones, most headphones only use a single cord running to either side of the ear piece. The left side cord has a mic and button attached to it, this is used for answering phone calls right from the headphones without having to take out your phone to answer the incoming call.

The G-POP II headphones feel well built, they do however feel more like plastic than anything. Sound quality wise, they are great, nice rich, base delivering sound you would expect from a $80+ set of headphones. The G-POP II's feel good on your head not heavy and not squeezing the life out of your brain. We wore them for over an hour straight and they still felt fine. Some headphones might hurt your ears after a while but no discomfort was present. One thing we have to point out is the fact that these headphones don't go completely over your ears, they just rest on top of them. Another thing we notice is they cancel out outside noises to allow you to enjoy what you're listening to.

The rubberized headband is a great design because it grips onto your head whether you're wearing a hat or nothing at all. We would have liked to see the same material used for the ear pieces on the headband though, because the rubber headband may hurt your head after long periods of use, which it did for us. The G-POP II's housing is made out of a durable sheet metal do avoid deformation while traveling.

The ability to fold these headphones up into a semi circle is a great feature, it allows them to be easily transported in the provided carrying bag.

The cable length is ideal for travel, but may be too short for home use. It does come with an extension cable but it only adds another 30cm to the total 120cm available. The G-POP II uses a 3.5 mm jack and also comes with a mic box with an answering button.

Testing

The dual 40mm speakers deliver crisp clean sound and booming bass. The sound quality of these headphones are great, we listened to several different genres of music to get a feel how different songs sounded. We didn't notice any shallow or flat noises, there was however some static playback but that was most likely associated with the song itself.

To test the mic all we did is plug it in and called a friends phone, we then had a minute conversation to make sure everything sounded good. From what was observed, the sound displayed through the phone we called was clear and crisp. We also plugged the headphones into the computer to test the mic on steam with the available cable extender that allows mic functionality on the PC. For some reason we couldn't get the mic to work that well, we had to put our mouth directly over the mic for anything to be heard on the other side, and what was displayed wasn't that great either. Turns out the mic only works well with mobile phones instead of PC use. We also noticed a bit of static coming through the headphones when no music was played on the PC.

Conclusion

These headphones are great but with an $80 price tag they can be a little expensive for most people. The G-POP II is more for the music enthusiast looking for great portable headphones that deliver heavy bass and crisp clean sound. With the ability to work with most mobile devices like MP3's and phones its a great way to listen to your favorite songs.

Das Keyboard is based out of Austin, Texas. They are known for their premium keyboards which have a distinctive feature, the absence of key labels to help users improve touch typing skills while also eliminating the need to rearrange certain keys to compensate for the various keyboard layouts. Today we will be looking at the Professional Model S with the tactile click and media control features and apart from their distinctive models this keyboard does in fact have labels. Let’s take a closer look at packaging and accessories.

The Das Professional S comes in a keyboard shaped box with various illustrations on the front and back. The first thing you notice when you first open the box is the included microfiber cloth. This is going to be the most important thing you get with your keyboard. Why is that you ask? Because of the fact that the Das Professional S uses a gloss black finish that is prone to finger prints and dirt. Although its gloss black and is a fingerprint magnet we didn’t really have a problem, I mean sure there were finger prints here and there but it wasn’t like we had to clean it every five seconds. Other accessories include instruction guide and PS2 adapter that provide N-key rollover.

First glance at the Das Professional Model S blew us away; this keyboard is a work of art and is truly eye appealing, from the glossy black finish to the key labels that is “Darth Vader approved”. The Professional S and all of the other Das keyboards other than the ultimate feature laser etched keys with a unique font which adds a great overall look to the keyboard. We would love to see a back lit version in the future.

The Professional S feature a Enhances 104 key layout that also includes two windows key buttons and an fn (function) key to use the media control keys.

The Professional Model S uses German-Engineered mechanical Cherry MX blue key switches with gold contacts that provide a tactile and audible click. The tactile click does present a bit of resistance when typing but nothing compared to that of dome switch keyboards. The audible click is a great feature but it could be loud at times especially at night when family members or roommates are trying to go to sleep.

Key remover not included.

The feeling when you type on the Professional S is phenomenal. The flow and ease of pressing a key will definitely help the overall speed and performance of your typing. Nothing compares to typing with a mechanical keyboard.

This specific model S features media controls like volume up, volume down, mute play, pause, stop forward, backward. There is also a key that allows you to instantly put your computer to sleep.

The high speed USB 2.0 hub located on the right side of the keyboard allows you to connect (charge) an external USB device like an iPhone, iPod or any other USB compliant device. The location of the two USB ports is good because it’s easy to see and plugs in any device.

The Professional S features a 6.6ft cable that split into two at the end, one for the keyboard itself and the other is for the USB 2.0 HUB. Unfortunately the cable is not braided but it is thick enough to ensure reliability.

Something included in the packaging is PS2 adapter that plugs into motherboards that feature a PS2 port, not many come stock nowadays but people still have them out their somewhere. The PS2 adapter allows for n-key rollover which comes on most high end keyboards. It allows each key to be scanned independently by the keyboards hardware to ensure that each key is pressed correctly regardless of how many other keys are being pressed. The Professional S also features 6-key rollover with the USB connection. This pretty much works similar to the n-key however only up to 6 keys will be able to be pressed at one time. These features are great for both typists and gaming enthusiasts. The Professional Model S is also KVM switch compatible. This allows you to control more than one computer with a single keyboard.

We played a bunch of different kinds of games with the Professional S. With the resistance associated with the tactile clicking feature response times may be lowered while in control of your character. When it comes to gaming nothing beats Cherry MX red switches, they provide little to no resistance while pressing down on a selected key. Although this is true we still enjoyed playing various types of games while using the Professional Model S.

This is a phenomenal product and we cannot say that enough. We loved everything about this keyboard. Its gloss finish mechanical keys, unique laser etched keys, its typing performance and various media controls. What's not to like. If you have 130 bucks lying around, I would definitely pick one of these bad boys up.

GELID Solutions Rev. 2 Icy Vision VGA Cooler Review

Not too long ago we did a review on a CPU cooler from GELID Solutions (GELID Solutions GX7). Today we will be looking at another cooler from them, but this time it won’t be for the CPU. The Rev. 2 Icy Vision is a VGA cooler for a variety of different cards from both NVIDIA and AMD. The Rev. 2 Icy Vision aims to take over the other aftermarket cooling options with its unique design and cooling capabilities.

This cooler looks like it will be a major upgrade from the stock coolers, but how much better will it perform and is it worth the cash, we will soon find out.

Various illustrations and specifications cover the box, letting you know what you are going to expect. Accessories include the Rev. 2 Icy Vision, instruction manual, various heatsinks and thermal tapes, a mounting plate, installation screws, GC-2 thermal paste, a 3 pin to Molex, and a GELID Solutions sticker.

The Rev. 2 Icy Vision uses 5 power heatpipes that are in a unique design layout. The heatpipes are then interlaced into the abundance of aluminum fins, 85 to be exact. The place of contact between the cooler and GPU is a smooth copper base finish. To finish it off, there are two 92mm ball bearing fans that use 11 S-shaped blades, this supposedly generates an additional 20% more airflow than a traditional blade fan, and both fans are UV reactive to give them a nice after affect.

One of the downsides to the Rev. 2 is the fact that the cooler only runs at 100% fan speed. This is a major let down because having this thing in your case blaring nonstop will drive you nuts. There is an alternative however; you are able to use an external fan controller with the provided extension cable. There might also be a way to control the fan speed through the OS using a third party fan controlling software. Our method of controlling the fan speed was to just let our test cases fan controller do all the work.

Installation and Testing

To test the Rev. 2 Icy Vision we installed it onto our EVGA GTX 570 SuperClocked and run some tests. Traditionally stock graphics card coolers do not do the best job at keeping your graphics card cool, sure they do their job well enough so your GPU doesn’t over heat but when it comes to overclocking that is most likely out of the question with some stock coolers.

The included mini heatsinks and thermal tapes are used to keep your RAM chips and VRM cool alongside your GPU. We went ahead and stuck them on there for good measure.

The included instructions are long and hard to follow and the installation process is a long and tedious task, especially for those who have never installed an after market cooler before.

The Rev. 2 Icy Vision doesn’t look bad at all, it exposes the PCB quite a bit, the open space between the cooler and the PCB allow for great airflow to help cool the heatsinks associated with the RAM and VRM.

The Rev. 2 Icy Vision will take up three spaces when installed in your case, so if you only have two PCIe lanes that are placed really close together odds are you won’t be able to run a dual card configuration with the Rev installed. This is our problem with the ASUS Maximus V Gene, it’s a MicroATX so the PCIe lanes are one space apart from each other making it hard to run SLI or CrossfireX configurations.

Quite a bit of weight causes the cooler to droop, There is not much support holding the cooler up other than the cooper base plate and 5 heatpipes, this allows for better airflow in the mid section like mentioned previously.

Test Results

The performance margin between the stock cooler and the Rev. 2 Icy Vision is phenomenal with the GTX 570 both in both stock and overclocked settings. The Rev. 2 Icy Vision gives you a tremendous amount of headroom needed for overclocking and in this case we had plenty of it. Believe or not we achieved these overclocked temps with the fan set to about 35-40% fan speed and it was still able to keep temperatures under 70C. These low temperatures will keep your GPU running great for a long time, so trust me, its worth the extra money to buy an after market CPU cooler. So many company's create their own aftermarket coolers for reference cards for this very reason to allow overclocking headroom and to preserve your GPUs life span.

We absolutely loved the cooling performance the Rev. 2 Icy Vision displayed and would recommend it to anyone that is currently struggling with unstable GPU temperatures. Go out and do yourself a favor and purchase an aftermarket VGA cooler like the Rev. 2 Icy Vision, you wont be disappointing.

RAIDMAX Orion Mid-Tower ATX Case Review

RAIDMAX is a manufacturer of several different computer cases and power supplies, each have their own Sci-Fi inspired look and demeanor. Almost all of their cases involve blue or red lights and an aggressive looking front bezel, the RAIDMAX products are not for the faint of heart. Today we will be looking at one product in particular, the RAIDMAX Orion. The RAIDMAX Orion is a mid-tower case that features a blue and black plastic and steel construction. The Orion was designed with airflow in mind, providing a mesh front panel. The Orion delivers great airflow while keeping the air inside the case clean.

The RAIDMAX Orion has support for up to six fans, two 120mm on the top portion of the case, two 120mm in the front, one 120mm in the rear and the option to put either a 120mm or a 180mm fan on the side panel. The RAIDMAX Orion supports full ATX form factors and Micro ATX form factors. There are an abundance of storage racks to install both 3.5” and 2.5” hard drives. You can even install up to two more 2.5 inch drives with the bottom mounted rack. The Orion includes both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 on the front panel along with the installation of up to three 5.25 inch devices.

Packaging and Accessories

The RAIDMAX Orion comes in a large box labeled with various illustrations explaining a little bit about the case. The case is housed in semi soft foam to avoid damage caused by misuse during shipment, it is also wrapped up in a cloth like fabric with a big RAIDMAX logo on it which also does its part in protecting the case during the shipping process.

Accessories include user’s manual, installation screws, Velcro straps and zip ties, a motherboard speaker and hooks for hanging lights or whatever it may be that you need to use them for.

Front

The front panel is made of plastic construction; you can install up to three 5.25 inch devices, which the case uses a tool less design. The jagged lines of the front bezel give the case a hardcore looks, almost futuristic looking, to top it off there is a pre-installed 120mm blue LED fan to add to the blue accents of the case. Dust filter are preinstalled on the front portion where the fan is and on the actual bay covers themselves, this helps stop a majority of the dust that accumulates in a PC case over time. If you want to install additional 5.25 inch devices you have to break off the metal plates blocking the bays, the first slot is already open.

The rear of the case is pretty standard, except for the blue PCIe brackets that also add to the blue details of the case. One thing we noticed also is the fact that they provide 3 external grommet holes for running liquid cooling tubes to the inside of the case. Usually, those that are running liquid cooling setups have everything installed inside their case, but since the size of the Orion has limited space when it comes to an internal cooling setup we like that they still added the extra holes. The Power supply is mounted on the bottom of the case to provide better airflow and easy installation. As shown in the picture you can have either a 120mm or a 92mm fan as an intake (1x 120mm fan already preinstalled).

The front/top panel I/O consists of two USB 2.0 ports, a single USB 3.0 port, a 3.5 microphone and headphone jack, power switch, reset switch, fan controller capable of controlling up to three fans and a LED light adjuster. We would have liked to have seen the option to control more than just three fans since the max you can install is five, we did however love the ability to adjust the LED illumination on the front 120mm LED fan.

The top portion of the Orion is plastic and has a mesh opening that allows air to be drawn inside or exhausted out of the top, with the ability to install up to two 120mm fans, you should have no trouble keeping the inside of your computer cool. The top portion also has a carrying handle to allow for easier transportation.

The bottom of the case is slightly raised with the help of the four elevated feet with rubber pads to reduce vibration and movement. The RAIDMAX Orion also comes with a PSU dust filter, which is a great addition if you install your power supply with the fan facing down drawing air from underneath the case.

First we will talk about side panel construction, which is an important detail when choosing a case. Surprisingly for how light the side panels are the construction of them is very good, they feel sturdy and hardly have any flex. The side panels also come with handles to help you remove them. Even though the overall case construction is good, the case material felt a little cheap for the price.

We are going to start with the back side first. There are various tie down spots to keep your cables nice and clean. A huge motherboard cutout allows the installation of an aftermarket CPU cooler to be installed without the removal of the motherboard; almost all of the ATX cases on the market have this feature. Another great addition is the cut out for the 4+4-pin CPU power cable, great for cable management.

Front panel cables include a 20 pin USB 3.0 connector, a USB 2.0 connector, HD audio, power switch, reset switch, HDD led and power LED.

The spacing between the motherboard tray is minimal, basically none at all, everything depends on your cable routing skill and the elevated portion of the side panel, which is only elevated in various locations.

Now on to the main part of the case. When you open up the side panel for the first time the first thing that catches your eye is the bright blue motherboard tray, most cases on the market only have black or silver motherboard trays, we really like this little touch RAIDMAX included with the Orion. The blue base of the motherboard tray will go great with a blue themed build, or any build for that matter.

With the included five 2.5/3.5 inch bays for hard drives and SSD’s, you should surely have enough space to store all of your drives, RAIDMAX even included another mounting place for installation of up to two more SSD’s.

Another feature which is great for allowing the installation of monster graphics card is the ability to remove the upper drive bay portion completely. This allows you to install a graphics card that may exceed the amount of space given.

The several holes for running cables all have rubber grommets on them to help preserve the clean look you are going for. Sadly the opening at the bottom next to the PSU is not.

Installation was easy; the motherboard standoffs were already installed for us in the standard ATX position. Since we installed a Micro ATX motherboard we just had to move a few of the standoffs and we were good to go. Just mount the power supply, run the cables, pop in the I/O shield, bolt down the motherboard, plug in all the connections, and done. Cable management is a lot easier with the tie down points and the included Velcro straps. We were able to fit our Antec Kuhler 620 in a dual fan configuration with no problem. As for dual radiators you might not be able to install in on the top portion of the case due to the limited space. Our GTX 570 fits perfectly so we didnt have to remove the hard drive bay at all. You could still remove it anyway if you want to provide better airflow to the center of the case.

We were able to run all the cables neatly, but we had to be careful where we placed them because when it comes time to put the side cover on, it may not fit because one of the cables is sticking out too far. We had a little trouble getting the CPU power cord to lay flat, but it was nothing we couldn't easily fix. As for the SATA cables, we had to shove them into the drive bay area because there was no room to lay them flat along the bottom of the case. The cut out near the PSU is big enough to shove much of the cables through, but we thought it was too big and couldn't really hide some of the cables.

In the past we have had trouble installing HDD into tool less designed sleds, the sleds that the ORION uses unfortunately, are not tool less, but they are extremely easy to install, just slide in your hard drive in and screw it down with the provided screws.

From its blue motherboard tray to the onboard fan speed controller, the RAIDMAX Orion provides tons of great features you would expect to get from a $99+ computer case. Their case has a little more plastic components than we would like to see, although to get the look RAIDMAX was going for they would need to make the front and top bezels out of plastic. They did do a good job matching the colors of the plastic and steel. The mesh ventilation system is great and will keep your system running cool for years to come. So if you're looking for a great ATX case that is under $100, then maybe this futuristic looking RAIDMAX Orion case is for you.

Three 140mm fans blow cool air directly across the hard drive bay, and a 120mm fan at the rear of the chassis pulls the hot air out. The PC-A75X and PC-A76X both have the capabilities for two 120mm fans on the top and the side of the chassis for DIY builders looking for even more cooling options. Water cooling is also supported with two rubber grommets in the rear.

These two new full tower Lian Li cases both have eleven expansion slots and can hold expansion cards up to 360mm (14.1”) in length. An arm helps to stabilize and secure longer, heavier expansion cards.

CPU coolers up to 170mm high are supported, and the motherboard tray has a large CPU cutout so to support CPU cooler backplates. Additionally, several rubber grommets on the tray allow for simplified cable management.

Power supplies up to 360mm (14.1”) in length can be placed in the bottom compartment. Ventilation slits underneath the PSU with a removable pull-out filter help increase the life and performance of the power supply.

There are two USB 3.0, two USB 2.0 and HD audio ports on the I/O panel located on the top of the chassis so not to take away from the sleek styles.

The PC-A75X and PC-A76X both come in black, inside and out, for the suggested retail price of US$199 and US$219, respectively (tax not included).
