Fast forward to today, I now have in possession a Canon MP990 multi-function printer. Problem is, the genuine ink is very expensive. Around $20 for a cartridge. Eliminating genuine Canon ink and cheap generic ink,only one choice remains:  The Rihac CISS (Continuous Ink Supply System). If you had read the article Should you buy cheap ink?, you would know that the CISS ink is cheaper than Genuine canon ink by a considerable amount, however, the quality is comparable to if not better than Canon’s offering.

So, i took the plunge and bought the CISS for the Canon MP990 and am happy to say, it works exceedingly well and produces excellent quality prints. Needs a bit of DIY to get it up and running but everything is explained in the manual with pictures.  Hence, I’m not going to show you in this post how to setup, but rather what the system looks like.

The system consists of a reservoir with 6 ink colours (Black, Grey, Black, Cyan ,Magenta, Yellow) exited by silicon tubes which are attached internally in the printer via double-sided tape mounts which lead to the cartridges. Notice too that the cover is not shut 100%, this is because the tubing would otherwise be crushed.

To test the system out, I lashed out and printed a full size photograph on a piece of A4 photo matte paper (would not have done this with Genuine Canon ink!). Because I’m not a professional, this print was conducted in plain vanilla style with no calibrations to either the PC, printer or camera for that matter, but I can tell you it looks great in person.

In all, I’m very happy with the setup and would happily recommended it to anyone who does a lot of printing, or even the casual user because you won’t have to buy ink for a long time. Each tank holds 100ml of ink, a colour cartridge holds  8ml, 100/8 is 12.5 cartridges per a tank. Multiply that by 6 = 75 cartridges! Work out how much that would cost to buy from Canon .

If you’re interested in a CISS system, head to RIHAC to check out their range because it’s not just limited to Canon, but also Epson, HP and Brother. They are also very quick in shipping; they upgraded my shipping to express for nothing which was a pleasant surprise. I hope to enjoy many more expensive brilliant prints from my CISS equipped Canon Mp990.

It has been approximately a year since the Iphone 3GS was released and I am proud to say that the new Iphone 4 has a feature list to out do its predecessor. While this isn’t the first time the Iphone 4 has been revealed, since it was leaked on Gizmodo earlier this year, but we now have a comprehensive list of what this little gem can do. The question being “Should I upgrade from my Iphone 3GS?”. Here’s the break down:

• Design – Apple have gone with a much more aggressive look with the shell more of a rectangle sharp edge shape. It certainly looks appealing, not only is the outer silver metal look good, but it actually acts as an antenna to improve phone and wifi reception. It’s also 34% thinner than the iPhone 3GS; I used to think the 3GS was slim!
• Hardware – The Iphone 4 also contains an Apple A4 chip inside, same as the iPad. Not only is it quicker, but it also chews through less power. The battery is slighty bigger (16%) and Apple claims 40% more talk time! Here are some stats:
• • Talk over 3G: 7 hours.
  • Browsing over 3G: 6 hours.
  • Browsing over Wi-Fi: 10 hours.
  • Video: 10 hours.
  • Music: 40 hours.
  • Stand-by: 300 hours.
• Display -  Apple has incorporated a 3.5 touchscreen which boasts a resolution of 960?×?640 pixels. For the non technical users, this mean a very high detailed screen, perhaps more than what can the eye can see at that see. Apple has called it the “Retina Display”.
• Camera – Everyone knows the 3GS camera was fairly average, but the Iphone 4 has something much better to offer. It has a bigger sensor for the main camera, bigger lense and a LED flash. Whilst no DSLR, its a remarkable improvement. A video conference camera can be found on the front of the Iphone 4, therefore giving the user the ability to make video calls.
• Software – iOS4 is the new software loaded on the Iphone, the kicker here being that is supports multitasking! The software has been fine-tuned for the Retina Display so everything will look sharp.

And the price? In America, the Iphone 4 will cost $199 and $299 for 16 and 32GB locked in a contract with AT&T. Without contract, the iPhone 4 is $599 and $699. International pricing is still to be announced.

So, should you upgrade? The new feature list is certainly appealing, but in my opinion, if you already own a 3GS, I wouldn’t bite just yet. If you own the the older 3g model, I’d say yes upgrade, it’s a huge step up since its first release.
