Motorola Droid X full Review

The Motorola Droid X for Verizon is the latest in the Droid series and definitely the best yet. It has a 4.3″ screen that’s the largest available now and even if they get larger you probably can’t get anything bigger in your pocket. It’s resolution is 854 x 480, so even though it shares the same screen size as the Evo 4G the Droid X has a slightly larger screen. The perfect 16:9 ration also makes for great movie viewing in HD. Here’s a quick list of the hardware specs:

As you can see this thing is a beast, and the 1GHz OMAP3630 processor is blazingly fast. Playing games, running apps and surfing the web on this thing is faster than anything before it, and is very enjoyable on the large screen. The screen is the same standard LCD as the original Droid, but with more pixels of course and remains one of the best and brightest available.

On the sides of the X you have the volume up/down rocker, microUSB, micro HDMI and bright red camera button.

If you thought the screen on the Evo 4G was big, you haven’t seen anything yet. Here’s a shot of the two:

It’s actually hard to hold this thing in one hand and touch the whole screen with your thumb. If you have small hands, or are a girl, you probably don’t want the Droid X. If you have large hands and want the fastest phone ever made with the largest screen, then you have to get the Droid X.
Gaming is excellent on the X with the 3-axis accelerometers and large screen. It comes preloaded wiht a Need for Speed trial but you can get many more from the Android Market built in.

The X runs Android 2.1 with a Motoblur skin that has social networking integrated into it as well. Once you sign into your facebook account it integrates your friends into your contact list including profile pic and numbers. This is pretty useful but can also be disabled if you want a nice clean contact list of only numbers that you actually need.
Android 2.1 includes 7 home screens that can be customized with widgets or apps, and the 2.2 update will add more functionality including full support for flash 10.1 which will be nice. In combination with the HDMI out this should allow for fullscreen streaming from HULU and the like.
One disappointing thing is the included Blockbuster app. It allows you to download movies to the phone (only over wifi) and then doesn’t let you watch them on a larger tv through the HDMI out. It’s basically a waste of space. The other included apps are nice though, such as Google maps with turn by turn navigation and the likes. The turn-by-turn also works very well and my GPS got a lock in less than 30 seconds every time. It works great with the optional car dock, which I’ll have a review up for also.
Call quality was great and I still haven’t lost 3G coverage (though I haven’t travelled with it very far). The great sound quality is due to the 3 microphones on the phone, one on the front and 2 on the back to aid in noise cancellation as well as directional audio when filming video.
The 8MP camera is great and the dual LED flash is very bright, almost comparable to a standard flash when less than 10 feet. After a picture is taken there is a built-in mini photoshop program that allows you to edit the photo’s contrast, color saturation, etc and add effects like black and white or color filters. The camera uses a manual shutter (one of the only that does) which allows for very fast picture taking and great quality.

As you can see the image is very sharp and I would say it’s one of the best smartphone cameras that I’ve used.

The software keyboard is massive and features multitouch which allows for very fast typing, but if you want the fastest way to type you’ll want to use Swype which is also included. Here’s a little video of typing with swype:

After you’ve used it for a couple of days you’ll never go back to normal typing. There’s also a microphone key on the keyboard which lets you just speak the words to input, a great feature to use while driving.
A 16GB microSD card is preinstalled in the phone when you get it, but can be upgraded to 32Gb. Internal storage is 8GB.

The battery life for the DroidX is what you would expect for something with a 4.3″ screen and 1GHz processor, not great. With heavy use you won’t see much over 4.5 hours, but with light use you’ll make it a full day with no problem.
Basically the DroidX is the biggest, fastest and best phone you can get (in my opinion). A smaller phone might suit your needs better, such as the Droid Incredible, but for me the X is the only way to go. It’s available exclusively from Verizon for $199 with a 2 year agreement.

Apple iPhone 4

The new 4th generation iPhone from Apple is another breakthrough in mobile technology. It features the same A4 processor as the iPad, and with the improved power management can handle up to 10 hours of Wi-Fi browsing, 7 hours 3G talk time, 40 hours of music playing, or 300 hours standby time. The design has been updated as well to a more industrial look, while also making it thinner and smaller than the current model.

Apple has also included 802.11n wifi, assisted GPS, bluetooth, 32GB flash storage, accelerometer, compass, gyroscope, and the list goes on. As Jobs mentioned in his announcement the six-axis gyroscope should be useful for game developers to use in ushering in new types of mobile games for the iPhone.

A much needed improvement is the camera, which has been upgraded to 5MP with an LED flash that can also be used as a flashlight while filming videos. While 5MP isn’t as much resolution as the new HTC phones have, it also includes a backside-illumination sensor which results in much better photos, especially in low-light conditions.

The camera is also capable of recording HD 720p video at 30 frames per second and comes with built in movie editing software for editing and uploading directly to the internet, though most users will probably want to buy the $4.99 iMovie app which features much more robust editing features than the built-in software.

Probably the biggest development in the new iPhone is the “retina display”, so called because the pixels are so small that you’re eye can’t see them from more than a couple of inches away. The pixel density is 326 pixels per inch, and on a 3.5 inch display results in 960 x 640 resolution and more than 4 times the pixel density of the 3GS. Here is an example of the old 3GS display and the iPhone 4G zoomed in:

Wow, now that’s resolution. Apple now holds the record for the most pixels per inch on a mobile display but even so it’s still a close call between the new iPhone screen and an AMOLED screen, such as on the Samsung Galaxy S.

Of course with the new iPhone comes a new OS, now called simply iOS 4 (”phone” was dropped because it’s also used on the iPad). The new update allows several new features including a form of multitasking, folders, and sever hundred other small updates.

videoVideo calling is supported on the new iPhone with an app called FaceTime, and it works very well. The only snag is that it currently only works on WiFi networks due to bandwidth constraints, and only between 2 people with the new iPhone. Jobs says that he’s working with mobile operators to make FaceTime available over 3G networks soon, which will actually make it a useful app instead of a novelty.

The new iPhone is currently available for $199 from AT&T with a 2 year agreement and current owners of iPhones can upgrade even if they’re current 2 year upgrade time limit hasn’t run up.

*update* In the first 3 days of availability Apple has sold 1.7 million of the new iPhones and set a world record, I guess the people have spoken.

Motorola Atrix 4G smartphone

The new Motorola Atrix 4G smartphone features dual core Tegra 2 processors running at 1GHz, and is billed as the world’s fastest smartphone. It also comes with 1GB of RAM, and has a 960 x 540 HD 4″ screen.

You can watch movies on a full size tv with the HDMI out cable, and HD is no problem at all for the Tegra 2 graphics processor. The phone will run Android (2.3?) and have a monstrous 1930mAh hour battery that should keep the phone powered for well over a day with heavy use.
Another interesting feature is that the phone comes preloaded with something called Citrix Receiver. This allows the phone to function as a complete desktop replacement when paired with a bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Here’s a video from Citrix of the setup running.

Options to Fit Your Calling Needs

Pay as you go cell phone services started in Europe a number of years ago and providers were slow to introduce them to the U.S. market.
Virgin Mobile and Cricket are two of the better know providers which offer only pay as you go while some of the other major companies also offer this along with their regular service. There other providers as well.
With the services mentioned above you have to buy a phone and register with the vendor.
You can then either use a credit card to buy time on line or register a credit card (at least you can with Virgin Mobile) and purchase (or top up as they say) additional minutes using your cell phone. You can also purchase the provider's pre-paid phone cards from many retail outlets and load them into your phone using the keys on your phone.

My Experience With Pay as You Go Cell Phone Service

All of these services require you to add time at periodic intervals (or lose the service and remaining minutes) as well as allowing you to add additional minutes as needed. Under the plan I had with Alltel a number of years ago, the minutes were only good for a month and automatically expired regardless of whether you added additional time or not. With Virgin Mobile all unused minutes remain active so long as you add at least $10 worth of minutes every 90 days.
I have used Virgin Mobile for the past four years and only gave it up a few weeks ago when I decided that, due to my increasing use of my cell phone, it no longer made economic sense. Under the plan I had, I paid twenty-five cents a minute (or fraction thereof) for every call I made or received. Text messaging, which I never used, cost ten cents per message. They had a couple of other plans which were less expensive per minute but required more frequent or larger top-ups.
Rather than paying to continually build up my bank of minutes which I knew I wouldn't be using, I felt it was cheaper to simply pay twenty-five cents per minute. Besides, I enjoyed the look on people's faces when the discussion turned to cell phone plans and they debated which double or triple digit cost plan was best and I chimed in with a comment about how my bill averaged $6 (it later grew to $10) per month. Obviously my calls were few and short and my number treated like a state secret with only my boss (my employer requires that I carry a cell phone so that I can be reached when out of the office on business), my wife and my children having access to the number.
I was very happy with the service. The last time I checked, Virgin Mobile used Sprint's network (they basically brought time on the network and resold it to their customers) so I rarely had a problem making or receiving calls at home or anywhere I traveled in the U.S. (it didn't work in some remote areas, when hiking in the mountains or when I traveled more than a few miles south of the border into Mexico, but such incidents were rare and it was even rarer that I had a need for a cell phone at those times). There were no roaming or long distance charges so the cost of a call was the same no matter where I was in the U.S. The service will not work outside the U.S. as I learned when my daughter, who also had Virgin Mobile service, took a trip to Europe and was unable to use her phone there.

Problems were Minor

As I said previously, this type of service is great if you are not a heavy cell phone user. I did have the service for my wife to use in emergencies (she never used it otherwise) and ended up just watching minutes build up on her phone. A couple of times I carried hers and my phone and used hers just to use up some of the minutes we had paid for. Unfortunately, about a year ago, I neglected to note on my calendar the next date I had to add minutes. As a result her service was canceled and I lost about $60 worth of accumulated minutes. When I switched services a few weeks ago, I took a new number rather than moving the Virgin Mobile number to my new phone and have kept my old account and phone for my wife to use. Since losing the minutes the last time I have learned that, while long distance calls are limited to the U.S., calls to the 1-800 numbers that accompany the phone cards you can buy to make inexpensive overseas calls count as domestic, not international, calls as the international portion is through the service offering the card. While it makes no sense to use the phone for regular domestic long distance since we can make those free with the VOIP service on our regular phone, she can now burn off the minutes when they build up by using cell phone to call the long distance phone card service we use to call her parents in Europe. I know we will be paying twenty-five cents a minute for what should be a free 800 call but, hey, at least we will have the satisfaction of being able to use the minutes.
The only other problem I encountered was when my daughter also switched to the new plan I had signed up with and tried to keep her Virgin Mobile number. It took about a month to complete that process during which she could make calls on the new service but all incoming calls ended up going to the old Virgin Mobile account where the callers were informed they had reached an inactive number (of course, we had canceled it).

Disposable Phones

Although I am only familiar with these services through reading Nelson DeMille novels and watching the Jason Bourne movie series (Bourne Identity, Bourne Conspiracy, Bourne Ultimatum), there is another option and that is the so called disposable cell phones.
These phones come preloaded with minutes. I assume you can reload them using phone cards that can be purchased at many retail outlets. The minutes are probably relatively expensive and I suspect that the two main advantages are convenience and privacy. If you have a temporary need for a cell phone - yours is being repaired, you are traveling and forgot to bring your phone, etc. a pre-paid phone can be a solution. Also, since there is no registration required and since it can probably be reloaded with minutes from a phone card purchased at a convenience or other store with cash, there is no link connecting you with that phone number. For most people this is not necessary but if you are on the run, like Matt Damon's character in the Jason Bourne movie series, it can provide you with telephone service while keeping Big Brother at bay.

Overcoming the Nokia E72 smartphone's shortcomings

Buying the Nokia E72 was not my first choice: I rely heavily on Gmail, Google Calendar en Google Apps, so I initially opted for a Google Android smartphone. It turned out to be a dissapointment, so based on the various glowing reviews, I decided to swap it for the E72.
The E72 is certainly not a perfect smartphone. For all its marvels, Nokia seems to have gone out of its way to make sure that many of them are just plain hard to find, hard to use or somewhat buggy/incomplete. This article documents my efforts to overcome the latter issues.
May 2010 update: Nokia has been steadily releasing new firmware for the Nokia E72, adressing not just bugs, but also adressing shortcomings by adding new features. The latest firmware for example adressed common bugs (that I fortunately did not experience myself), added SmartConnect for free (previously a paid third-party app) to overcome Symbian's access point limitation and added streaming internet radio capability to the build-in radio application.

A more reliable e-mail client

When you purchase your E72, a lifetime subscription to the Nokia Messaging service is included for free. Unfortunately, this is not all that it is cracked up to be. Your results may very, but in my experiences Nokia Messaging proved to be unreliable at best. It would frequently be unable to login for no apparent reason, would not always notify me in time or at all of new e-mail and at some point it simply stopped working completely. It can only use one specific access point for internet access. Additionally, the service requires you to hand over your username and password (which are stored on Nokia's servers), which does not sit well with me.
After several days of tinkering I decided to ditch Nokia Messaging and look for a better alternative. I believe I found it in Lonely Cat's ProfiMail.
The bad news first: unfortunately, the application does not integrate with your E72's home screen. Instead, it shows a small notification in the upper-right corner of the screen with the number of new e-mails for all your accounts combined. It will also blink the optical navi light when you receive a new e-mail. Furthermore, the application does not adhere to the look-and-feel of regular Symbian S60 apps. Although its interface is very practical, it is not the best looking...
Other than that, ProfiMail is a joy to use. It instantly notifies me of new e-mail through IMAP IDLE (push email), supports multiple accounts, HTML e-mail, images & attachments, can use your defined destinations instead of specific access points and keeps IMAP accounts fully synced: giving you access to every single message in every folder with support for syncing sent e-mails as well.
Please note, to preserve battery life, you may want to experiment with fewer mail checks and/or turning IMAP IDLE off. All my mailboxes support IMAP IDLE (push mail), therefore I do not need manual mail checks. This reduces the battery drain quite a bit.

Syncing appointments with Google Calendar

I use Google Calendar on my to keep track of my appointments. The built-in calendar on the Nokia E72 is very good, but it does not natively support syncing with Google Calendar. You need a third-party service to add this functionality
Most third-party syncing apps do not currently work on the Nokia E72 or have limited functionality. For example, they may not support multiple calendars. GooSync came highly recommended, but I could not get it set up properly (either it does not work on the E72 or I could not 'guess' the correct settings, as none are provided).
I have tested quite a few of them, the one that works as I expected for me is GoogaSync. It neatly keeps my appointments in sync with an hourly sync and works with multiple calendars, including subscribed ones. I also like the fact that it charges a reasonable one time fee only instead of monthly/yearly subscription. Unfortunately, the sync app does not utilize the E72 destinations, you are limited to chosing one specific access point for its connection.

An improved internet browsing experience

Nokia's built-in internet browser is based on the excellent WebKit engine, which is also used by Google Chrome and Apple Safari. It will render websites properly, but... the application is marred by a very clumbsy user interface that simply will not grow on me.
My favourite alternative web browser is Opera Mobile. Opera Mobile's look-and-feel resembles its desktop counterpart, yet is very much optimized for use on the E72. It also retains some of its features, like the speed dial (a visual representation of your 9 preferred websites) and tabbed browsing. The app is very snappy, loads websites quickly and renders them perfectly. Although you could argue that the Nokia E72 is simply not suited for web browsing, given that most websites are 3x as wide as its screen, Opera's auto-zoom functionality works very well to overcome this limitation.
Opera Mobile does not support Adobe Flash. Additionally, Symbian S60 does not allow you to change the default browser into Opera Mobile.

Adding GPS location tagging support

One of the selling points of the Nokia E72 for me was its good 5MP camera, perfect for those moments when you would like to take a shot but forgot to bring your state-of-the-art camera. Although not a major issue, I would have liked the built-in camera app to support geo-tagging, a feature that is becoming quite common on smartphones these days.
Luckily, Nokia provides the experimental Location Tagger, which adds this functionality for free. Once launched, it integrates into the camera app and automatically adds GPS information to pictures taken with the E72.

Conclusion

The Nokia E72 looks very slick from the outside, whereas the Symbian platform it runs looks a bit dated by today's standards and its competition. At first it was a bit buggy too, but Nokia resolved this with several firmware upgrades.Today it is my trusty companion that is with me 24 hours a day. As much as I like iPhones, I wouldn't swap my E72 for one and I am definitely convinced that it is inferior to a solid business phone such as a the E72. In my case, it checks 5 mail accounts, notifies me of new messages instantly, keeps track of all my appointments, makes sures I don't get lost wherever I am on the planet, is great for a quick read on the internet, a YouTube video or a bit of twittering, allows me to make cheap international calls through Skype, takes my snapshots and last but not least... wakes me up in the morning :)
Do yourself a favour and consider buying the Nokia E72.

The all new iPhone 5 is already buzzing with speculation. Will the iPhone 5 be a complete redesign? Yes! The current Apple iPhone release wasn't much to rave about, although people do really like Siri, the personal assistant. However, the iPhone 5 is going to have some amazing new hardware and features like 3D video and pictures, newly designed keyboards and 4G speeds to name a few!

The new iPhone 5 is going to be loaded with awesome new features like video chat on 3g and 4g (no longer restricted to WiFi only), face recognition and extreme downloading. Also there is a new chat service between Apple devices! Similar to the blackberry messenger service. It has also been integrated into the SMS/MMS application used originally on the iPhone models. (List of possible features below). The new iPhone 5 features are speculated, these features are well received by the public and will typically follow suit based on previous releases and their features.

This iPhone 5 will be equipped with a two A5 chip processors and higher more powerful graphic chips that can deliver higher video resolutions (5-9 times better and 7 times faster) and amazing "still" images when taking pictures, AND it will make multi-tasking a lot faster, in addition to adding support for 4G speeds. The processor will have speeds at 1.5 - 2.0 GHz and 1GB of RAM. Obviously the new iPhone 5 will have iMessage, iOS5, iCloud and all the standard features of the iPhone 4S, including Siri the personal assistant. These improvements alone will be healthy competition for the newly released Samsung Galaxy S II.

Apple recently filed several patent applications in order to bring 3D picture capturing to the iPhone 5. This phone will be capable of rendering, capturing and processing 3D images, which coincides with the recent changes to the dual-camera hardware. The new iPhone 5 will also be capable of taking pictures in Panorama!

The new iPhone 5 will boast 4G also known as LTE (Long Term Evolution) speeds, according to AT&T which is due to the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) which is in line with the most recent technology standards for mobile networks.

New Apple iPhone 4S: All the Information

Apple's new iPhone 4S is just last year's design loaded with a new brain and more memory. It will run your apps faster and Apple's new iOS5's Assistant, an artificial intelligence program that listens and interprets your orders, and a new camera.

It just looks exactly the same, but there's plenty of changes inside:
Design

It's the same old design as the iPhone 4. Nothing to say here. Same materials, same look. Plus: Your current case will work.
The guts

• CPU and graphics: The iPhone 4S now has the iPad 2's dual-core A5 CPU. It also has dual-core graphics, which will allow for faster and more detailed 3D. Apple claims this hardware combination makes the iPhone 4S seven times as fast as the iPhone 4 on games, and two times as fast on normal tasks.

• Internet speed: Like rumored, the new iPhone 4S runs on faster HSPA+ networks. That means that your telephone will download stuff faster from the Internet. Before it was up to 7.2 Megabits-per-second downloads. Now they claim two times as much: 14.4Mbps. This depends on the carrier, of course. I don't know about you, but on AT&T I never get the maximum speed they claim.

Apple claims that, in real life situations, they are fast or "faster" as the competition's phone on faster 4G networks. We will test that claim.

Update: AT&T has pointed out that their phone will be faster than Verizon and Sprint's because their iPhone 4S models will only run on CDMA. The speed boost will only work on HSPA+ networks. If you want that download speed increase, it seems that the only option is AT&T. In addition to that, Verizon and Sprint's iPhone 4S would only do voice or data. AT&T's iPhone 4S will do both simultaneously.

New Apple iPhone 4S: All the Information• New camera: There's a new camera in the iPhone 4S. Its sensor is 8 megapixels, compared to the previous 5 megapixels. Much better than before. The most interesting thing is the sensor, however: It's a CMOS backside illuminated sensor. Apple says that gets you 73% more light than the iPhone 4 sensor. The latter was already quite impressive, so I can't wait to try this one. Apple has also remodeled the lens system, with five lens elements. They say they get now f2.4, which is very good.

The camera system is also faster than the previous version.

• New HD video: With the new sensor and new lens system, the camera now shots video at 1080p video with real-time image stabilization and temporal noise reduction.

• Battery life: Apple claims the new processor doesn't impact the life of the battery. All the contrary. They say it will give you 8 hours talking battery life with 3G networks. If you set your phone to 2G, you will get 14 hours of talk time. 3G web browsing will give you six hours of battery life, while Wi-Fi access runs up to nine hours.

Video playback sets the battery at an impressive 10 hours maximum, while music goes up to 40 hours. These numbers best the iPhone 4's previous theoretical battery life.

• New antenna design: Apple says that they have changed the antenna system, presumably to solve the signal attenuation problem.

• Storage: The iPhone comes now with 16, 32 and 64GB of storage.
