===

Offering: Live at Temple University (Resonance Records, 2014), Getz/Gilberto ’76 (Resonance Records, 2016), Moments in Time (Resonance Records, 2016)…and these are just the most recent (not to forget several Wes Montgomery) releases.
Resonance Records steps up (again) and releases what can only be considered the apotheosis of live jazz performance, All My Yesterdays: The Debut 1966 Recordings at the Village Vanguard.
Before even considering the music, there is the captured ambiance.
Recorded by a then 19-year old amateur engineer, George Klaban, the period technology may be lacking by today’s standards.
Maybe even Klaban’s amateur status could call things into question.
However, the results provide the listener with a very intimate listening experience that only lacks the smell of just-lit Lucky Strikes and Cutty Sark on the rocks.
Klaban’s gig pack included a Crown Professional two Track stereo tape recorder, an Ampex four-input mixer and six mics (Neumann U67, Bayer and AKG professional mics and an Electro Voice 654 Dynamic, the last used for the bass).
Klaban details that he placed one mic each for the reeds, trombones, and trumpets, the fourth for the bass, the fifth for the piano and the last for the leader, Thad Jones.
The result of this alchemic paradigm is a presence, not in the audience, but up over the middle of the band looking (hearing) down (a physical impossibility given the compressed confines of the Village Vanguard).

Nonetheless, the sound and atmosphere is electrically charged and immediate.
The sound is spacious enough to get up and walk around in, passing through all of the sections.
It is musical arrangement as subatomic metaphor…each musical element interacting with and against one another to produce a compounded product of rare substance and beauty.
It is immediately evident that there is something special taking place.
Queue up the first performance of the Thad Jones composition and arrangement “Back Bone” and listen.
Alto saxophonist Jerry Dodgion spits out an unaccompanied blues chorus of spurred on with shouts and encouragement from the band with Thad Jones himself anticipating the entry of the whole band with a grand, “Yeah!”
This is unbridled joy in music making.
Evidence of Bill Basie is all over the charts, in both the riffing and solos.
Altoist Jerome Richardson introduces “Little Dipper” twice and pianist (and Thad Jones’ brother) Hank Jones channel the spirit of the still living Count Basie.
This is, simply, what live music is all about: invention, spontaneity, improvisation, and spring freshness.
Hear from where all big band since has come.

===

This CD reissue of a Pablo date features Frank Foster (on tenor and soprano) and Frank Wess (tenor, flute and alto) at their best.
They perform three Wess originals, one by Foster, and a variety of mostly underplayed standards (including Neal Hefti’s “Two for the Blues,” plus “Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most”) and a surprisingly uptempo “Send In the Clowns.”
With pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Rufus Reid and drummer Marvin “Smitty” Smith offering stimulating support, this is an excellent showcase for the two Franks.
A follow-up Concord set (Frankly Speaking) used the same personnel.
Drummer Mickey Roker propelled the 16 piece band with fire.
All this is on display at the April 1969 Baltimore concert issued for the first time on this CD.

Where the studio recordings featured relatively short pieces, this concert presents the band stretching out in full force.
Even 44 years later, this is big band jazz at its finest and a clear demonstration of Duke Pearson’s great talents as a leader, pianist, composer and arranger.

Recorded: At The Half Note Café, New York (NY); November 11, 1960

===

This 2004 remastered Rudy Van Gelder edition of Donald Byrd’s At the Half Note Cafe (the original double-disc version was only issued for the first time in 2000) appears to add one extra track “Theme (Pure D. Funk),” which clocks in at 1:51 and is also on the second volume in its full form, and a slightly shorter version of “Cecille.”
Here it clocks it at 12:52; on the 2000 issue it was 14:46.
The sequence has also been altered slightly.
The real deal is that, while this is the live date showcasing the Byrd quintet with Pepper Adams (and with Duke Pearson, Lex Humphries, and Laymon Jackson in the rhythm section), there is little here to make this worth purchasing yet again if you have the previous set.
The sound is only marginally better and is likely only to be noticed by audiophiles.
However, if you don’t have the originals, this is one of the most essential hard bop purchases in the canon.

The performances of Pearson of his own four tunes, five by Byrd, and the standards showcase his improvisational acumen at its height.
His soloing on studio records pales in comparison.
This was a hot quintet, one that not only swung hard, but possessed a deep lyricism and an astonishing sense of timing, and one need only this set by them to feel the full measure of their worth.
Forget the Riverside date that caught them live early on; this is the one.

Tony Allen Thanks…
“All my family, Nigerian folks, and all those who support Afrobeat who made this album possible.”

===

Product Description
Secret Agent comes from the deep, molten core of Afrobeat. Tony Allen has long been acknowledged as Africa’s finest kit drummer and one of the continent’s most influential musicians.
Together with Fela Kuti (with whom he played for 15 years) he co-created Afrobeat – the hard driving, horns rich, funk-infused, politically insurrectionary style which became such a dominant force in African music and such an influence worldwide.

Tony has inspired generations of musicians and is a legendary figure amongst fans of funk, jazz, dance, hip hop and African music.
He has collaborated with a range of artists including Randy Weston, Groove Armada, Air, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Manu Dibango and Grace Jones.
He has gained a more mainstream audience since he became a founder member of The Good The Bad and The Queen (alongside Damon Albarn, Paul Simenon and Simon Tong) whose self-titled debut album was widely hailed by rock critics as one of the best albums of 2007.

==

BBC Review
Mr Afrobeat’ returns, this time on the world’s leading world music label.
Like his last album Lagos No Shaking, this was recorded in Allen’s old stomping ground, Lagos, the sprawling Nigerian megacity he refers to as ‘a complete mother****** of a place’.
And, just as on that record, Allen is joined by several local guest vocalists. It’s business as usual and business, as usual, is pretty damn good.

The title may well refer to Allen’s famously spectral presence on his own albums, so ubiquitous but unobtrusive that he’s almost invisible when he’s right there in front of you.
Although he is Africa’s most famous drummer, you won’t hear any drum solos on Secret Agent.
But his kit is a constant presence driving the vibe, the trademark double-kick drum motif of Afrobeat criss-crossing with ting-tinging ride cymbals, gasping hi-hats, shuffling snares and those deceptively simple rolls on the toms that conclude a typical Tony Allen bar.

Gratifyingly, he book-ends the album with two of his own casually murmured lead vocals – partly a by-product of having to sing and play at the same time for much of his solo career.
There are five other lead singers, most obviously Oribiyi Adunni a.k.a. AYO, whose sometimes strident vocals bring a contemporary R&B/soul diva flavour to Ijo, Nina Lowo, Ayenlo and Atuwaba.

The other most notable vocal presence is King Odudu, sounding as if he could easily be a member of Fela Kuti’s family on the slinky Celebrate and Pariwo.
Despite the relaxed vibe of the latter, its militant Broken English lyrics (‘culture, not torture’) continue Kuti’s Afrobeat tradition of speaking out against injustice.
And the same is true of the ‘blaxploitation’-flavoured Elewon Po, which finds Allen protesting that there are ‘Too many prisoners’.

Secret Agent boasts some very tasty licks from Cameroonian guitarist Claude Dibongue, and especially sublime horn arrangements by co-producer Fixi, who also tinkers with Rhodes, keyboards, synths, trombone and accordion in a couple of places.
Although Tony Allen is approaching his 70th birthday, Afrobeat’s co-creator isn’t resting on his laurels.
–Jon Lusk

***

McAll (well known initially as Vince Jones’s pianist), recorded this impressive debut in three cities on two continents with 19 musicians, with crews from Melbourne, Sydney and New York.

Matching McAll’s flowing, elegant piano are many outstanding players, including Lloyd Swanton, Phillip Rex (bass), Dale Barlow (tenor), David Rex (alto), Russell Smith, James Greening (trombone), Scott Tinkler (trumpet) and Allan Browne (drums).
Americans Vincent Herring (alto) and legendary drummer Jimmy Cobb make significant contributions.
“The session with Vincent and Jimmy – recorded while they were here with Nat Adderley in ’94 – was very special. It seemed surreal cramming them into my small St Kilda flat to rehearse.” McAll.

McAll’s imaginative and distinctive composing is captured in Exit.
McAll wrote seven (and co-wrote two) of the twelve tracks and features an interpretation of New Yorker, Billy Harper’s Destiny Is Yours.

“I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with all the great players on this CD.
The session with Vince Herring and the legendary Jimmy Cobb (recorded while they were here with Nat Adderley in early 1994) was very special.
It seemed surreal cramming them into my small St Kilda flat to rehearse.
The music from the New York session came about through both a desire to document my playing and to record with the players I heard there.
Jim Seely and Andy McKee were working with the Mingus Dynasty band, and Scott Neuman was with John Hart’s band.
I was knocked out by Tim Ries when we worked together in Joe Roccisano’s Big Band.
Luckily I managed to assemble them in the studio.
As for Jim McLeod (and his Jazztrack Program) and the Australia Council, thanks for the chance to put together my ideas and all these people to make this CD finally become a reality.
Lastly, thanks to Michael Watt for his generosity and true support of my music.”

***
Biography by AllMusic:

b. Melbourne, Australia.
In his childhood, McAll was exposed to all forms of jazz.
His father was a traditional jazz lover, while elder brother John introduced him to more recent and contemporary artists such as Bud Powell and Bill Evans.
McAll played in the Melbourne jazz scene in the mid-80s and in 1986 was chosen as pianist for Vince Jones.
He was featured on the subsequent Jones albums, It All Ends Up In Tears (1987) and Trustworthy Little Sweethearts (1988).
In 1989 McAll worked with American alto saxophonist Vincent Herring, who encouraged him to write more original compositions.
A year later McAll won the inaugural AMP Jazz Piano Award at the Wangaratta Festival Of Jazz and he spent the prize money travelling to New York, USA, to study and perform.
In 1992 he rejoined the Vince Jones group as pianist and musical director.

After touring Europe a year later, McAll shared the APRA award for Best Jazz Composition Of The Year with Jones for their work on Future Girl.
In late 1994, he toured with saxophonist Dewey Redman and in early 1995, with drummer Cindy Blackman.
The same year McAll released his debut, Exit.
It featured the best of Australia’s young jazz musicians and visiting Americans including Herring and Jimmy Cobb and contained seven originals played with impressive swing and vitality.
Barney McAll is a versatile performer with a striving, melodic style and his debut album heralded the arrival of a mature, creative talent.

***

The Lee Konitz Nonet never really prospered, but they recorded several excellent albums.
With such top players as flügelhornist John Eckert, trombonist Jimmy Knepper, and baritonist Ronnie Cuber in the group, and colorful arrangements provided by Sy Johnson, this band’s repertoire was as wide as one would expect from a Konitz band.
Whether it be the Louis Armstrong-associated “Struttin’ with Some Barbeque,” a Lester Young-inspired “Sometimes I’m Happy,” Charlie Parker’s “Chi-Chi,” “Giant Steps,” or some newer originals, the results are frequently superb.

***

Shortly after returning to the U.S. (following three years in Copenhagen) Stan Getz had a musical reunion with Bob Brookmeyer.
As usual the cool-toned tenor blends in very well with the valve trombonist and, backed by a fine rhythm section (pianist Steve Kuhn, bassist John Neves and drummer Roy Haynes), they perform three Brookmeyer pieces (including one titled “Minuet Circa ’61”), two standards and Buck Clayton’s “Love Jumped Out.”

This little-known session is often quite memorable.
