START THE ENGINE
An engine that will not start or is hard to start is frustrating. More than otherwise, the problem is very mild and can be found with a simple and logical troubleshooting approach.
Below shows a starting point to isolate engine starting problems. Engine does not start spark test to determine if the ignition system is working correctly.
1. Remove one of the spark plugs.
2. Connect the connector cable and spark plug spark plug and makes contact with the spark plug based on a valid reason, such as the cylinder head of the engine (Figure 6). Place the spark plug so you can see the electrodes.
3. Start the engine with the starter motor. A fat blue spark should be obvious between the electrodes of the spark plug.

Engine oil level control

YAMAHA XV535-1100 VIRAGO • 1981-2003

Engine oil level is checked through the window in the lower part of the cover left carter (Figure 15).
1. Place the motorcycle on the cable. Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature.
2. Stop the engine and allow the oil to settle.
3. The oil level must be between the minimum and maximum marks in the window (Figure 15). If necessary, remove (Figure 16) oil filler cap and add the recommended oil (table 4) to raise the oil to the proper level. Do not overfill.

FUEL, EXHAUST AND EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEMS
The fuel system is composed of the tank (s), fuel filter with shut-off valve, two Carburetors Hitachi of constant speed, (XV1000 and XVI100) fuel pump and cleaner air.
The exhaust system consists of two exhaust pipes, pipe and two silencers link. Some models are equipped with emission control systems to comply with State and federal regulations. These systems are discussed in this chapter.

Preparing to Ride
What you do before you start a trip goes a long way toward determining
whether or not you’ll get where you want to go safely. Before taking off on any trip, a safe rider makes a point to:
• Wear the right gear.
• Become familiar with the motorcycle.
• Check the motorcycle equipment.
• Be a responsible rider.

Ride Within Your Abilities
Your ability to perform and respond to changing conditions is influenced by how fit and alert you are. Alcohol and other drugs, more than any other factor, degrade your ability to think clearly and to ride safely. As little as one drink can have a significant effect on your performance.
No one is immune to the effects of alcohol or drugs. Friends may brag about their ability to hold their liquor or perform better on drugs, but alcohol or drugs make them less able to think clearly and perform physical tasks skillfully.
Judgment and the decision-making processes needed for vehicle operation are affected long before legal limits are reached.
Many over-the-counter, prescription, and illegal drugs have side effects that increase the risk of riding. It is difficult to accurately measure the involvement of particular drugs in motorcycle crashes. But we know what effects various drugs have on the process involved in riding a motorcycle. We also know the combined effects of alcohol and other drugs are more dangerous than either is alone.

Earning Your Endorsement
To earn your motorcycle endorsement, you must pass a knowledge test and an on-cycle skills test or present a TEAM OREGON Basic Rider Training course completion card. Knowledge test questions are based on information, practices, and ideas from this manual. They require that you know and understand road rules and safe riding practices. An on-cycle skills test will be conducted in a controlled, off-street area. If you present a TEAM OREGON Intermediate Rider Training course completion card, only the on-cycle skills test will be waived.

Motorcycle Safety

Important Safety Information
Your motorcycle can provide many years of service and pleasure-if you take responsibility for your own safety and understand the challenges you can meet
while riding.
There is much that you can do to protect yourself when you ride. You’ll find many helpful recommendations throughout this manual. The following are a few that we consider most important.
Always Wear a Helmet
It’s a proven fact: helmets significantly reduce the number and severity of head injuries. So always wear an approved motorcycle helmet and make sure your passenger does the same. We also recommend that you wear eye protection, sturdy boots, gloves, and other protective gear (page 38 ).
Take Time to Learn & Practice
Even if you have ridden other motorcycles, take time to become familiar with how this motorcycle works and handles. Practice in a safe area until you build your skills and get accustomed to the motorcycle’s size and weight.
Because many accidents involve inexperienced or untrained riders, we urge all riders to take a certified course approved by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation
(MSF). See page 40 .
Ride Defensively
The most frequent motorcycle collision happens when a car turns left in front of a motorcycle. Another common situation is a car moving suddenly into your
lane.
Always pay attention to other vehicles around you, and do not assume that other drivers see you. Be prepared to stop quickly or make an evasive maneuver. For other riding tips, see the booklet, You and Your Motorcycle: Riding Tips and Practice Guide, which came with your new motorcycle (USA only).

Before Servicing
Before starting to perform an inspection service or carry out a disassembly and reassembly operation on a motorcycle, read the precautions given below. To facilitate actual operations, notes, illustrations, photographs, cautions, and detailed descriptions have been included in each chapter wherever necessary. This section explains the items that require particular attention during the removal and reinstallation or disassembly and reassembly of general parts.
Especially note the following.
Battery Ground
Before completing any service on the motorcycle, disconnect the battery cables from the battery to prevent the engine from accidentally turning over. Disconnect the ground cable (–)
first and then the positive (+). When completed with the service,
first connect the positive (+) cable to the positive (+)
terminal of the battery then the negative (–) cable to the negative terminal.

Edges of Parts
Lift large or heavy parts wearing gloves to prevent injury from possible sharp edges on the parts.

Solvent
Use a high-flush point solvent when cleaning parts. High
- flush point solvent should be used according to directions
of the solvent manufacturer.

Cleaning vehicle before disassembly
Clean the vehicle thoroughly before disassembly. Dirt or
other foreign materials entering into sealed areas during vehicle
disassembly can cause excessive wear and decrease
performance of the vehicle.

ENGINE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION
Note:
Be sure to never reconnect loop diagnostic plug. The loop provides the link between the
module of immobilization and injection/ignition ECU device and it is essential to be able to start the engine
IMPORTANT POINTS
Fuel system
Before you begin, clean power supply.
The injection system consists of precision components and can not withstand impurities. Perfectly
own working conditions are essential.
Note:
Before any intervention, allow motor to cool for at least 2 hours.
Gasoline is highly flammable, do not smoke in the work area and to avoid the proximity of open flames or sparks.
Work in a well ventilated and clear area.
The fuel lines must be replaced if they show signs of wear, cracks, etc.
In addition, the hoses and clips are specific and must be replaced with original spare parts
DASHBOARD
Meanings and description of warning lights
Note: The above diagram shows the Elystar 125-150 cc speedo
Elystar 50 cc, there is the engine temperature indicator and the indicator ABS/PBS
When is the power connected:
1. Immobilizer coded diagnosis (1) LED turns on and shuts off after 0.5 seconds
If there is an immobilizer fault, the LED flashes several times according to the detected defect and then stays on
2. The EFI (electronic fuel injection) or light diagnostic subordinated notes (two times (direct injection) (2)
It turns on and shuts off when the engine is started
If there is an error of injection system, the lamp flashes or stays on
3 Light ABS/PBS (System Anti lock system/braking of the amplifier) (3) diagnostic lights
and shuts off once the vehicle is in motion (more than 5 km/h) (Elystar only)
If there is a failure of ABS/PBS, the lamp stays on
4-(4) Battery charge indicator does not illuminate.
However, the light can come at least 11.6 V or more 15.8 V to show that there is a fault in the battery
charging circuit
5-(5) Oil pressure indicator turns on then shuts off when the engine starts. This warning lights
at this time under 0.5 bar to indicate a decrease in the pressure of the engine oil (it stops the machine as soon as possible) (South
ELYSTAR 50 cc, this indicator is used to separate the oil level in the system of lubrication and 3 laps
seconds after the ignition is switched on)
IMMOBILISER TRANSPONDER
PRECAUTIONS:
Check that the loop of the diagnostic plug is equipped. The loop provides the link between the immobilizer module and
injection/ignition ECU and is essential to be able to start the engine
If the circuit is not available, the diagnosis of the transponder LED remains the same (no link between the immobilizer)
and the ecu)
