He Was Not Himself is now available! This new private investigator mystery drops Zachary Goldman into a case that begins quietly—and turns unsettling fast. A father worries his daughter’s perfect boyfriend is hiding something, and the deeper Zachary digs, the more the truth refuses to line up.

Love a mystery where something feels wrong long before anyone can prove it?

He Was Not Himself is part of the Zachary Goldman Mysteries, and this case starts with one of my favorite kinds of setups: a situation that looks ordinary from the outside, but gets more unsettling the closer you look.

A Case That Feels Wrong from the Start

A father hires private investigator Zachary Goldman to look into his daughter’s new boyfriend. On paper, it sounds simple. Reassure the family. Do a little digging. Put everyone at ease.

But that is not what happens.

A High-Risk Case Zachary Never Wanted

The boyfriend is charming, polished, and almost impossible to pin down. The details around him do not quite line up. The emotional stakes keep climbing. And Zachary, who is trying very hard not to take on another high-risk case, finds himself drawn deeper than he intended.

One thing I especially love about this book is the tension between what people show the world and what they keep hidden. That pressure is everywhere in this story. It affects the case, the family at the center of it, and the way Zachary has to navigate what he sees versus what he can actually prove.

FAQ

What kind of mystery is He Was Not Himself?

It is a gritty private investigator mystery with psychological suspense, family pressure, and dark emotional stakes.

Can I read it without reading the rest of the series?

Yes. This is book 22, but the central case stands on its own and works well as a new-reader entry point.

What themes are in the book?

False appearances, trust, intuition, family secrets, loyalty, recovery, and the tension between what people show and what they hide.

Is Zachary Goldman a traditional detective?

He is a private investigator, not a police detective, and that gives the series a more intimate, character-driven feel.

What makes this one different?

The core hook is very immediate: a boyfriend who seems perfect, a father who cannot shake his doubts, and a PI who realizes the truth is much messier than anyone expected.

Where can I get it?

Welcome to Bleeding Hearts Valley, a standalone series of interconnected thrillers in one twisted midwestern suburb.

A mystery from USA Today Bestselling author, P.D. Workman that will keep you turning the pages!

A gripping psychological thriller of small-town secrets, buried evidence, dangerous attraction, and a cold case that won’t stay buried.

Graham Hall thought he was just clearing out an old house.

Then he found the dress.

Hidden in the attic of a foreclosed home is a bloodstained sundress that points back to a family no one in town wants to talk about. A mother who disappeared. A daughter whose story never added up. A neighborhood full of people who heard too much, saw too much, and did nothing.

Graham has spent his life cleaning up other people’s messes, but this one reaches far beyond dust and debris. The more he digs into the Davis house, the more Bleeding Hearts Valley pushes back. Witnesses turn slippery. Police hit limits. Threats start arriving at his apartment.

Now Graham is caught between a chilling old mystery, a new romance, and a town that has survived by keeping its darkest secrets locked away. In Bleeding Hearts Valley, asking the wrong questions can cost you everything.

The Past Bleeds is a slow-burn, emotionally charged psychological thriller packed with buried secrets, escalating menace, and the kind of tension that keeps readers turning pages late into the night.

Keep coming back to Bleeding Hearts Valley to uncover more dark secrets. But before moving in remember, you can never trust your neighbors.

Praise for P.D. Workman

“Every single one of [P.D. Workman’s] books has spoken to me … And I have found strength in the books I’ve read.”

“This is one author I certainly will be looking out for, I can’t recommend her enough.”

“I’ll read anything by P. D. Workman that I can get my hands on.”

“Every book by PD Workman that I’ve read has been a gripping one, however different the genres are, going from lighter mysteries to really dark ones… this is one of my favourite, most dependable authors.”

“P.D. Workman is an incredibly versatile writer. No matter which of her books I read I am drawn into a great story and honestly, I don’t think I’ve followed another author that could go from cozy mystery to YA to a PI series dealing with mental health issues. Really enjoy her books!”

“[P.D. Workman’s] stories are so believable and you can’t help but feel like you know these people. You find yourself crying, laughing and feeling the characters emotions. Now if an author can make you cry and feel every emotion in a story, she is one hell of an author.”

“P. D. Workman, does not shy from probing the deep psychological scars of childhood trauma, mental illness, and addiction. Also characteristic of this author, these extremely sensitive issues are explored with extensive empathy, described with incredible clarity, and portrayed with profound insight.”

“Once again P.D.Workman has created an intense psychological mystery that impacts a wallop of thought induction. The writing is so well developed and draws you into the characters story.”

These posts cover the shift from awareness to acceptance, autistic identity, neurodiversity, crisis support, and the bigger conversation around inclusion. If you are looking for a practical reading path, start with Starting with Autism Awareness, then move to Autism Acceptance Month and Celebrating Autistic Identity.

Why This Matters

I have written about autism for years. Some of these posts are about resources. Some are about books. Some are about the harm caused when people are ignored, pathologized, or forced into a shape that was never meant for them.

If you are new to this topic, start with Starting with Autism Awareness. If you are ready to go deeper, move on to Autism Acceptance Month, Celebrate Neurodiversity and Inclusion, and Autism Acceptance: Reading about Intersectionality.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between autism awareness and autism acceptance?

Awareness notices autism exists. Acceptance treats autistic people with respect, dignity, and room to be themselves. I care much more about the second one.

Where should I start?

Start with Starting with Autism Awareness. Then read Autism Acceptance Month and From Stigma to Strength: Celebrating Autistic Identity.

Which of your books connects most directly to this topic?

His Hands Were Quiet is the clearest place to start if you want fiction that deals directly with autistic children, harm, and being heard.

Do you only recommend your own books?

No. My autism posts also point toward autistic writers, autism-positive books, and broader reading on neurodiversity.

Do you have posts that deal with autism in difficult real-world situations?

Yes. Autism Awareness During Crisis looks at what happens when everyday supports disappear and stress goes through the roof.

Flawed Detectives

Why They Make the Best Mystery Leads

Flawed detectives make mystery fiction richer, more tense, and more human. I do not want a detective who glides through a case untouched.

I want the detective who notices too much. The one who carries old hurt. The one who keeps going anyway.

That is the kind of lead who feels real to me.

Why a Flawed Detective Is More Compelling Than a Perfect One

If the detective is always right, always steady, always cool, he feels unreal. A comic book hero. An archetype there for the beats rather than a real person.

I want something grittier than that.

I want blind spots. I want fear. I want the sense that the case might hit a nerve and make things harder.

I want a person who makes mistakes, sometimes serious ones. Someone who has emotional reactions. Who feels things deeply, not who operates with machinelike efficiency.

How a Flawed Detective Raises the Stakes in Mystery Fiction

When a detective has limits, the tension grows.

He might push too hard. He might miss a cue. He knows exactly what pain looks like because he has lived. Those flaws and scars do not weaken the story. They make every choice feel more loaded.

Why Readers Love a Flawed Detective with Skill and Vulnerability

The detective still has to be good at the job. I am not saying I want chaos. Or not just chaos for the sake of chaos.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="300" height="300" data-attachment-id="46602" data-permalink="https://pdworkman.com/page-turning-twisty-mystery-they-sold-her-story/zachary-with-camera-square-3/" data-orig-file="https://pdworkman.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/zachary-with-camera-square-1.webp" data-orig-size="1080,1080" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="zachary with camera square" data-image-description="<p>#image_title</p>

What I want is the mix:

sharp instincts

real fear

flaws that matter

empathy that costs something

a sense that solving the case will change him

That is the kind of lead I can follow for a whole series.

Zachary Goldman as a Flawed Detective Mystery Lead

Zachary Goldman has never been a smooth hero. I love his mixture of grit, care, damage, focus, and stubborn drive.

He is a private investigator who sees things others miss, but he is not above the story. He is inside it. The things he has lived through shape what he notices, what he fears, and what he cannot let go.

That matters a great deal in They Sold Her Story, where the case presses on family pain, addiction, shame, and systems that prey on weak points.

An untouched detective would not bring the same force to that story.

How Flawed Detectives Create Deep Characterization in Mystery Novels

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="300" height="300" data-attachment-id="46504" data-permalink="https://pdworkman.com/they-sold-her-story-the-truth-they-tried-to-bury/they-sold-her-story-tropes-5/" data-orig-file="https://pdworkman.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/they-sold-her-story-tropes-5.png" data-orig-size="1080,1080" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="they sold her story tropes 5" data-image-description="<p>#image_title</p>

If you love mystery novels with deep characterization, odds are good you love flawed leads too.

Why?

Because flaws open doors.

They let us see how a detective thinks under stress. They let us see how past hurt shapes present action. They give the story resonance because the lead is not only solving the mystery. He is growing and working on his own challenges as well, the inside work.

That is a powerful place to work from.

The best mystery leads are not perfect; they are capable, wounded, stubborn, kind, reckless, sharp, and all too human.

That is the kind of detective I want to write, and the kind of detective you will find in They Sold Her Story, a page-turning private investigator mystery with deep character stakes.

FAQ

Why do readers like flawed detectives?

Because they feel real. Their limits, fears, and blind spots make the story more tense and more human.

Do flaws make a detective weaker?

Not at all. In a strong mystery, flaws often make the detective more layered, more believable, and more compelling.

Is They Sold Her Story a psychological mystery?

Yes. It combines private investigator casework with psychological tension, emotional stakes, and a missing-person investigation.

Do I need to read the Zachary Goldman books in order?

No. I write them so readers can jump in with the title that grabs them. There is series growth, of course, but each case stands on its own.

Is They Sold Her Story a standalone?

Yes. If this premise is the one calling to you, go ahead and start here.

Is this book very graphic?

No. It is definitely gritty and emotionally intense, but I am not interested in splatter for the sake of it. The suspense comes from the case, the pressure, and the people involved.

Is Kenzie Kirsch in this one?

Yes. Readers who enjoy Zachary and Kenzie together will find familiar series energy here too.

What kind of mystery is this?

It is a private investigator mystery with undercover elements, a missing-person hook, and strong psychological pressure throughout.

What if I want to start at book 1 instead?

Start with She Wore Mourning.

What if I want more backstory on Zachary first?

Read the free prequel He Didn’t Save Her.

The post Why Flawed Detectives Make the Best Mystery Leads first appeared on pdworkman.com.

Karen disappears from a rehab center just when it looks as though she may finally be getting her life back on track.

Her sister knows something is wrong.

The story the staff are telling does not sit right. Private investigator Zachary Goldman starts asking questions, and the more resistance he gets, the clearer it becomes that this is not a simple missing person case.

That setup gives the book the fast pull I love in suspense fiction. There is urgency right away. There is a locked-down setting. There are secrets, pressure, and a growing sense that someone is hiding more than they should.

It is twisty, but the twists have weight

I love a book that keeps readers guessing, but I care just as much about what those turns do to the people in the story.

In this book, the twists are tied to fear, control, family strain, and the cost of being ignored when you are already vulnerable.

That is where the emotional resonance comes from. I did not want clever for the sake of clever. I wanted a mystery where every shift in the case deepens the unease and raises the human cost.

Zachary brings a different kind of detective energy

If you like a trauma-informed detective, Zachary Goldman may be very much your kind of lead.

He is sharp, stubborn, and hard to shake off a case once he is in it. But he is also the kind of investigator who notices pain, shame, fear, and the ways people slip through the cracks when others would rather look away.

That makes him a strong fit for this story.

This is not a mystery about a cool outsider poking at a puzzle from a safe distance. It is a deeply personal case that pushes Zachary into a place where he has to feel the strain from the inside.

The character work is at the center

If you love mystery novels with deep characterization, this is where I think the book lands best.

The case matters, of course. But so do the family ties. So does the fear. So does the ache of wanting to believe someone can come home safe.

So does the cost of entering a place that feels wrong in your bones.

That is the kind of mystery I wanted to write: tense, dark, and twisty, but still full of people who feel real.

Why readers who love emotional suspense may connect with it

You may connect with They Sold Her Story if you are looking for:

a private investigator mystery with deep characterization

a page-turning twisty mystery

emotional resonance in your suspense

a trauma-informed detective

an undercover investigation inside a dangerous place

a mystery about buried truth, family strain, and power used badly

It is also a strong pick if you like standalone mysteries in a long-running series. You can jump in here and still get a full story.

Final thought

If that sounds like what you are looking for in your next mystery novel, take a look at They Sold Her Story.

Why Recovery and Addiction Raise the Stakes in Mystery Fiction

Why an addiction recovery mystery? Addiction recovery themes can add depth, urgency, and emotional truth to mystery fiction when handled with care.

Addiction changes more than one life. It moves through families, trust, memory, fear, hope, and shame. It leaves marks on everyone close to it. That is one reason addiction recovery themes can make mystery fiction feel so intense and so human.

These stories carry built-in emotional stakes

When a mystery touches addiction or recovery, it brings a lot with it right away:

fear of relapse

fear of not being believed

strain on family bonds

hope that feels fragile

the deep need for safety and care

Those things raise the stakes before the case has even fully opened up.

That does not mean the story has to become a lecture. Quite the opposite. The best books handle these themes through character, pressure, and the each choice people make when they are scared.

Care matters

I do not want addiction in a mystery to be there just as a shortcut for tension. I want it treated as part of a person’s lived reality.

That means the writing needs care. The people in the story need dignity. Their struggles need context. Their fear and hope both need room on the page.

When a book handles addiction recovery themes with care, it can become far more than a suspense novel. It can become a story about trust, harm, and the fight to hold on to yourself.

Why this works so well in mystery fiction

Mystery is a natural fit for stories about addiction and recovery because so much can be hidden:

what people are ashamed of and try to hide

what families are trying not to say

who is using whom

who is telling the truth

what kind of help is really being offered

That creates tension, but it also creates room for compassion and deep characterization.

Why this matters in They Sold Her Story

In They Sold Her Story, addiction recovery is not a side detail pasted onto the plot. It is part of the core of the case.

A woman vanishes from a rehab center. Her family is left trying to sort fear from doubt, hope from history, and truth from the stories other people are telling for her.

Zachary Goldman is not untouched by that world. He knows what addiction can do to a family. He knows the mix of frustration, love, fear, and guilt that can cling to every choice.

That gives the mystery its emotional charge.

What I look for in this kind of book

If you are looking for an addiction recovery mystery with real depth, here are the things I value most:

the people in recovery are treated as people first

family strain feels real

shame is present, but not the whole story

the mystery grows from human stakes

the book does not forget compassion

That mix is hard to get right, but when it works, it really works.

Final thought

Recovery themes can make mystery fiction more tense, more tender, and more true. They can raise the stakes in ways a simple suspect list never could.

If that is the kind of emotional mystery you are drawn to, They Sold Her Story offers a page-turning case with care, pressure, and real human cost.

FAQ

What is an addiction recovery mystery?

It is a mystery novel where addiction, sobriety, relapse, treatment, or family impact plays a key role in the emotional and story stakes.

Can a mystery about addiction still be suspenseful?

Absolutely. In many cases, those themes make the suspense even stronger because so much is tied to trust, fear, and survival.

Yes. If this premise is the one calling to you, go ahead and start here.

Want a standalone mystery series with real depth? Here is what to look for if you want a series you can jump into without losing the emotional payoff.

There are two kinds of mystery readers I hear from all the time. The first kind wants to start at book one and stay there for a long while. The second kind wants a place they can jump in right now without feeling lost.

I think both are fair. That is I try to write standalone mystery series that still have depth.

How a Standalone Mystery Series Lets You Jump In Anywhere

Long-running mystery series should be a joy to read. You get time with a protagonist you love. You get the comfort of a familiar world. You get the thrill of seeing that world deepen over time.

But I never want a new reader to feel shut out, either.

A good standalone mystery series should let you open a later book and still get:

a complete case

enough character grounding and backstory

emotional payoff

a reason to come back for more

Standalone Mystery Series with Depth: Rewarding Loyal Readers Without Confusing New Ones

Series depth is great when it adds richness. It is less great when it turns into homework.

I want returning readers to feel the long arc and the layered history. I also want new readers to feel welcome. That means each book has to stand on its own feet while still being part of a bigger whole. That is the sweet spot for mystery series fiction.

What Makes a Strong Entry Point in a Standalone Mystery Series?

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="300" height="300" data-attachment-id="46574" data-permalink="https://pdworkman.com/standalone-mystery-series-with-depth/readers-with-they-sold-her-story-square-4/" data-orig-file="https://pdworkman.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/readers-with-they-sold-her-story-square-4.png" data-orig-size="1080,1080" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="readers with they sold her story square 4" data-image-description="<p>#image_title</p>

As a reader, if I am trying a later book in a series, here is what I hope to find:

the case is fully satisfying on its own

the detective’s life feels lived-in, not confusing

side characters add warmth, not clutter

the emotional stakes are clear from the start

the book makes me want to go back for more

If a series can do that, I am much more likely to commit.

Standalone Mystery Series Example: Zachary Goldman PI Mysteries

The Zachary Goldman PI Mysteries are built so readers can come in at many points. Start with She Wore Mourning, book 1, with a prequel such as He Didn’t Save her or the upcoming holiday story She Won’t Be Home for Christmas. Start with He Broke the Silence or They Sold Her Story, or anywhere else in the series. Cross over from the Kenzie Kirsch Medical Thriller series. If you have been with Zachary from early on, you will catch the long arcs and the deep personal history. If you are new, you can still pick up a later case and get a full mystery experience.

They Sold Her Story works well as that kind of entry point because the core case is strong and clear from the start: a woman disappears from a rehab center, and the deeper Zachary digs, the worse things feel.

You get the case. You get the pressure. You get who Zachary is. And if you want more after that, there is more to read.

Why Readers Want a Standalone Mystery Series with Real Depth

If you have ever wanted a standalone mystery series with real depth, do not be scared off by a long shelf of books. Look for a lead with heart, a case that stands alone, and a world that feels big enough to return to.

That is the kind of reading experience I try to build, and if that sounds like your kind of mystery, They Sold Her Story is a good place to start.

FAQ

What is a standalone mystery series?

It is a series where each book tells a complete case, even though the lead and world carry across multiple books.

Is They Sold Her Story a psychological mystery?

Yes. It combines private investigator casework with psychological tension, emotional stakes, and a missing-person investigation.

The post How to Find a Standalone Mystery Series with Real Depth first appeared on pdworkman.com.

What is a cozy Easter mystery?

A cozy Easter mystery is a light, character-driven mystery set around spring or Easter themes, often featuring small towns, food settings, and amateur sleuths.

Are cozy mysteries violent?

Cozy mysteries keep violence off-page and focus more on the puzzle, characters, and community.

Do I need to read cozy mystery series in order?

Most cozy mysteries can be read as standalones, though reading in order can deepen your connection to the characters.

What makes a good Easter-themed mystery?

Spring settings, community events, food elements (especially baking), and a strong central mystery all contribute to a great Easter cozy.

Are there food or bakery cozy mysteries for Easter?

Yes—many Easter cozy mysteries feature bakeries, cafés, and recipes, making them especially popular for holiday reading.

The post Cozy Easter Mysteries: Kitchens, Creatures, and a Little Bit of Murder first appeared on pdworkman.com.

Welcome to Bleeding Hearts Valley, a standalone series of interconnected thrillers in one twisted Midwestern suburb.

Bleeding Hearts Valley hides its dark heart behind postcard-perfect porches and maple-lined streets. In this multi-author shared-world thriller series, seemingly ordinary townsfolk wake to find secrets, betrayals, and violence ripple through a valley that refuses to stay small. Each book is a standalone page-turner set in the tangled towns of Bleeding Hearts Valley — a place where loyalties fray, old wounds bleed into new crimes, and the past keeps turning up at the worst possible moment.

From intimate psychological suspense to fast-paced crime mysteries, the series blends razor-sharp characters, moral ambiguity, and twisty plots that keep readers flipping pages late into the night. Expect flawed heroes, complicated families, betrayals that sting, and endings that reframe everything you thought you knew. Whether you love a slow-burn unraveling of a family secret or a propulsive investigation that explodes into the open, Bleeding Hearts Valley delivers emotionally charged thrillers that reward readers who savor atmosphere, motive, and surprise.

Perfect for fans of small-town noir and character-driven suspense, the Bleeding Hearts Valley Thrillers are best read individually — but read more than one and you’ll start to see the valley’s hidden threads tie the stories together.

They Sold Her Story is a new private investigator mystery and psychological suspense novel, and I am so happy to get this book into your hands!

This is book 21 in the Zachary Goldman PI Mysteries series, featuring a trauma-informed private investigator drawn into a missing-person case that quickly turns into something much darker.

This case gets under Zachary’s skin fast. A woman named Erika hires him after her sister vanishes from a rehab program. Everyone around her seems ready to shrug and move on. Erika is not. Zachary isn’t either.

That setup let me write one of my favorite kinds of mysteries: the kind where the official story feels a little too neat, the pressure keeps building, and the people asking honest questions are the ones making everyone nervous.

What This Book Is About

At its heart, They Sold Her Story is a missing-person mystery and psychological thriller with a strong emotional core.

It blends private investigator fiction, undercover investigation, and character-driven suspense into a case where the truth has been buried under systems designed to look the other way.

It is about family loyalty, fragile hope, and the awful feeling that someone vulnerable may have been written off too quickly. It is also very much a Zachary Goldman book, which means the investigation matters, but so do the people caught in it.

If you like mysteries where the case is personal, the atmosphere is tense, and the detective has to push past walls that were built to keep people quiet, this one should be right up your alley.

Tropes and Reader Hooks

If you’re new to Zachary, he is not a polished, wisecracking superhuman detective.

He is sharp, stubborn, observant, and deeply compassionate. He pays attention when other people look away. He knows what it feels like to live with damage and keep going anyway. That makes him especially hard to fool, and especially hard to shake once he decides somebody matters.

That combination is a big part of what makes this series work for me. Zachary is gritty, but he is never careless with people.

Final Word

I love writing mysteries that dig into human pressure points without forgetting the people at the center of them. They Sold Her Story gave me the chance to do that with a case that feels urgent from page one.

If that sounds like your kind of read, I would love for you to pick it up.

Read They Sold Her Story.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I get They Sold Her Story?
