I was watching a segment on 60 Minutes this evening about the FDIC and realized that they were a busy group. So I checked their web site and sure enough they are hiring, here in the Portland area!

The FDIC is the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. Basically, banks pay them a premium and if anything happens to a bank, customer deposits are insured (up to a certain level, based on specific rules, etc). It's an interesting company as they are not funded by the government but they can be considered a government agency. In fact, their board of directors are appointed by the President of the United States and are confirmed by the US Senate.

The classifications of their open jobs are a little different than most companies. Some jobs are available to any applicants while others are exclusively for current federal employees and/or qualifying veterans. In Oregon, they operate an office in the Portland area, Lake Oswego (near I-5) to be exact. They are hiring for 10 different job titles right now, most of which they have multiple positions in the Lake Oswego office. Jobs include: Compliance Analyst, Risk Management Examiner, Compliance Examiner and Loan Review Specialist.

I'm guessing that prior banking or finance experience is a huge plus but may not be required. Key words on their site seem to be compliance, risk, analyst. So if you can do those things, it might be worth a shot at applying. Below are some direct links:

PDX Tech on LinkedIn now with Job board!

Not much more than 6 months ago, Greg Hughes and I set up a networking group on LinkedIn for Portland technology professionals. In the short time since we set the group up it has grown into the largest group representing Portland on LinkedIn with over 3,200 members and growing every day!

Just a couple months ago LinkedIn rolled out a message board feature for groups and our members quickly began using it to post job openings. I just noticed over this weekend that LinkedIn has now enabled a dedicated job board within each group. Posting a job in the group looks to be totally free. LinkedIn does give you the option to put up an official job listing visible to their entire site of millions but this is optional.

So if you and/or your company is hiring, make sure to post your job in the LinkedIn PDX Technology Professional's group. I am guessing that you will find a job posting in this group to be one of the most effective ways to reach an elite group of over three thousand local technology professionals.

A cool Portland based startup just landed $5m in venture capital. Rumor is that they'll be using some of it to hire more employee's.

AboutUs.org is a profitable web startup that currently employs 32 between Portland and India. Ray King, founder and CEO of AboutUs, told Rick Turoczy of RWW and SiliconFlorist that they may bring the employee total up to 50 during 2009.

So give them some time to celebrate their well earned cash infusion, then start looking out for some job postings. Good luck, you'll have a lot of competition.

It goes without saying that there really isn't much going on with hiring at smaller, lesser known firms in Portland. This economy is a mess and I'm guessing there are more unemployed Portland area folks now than ever before.

If I come across bright spots, I'll post. Otherwise, check out ReadWriteWeb's new featured site called JobWire. They are writing about tech companies willing to make investments in people during the downturn. Also, Mike Rogoway of the Oregonian is doing what I think is a weekly column on his blog, called Looking Forward where he writes about the good stuff going on around the Silicon Forest.

Job Alert: Decipher, Inc

The Portland Business Journal reported today that California based Decipher, a software centric market research company, would be opening it's 4th office in Portland.

Headquartered in Fresno and with offices in Los Angeles and New York, Decipher has put Portland in great company! I am sure we'll return the favor with all the exciting things that are going on in the Portland tech scene.

No specific jobs are posted on their web site but they do offer contact information for job inquiries. I don't doubt however that they will be doing some significant hiring for the new Portland office. The Portland Business Journal reported that the PDX office will be headed up by Decipher's co-founder and co-CEO. This is no standard field office, my friends.

Did you hear that Google just celebrated it's 10th anniversary? Crazy that a company that defines our culture and dominates our lives is only 10 years old! Now-a-days though, 10 years is nearly a lifetime.

What you may not know is that one of Portland's hottest tech companies you've never heard of is 11 years old. That's right, Tripwire which was founded in 1997, is going strong here in the Silicon Forest. Is it their star management team that keeps them going strong? Maybe the impressive BoD or the who's who of venture capital?

My Guess: all that and then some!

According to their web site, "Tripwire helps over 6,000 enterprises worldwide reduce security risk, attain compliance and increase operational efficiency throughout their virtual and physical environments. Using Tripwire's industry-leading configuration assessment and change auditing solutions, organizations successfully achieve and maintain IT configuration control."

So are you ready to join and help them continue that success? Maybe celebrate a 20th anniversary? Lucky for you, they are hiring. As of this writing their web site boast 11 open positions in nearly all departments including Marketing, Finance and R&D. Specifically, I have learned through the PDX Tech group on LinkedIn that they are looking for Product Marketing professionals. Bonus points if you have Security, IT Operations, Compliance or a Virtualization background.

It's been a while since my last post on a great Portland area employer. However, this week I came across a great reason to throw another post up: Meridian Technology Group.

I have my eyes open for a software position that I can refer a great friend of mine to. I noticed a Java based position on LinkedIn and came across Meridian. Little did I know that when I went to do more research I'd find out that they are hiring for over 100 positions in the Oregon area! I know, sounds crazy...but you can see for yourself!

They are looking for a plethora of technology focused individuals. Positions include: Java Developer, Java Lead, Business Systems Analyst, SAP Analyst, Sr Web Developer, QA Engineer, Telecommunications Engineer, Tester, Sys Admin, Project Manager, DBA, Marcom, Tech Writer, Help Desk Analsyt, Interwoven Developer, and many more!

Honestly, I had never heard of Meridian before stumbling across them yesterday. Their web sites says they are "an Information Technology consulting company developing mission critical, highly scalable business solutions and hardware/software engineering services for major and emerging clients throughout the western United States." They are headquartered here in Portland and despite the over 100 current openings, they employ a total of 135 according to Google Finance.

So check them out on your own and send a resume their way!

Cascade Microtech

Around Portland it seems to be just Intel and Tektronics that get all the attention in the semiconductor world. However, if you are looking for a job in that industry you have more options.

One of those options is Cascade Microtech. They are a worldwide leader in the precise electrical measurement of ICs and other small structures....headquartered right here in Beaverton, Oregon. In March of 2008 they reported just over 350 employees and also have major operations in Minnesota and Arizona with smaller office around the world. They are a growing company trading on the NASDAQ (CSCD), worth over $100m.

As of this writing they have 18 open positions posted on their web site including: SEC Reporting Analyst, Sales Manager, Probe Assembler and Software Systems Engineer just to name a few.

Vesta

The Portland Business Journal relayed the news today that Vesta (not to be confused with Vestas, which I blogged about last year) is going to be adding 200 positions to it's Portland area operations.

This is a big win for Portland as we enter what could be a drawn out phase of high unemployment and general economic worries.

Vesta is a mobile phone payment solutions provider that, in addition to other things, handles many of the payment made for pre-paid phones. They boast clients named Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile. Yep, they pretty much work with the who's-who of the wireless industry.

Their web site currently has an interesting mix of jobs, but the 200 new jobs don't appear to be up yet (and don't expect them all at once, it could take a year to ramp up). Right now you can apply for positions such as: Product Analyst, Sr Systems Admin, Human Resource Assistant, IT Project Manager and a few more.

Silicon Florist Job Board

My favorite blog is called Silicon Florist. It gets its name from this formula: Rose City + Silicon Forest = Silicon Florist. The focus is on smaller technology companies in the Portland Oregon area. Silicon Florist is usually the first outlet to break hot technology news coming from our community.

Silicon Florist now boasts a job board where you can find out about jobs at the hottest technology and creative companies in the Portland area. You won't find much in the way of jobs at Intel or Boeing, but you will see opportunities at companies I have written about in the past, like my favorite Jive Software.

Genentech, part 2

I wrote back in October 07 about Genentech, a company new to the Hillsboro area. I drive by their sprouting facility at the corner of Shute Rd and Evergreen Pkwy every day and noticed this week a big sign boasting about how great it is to work at Genentech.

I took another look at the job listings and they are still hiring for a variety of positions. If you are in the engineering field, this may be your best shot at a job change.

Their jobs page lists 34 positions including: Sr MES Analyst, Automation Engineer, Validation Engineer, Sr Maintenance Mechanic, Corporate Security Supervisor, and many more. Word on the street is that this facility will employ 300-500 people so I imagine they are hiring more than 1 person for each of the above positions.

Be a Teacher at Nike?

The point of this blog is to help you find jobs at places OTHER than Nike or Intel. However, I think this one is worth mentioning.

I spent 6 years at Nike and I continuously advise people that large, dynamic companies like Nike hire people for all sorts of positions. You don't have to be a salesperson or marketing whiz to work at Nike. Nike needs chefs, event planners, facilities managers, security guards, etc. In fact, during my tenure at the Swoosh they had multiple biologists on staff, studying the skin of amphibians. So don't count out a great employer just because your skill doesn't fit the stereotype.

Bringing this back full circle, Nike is aggressively hiring teachers! Thats right, the Nike campus in Beaverton hosts a child care and pre-school system with over 200 kids. In the next year, Nike's capacity for child development will more than double to 500 with the build out of a brand new state of the art facility.

This blog was started to help you find great jobs at little known employers in the Portland, Oregon area. I decided it was time to write about another little known but growing and successful Portland company: EthicsPoint.

You rarely hear about profit making companies that work in the field of ethics. By golly, they do exist! EthicsPoint is a technology based issue, incident, and event reporting company. Major corporations, nonprofits, and government organizations to collect complaints, tips, and information from employee's, regarding their employer. For example, is your boss harassing you and you're afraid to report this person for fear of retaliation? I started this blog with the explicit intent to help people find jobs in Portland at companies NOT named Nike or Intel. So it is a surprise to us both that I am posting about Nike.

While surfing around the interwebs doing some research for www.pdxcompanies.com I came across the most interesting job title I've seen in a long time: Human Resources Sensei!

It's at Nike and you just might be the lucky person. Visit http://www.nikebiz.com, click on "careers", then on "US", and finally on "search" near the lower right side. Search for job # 036280.

If you don't want to go through all that (they sure don't make it easy...I can't even link to it for you) here is an excerpt from the job posting:

Vestas- #1 in Modern Energy

Ever run around as a kid with a windmill in your hand, amazed by the motion and color? If that was you as a kid then Portland has the company for you as an adult. Vestas, not to be confused with another cool Portland based company, Vesta, is the worlds leading supplier of wind power turbines. They are headquartered in Denmark with 1,400+ employees world wide and their US headquarters right here in Portland...the heart of "green land".

Vestas has been on a hiring spree lately. In the past few years I have had at least 3 headhunters approach me with different opportunities. No wonder though...their web site boasts a 28% market share and they are the market leader. And if I am reading their financial statments correctly, they did over €3.5 billion in 2006 and are projecting over €4 billion for 2007. Yup, you did your math correctly...they do over $5 billion USD.

Ready to go to work? The jobs page on their site has about 10 current openings in Portland ranging from legal council, business development, customer service, and engineering.

I am back after a few weeks off. No good excuses, but I am determined to redeem myself after a couple of poor recommendations!

So I figure I need to come out of the gate swinging! And what better company to do that with than Jive Software?

These guys are one of the best stories of the Silicon Forest in a long time. Popular blog Silicon Florist recently did their bragging for them when reporting they won two big awards in the start-up world. They also just announced another round of funding to the tune of $15 million from prominent venture firm Sequoia Capital. To top it off, they are doing so damn well that they are moving into a bigger office. Does it get much better than that?

Actually, it can get better. Jive is hiring like crazy! Check out their jobs page and pick from any of the 14 openings they have right now. I'm talking VP level, marketing, finance, engineering, and sales.

What, you want to know what this company does or something? In short, they make really cool software that people and businesses use to collaborate with. And it aint just pie in the sky, pipe dream stuff. Their products really work well and real companies actually use them to improve their operations! I know, crazy concept, huh!

Trying to pronounce the name of this company reminds me a lot of that scene in "There's Something About Marry" when Ben Stiller's character tries, unsuccessfully, to pronounce Bret Favre's name. You gotta admit, it doesn't sound anything like it is spelled.

Anyway, I digress. And Genentech isn't nearly as hard to pronounce. Apparently though, they are easy to work for. Their homepage currently boasts two impressive workplace distinctions.

Now you have the chance to work at one of the nations foremost biotechnology companies, right here in the Portland, Oregon area. Construction is moving fast at their new, palatial, facility at Evergreen Pkwy and Shute Rd in Hillsboro.

SolarWorld, USA

I have been really excited to write this post and have been waiting for months to do so.

In March of 2007, German Based SolarWorld AG announced it would build North American's largest solar product plant right here in Hillsboro, Or. SolarWorld bought the long vacant Komatsu building for a reported steal of only $40 million! SolarWorld says they will be investing approximatly $400 million for the Silicon Forest area plant.

I've been driving by this monster of a building everyday and I can't help but think they'll be staffing this office with hundreds of jobs. Well the other day I finally found job listings on their site. They currently have 29 job postings as of this writing and I don't expect that number to anything but climb.

Granted, most of the jobs are in engineering, but I don't imagine that will be a problem considering the thousands of Intel employee's that work within walking distance of the new SolarWorld plant. I imagine a few of you are looking for a change, ya?

In addition to the engineering jobs, they are also looking for: Financial Analyst, Programmer Analyst, Accountant, Public Affairs Specialist, Human Resources and Administrative positions.

Hollywood Video

Most Portlander's probably already know that Hollywood Video was founded right here in good ol Portland. You probably also know that after a wild few years and tumbling stock prices, Movie Gallery (the nations then #3 movie rental chain) purchased Hollywood Video, the then #2 movie rental chain, in 2005.

What you PROBABLY DON'T KNOW is that Hollywood video is still headquartered in Wilsonville and has 17 corporate job openings as of this writing. And trust me, those jobs aren't going anywhere. In fact, insiders predict that Alabama based Movie Gallery will eventually move it's headquarters out here to Portland (read: "even more jobs").

Hollywood Video is currently hiring for positions in: Accounting, [local] District Management, Sales Analysis, Financial Analysis, Administration, and IT.

WebTrends

If you run your own blog or have a personal web site, you are probably familiar with Google Analytics. If you have ever worked with web sites for companies like Coca Cola, BMW, or Microsoft....you are probably more familiar with WebTrends. Matter of fact, if you are even a casual web surfer, I guarantee you probably have a cookie on your computer from a company using WebTrends software.

WebTrends is a darling of the dot-com boom. A big difference between them and the thousands of other companies tech companies that sprung up in the 90's is that WebTrends has a great product that provides value to the best known and often traditional companies we consume from everyday.

WebTrends was founded around 1993 and went public under the stock symbol WEBT in 1999. During the dot-com bust, they were purchased by NetIQ in 2001 only to become a private company again in 2005. Through all of these ownership ups and downs, Webtrends kept their headquarters right here in Portland and continued to make world-class software.

Now in private ownership with investment by Francisco Partners, Webtrends is rocking again and even looking at another, more successful, IPO in the coming years.

So what does this all mean to you? How about a great company to work at? A company that can weather the storm and come out stronger on the other side? How about an employer that counts the worlds most admired companies as its clients? A company that may very well make very wealthy people out of it's loyal employee's when it goes IPO again soon?

Just a quick heads up that I have switched the RSS feed on this blog over to Feedburner. As I recently started using RSS feeds to keep track of all the blogs I follow, I discovered that Feedburner is the most simple and effective way to publish a feed.

Personally, I use an RSS reader right in my Google Desktop Sidebar.
