The bases of things having nothing to do with religion or worship is considered permissable unless proof is given to say different.

1. Abu Hudhaifah Ibn Al-Yaman narrated that the Prophet said:

"Do not drink from gold and silver vessels, and do not eat from gold and silver dishes, for the disbelievers have them in this world but you will have them in the hereafter."

* Gold and silver is forbidden to eat or drink from but allowed to use in other ways.

* One shouldn't worry about gaining material possesions or being extravagant in this life.

2. Umm Slamah narrated that the prophet said:

"Whoever drinks from a silver vessel, is but filling his abdomen with hell fire."

* When ever the prophet warns us against something that will cause us to go to hell, then that means the something is considered a major sin. When one commits a major sin it is required of them to repent in order to be forgiven.

3. Ibn Abass narrated that the prophet said:

"If the animal's skin is tanned, it becomes pure."

4. The four Imams narrated that the prophet said:

"Tanning any skin purifies it."

5. Salamah bin Al-Muhabbiq narrated that the prophet said:

"Tanning the skin of a dead animal purifies it."

* The skin of a dead animal is impure until it's tanned.

6. Narrated by Abu Tha'labah Al Khushani: I said, "O messenger of God, we are living in a land belonging to the people of the book, so can we eat out meals with their utensils?" The Prophet replied:

"Do not eat from their utensils, except if you can't obtain utensils other then theirs wash them and eat with them."

* The reason that we are not to eat with the same utensils is because the people of the book cook pork and drink alcohol.

* This Hadith proves that Muslims lived amongst non-Muslims and the relations were peaceful.

7. Imran Bin Husain narrated:

"The prophet and his companions performed ablution from a water bag belonging to an unbelieving woman." {This is only part of a longer hadith.}

* The water tank of the woman was made of leather, so it shows the slaughtered animals of the non-Muslims is considered pure.

* The Prophet gave the woman dates in exchange for the water that was used. So, it becomes clear that cheating, taking advantage or trying to scam non-Muslims is not allowed. We should conduct fair dealing no matter who we are dealing with.

* Proves that dealing with the opposite sex is permissible for business as long as it doesn't cause fitnah.{}

8. Anas Ibn Malik narrated:

"The drinking cup of the prophet was broken and he mended it with a silver chain…"

* This hadith shows us that the prophet was humble and wants to show us not to be wasteful or extravagant.

* Using silver to fix utensils and containers is permissible.

Purification-part one

Water

There are two kinds of purification which are cleanliness and spirituality. Spiritual purification means to be free of polytheisms and bad manners. Cleanliness is the topic of our discussion.

Cleanliness means to be free from haduth {Arabic meaning impurities from inside} and najis {Arabic meaning impurities from outside}. To be clean from najis you must wash and remove it with water or anything else that's considered to be pure. In order to be clean from haduth you must make wudu {partial ablution} or ghusal {total ablution}.

1. Abu Hurairha, narrated that the prophet said:

"Concerning the sea, its water is pure and its dead animals are lawful to eat."

* Any animal that lives in the water doesn't need to be slaughtered before eating.
* If water changes its taste, with something considered pure, it doesn't make the water impure and can still be used to make ablutions.
* Unlike animals of the sea a land animal that dies naturally is forbidden to eat.

2. Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri, narrated that the prophet said:

"Water is pure and nothing defiles it.

* This hadith is self explanatory.

3. Abu Umamah Al-Bahili narrated that the prophet said:

"Water is not defiled by anything, except for what changes its smell, taste or color.

* This hadith makes it clear that there are two kinds of water, pure and impure. Pure water is any water that occurs naturally. Impure water is water that is changed by something impure.

4. Abu Hurairah narrated that the prophet said:

"None of you should wash in stagnant water when he is junub {impure due to intercourse}."

*This hadith makes it clear that a person can wash in stagnant water as long as they are not impure from intercourse or will not make the water dirty with something impure.

5. Al-Bukhari narrated that the prophet said:

"None of you should urinate into stagnant water and then wash in the same water."

* Urinating in stagnant water makes the water impure and forbidden to use to wash or make ablutions with it. This is derived form the rule of changing the smell, color or taste.

6. A companion of the prophet narrated:

"The prophet forbade that a woman should wash with the water left over by the man or that the man should wash with the water left over by the woman. They should use the water from the same vessel together.

7. Ibn Abbas narrated:

"The prophet used to wash with the water left over by Maimunah."

8. The author of Sunan reported that one of the prophet's wives washed from a bowl, and when the prophet came to wash from it. She said, "I was junub." He replied, "Water does not become impure."

* These hadith stress the importance of taking care of water and not being extravagant with it.
* It also becomes clear that being naked and bathing with you spouse is allowed.
*These hadith are proof that things inside the home maybe discussed with others when the point is to teach Islamic rulings.
* It also become clear that even when one of you is impure from intercourse you may still wash from the same tub and water.

9. Abu Hurairah narrated that the prophet said:

"If a dog drinks the water from a dish of anyone, then purify it by washing it seven times, using earth for the first or last washing"

*There are 3 ways to wash a dish a dog has drunk from. One is to first wash with dirt then water 7 times or wash 7 times with water then with dirt or to wash with mud seven times.
* This hadith proves dogs are impure.
* If you use a dog to flush or retrieve game while hunting you must wash the game 7 times if it was in contact with the dog's mouth.
* A dog's urine and bowel movements are impure.
* Dogs are considered to be one of the dirtiest animals.

10. Abu Qatadah narrated that the prophet said concerning cats:

"It is not impure; it is one of those who live among you."

* Cats aren’t considered impure because it lives among humans.
*The saliva and sweat aren't considered impure.

11. Anas Ibn Malik narrated:

"A Bedouin came and started to urinate in one of the corners of the mosque and the people then rebuked him, but the prophet stopped them. When the man had finished, the prophet ordered them to pour a large bucket of water over the urine."

* Mosque must be cleaned from impurities.
* One should be gentle when point out others mistakes.

12. Ibn Umar narrated that the prophet said God said:

"Two types of dead animals and two types of blood have been made lawful for us. The two types of dead animals are seafood and locusts, and the two types of blood are the liver and spleen."

* Muhammad can't say what is halal {permissible} and haram {forbidden} from his on accord.
* The seafood and locust must die naturally.
* Liver and spleen must be from a slaughtered animal.

13. Abu Hurairah narrated that the prophet said:

"If a housefly falls into the drink of anyone of you, he should dip it all in the liquid, for one of its wings has the disease, and the other has the cure."

* House flies are not considered an impurity.
*Any insect with out blood is not impure.

14. Abi Waqid Al-Laithy narrated that the prophet said:

"What ever is cut off from a live animal is considered dead."

*Any meat that is cut from a live animal is considered impure and forbidden to eat.

Coming soon to a blog near you...

Exlanations of Hadith from Bulugh Al-Maram compiled by Imam Ibn Hajr.
