class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We are a divided household on all matters royal. Personally, I love history and tradition and celebrations and was keen to revel in the excitement of being in London for the Diamond Jubilee. Marto on the other hand is not so much an anti-fan as decidedly negative about the monarchy as a whole. Still, I wasn't about to let such a weekend pass without some kind of celebration.

We reached a compromise. A lunch billed as a celebration of the first anniversary of Delilah living with us. Marto used the first two courses as an opportunity to open a bunch of old wines he and a friend bought a while ago. I used the pudding course as an opportunity to be jubilee themed, making a patriotic pavlova and serving it on jubilee plates and napkins. The cheese course was neutral.

I haven't had as much time as normal, I can't think why, to read about the weekend, to watch programmes about it and look at photographs. I'm not even sure exactly what events are planned, aside from a flotilla tomorrow which I will try and watch, because it appeals to something in me. The romantic perhaps? Plus, I love boats. It reminds me a little of the call for small boats to sail to Dunkirk and the procession of them gathering in the Thames and sailing in company for the meeting in Ramsgate before navigating the channel and helping rescue troops from the beaches of Normandy in a heroic act which helped raise the morale of the nation. {One of my favourite books is a children's book by Hester Burton, In Spite of All Terror. The description of Ben joining his grandfather in the 'little ships of Dunkirk' resonated far beyond my reading of the book. So much so, in fact, that I wrote my university dissertation on children's literature and the Second World War, with In Spite of All Terror as one of my key texts. But that's another story, for another time.}

Perhaps what appeals to me the most about the jubilee is the opportunity to reminisce, to celebrate the past as the present. It's not about the monarchy, per se, but British history, of the passing of time but also continuity. Much like marriage and our own families, the monarchy represents the same to me but on a national scale. This jubilee ties me to the jubilee of my parents' generation (they were graduating from university and were married the year after). To street parties and beacons and what feels like the definition of British *history* and *celebration*. For no other reason than any other wedding or anniversary, and the buzz of excitement, because at the very least, everyone likes a party and a bonus day off work.

And this photo, to me, represents all of this. An ordinary couple, a lifetime of commitment. To each other, as well as to the nation. Perhaps that's why I find the Queen so reassuring. I'm not sure whether this photo was taken to celebrate their own personal anniversary, or whether it was released to commemorate the jubilee. Hell, I couldn't even find a photo credit. It doesn't show a queen, there is no glamour or glitz to it, just a (well taken) snap shot. And, in the first photo, an amazing jacket being worn by Princess Elizabeth (I assume it was taken prior to her coronation based on her outfit as it appears more 1940s than 1950s to me, although I am very willing to stand corrected).

Anyway, happy jubilee weekend, whether you are celebrating or not.

{I found this photo on google images with no photo credit. If anyone knows of one, please email and I will add it. I can't imagine the shopping website's facebook page where it was posted was the original photographer, but if it was, I will gladly update this to include a link}

We had our first day out. And not only did we survive, we had a fantastic time. We went to Whitstable, driven by our friends. A long leisurely lunch at the Whitsable Oyster Company with Pip sleeping in her pram and then stirring to be fed just as we were ordering our coffees. I fed her at the table which allowed me to have the first caffeinated coffee since I found out I was pregnant. And then a walk, pottering in the shops whilst the boys swam, a drink outside the Old Neptune pub and then a walk along the beach in the evening sun, a trawl round the chip shops for supper (have you ever heard of a chip shop running out of fish?) eating them snugged out of the wind in the lee of a groyne, watching the sun dip below the horizon.

And then back, to London.

Where we drove past our collective previous selves Saturday night out. I could see us, standing outside Indo in Whitechapel, trying to get a taxi; sitting outside 333 in Old Street wearing the teeniest American Apparel black dress, smoking. Of nights in Brick Lane, Spitalfields, Shoreditch, Hoxton, Old Street, Upper Street. Past offices worked, pubs we spent hours in. Of meals eaten and drinks drunk and cigarettes smoked. Of dancing, of talking, of the drunken search for late night food. Of bus stops waited in, high heels in hand. The whole of my 20s viewed from the back seat of a car, across a car seat where my sleeping daughter and my new life lay.

The weekly

It's been a week of ups and downs. Whilst there have been flashes of sunshine, both literally and metaphorically, I feel like I've been wading through greyness and puddles for the vast majority of the week.

This morning though, M surprised me with a massage that he had organised secretly for me, followed by lunch, then pottering in the local shops, where we bought Pip a sun hat and a beautiful pair of organic cotton chocolate leggings (which she loved so much she immediately pooped on them). We then bought cheese, bread and salad for supper and had tea and cake in a lovely Danish cafe - although bizarrely, we actually were drawn in because they serve Monmouth coffee - that we hadn't been in before, but which I would recommend.

Yesterday, I met M's dad for lunch and then pottered in the shops, idly looking for something to wear that I can still breastfeed in and trying on boots that I can't afford, before returning home and having tea and biscuits with an old friend. As soon as I have the photos of her present, I will be sharing them, because they are too gorgeous not to.

It was only yesterday and today that doing normal things, with the addition of the baby, felt, well, pretty much normal. I'm not sure why this surprised me, that it took so long, because every time we make any changes to either our living situation or my working situation, I feel out of sorts for at least three or four weeks. And Monday will be four weeks.

As you may have gathered from my extended silence, or have read if you follow my Pip blog, Pip has arrived. We have been largely existing in a new baby bubble for the past three weeks. We had chosen not to find out Pip's gender, although we believed all through the pregnancy that Pip was a boy. However, when she was born, we discovered that she was, in fact, a girl. A daughter.
I actually already use Vanish and have done ever since I started buying my own clothes, when my parents gave me a clothing allowance when I was 13. I remember my mum teaching me to use that little bar of soap to remove stains, and it was a constant in my cleaning cupboard, especially as a student.

These days I use the oxi action powder and the whitening version, a scoop in with my whites and towels. Looking today at the Vanish website however, I was interested to note that they have a handy table for different types of stains, not only recommending the best of their products to deal with the specific issue but also useful advice on using the product. I was particularly interested in the advice on tea stains and red wine stains, as these are by far and above the two problems I deal with most. Only yesterday I was removing a tea stain from a duvet cover after laughing too much whilst eating my breakfast in bed and slopping tea over my favourite Toast striped duvet cover.
Between organising our new flat, preparing for Pip's arrival, attending appointments and stockpiling sleep, I don't really feel I've had time to achieve anything. Certainly not the time for writing and blogging that I hoped I would have.

Which isn't to say that I'm abandoning this space. I am still thinking about writing, it's just I've not yet managed to get my thoughts out. In the meantime, I have been writing over at thelittlepip, which is much more a sort of diary of being pregnant, but it's where you can find me more frequently than here, these days.

The Silence at the Song's End

Last night, an email from an unexpected source made me revisit this post, which I wrote on my previous blog, Little Miss Rachel, in 2007. Inspired by both the email and re-reading my own observations made me dig out the book and start reading. If you enjoy poetry, or have an interest in sailing, you will not be disappointed.
These are the words which Nicholas Heiney used to describe death; in the summer of 2006 he committed suicide following a long but hidden battle with mental illness. The son of Libby Purves (one of my favourite authors and columnists and for whom I have had great respect since my early teens) Nicholas Heiney first came to my attention in Purves account of a family sailing round England in her book One Summer's Grace. Nicholas was 5 and his sister Rose 3. In reality, Nicholas was the same age as me. I was deeply saddened to read of his death last year.

Yesterday, Purves wrote a column in The Times entitled A Testament of Youth describing her son, his writing and the book that she and Nicholas' professor at his Oxford college have compiled from Nicholas' lifetime of writing. Called The Silence at the Song's End the book attempts to fulfill Nicholas' goal which was "to write something I could show to people". I have not yet had a chance to read this book but I have no doubt that Nicholas achieved this goal many times over.

This poem is one which has been featured in extracts from the book and is so moving it makes my heart hurt, for him, for the sea, for the Nicholas of One Summer's Grace, the family and with hope that wherever Nicholas is now he is able to be singing and sailing through eternity. (Read Frieda Hughes' response to this poem in Monday's Times here)

"The morning runs

on, a springtime secret

through the avenues

and avenues which lure

all sound away

I sing, as I was taught

inside myself.

I sing inside myself

when wild moments

slice some tender evening

like a breeze

that rattles gravel

and digs in the dirt

I sing, as I was told,

inside myself.

I sing inside myself

the one wild song, song that whirls

my words around

until a world unfurls

my ship’s new sail

I catch the dew

and set a course amongst the ocean curls

The silence at the song’s end

Before the next

Is the world"

I bought two bunches of daffodils for the house; they are faring as well and as brightly as the ones that have started flowering on the verges. Spring is here, on Exmoor, briefly at least. I fear that the snow forecast for the hills and moors this weekend might put a stop to Spring, at least for a while. But it can't stop the lengthening evenings, nor the fact that it was just about light when I left work at 5pm on Friday. After the long winter nights, the lengthening daylight brings hope, new beginnings. And, all being well, new babies. I washed my first load of baby suits this afternoon, stacked the tiny pile in the airing cupboard, ready, if needed, to be transferred to a hospital bag. Or, I hope, transferred to a new flat. The tiny mitts getting ready to house the tiny hands that are currently poking away at my rib cage. But not too soon; I'm working for another 4 weeks, and then there's another 5 weeks until full term. 5 weeks which I need, to unpack two years of county living back into a London flat and to organise ourselves. By which time, it should well and truly be spring, even in London.

Valentines/anniversary cake

Although technically our anniversary is not until next weekend, and Valentines Day obviously not for a couple of weeks, this was husband and my last weekend on our own before either of those events. Usually I would bake a cake from one of my go to recipes but Baking Mad emailed me and asked me if I would try out their valentines cake. So, I thought, why not.

I won't list out all the ingredients here or the method, as you'll find that over at their site, but I thought you might like a few photos.

Notes:

I didn't have any heart shaped tins, so I made a thin flat cake in a Le Creuset dish, which I then used heart shaped cutters to cut out various sizes of hearts, some of which I double layered, some I left single.

As only husband and I were eating the cake, I halved all the ingredients for the actual cake and only used one egg. I also left out the milk. This, coupled with the way I cooked it, thin and flat, gave it a lovely almost brownie like texture, which was easier to cut out with a cutter.

I found I needed more icing sugar than they recommended for the icing sugar. I also omitted the type of chocolate they recommended, opting for 50g of melted dark chocolate, to 70g butter and probably 100g icing sugar. Just keep beating and tasting prior to adding the chocolate.

I used spreadable butter, which was all I had to hand. It seemed to work ok.

I served the cake with tea, to husband, who seemed very touched that I'd made him a cake.

I think I will repeat this recipe next time I serve a tea party, possibly using a slightly bigger cutter than the mini one but leaving them single layered with icing. A nice bite sized alternative to cupcakes, ideal I'm the heart shape if you were planning valentines cupcakes.

---

All photos by me, using my iPad. Which accounts for the poor quality of the snaps, but at least you get the idea.

---

This is a sponsored post.

Steel heart necklace (perfect for Valentines Day!)

Aren't these necklaces lovely.

This week was hard. But got better, ending with a lovely weekend alone with my Husband and Delilah, sitting in front of the fire and doing basically eff all. This afternoon we went to collect some nappies from freecycle, before having a rather lovely pub lunch (marred only slightly by a bunch of posh tw*ts who had booked seating for 20 and turned up an hour late, rahhing at everything) and then a short walk in the fading afternoon sunshine to Tarr Steps before driving back over the moor listening to Pink Floyd.

As you can see from the photo above, my body shape is changing. I've managed to keep my baby bump fairly well hidden until recently, but this week, I've not been able to get my coat done up all the way, and judging from my increased rib discomfort and heartburn, things are only set to get more uncomfortable. Less than three calender months until my due date though, so in no time at all it won't be rib discomfort keeping me awake...

Husband's best man and one of our closest friends has a birthday 2 days before mine. This was the scene of our joint 30th birthday party last weekend where 15 of our family and closest joint friends headed for a weekend of partying.

It was an amazing weekend. Two wonderful evening meals cooked by my husband and a team of sous-chefs, eaten with all 15 (18 with extra visitors one night) crammed round the dining table. One quieter meal on the Sunday night in the pub down the road over card games and dating apps on someone's phone. Two nights of partying until 5am. (Hence the renting of a self contained house in the middle of nowhere where as much noise can be made as needed and they welcome stag parties). A crisp but sunny walk across the surrounding fields. A laughter filled game of basketball to drive off the hangovers and an afternoon spent pottering in bath (most people drinking, me purchasing a black jumpsuit to wear for the evening party having decided that all maternity wear was too frumpy). Champagne.

An amazing weekend, which was over too quickly. All too soon, everyone else departed for London and I drove back to Somerset, collecting Delilah, us both sobbing all the way home from the cattery. I once thought the flatness after a weekend of partying was a hangover. I think it's more than that. That and pregnancy hormones.

---

And, if anyone is looking for a property that sleeps up to 16 for a hen party (or any other kind of party), I can highly recommend this place. Lots of bedrooms, lots of space, 2 lounges, plenty of bathrooms and hot water, plenty of outside space, decent well equipped kitchen - 2 dishwashers! - and separate dining room with a huge table. Just outside Bath so easy to get in for shopping and the spa, just off a main road so easy access but you can't hear it from inside and parking for about 10 cars. Decent manager who makes dealing with him easy and a pleasure. Email me if you want the details.

However, I am one for celebrating and to that end, when Theatre Breaks asked me to share their link to their website which helps you find romantic theatre breaks I thought one or two of you might find it useful. Who wouldn't want to have a Valentines theatre break in London organised and booked for them :)

The offers really aren't bad. I found two tickets to Legally Blonde with a night in a townhouse hotel in Kensington for £153. The seats are in the stalls and the hotel stay includes breakfast. When I was poking around on the website, I also found that you can pre-book supper at a nearby restaurant pre or post show at a very reasonable rate, although I can't vouch for the food that you'd receive.

Still, if you're looking for a Valentine's day break, or to celebrate for any other reason, it's got to be worth checking out to see what's available.
One of the ways that this is possible is by swapping some of my cups of tea and coffee each day for a herbal or green tea (which still contains caffeine but much less than coffee) . It was therefore fitting that Twinings contacted me to tell me about their new range of teas and to inform me of the benefits of drinking green tea. They say that "because they're a natural source of anti-oxidents", green tea "may help protect the body from damage caused by free radicals". Wikipedia also says that "studies suggest that green tea can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, dental cavities, kidney stones, and cancer, while improving bone density and cognitive function".

Got to be worth a try at least.

As birthdays inevitably do, 30 came and went before I'd really had a chance to be present. A day that started with presents over breakfast in bed, which continued by us hearing Pip's heartbeat at our 25 week antenatal appointment, included cupcakes made by my husband (which I am still getting compliments about at work), home made crispy duck pancakes for supper and then lunch out at a nice pub on Saturday.

My sister gave me a card which reads "29 forever". A fantastic card and one which I plan to frame, but, somehow, 30 actually feels right. I've dreaded it for so many months; hated the thought of getting old, leaving my youth behind. But actually, I'm pretty excited about the year ahead. A baby! Living with my husband again after 2 years! A new decade. New challenges.
I have gradually realised that anticipation is far worse than the actual event and, given that there is fuck all I can do about it, accept that it is inevitable and actually enjoy it.

As the clock turned midnight and 2012 arrived, I stood there with my husband, completely sober, for what must have been the first time since I turned 16, and realised that the year had come that I had dreamed about for years previous. You don't dream about turning 28, but, as a little girl, I often wondered what 30 might be like. And, I always thought and hoped I might have a baby at 30. And now here I am, on the eve of turning 30, 25 weeks pregnant.

Later on that evening, husband and I stood together in the quiet peace and quiet of north London, in the middle of the road, watching the fireworks go off across the whole of the city. They were at once right in front of us and yet, tiny in the distance. Which is exactly what life feels like at the moment.

To celebrate 30, we are heading to Bath next weekend with our family and some of our closest friends, for a joint celebration with husband's best man, who was 30 yesterday. We have, for the past 8 years, had joint parties. In expensive cocktail bars in west London, overpriced nightclubs in Notting Hill (25), dinners, house parties and with various themes, mostly fuelled by large amounts of alcohol. Turns out getting pregnant in July didn't help us with achieving all that was on our list. However, getting pregnant has been on our list since way before 2011 started, just not publicly, so regardless, we are thrilled.

waste less food

A definite success. We planned better, used leftovers more often and generally took more care with food.

install and use a compost bin

Yes. Albeit it's the one that the council provided so happily they come and take it away every week, which makes it an easier proposition.

finally finish de-cluttering

We've made a lot of progress with this but I wouldn't say we've "finally finished". Something to complete before Pip comes along.

only beautiful things

Definitely. Especially Delilah.

see our friends (in London) at least once a month

We were doing pretty well at this until July, whereon I just wanted to hibernate. Something to improve on next year for sure.

go skiing

We abandoned in favour of a trip to Paris. Which was amazing.

go to Noma

No. Although, the trip was planned, it just had to be abandoned.

eat lunch at the Ledbury together

Planned but traded in favour of shopping!

stop buying bread and take-away lunches

Sporadic success. Definitely room for improvement.

go to more gigs - locate local music scene

Husband has been fairly successful. I have been less able being away from London mid week.

read, finish and discuss at least one "proper" book every month

Hhhmm. I've read more but not sure they are what I meant by "proper" books.

----

Coming next, looking back over 2011 and then 12 for 2012.

Saturday morning

This morning we woke up early and I made my first breakfast and a cup of tea for Husband and we ate them snuggled up in bed. It was so cold that we put the electric blanket back on to warm up our toes. Delilah usually joins us upstairs once she has finished her breakfast, usually sitting on the windowsill to have a wash and then settling on the foot of the bed for a sleep. This morning, she couldn't believe her luck at how toasty the bed was and stretched right out in the warmth.

Christmas Wishlist

Trying to get back into blogging. I can't believe the last time I posted a 'just a minute' post was August. Then again, August was when life turned a bit crazy. Those of you who have been following me on twitter will already know this, but things have been quiet around here for good reason. Alright, not quiet, nigh on silent. In August I found out I was pregnant and we are expecting a baby in April.

Weeks 8-16 were pretty awful from a feeling disgusting and being sick point of view. It was all I could do to get through a working week, let alone do things like blog and see friends. We went on holiday and pretty much all I wanted to do was sleep, or lie down. That said, it was a great trip, and good timing in that it was weeks 8-10 so I could sleep as much as I needed.

I'm now almost at the end of week 21. We've had two successful scans and I'm starting to feel the baby move. For those that are interested in that kind of thing, I've been writing more candidly about the baby and impending motherhood at a new space called Pip. Come over and say hello!

And for those that aren't - don't worry, I will be posting only limited baby things here and aim to be returning to my usual mix of vintage, shopping, weddings and general musings.

And now back to the post...

Reading... A great stack of pregnancy books, mostly loaned, gifted and bought on Amazon. Including The Happiest Baby on the Block, What to Expect When You're Expecting and Baby Names. However, now that we are safely past 20 weeks, I really should start reading something about birth. Unless my A Practical Wedding book arrives first, in which case, everything else can wait.
.
Watching... Pan Am. I've thoroughly enjoyed this light hearted period drama from the American 60s following the stories of 4 Pan American flight attendances. I was so shocked at the racism though; I cannot believe that the world was actually like that. And, of course, I have been following Strictly Come Dancing. What is there not to like - dancing and sparkles.
.
Listening... To soothing choral music. Mixed with a good dose of Alice in Chains.
.
Buying... New clothes to suit my new shape, where possible non-maternity as I am really struggling to find stylish and interesting maternity clothes on a reasonable budget. A few bits and pieces for the baby, mostly from ebay.
.
Loving... Winter. The fact that Delilah has started sitting on the sofa next to me.
.
Wanting... To see my friends. More culture. Snow.
