It evolved into a slide show with a beautiful sound track, and now it’s a gently-moving video which we’ve just put online.

The story is based on a true event in the First Great Depression. It appears we are now in a Second Great Depression catalyzed by the COVID-19 pandemic. This gave us an opportunity to repeat that long-ago event.

In the story, the Christmas Tree Angel comes to the tree farm to announce that some trees will be taken to the city to bring joy to people there. A straggly little tree who yearns to be chosen is taken to the city.

Around winter solstice 2020 we cut eighteen small Douglas fir trees. Besides fulfilling this story, it continues our year spent thinning out thousands of small trees to reduce wildfire risk and improve forest health here at Lone Bobcat Woods.

Janaia’s sister Terry took the trees home to Tracy. She unloaded them for a brief stay outside a friend’s restaurant.

In the story, no one chooses the straggly little tree in the tree lot. She falls into deep despair. She is the only tree left on Christmas eve. But a woman enters the lot just as the man is about to close it. The woman cannot afford to buy a Christmas tree because her husband is ill. She persuades the tree lot owner to let her borrow the little tree for Christmas day.

In the story, the woman joyously carries the little tree home.

In Tracy, we trust that the little trees found their way into many homes.

This is Mom’s first live Christmas tree in many years.

My mother has done likewise. The ornaments reflect memories of Janaia’s family and Robin’s family in the 1950s, and several friends, some of whom are no longer alive except in our hearts.

In the story, the little tree brings great joy to the family on a Christmas day, just as the angel had promised. The family is blessed by generosity from friends and neighbors.

May that be true as well for those who received little fir trees from Lone Bobcat Woods in 2020.

And we extend that prayer to everyone everywhere.

May all beings have a warm, safe and treasured holiday, one that reminds them that they are loved, truly loved.

Hi friend,

When we first heard about it in 2016, we made a beeline to a New Tribe training with Bill and Zoe Alowan Kauth in Ashland, Oregon. Inspired, we immediately produced two Peak Moment shows with them: Longing to Belong: Looking for Your Tribe part 1 and part 2.

A year later we joined a newly-formed Tribe right here in Nevada City, co-championed by Rhonda and Peter Clark. Our Tribe of fourteen has been meeting weekly for three years. Our Tribe is not residential, but we live within a half-hour drive of one another in our rural region. Our Tribe is growing into a circle of friends who are committed to being there for one another for the duration. We’re building trust, close loving friendships, providing mutual support emotionally, physically, spiritually.

Tribe has made a huge difference for me. I feel more secure, knowing that Robin and I are being held in a social safety net. I know I can count on them if we need anything. They can count on us. That is priceless.

Nevada City Tribe at our fall 2018 retreat. Living together for a few days brings us even closer.

I think many of us long to belong to such a tribe, for the safety, support, caring and connection. In this emerging pandemic era, I think we need each other even more. I’d love to see dozens of Tribes in our local community alone. So, if this rings for you…

Collapsing Into Coronavirus: Because This Is Not A Drill

If your awareness of the collapse of civilization is years-old or just days-old, you may now feel overwhelmed with the reality of a global pandemic. You’re getting lots of information about mitigating the Coronavirus, but you’re not getting emotional and spiritual support. Quarantines and “social distancing” are separating us at a time when we need each other most.

March 28 and April 4

Hours: 9 AM, PST, 10 AM Mountain, 11 AM Central, Noon, EST

Cost: $50 for both sessions

This will be a rich opportunity to connect virtually with others and learn practical tools for navigating the stresses of this current global emergency and whatever lies beyond it.

Peak Moment Television, 2006-2018. It was a good run, and we feel honored and proud of our accomplishments. In 336 shows, we have interviewed many people, toured many places, been shown on many community-access TV stations, and inspired many viewers. All of the shows remain available to the public through our website and YouTube channel, and continue to receive comments. For this grand adventure, we thank you, our supporters, and the hundreds of people we had the good fortune to meet during that time.

Peak Moment TV Stars 2006-2018

We produced our last show in October 2018. A year ago. We are closing this chapter of Peak Moment TV in part because Robin’s short-term memory has declined significantly over the past five years. It’s no longer easy for her to edit, upload and archive the shows. She completed all the shows we had “in the can.” And as we ended our last recording journey in 2014, I (Janaia) felt complete, because we’d covered most of the topics I’d wanted to.

The Next Chapter. In 2015 we sold the parcel containing our off-grid house. We still own 120 acres of forest around that parcel. We moved the motorhome (in which we’ve lived and traveled since 2010) to an adjoining parcel. We put in a modest solar electric system, gravity-fed well water, and a shipping container for a garage plus storage. We thinned out thousands of (mostly small) trees on the slope at the near edge of the South Yuba River canyon.

We’re deepening our roots in our community, just as we suggested in many of our shows. In 2017 Robin was assessed as having Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), which can lead to Alzheimer’s (she has the genetic tendency for it). We’ve educated ourselves on this condition, and Robin uses diet and lifestyle to slow the progression and stay healthy. Blessedly she’s not in denial. We’ve written a letter to friends and family about our situation, which we’re happy to share with anyone (email Janaia). We want to reduce the stigma and fear about dementia by openly sharing our journey with it.

In 2016 we took the New Tribe Training with Bill Kauth and Zoe Alowan (Longing to Belong: Looking for Your Tribe? part 1 and part 2. Later that year friends here created a western Nevada County area New Tribe. We’re now two-year members of this group of fourteen who meet weekly, and are committed to being there for each another for the long term.

Robin is delighting in weekly conga drumming classes and occasional performances. We belong to the Yuba Spirit Threshold Singers, whose mission is to sing peaceful, simple songs in harmony for those who are dying, ill, or shut-in. Each month we sing at the hospital, and are rewarded with appreciative patients and staff who love hearing our music. Where else in our culture can one be sung to, personally, quietly, like a mother singing to her child?

I am caring for myself through mindfulness practice, a dementia caregiver’s support group, and a weekly women’s heart-sharing group. I’ve taken two five-day respite retreats in the past several months. This spring/summer, we erected a “room of my own” — a small building made of metal-clad styrofoam modules which we’ve dubbed the “Foam Palace.” I’ll use it for art-making and for having a solitary space to myself.

The Foam Palace (aka the Foam Booth)

Fifty years ago I read Edgar Cayce’s prophecy that California’s interior would be covered with water. I wondered then what might cause such a sea level rise. I never imagined that the cause, global warming, had already begun. Then, thirty years ago we were awakened to climate change through Bill McKibben’s book The End of Nature.

Fourteen years ago we learned of Peak Oil and the collapse of industrial civilization. I had hoped Peak Oil would hit the economy sufficiently to force the world to change trajectories. Although I am glad to finally see wider acceptance of abrupt climate change, I fear it is too late to mitigate most of its effects, which are already causing great losses. We must adapt as well as support creative people forging ways to live far more sustainably (like our Peak Moment guests).

Our local impacts now include hotter and drier weather in Northern California — and wildfires increasingly all around us. Our whole community was on fire-ready alert as summer’s dry weather extended unseasonably long into late November. Several grid power electricity shutoffs added to the stress for most of our community. Being off-grid, we were not directly affected — except for all gas stations being closed. It was resilience practice for a new normal.

For our adaptation, we are working to create defensible space along the half mile of roads in our 120 acres of forest land. We joined with our local Lake Vera Round Mountain Firewise Community to educate our neighbors and participate in a CalFire-initiated fire drill last June.

Last spring we attended a workshop from University of California Cooperative Extension on Prescribed Burns for Forest Landowners, and are helping to start a Yuba-Bear Burn Cooperative for landowners like ourselves who want to help each other, using intentional safe broadcast burns to reduce fuel loads and improve forest health.

Last June we conducted a tiny 0.2 acre “donut hole burn” on our land and learned a lot from the experience. We actually had to keep re-igniting to keep the fire burning! The day after Thanksgiving we burned three huge piles of logging slash bounded by snow.

Robin piling on more slash in our Snow Burn

What Next? We will keep the Peak Moment TV website up, and are glad that viewers continue to find our programs interesting and relevant.

From time to time I may share our news on the website, with thanks to those who continue to contribute financially. It seems our lives have taken the pendulum swing from public (activism like the Peak Moment TV era) to private (now). It seems a time to rest, consolidate, and just be with what each day brings. Even more, as Robin says, we exult in living with and in the natural forest community who have welcomed us here.

With gratitude,

Janaia and Robin

I’ve thought to write our news since last winter, but we were between stories. Now we’re solidly in the next story — personal and regional, if not planetary. As I write, smoke from the nearby “Camp Fire” fills our woods like fog, blotting out the sun. The fire easily could’ve been here. We’re in the midst of Climate change effects in the Sierra Nevada, just as described in 2006 by one of our first Peak Moment guests.

Our personal new story is that we’ve planted ourselves back in Nevada City and are building our network of friends. Longtime drummer Robin is taking conga drumming lessons, keeping her brain and hands active. Janaia meets weekly with a supportive group of women friends. As members of Yuba Spirit Threshold Singers, we are singing comforting songs at bedside for those dying, ill, or grieving. The music is heart-full, harmonic, comforting — for us as well as the client. (Janaia’s logo design at left)

We also meet weekly with the Nevada County “New Tribe,” whose members are committed to being there for one another for the rest of our lives. The “New Tribe” model was originated by Bill Kauth and Zoe Alowan, who we interviewed after taking their training in 2016: Longing to Belong: looking for your Tribe?

We’re erecting a metal RV shelter to keep rain and snow off our motorhome “tiny house” roof. We also continue doing woods-work to create defensible space along the roads on the 120 acres we are stewarding, especially as California wildfire season is nearly year-round now.

Robin’s memory is declining. It has become increasingly noticeable in the last few years, despite her work in the past decade with naturopaths and functional medicine doctors on autoimmunity, parasites, hormonal imbalance, removal of heavy metals, and reducing inflammation. In 2017 she was diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in the area of memory. Last spring a brain MRI showed “significant atrophy” in both hippocampi, where memory is stored. This month she begins working with a physician exclusively dedicated to implementing Dr. Dale Bredesen’s protocol, as documented in The End of Alzheimer’s: The First Program to Reverse and Prevent Cognitive Decline.

This has changed everything. As well as adapting to minute-by-minute situations, Janaia has taken on more tasks, with increasing fatigue and stress. That’s why we’re building our network at home. We do not have children for backup care as we age. We need a community for mutual and individual support in the coming years.

All of this local activity — investing in the present for the future — has meant less time is available for Peak Moment TV production. We published two Peak Moment episodes in 2018 (rather than an average of 22 several years ago). But we’re not considering that it’s “The End.” Several more shows “in the can” are waiting to be produced. We will record new shows as opportunities arise, such as a recent interview with Stephen Jenkinson about his new book Come of Age: The Case for Elderhood in a Time of Trouble (forthcoming).

We treasure your support, now and throughout the lifetime of Peak Moment TV. We’re proud and grateful to be of service at this critical time in Earth’s history. Viewers tell us we’ve helped them change their lives for the better, and we’ve spread important ideas, like locally-reliant living. Now that we’re deepening our community ties, we are more locally-reliant as well.

Warmly, Janaia and Robin

“I don’t know if you can teach creativity…it’s some connection within ourselves,” says Mark Mendonca. “Wherever those ideas come from, it’s not taught. So you have to allow it. That’s our philosophy in terms of their education: finding their interests and allowing these things to happen… I know that when I watch a child, they’re incredibly curious, creative…” As performing artists themselves, dancers Veronica and Mark exemplify the unteachable magic of creativity. Wanting to nurture this in twins Kaoli and Maceo, they decided to homeschool rather than pressure them with the stresses of school. How has the twins’ creativity been expressed? We’ve included their 2013 video “Summer” (all their own music, lyrics, acting, dance, and videography). Where has it evolved? Maceo’s 2018 video “Quick” is one example. Enjoy!

She discusses seed saving, and storing enough seeds so everyone in your neighborhood can be gardening if need be. She’s a big fan of growing potatoes and squash to extend each season’s food, plus beans and corn for long-term storage. Carol is breeding seeds with resilience for unpredictable conditions, including open source seeds which anybody can use as they wish without patent restrictions. [caroldeppe.com, osseeds.org].

Here we are at a year’s end and, once again, we join the chorus of voices asking for contributions. The call for generosity across the board is deep, especially here in the United States where the needs of ordinary people are being systematically denied, and environmental protections denied in favor of the corporations, who currently run our country. If your contributions can include Peak Moment Television, we are especially grateful. Peak Moment shines the light on ordinary people doing what they can for Life, which can feel small next to the gigantic needs and losses elsewhere.

It has been a stay-at-home year for us. A deep inhale. A diagnosis of Mild Cognitive Impairment in the area of short-term memory for Robin sent us both on a learning journey. Together we took a class for early-Alzheimer’s people and their care partners. Janaia took an extensive 12-week course for caregivers. Robin’s functional medicine doctor is following the protocol described in Dr. Dale Bredesen’s book, The End of Alzheimer’s, and is focusing once again on Robin’s lyme and co-infections. Janaia continues recovering from adrenal fatigue after the exhausting move out of our homestead in 2015. We have slowed our production of Peak Moment shows to “occasional,” although aiming for every 3-4 weeks.

Wanting to expand our ties to the human community, we have just joined the Western Nevada County Tribe as provisional members. It is a “New Tribe” developed by Bill Kauth and Zoe Alowan whose training we took in 2016 (watch Longing to Belong: Looking for Your Tribe? part 1, episode 308). Robin has resumed drumming classes from over a decade a good (great for memory).

Finally, living at our humble place at Lone Bobcat Woods continues to feed our souls and connect us to Earth, recharging our batteries and bringing wonder in our being alive at this moment, this Peak Moment, witnessing enormous changes on the planet.

With warm wishes and gratitude,
Janaia & Robin

Let’s go to the soil.” The soils in his Oregon high-mountain ranch are rich in minerals, producing grasses with higher protein to nourish his pastured animals, producing hardier offspring, and healthier meats for our eating. Alan raises bison (buffalo) and yaks, and has raised Bighorn Dall sheep, geese, heritage turkeys, chickens, ducks and geese. Join him on a tour through the paddocks where he raises native, heritage and indigenous species which are chosen for the colder climate. “We’ve pretty much copied nature,” he says. Periodically rotated into fresh paddocks, the big animals’ hooves till the earth while they graze, and their manure refertilizes the soil. Later, turkeys or other birds follow, eating bugs from the manure. Continuous cycles of depletion and restoration, as nature does it. [pmrbuffalo.com]
