Jack O’Connell: A Rising Star

The young 'Skins' star is running towards stardom after being cast in Angelina Jolie's 'Unbroken'.

I think one of the most impressive and surprising performances I saw last year came from Jack O’Connell in British prison drama Starred Up. Throughout the film I thought to myself ‘I know that guy…’ but I couldn’t figure out where from. After a quick IMDb after the film I thought ‘of course, I know him from skins!’.

Like many aspiring British actors (and even Russell Brand) Jack appeard in the TV series The Bill, as well as Holby City and Waterloo Road. That was before landing the part of James Cook in Skins, which was a huge hit and gave his talent the exposure it deserved and opened up a lot of doors for him. The subsequent film roles he was getting mainly consisted of gritty cockney thugs (Harry Brown, The Liability), roles that actor and rapper Plan B has become known for in recent years, however, with the talent Jack has it would have been a shame to see him get typecasted into this kind of role. He seems aware of this potential typecast "I like to be versatile as an actor, that's the intention… I'm very conscious of potential typecasting” and his performances in United, Starred Up and 300: Rise of An Empire showed that he is a very diverse actor with many tricks up his sleeve.

One of the films I’m really looking forward to this year is ’71, a film about a British soldier that is accidently abandoned following a riot in Belfast 1971, Jack plays the said soldier, and it looks absolutely brilliant.

The big news is that he seems to have his foot well and truly in the Hollywood door as he stars in Unbroken, a film directed by Angelina Jolie. If Skins opened up the doors for Jack, then this is going to blow the door off the hinges! The film is about the life of Louis Zamperini, an Olympic runner who was taken prisoner by Japanese forces during World War II.

From what I’ve seen from Jack so far I think he could play any role he likes, under Angelina Jolie or any other big name, he is one of the most exciting actors out there at the moment.

Steve Carell has had a brilliant career so far, starring in some of the most popular comedies in recent times such a Despicable Me, Anchorman, 40 Year Old Virgin and Bruce Almighty. His performances are popcorn chokingly funny, who can forget Anchorman’s Brick confessing his love for lamp or the newsroom scene in Bruce Almighty. As funny as these characters are, you wouldn’t describe them as ground breaking performances worthy of critical recognition.

Carell has shown a glimpse of a more serious and emotional side in a handful of films, such as Crazy, Stupid, Love. where he has to cope with his wife asking for a divorce, and trying to date again – although this is a comedy there are moments of serious emotion as he tries to drag himself out of the dumps. In one of my favourite films of last year The Way Way Back he plays a nasty cheating step-dad, you feel a genuine hatred for his character as he puts down his painfully shy step-son Duncan calling him a 3 out of 10; being able to create such an unlikable character after playing such loveable characters such as Andy from 40 year old virgin is very impressive. He also steals the show in Little Miss Sunshine where he plays the depressed and suicidal Frank. These roles show he is a much more diverse and talented actor than people give him credit for.

After those glimpses of a more serious role he is now about to show us the full thing in his upcoming film Foxcatcher which sees him play wrestling sponsor, multimillionaire and paranoid schizophrenic John DuPont. It seemed a very random casting decision from director Bennett Miller, who admitted he only considered Carell after a lunch with him, and quoting “I think all comedians are dark”. I think Miller is right; there are many comic actors that are perceived in a benign way, who do actually have a more serious dark side. The best example of this is the late Robin Williams; his serious and darker roles were played brilliantly, in particular Good Will Hunting and One Hour Photo.
So far we only have the trailers and hearsay to go by, but many people are now lining him up to win an Oscar… Here is the trailer, comment and share your thoughts, does it look like an Oscar worthy performance?

Sex Tape Review

Annie and Jay try to spice up their marriage in this laugh out loud comedy.

If you go to see a movie called Sex Tape you pretty much know what you're in for, and this doesn't disappoint with the first risqué scene about 30 seconds in. Don't worry though, the film has its tongue firmly in cheek and most of these sequences play for laughs by looking as awkward as possible.
Cameron Diaz stars as Annie who is married to Jay, played by Jason Segel. The couple have been together since college but with the arrival of two kids their sex life has taken a hit, something neither of them is happy about. When Annie gets a big job offer she decides the celebration can double up as a chance to get their love life back on track - cue several scenes of toe-curlingly embarrassing attempts to reignite the spark. "I'm so glad I mopped yesterday," breathes Annie as the pair try to spice things up on the kitchen floor.

Realising the night isn't the success she'd hoped, Annie hits on the idea of making a sex tape. And not just any sex tape, this one will see the pair trying every position in The Joy of Sex. The plan goes with a bang, the couple feel closer than ever and all is right with the world... for a while. Until Jay gets a mysterious text and realises that he's accidentally shared the intimate video with pretty much everyone the couple know. Predictably this doesn't go down well with Annie, with the rest of the movie following the pair as they go to extreme lengths to ensure no one sees them in the throes of passion.

The stars of a film called Sex Tape had better have chemistry, and luckily Cameron and Jason do. Both have admitted wanting to one-up the other in the cringey love scenes, and the results mean a lot of belly laughs for the audience. Their interaction as a family also gets top marks - what's not to love about little daughter Nell (Giselle Eisenberg) asking her harassed dad about the meaning of life? "But won't I get bored of doing stuff again and again?" she asks the guy who can't help comparing his married love life to that of his sex text-boasting friend.

Cameron and Jason play for laughs a lot in this, sometimes more successfully than others. There are moments which are so close to the bone you can't help laughing, but others which seemed a bit over worked. The pair coming up with implausible reasons for being in someone's home felt tired, although on the flip side not many other flicks have a full-on fight between a man and a dog.
The child stars steal the show in this one, with Harrison Holzer brilliant as the two-faced Howard. Watch out for a few star cameos too, but don't expect a film which has reinvented the wheel.

The undying allure of film noir and why it’s still relevant today

With the release of Sin City: A Dame To Kill For, film noir is a style of filmmaking that seems appropriate to discuss at the moment. Films that are cold, shadowy, cynical and pessimistic don’t sit well with the (mostly) glorious late-summer weather we’ve been enjoying over the past few weeks. The wider world, though, seems to be in the midst of a period of perpetual gloom and unrest. Military tensions and conflicts on a global scale combined with continued economic unrest and domestic violence committed by police against citizens (in America especially) in fact add up to reflect the original conditions that led to the film noir movement quite well.

Film noir was borne out of a sense of fatalism and despair in the wake of World War II and the Great Depression. It had begun to creep in just before the United States entered the conflict in the form of darker crime films, but with studios largely charged by the Roosevelt administration to produce positive propaganda work, film noir didn’t come into its own until the late 1940s, though several precursors, such as The Maltese Falcon, were released earlier in the decade. Audiences flocked to see the films that spoke so effectively to what they were feeling – masculinity crises, major social changes, a postwar consumerist explosion, for example – and directors and writers relished the opportunity to test the limits of the Hays Code that dictated what could and couldn’t be shown and said in Hollywood.

Stylistically, film noir is a hodge-podge of elements from the German Expressionist efforts of the 1920s (especially in terms of its cinematography), 1940s Italian neo-realism and hard-boiled pulp fiction from the pens of writers like James M. Cain and Raymond Chandler. Its tropes are well-known and have been picked over more than enough times for them not to need examination here – any casual noir fan knows about weak-willed men and femmes fatale, black humour, chiaroscuro lighting, voiceover narration, crime and cops, convoluted plots. Classic Forties examples of the genre, some of which will be discussed later, include Gilda, Double Indemnity (penned by Chandler from Cain’s short story), The Big Sleep (adapted from Chandler’s story about quintessential private eye Philip Marlowe) and The Postman Only Rings Twice, before the Fifties arrived with Kiss Me Deadly, Touch Of Evil and The Big Heat. Stars like Robert Mitchum, Barbara Stanwyck, Humphrey Bogart, the recently late, great Lauren Bacall, Lana Turner and Rita Hayworth are inextricably linked with the genre, while the likes of Billy Wilder, Orson Welles, Howard Hawks and Fritz Lang produced some of their best work under the noir banner.

Eventually, colour movies came in, social attitudes became less cynical and the world moved on, but noir’s influence is still felt. Pure noirs produced since the style’s classic age have included Roman Polanski’s Chinatown and Brian Helgeland’s LA Confidential, while Blade Runner, Blue Velvet and The Usual Suspects are just three of the films that display noir tropes. This week, audiences will be flocking to see Sin City: A Dame To Kill For, a movie filled with deadly women, hard-boiled dialogue, a monochrome look and an intertwining series of tales about loose morals and itchy trigger fingers that boasts the style of noir but doesn’t quite get to grips with its substance. Noir survives, often in a diluted form, but we still revisit it when we have the opportunity. Perhaps it’s because the humanity is never represented as honestly and imperfectly as it is in noir. What man can watch Fred MacMurray fall under the spell of Barbara Stanwyck in Double Indemnity and not think about a woman he might commit murder for under the right circumstances? Noir taps into our inherent anxieties and insecurities and feeds our darker desires, like greed and lust. With noir, we don’t have to shrink from the light because we’re safe in the shadows, and we can deal with whatever comes at us there.

What is noir? It’s a style, and a mood that is going to keep returning and colouring and exposing our perception of the world and of ourselves as long as corruption, crime, terror and paranoia run rampant and unchecked throughout the globe. It will continue to manifest in cinema, and in every other form of art, and we will continue to stare into its dark eyes and wonder about ourselves.

Seven noirs to watch today

Double Indemnity

From the moment that Barbara Stanwyck enters, ankle bracelet first, Fred MacMurray and the audience are hooked on a intoxicating cocktail of seduction, murder and innuendo-filled dialogue that makes Double Indemnity the archetypal film noir. Drink it all in – there is no better pure noir, certainly not from the style’s classic period, to be found anywhere.

The Big Sleep

The plot of The Big Sleep was so notoriously complicated that, when asked who had killed a chauffeur, even source novel author Raymond Chandler didn’t know. The teaming of real-life couple Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall gives the film an irresistible crackle of romantic chemistry (to the point that scenes specifically featuring the two of them were added to the film after it was finished) even as the bodies pile up around them.

The Third Man

Noir was not confined to the back alleys and bars of America – many fine movies, such as The Third Man, were created outside of the Hollywood studio system. Set in post-war Vienna and featuring a screenplay by novelist Graham Greene, this British noir predominantly features a pulp fiction writer (Joseph Cotten) looking for his friend, played by Orson Welles, who is widely believed to be dead. Of course, he turns up, and the plot swerves off on a new tangent. The exhausted cynicism of a city devastated by war is masterfully observed, and every aspect of the film is flawless.

Out Of The Past

With twists and double-crosses galore, Out Of The Past is, perhaps, slightly underrated compared to the other films on this list, but no less effective – in it, Jane Greer is the definition of a femme fatale, twisting both Robert Mitchum and Kirk Douglas around her little finger so many times it’s a wonder they don’t snap long before they do. Mitchum is superb as the former private eye trying and failing to leave his old life behind, and Douglas offers a very early indicator (in only his second screen role) of his own talent as Mitchum’s gangster nemesis.

Chinatown

Noir is often bleak, but it’s seldom as bleak as it is in Chinatown. To say any more would be to give too much away, but a plot that might have seemed ridiculous is given credibility by the towering performances of Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway and John Huston. What starts off as a ho-hum private-eye-investigates-possible-affair film quickly becomes, in the tradition of hardboiled crime fiction, much more, and what results is one of the best films of any genre, let alone crime or noir.

LA Confidential

Adapted from the novel of the same name by James Ellroy, the finest of our contemporary noir authors, LA Confidential was by no means a surefire hit – its biggest stars were Kevin Spacey and Danny DeVito, with two of the three protagonists played by then-unknowns Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce. The spirit of the film right from DeVito’s stunning, scene-setting opening monologue is dirty, sordid and violent, and like all the best noirs you need to keep your brain switched on to follow the plot.

Brick

You’ll be hearing a lot about Rian Johnson (assuming you haven’t already seen this film, The Brothers Bloom or last year’s Looper) because he’s been tapped to write and direct Episodes VIII and IX of the Star Wars franchise, but he burst onto the scene with this cool, original noir set in a modern-day California high school. Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Brick was filmed on a shoestring budget, but proves that, with ingenuity and an outstanding script, the spirit of noir continues to burn, like one cigarette and Scotch too many, in the hearts of directors around the world.

Robert De Niro: Top 5 Quotes

This week it was Robert De Niro’s 71st birthday, and as I was scrawling through Tumblr GIFs and YouTube clips of his most memorable quotes I was reminded of the astounding number of them, all encapsulating iconic characters and films created by the little genius. In this blog post I attempt to whittle these cinematic gems into a top 5, I know you will probably disagree with me, but hey, you think you could do better wise guy?

5. Raging Bull (1980) “Bodder me abott a steak? Huh?”

I remember when I first watched Raging Bull, I was struck by the gritty realness of the arguments (of which there are many!) which is something I hadn’t experienced much growing up watching the latest Tom Cruise Hollywood blockbusters. The scene where Irma under cooks the steak sticks in my mind, you can feel the adrenaline, anger and fear as if you were in the room with them.

4. Meet the Parents (2000) “I have nipples, Greg, could you milk me?”

After watching a masterpiece such as Raging Bull you would never in a million years have imagined he would be asking Ben Stiller if he could milk him like a cat. This is why I love this quote so much, it epitomises his diversity and ability to switch to comedy without a flicker of doubt or insecurity as many other ‘proper’ actors might do.

3. Mean Streets (1973) “You too good for this ten dollars? It's a good ten dollars.”

This was the first collaboration between De Niro and Scorsese and it was a career changing performance which paved the way for roles in Godfather II and Taxi Driver. He plays Johnny Boy, an unpredictable troublemaker obsessed with money – and he doesn’t mind blagging to get it! His elaborate and whimsical tales of why he can’t pay back a loan shark comes to a head in this brilliant scene between Johnny Boy and said loan shark Michael.

2. Taxi Driver "You Talkin' To Me?"

I don’t trust anyone who claims they haven’t said this to themselves in the mirror, everybody has! This has to be the most iconic film & quote of De Niro’s, and it is executed perfectly. If you want proof of how well he acts this scene you only have to look at Mr 50 Cents attempt in Get Rich or Die Trying and compare.

1. Goodfellas (1990) “Look at me, never rat on your friends and always keep your mouth shut.”

Yes, I am biased as this is probably one of my favourite films and characters of all time, but Jimmy Conway’s quotes are delivered sharper than Joe Pesci’s machete in the opening scene. Watch it here

Well there it is, my favourite De Niro quotes from his extensive repertoire so far, let's hope he will treat us to many more golden cinematic moments - i have my fingers crossed for Hands of Stone where De Niro plays the legendary boxing trainer Ray Arcel.

Most Embarrassing On-Screen Parents

THE GUILT TRIP, which hits the UK cinemas on the 8th March, follows struggling inventor Andy Brewster (Seth Rogen), who make a rash decision to bring his mother, Joyce (Barbra Streisand) on a road trip across the US. Across 3,000 miles of ever-changing landscape, he is constantly aggravated by her antics, but over time he comes to realize that their lives have more in common than he originally thought.

We love a good embarrassing parent to make you appreciate what you've got (or not as the case may be!). We decided to take a look at some of our favourites in films to see how bad Andy actually has it.

Rose and Bernie Focker in MEET THE FOCKERS
Barbra Streisand clearly has a knack at playing an embarrassing mother, as she also appears in this cult hit comedy from 2004. After suffering the humiliation of being given the third degree by his girlfriend's father, Greg Focker (Ben Stiller) now faces the even more embarrassing task of introducing his in-laws and future wife to his hippie parents.

Jim’s dad in AMERICAN PIE films
Whether it’s being caught with his privates in his mother’s apple pie or a porno super glued to his hand, Jim’s father is very understanding and always ready to offer some cringe-worthy advice. Eugene Levy, who played Jim's father in the film, became a cult hit favourite in this role, and even got a film of his own. Like we said, people can’t get enough of embarrassing parents!

Mrs George in MEAN GIRLS
Mrs George certainly earns her spot in this list. Why? Maybe because she calls herself a “cool mum” and insists that she’s one of the girls even though her daughter clearly does not want have anything to do with her! Also the fact that she has had a boob job and now has knockers as hard as rocks doesn't help!
