On the internet, there are a number of ways to capture, or record streaming video. One of the simplest ways is through getting a software program that will allow the individual to record the streaming video of the individual’s choice over the internet. In some other cases, there will be an option to download the streaming video. Another option is that the hyperlink for the streaming video will be offered, and this link can be posted or imbedded in other areas to make the streaming video more accessible in a certain area. Many people will add a video to their blogging site in order to access certain videos with more ease.

However, the internet is not the only forum through which streaming video is offered. One of the first venues to offer streaming video was the television. Television channels are also offering streaming video at virtually all times. Channels and stations are perpetually broadcasting, waiting to be picked up by the consumers. When it comes to capturing this type of streaming video, many people are actually very prepared with the process. By setting up a video cassette recorder, an individual is able to record the video that is streaming into their TV and capture it on the video cassette that is in their VCR. As the technology of the time progressed, it also became possible to record onto a disc.

Many DVD players will now allow the individual to capture the video and burn it on to the disc. In both of these cases, it is possible to then transfer the captured video over that medium, either the cassette or the disc. Capturing streaming video is very important to many people because it allows them to transfer information and save different types of information in a very simple and convenient way. In order for our society to grow and develop, it is very important that we are able to share information between ourselves and through capturing streaming video we are able to do just that in many ways, which makes it more effective as a way of sharing ideas as well. Information through streaming video can be captured by news stations and individuals, and can be used for personal and professional reasons.

Colorful choices in colored Gemstones: The big three; Emerald, Ruby, and Sapphire II

Colorful choices in colored Gemstones

Other popular colored gems

- Bloodstone (Heliotrope)

Bloodstone (Heliotrope) believed by the ancient Greeks to have fallen from heaven, this gemstone has held a prominent place throughout history, and even into modern times, as a great curative. It was (and still is in some parts of the world) believed capable of stopping every type of bleeding, clearing bloodshot eyes, acting as an antidote for snakebite, and relieving urinary troubles. Today there are people who wear blood stone amulets to prevent sunstroke and headache, and to provide protection against the evil eye.

The birthstone for March, bloodstone is a more or less opaque, dark green variety of quartz with specks of red jasper (a variety of quartz) spattering red throughout the dark green field. Particularly popular for men’s rings (perhaps they need more protection from illness?) bloodstone is most desirable when the green isn’t so dark as to approach black and the red flecks are roundish and pronounced. It is moderately durable and is fairly readily available and inexpensive.

- Chrysoberyl and Cat’s eye

The chrysoberl family is very interesting because all three of its varieties; alexandrite, cat’s eye, and chrysoberyl; while chemically alike, are quite distinct from one another in their optical characteristics and bear no visible resemblance to each other.

Chrysoberyl in its cat’s eye variety has long been used as a charm to guard against evil spirits, and one can understand why, given the pronounced eye effect; the eye, so legend has it, could see all and it watched out for its wearer. But it was also believed that to dream of cat’s eye signified treachery. On still another level, it symbolized long life for the wearer, perhaps as a result of being protected from the evil eye.

Cat’s eye is a hard, translucent gem ranging in color from a honey yellow or honey brown to yellowish green to an almost emerald green. It has a velvety or silk like texture, and when properly cut displays a brilliant whitish line of light right down the center, appearing almost to be lighted from inside. Genuine cat’s eye gemstone should not be confused with the common quartz variety, which is often brown, and called tiger eye; the latter has a much less striking eye and weaker color altogether. This phenomenon is produced only in cabochon (cabs).

To see the effect properly, the stone should be viewed under a single light source, coming if possible from directly overhead. If the line is not exactly in the center, the stone’s value is reduced. The lines does shift from side when the stone is moved about; probably another reason ancient people believed it capable of seeing all and guarding its wearer.

The stone called chrysoberyl, on the other hand, is a brilliant, transparent, very clear, and very durable stone found in yellow, yellow green, and green varieties. This is another stone that still offers excellent value. It’s a real beauty, very moderately priced, and just beginning to be appreciated and used in contemporary jewelry.

- Chrysoprase and Carnelian

Chrysoprase has long been the subject of marvelous stories. In the 1800s, it was believed that a thief sentenced to be hanged or beheaded would immediately escape if he placed a chrysoprase in is mouth. Of course, it might be hard to obtain the stone unless he just happened to carry one around! And Alexander the great was believed to have worn a “parse” in his girdle during battle, to ensure victory.

Chrysoprase is an inexpensive, highly translucent, bright, light to dark green variety of quartz. While its color is often very uniform and can be very lovely in jewelry, for many years these gems have been dyed to enhance their color, where necessary. Chrysoprase is another gemstone that is usually cut in cabochon style. It has become very popular for jewelry as a fashion accessory. Do not confuse it with jade, however. It is sometimes called “Australian Jade” and is sometimes misrepresented as real jade.
If you are the timid sort, carnelian is the stone for you. “The wearing of carnelian is recommended to those who have a weak voice or are timid in speech, for the warm colored stone will give them the courage they lack so that they will speak both boldly and well,” a turn of the century gemologist and historian.

This gemstone is especially revered by Moslems, because Muhammad himself wore a silver ring set with a carnelian engraved for use as a seal.
Napoleon I, while on a campaign in Egypt, picked up with his own hands (apparently from the battlefield) an unusual octagonal carnelian, upon which engraved the legend, “The slave Abraham relying Upon The Merciful[God}.” He wore it with him always and bequeathed it to his nephew.
Carnelian, one of the accepted birthstones for august, is a reddish orange variety of quartz. A moderately hard, translucent to opaque stone, its warm uniform color and fair durability have made it a favorite. It is often found in antique jewelry and lends itself to engraving or carving (especially in cameos). It is still a relatively inexpensive gemstone with great warmth and beauty and offers an excellent choice for jewelry to be worn as an accessory with today’s fashion colors.

The article above can be used on your web site or newsletter.

When it is published, May I request that you include my name and resource box (the bio., contact and copyright information that follows the article. In fact, this is one of the most expensive pieces of jewelry that you will be buying in your lifetime. Because of this, there are a lot of people out there who would take advantage and try to sell you a diamond that is not really a diamond.

With the creation of the zirconia, a diamond that looks and feels like a diamond but is not really a diamond, telling the fake from the real is all the more harder. It is important then to be very careful in buying diamond rings. If you feel that you are not buying your money’s worth, do not buy. It is better to err on the side of caution, as they say. Below are some tips that will help you to avoid buying fake diamond rings.

1. Know what you are buying

Research on diamond rings and make sure that you know enough before you set out to buy one. Buying something that you do not have an idea about is a sure recipe for disaster. So don’t attempt to. If you must really buy and don’t have the time to ask around, bring someone who know a little about diamond rings or better yet someone who have already bought one. Chances are, that person will be able to help you in your search.

2. Buy in reputable stores

If you do not know how to spot the real from the fake then only go to stores that you know will not sell fakes. These are the stores that are located in malls or those who have already been in the jewelry business for decades and therefore would not do anything to sully their names. Although these places may offer much higher prices, at least you are assured that what you are buying is real and worth every cent of your hard-earned money.

3. Ask for certificate

Reputable stores give certificates of authenticity to its customers. Ask for one when you buy. This will serve as your insurance just in case the jewelry that you bought turned out to be a fake. It is also a good idea to ask the store if the issue certificate of authenticity before you actually shop in that store. Certificates of authenticity is very important especially if you really want to hold on to a document stating that what you are buying is worth it.

About the Author:

This content is provided by Low Jeremy. The lush green landscape is used synonymously with an Emerald to tell people of its beautiful Green Color.

Egypt was the major source for Emeralds until the 16th Century, then the Spanish heard of the Emerald mines in South America. The Incas gave offerings of Emeralds to their gods, and tried to keep the mines a secret from the Spanish invaders. However, the Spanish did locate these mines and ship these rare and beautiful gemstones back to Europe. Today it is still one of the most desired of the green gemstones in the world, and flawless Emeralds can sometimes commend higher prices than flawless diamonds.

So what does impact the value of an Emerald? Color and Clarity are two of most important factors when looking at an Emerald.

Color. The most prized color for Emerald is a bluish Green to Green, with a strong Saturation and medium tone. Emeralds are a variety of Beryl; there are many other different varieties of Green Beryl that sometimes are called Emeralds incorrectly. A seller who is a gemologist will be able to make sure that you are purchasing an Emerald and not Green Beryl. Below are some of the trade terms you will hear when you are looking for an Emerald, as with all trade terms they are either over used or sometimes incorrectly used.

The term Columbian is used to describe the most valuable and rare color of Emerald, bluish green to green with strong or vivid saturation.

The term Zambian is used to describe Emeralds that have a darker and more bluish color than Columbian and usually have a greater clarity.

The term Sandawana is used to describe smaller brighter intense green Emeralds that originate in the Sandawana district.

The term Brazilian is used for Emeralds that are lighter in color and have a low saturation; you will see a lot of these available in jewelry stores.

The above terms can only be used as a guideline as it is possible to find higher quality Emeralds in Brazil or any of the other locations, however they are not as readily available in the quantity and quality of the Emeralds from Columbia. In your quest for your Emerald you might find your seller calling a bluish Green Emerald that comes from Brazil, a Columbian Emerald and that is incorrect.

Clarity in Emeralds have a greater propensity for inclusion than a lot of other gemstones that are sold or made into Jewelry, and flawless Emeralds are very rare and expensive. So do not be concerned if you are being shown Emeralds with inclusions, as they are very common. It is important that the inclusions in the Emerald you are looking at does not distract from its beauty to you. The industry and gemologists use the following clarity terms for Emerald inclusions; Slightly, Moderately or Heavily Included, these levels of inclusions characteristics can be best described as following

Lightly Include, Noticeable inclusions that are apparent to the unaided eye.

Moderately Included, Obvious inclusions very apparent to the unaided eye

Heavily Include, Obvious and can have a negative effect on the appearance and durability

Treatments. It is important that you are aware of the treatments any gemstone has, but in particular Emeralds as they often have fracture filling or dying to make them more pleasing to the eye of the customer. In 1997, the Dateline TV Show produced a segment of their show on how established jewellers were selling fracture filled Emeralds to clients and not disclosing any treatments. Some of the confusion was due to jewellers not being gemologists and taking the word of their suppliers other times it was a case of the selling not disclosing the facts to the buyer. Since that time we have seen a greater push by regulators to have sellers fully disclose treatments.

Fracture Filling is the most common treatment used on Emeralds and is achieved by using various oils in the fractures that reach the surface of the gemstone. Another method is to use resins, which are a more permanent way of filling fractures compared to oils that can evaporate or change color over time.

A seller who is a gemologist will be able to identify treatments to Emeralds for you. The majority of sellers will inform you of any treatment based on their knowledge, if your seller is a gemologist then you know they have the training and skill to be able to identify such treatments.

Emeralds will still be one of the most desired gemstones available today, and with the information above you will be able to make a better decision on who you purchase your Emerald from, what treatments it might have and know where the most valuable emeralds come from.

Please visit us at Jewels by Truros

Derek Parnell is a Graduate Gemologist (GIA) and can be contacted at Jewels by Truros a division of Truros Corporation.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Derek_Parnell

You Can Afford The Perfect Diamond Engagement Ring

You Can Afford The Perfect Diamond Engagement Ring

You don’t need to spend a fortune buying the perfect diamond engagement ring. Forget surprising her. Get real, tell her of your intentions and then shop for the engagement ring together. Look at buying the ring in the same way you would look at buying a house or car. Budget the amount you want to spend and then shop around until you find what you want for the price you are willing to pay. In the long run you will satisfy her and probable save a lot of time and money.

First do some homework. Since you will probable be looking for a diamond engagement ring learn the 4 C’s of diamonds; Cut, Clarity, Carat, and Color. Be realistic you will not be an expert just because you know the 4 C’s but at least you have a basic understanding of the subject when you speak with the jeweler about your purchase.

Next go to a local jewelry store where you can speak with a real person and ask more detailed questions. Armed with your basic knowledge of the 4 C’s this will be the most efficient way to learn more about the diamond engagement ring and the many choices of styles and ring materials available. Don’t forget the internet, you may be able to save a lot because an internet merchant may not have the overhead of a brick and mortar store and could past the savings on to you.

Then you should get a couple of quotes like you would for any other big purchase. You would not buy a car or car insurance without getting some quotes. Engagement rings are not unique you can get the same or very similar rings at more than one place. So shop around you should be able to get the ring of your choice very close to the price you want to pay. In any case when you finally decide on a ring, you know you did your homework, shopped around and got the best ring you could afford at the best possible price.

In the end make sure you are buying from a reputable merchant. Whether you decide to make your purchase online or at a local jewelry store, make sure you have some background on the store. Never buy a diamond engagement ring without getting a diamond certificate. A diamond certificate is a report created by a team of gemologists. The diamond is evaluated, measured, and scrutinized. Also get the ring appraised by another jeweler or appraisal company. An appraisal is a document stating the approximate retail replacement value of the ring. The appraisal document ensures that in the case of loss, theft, or damage your insurance company will give you an equal replacement of your diamond engagement ring. You will want to do this for your own peace of mind and you will need to do this if you want to insure the ring.

About the Author:

Patrick Ort, the author of this article, also publishes blogs on the subjects of Engagement Rings and Diamond Engagement Rings at http://engagement---ring.blogspot.com and http://diamond-engagement--ring.blogspot.com .

Read more articles by: Patrick Ort
Article Source: www.iSnare.com

Diamond Education and Guide: Emerald Shape Diamond

The emerald cut is not a brilliant cut, and it’s called a step cut. Step cuts are comprised of larger facets which act like mirrors. The emerald cut has 58 facets, 25 crown, 8 girdle, and 25 pavilion. Because of the angle, size and shape of the facets, this cut shows less brilliance and fire (dispersion) than other brilliant cut diamonds. However, the emerald cut stone reveals a classic beauty and elegance not seen in other cuts. Because of the open and large facets, we recommend a higher color and clarity than you might consider for a brilliant cut stone because they are more likely to become visible at lower grades. The classic emerald has a length to width ratio or 1.50, the recent trend is toward the more square shape.

Engagement rings with Emerald Shape diamonds are both sophisticated and elegant and can still show off sparkle and fire with more dramatic prisms of light.

Emerald Shape diamonds tend to be less expensive than other diamonds. They are neither as traditional as the Round Shape nor as trendy as the Princess Shape diamonds, they can still be as stunning without costing more money.

Purchasing a quality diamond is a major decision. Because you are purchasing a diamond for a very special occasion.

The article above can be used on your web site or newsletter. These fascinating radiant green stones are used in top of the line jewelries. Some of the finest emeralds can even cost more than diamonds.

For many mystics and energy healers, emerald stones are believed to help heal relationships and good for the heart and one's health. The beautiful green color is said to bring about harmony, love and joy of life. It is also the birthstone for the month of May.

Emeralds have been used both as gemstone and mystical stone since the ancient times. Early emerald mines existed in Egypt in 2000 BC. In fact, the most famous of the ancient emerald mine is that of The Mines of Cleopatra, The Queen of Egypt. The word "Emerald" means "green" in Sanskrit. It also means "smaragdos" in Greek and "esmeralde" in Old French.

Emerald is as beautiful as it is delicate. Emeralds are highly included which means that they have other materials trapped in the stone. This makes the stones have little resistance to breakage. This also poses a great challenge even to skilled gem cutters because many fissures in the stone make setting, cutting and cleaning rather difficult.

Many emeralds are cut for jewelries into rectangular and square shapes with beveled corners to bring out the beauty to the full. There are other cuts as well but if the raw emerald contains delicate inclusions, it is commonly cut into round shape.

Many of today's emeralds are enhanced with colorless oils or resins to give them more luster. This can be a delicate process as emeralds are sensitive stones. They should not be cleaned with ultrasonic bath like other gemstones. In fact, it is strongly advised that a wearer first removes the stone before putting his or her hand in water that has cleansing agent.

Because emeralds are rare and expensive stones, there are companies developing synthetic emeralds for many to afford. Carroll Catham first successfully developed a method to produce synthetic emeralds. Other producers of synthetic emeralds include Pierre Gilson Sr. which has been marketing since 1964 and IG Farben, Nacken and Tairus who are pioneers in hydrothermal synthetic emeralds.

Despite strict restrictions from the Federal Trade Commission which insists that gems should exhibit natural properties, synthetic emeralds continue to gain popularity due to its affordability.

To determine whether an emerald is natural or synthetic, luminescence in ultraviolet light is used.

Today's top quality emeralds come mostly come from Colombia where emeralds have the best transparency and fire. The Trapiche, a very rare kind of emerald which shows a star pattern, is found in the country. The rarest emeralds in the world can be found in Muzo, Coscuez, and Chivor. Other countries with fine emeralds include Brazil, Madagascar, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Zambia.

The most famous emeralds in the world are the Gachala Emerald, Nidvin Emerald, Chalk Emerald, Duke of Devonshire Emerald from Colombia and the Mackay Emerald, Greenshorkire Emerald and the Edward the Confessor Emerald in the Imperial State Crown of Great Britain.

To learn more about emerald gemstones and other loose gemstones, please visit http://www.gemstoneeducation.com

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Kevin_Chang

Crystals for Sun Sign in Taurus

APRIL 20 - MAY 20

Birthstone: Emerald

Abundance Stone: Peridot

You are ruled by Venus, which is the goddess of love. This was no surprise as over the years people have become rather upset and wary of the entire diamond industry. Most of these problems stem from the fact that diamonds are often used to finance genocidal wars in the small African countries and the fact that the diamond cartels are lying when they say that diamonds are as valuable as they seem to be. So with that in mind the moissanite alternative was introduced. People began to see that purchasing this gemstone was nearly as good as the real thing without all the hassle.

Not long ago diamond hybrid came to the world and it has been gaining worldwide acceptance ever since. diamond hybrid is composed of tiny diamond crystals that are all aligned to one. This creates the world’s first nearly flawless diamond stimulant and the world has been hungry for such an advancement.

The real issue seems to be which of these two versions of non-real diamonds are the best. Well according to the leading gemologists, the diamond hybrid takes the contest hands down. This is due to many reasons and they all speak to the quality and appearance of the stone itself.

moissanite has a good many problems. For one thing, it is nearly impossible for a moissanite to be created that is completely white (which is the most popular diamond color hands down). Most often the moissanite comes out with a slight pink or perhaps a gray tone that makes it not so appealing. This is never a problem with diamond hybrid. The color that has been created is near perfect and lends itself to the over all grade that the diamond hybrid brings about.

The other factor is that moissanite is very expensive by nature. The process to make the moissanite stone is long and very difficult. For this reason they normally sell for well over five hundred dollars a carat. diamond hybrid is not such a process and therefore is allowed to be sold at a lower price, which makes it all that more appealing.

No matter which way you turn you will find that the diamond hybrid will take the moissanite in all contests. The diamond hybrid has graded at F-G which is a rating that even the largest population of diamonds cannot attain. You will also have the over all quality and color that comes with the diamond hybrid that is only matched by the durability as such.

About the Author:

Diamond Hybrid Offers Diamond Hybrid which is a hybrid diamond simulant composed of a non-precious core crystal combined with infused amorphous diamond.

Read more articles by: David G. Men often wear jewelry given to them, however, they don’t think of buying it for themselves. They end up wearing their class ring decades after they have graduated. School pride is not what keeps them with that same old piece of collegiate jewelry, but rather it is a lack of other options. But thankfully, this is changing.

Today men are beginning to buy jewelry for themselves, such as chains, diamond rings, watches, bracelets and diamond studded earrings. Some buy jewelry as a status symbol. The days of men hating and not wearing jewelry are over.Women no longer have afirm grip on the jewelry market.

Jewelry found in regular retail stores offers little in the way of men’s jewelry. Usually, the men’s section might have a small showing of watches and maybe one or two ostentatious rings. As a result, men looking for masculine jewelry will often go online for variety and price.

Whether it’s a wedding band or a gold bracelet to wear with his power suit, a man now has options. Due to low markup, men’s jewelry can be purchased for amazingly low prices on the internet. The amazing array of men’s jewelry is a result of retailers having an abundance of resources for fine jewelry. Rather than selling one brand, many online shops will offer different makers, materials and styles.

Men that shop around for that right or unique piece of jewelry want high quality items. Men are advised to shop at online stores that have information such as clarity, materials, cut and other qualities clearly displayed. Since men have become so interested in purchasing and wearing jewelry it makes since that they would shop online for the better prices and options.

Diamond jewelry for men has become a lucrative market. More and more retailers such as the local jewelry store and department stores have gotten on the band wagon. But the better buy is still online. Look around and you will see that men are beginning to wear more diamonds than women. There is real proof showing that diamonds are no longer just a girl’s best friend. They have become man’s best friend also.

About the Author:

Amber Pierce is a staff writer at Jewelry Digest and is an occasional contributor to several other websites, including Family Review.

Read more articles by: Amber Pierce
Article Source: www.iSnare.com

Gemstone and Jewelry Legends and Lore

Gemstones have mesmerized and enticed people for centuries. Legends have developed throughout the world and followed these gemstones until today. These legends and stories have only served to intensify the interest with which these gemstones have been followed. Think about the image that is brought to mind when the Hope Diamond is mentioned. Many more stones have stories and legends to equal that of the Hope.

Diamond Legends

Perhaps the Hope Diamond is the most legendary gemstone of all. It has the reputation of bringing disaster to its owner. It shows red under a uvlight and is a fancy gray blue under natural light. The stone is said to be recut from a larger stone to its current shape. The Smithsonian Institute owns it. The Hope Diamond is not the Heart of the Ocean mentioned in the movie Titanic as some have said. The Hope Diamond was not on the Titanic.

Many of us have of the Taylor-Burton Diamond at 69 carats was Richard Burton's 40th birthday gift to Elizabeth Taylor. She sold the stone in 1978 to pay for a hospital in Botswana. She still wears another gift, the Krupp Diamond, which is 33.19 carats.
Pearl Legends
Probably the most famous story about pearls was about Cleopatra. She is said to have bet Mark Anthony that she could host the most expensive party. To do so, she dissolved a large pearl earring in vinegar and drank it.

Early Romans thought that pearls were created as a drop of rain penetrated between the layers of the oysters. The Persians had a legend that the pearl was created at the point of meeting between the rainbow and the earth.
Opal Legends
The Aborigines (native people of Australia) believe that ancestors to mark their presence left behind the opal. Some groups feel that Opals brought them fire. One local legend suggests that Muda, in the form of a pelican created Cooper's creek. He died where the opals are found and the fish in his pouch turned into opals.
Emerald Legends
Emeralds were considered to be healing in the distant past. Legend has it that in the 3rd century, emeralds were used to rest the eyes and to make snakes go blind. In Arabia, it was thought that emeralds would melt the dissolve a snake's eyes. Other uses of emeralds were to cure dysentery, stomach troubles and even diabetes.
It was thought that the Holy Grail was carved from an emerald that fell from Satan's crown. The Incas and Aztecs thought the emerald was a holy stone. It has even been suggested that emeralds would provide royal ancestry to commoners.

Emeralds are a form of corundum and legends abound about their powers and history, but Rubies are also corundum, and few if any legends follow Rubies.

Sapphire Legends
Early people thought that the earth was set into a sapphire. Early Persians believed that the earth rested on a Sapphire and the sky is blue because it is reflected from the Sapphire. One old legend even suggests that a snake put in a vessel with a Sapphire would die. It was believed that the Ten Commandments were written on Sapphire tablets.

Kingfisher Designs
http://www.wireweavers.com

Louise Coulson along with her husband Don designs and creates jewelry from sterling silver and gold filled wire. Their jewelry shows the wire used almost as if it were a fiber. The fiber arts approach comes from Louise's long background as a weaver and the meticulous craftsmanship is due to Don's background in engineering. The pieces are one-of-a-kind or limited edition.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Louise_Coulson

The Platinum Diamond Wedding Ring

A diamond ring is perhaps the most romantic gift that one can possibly give to a woman. The diamond ring for most people is a symbol of eternal and everlasting love, a love that will survive the hands of time. This is quite fitting as the diamond is the hardest element in the world.

Although the diamond ring did not come about until the turn of the 20th century because of the lack of supply, it has enjoyed considerable popularity among brides. In fact, a diamond wedding ring and a diamond engagement ring is considered as one of the essentials. Today, with the birth of new technology and the discovery of mining fields that supply diamonds, many can now afford the diamond ring for their loved ones.

Diamond rings come in all sorts of cuts and designs. One of the most popular is the princess cut and the brilliant cut, which can have more than 57 facets. One should also take into consideration the color of the diamond. The whiter the color, the more expensive it is. Another consideration is the clarity, which refers to the lack of imperfections in the stone.

With a lot of artisans and jewelry designers, there are perhaps a thousand styles to choose from, Victorian, Zen, Regency. One of the more modern styles is the one that uses the platinum as the setting. Unlike yellow gold and white gold, platinum has only gained ground in recent years. Brides are drawn to its unique color and luster. Platinum, in fact, is actually more expensive than gold.

This is because platinum is much harder to obtain and manufacture than gold or silver. In mining terms, it will take ten tons of ore to be able to produce an ounce of platinum. This is compared to the only three to four tons of ore that one needs to make an ounce of gold. In addition, there are also fewer platinum mines as compared to gold mines. In virtue of the laws of supply and demand, is it any wonder that the platinum diamond ring that you have been salivating for months now threaten to burn a hole in your pocket?

When selecting a platinum diamond wedding ring, it is important that you look for the signage or engraving that says PLAT or PT950. This means that the platinum is genuine and that it is 95 percent pure platinum. Without these, do not buy as you may be buying something that is not worth your money.

About the Author:

This content is provided by Low Jeremy. Everyone from celebrity couples to young couples in middle America seems to have them. Promise rings come in a variety of styles and center stones. They can be given for a variety of reasons, but are mostly used by couples intending to marry sometime in the future.

The Meaning of Diamond Promise Rings

Promise rings are usually given as a symbol of love and commitment. They are often given with the intent of becoming engaged at some point in the future. When the intent is commitment and ultimately, marriage, the ring is worn on the left hand. After the engagement, the ring is often switched to the right hand.

This allows the couple to test their commitment to each other prior to making the larger commitment of becoming engaged and getting married. Couples can show their commitment to each other without rushing into an early marriage, which too often ends in divorce. With the high divorce rates, taking it slow is a good idea.

Settings and stones range from simple to extravagant. In general, these are smaller and less expensive than engagement rings. The most common stone used is a diamond in a silver or gold setting, but just about any gemstone can be used. Some use another stone in the center with small diamonds as accents. Some couples use the birthstones of the couple for a more personal statement.

While they are most often given to the woman in the relationship, they are available in your local jewelry store for men as well. This is not a common tradition, but some modern, younger couples are doing this. These rings often carry the birthstones of the couple and are often engraved with initials or a line from a favourite song.

Early Diamond Promise Rings

The Scribbler ring was seen several hundred years ago in Europe. The diamonds in the ring were used to etch messages of love on windows. The diamonds were generally small in terms of carat, but were set in a way that made them sharp and easy to use to scribble on the glass.

French and English Poesy rings date back to Shakespearean times. These were inscribed with either a line from poetry, music or other messages of love. This tradition continues in promise and wedding jewelry, which are sometimes inscribed with initials, the wedding date or other messages.

Other Reasons for Diamond Promise Rings

By far, these rings are most often given as a promise of love and commitment between a man and a woman. However, promise rings can be given for other reasons. One less common reason is in exchange for a promise to remain drug and alcohol free during the teenage years. These pledges are often sought during the spring Prom season.

In some families, they are given from parent to child in exchange for a vow of chastity. This is often seen in Christian families. The child is promising to remain chaste and to not engage in sexual activity prior to marriage. A ring is given by the parent to symbolize this promise.

About the Author:

Clinton Maxwell releases for the internet site http://www.engagement-rings-tips.com. The cutting of the diamond includes three series' of operations: splitting (or cleaving), cutting and polishing (which includes setting and polishing the diamond).

The rough diamond is given to the splitter and it is he who determines the future of the stone. He decides how it should be shaped to retain the utmost weight with the most brilliant effect.

From the splitter the diamond passes to the cutter. His expertise lies in giving the stones the definite form which they are to preserve.

After a gemstone is sawed and ground to the desired shape and sanded to remove rough marks left by coarser grits, it is usually polished to a mirror-like finish to aid light reflection from the surface of the stone (or refraction through the stone, in the case of transparent materials).

The natural form of a diamond will determine the shape of the final polished diamond. Of all the cuts, the most popular is the round brilliant because of its ability to give a stone the greatest possible brilliance and fire with the most minimal amount of weight loss. A standard round brilliant cut has usually 57 or 58 polished facets.

Sometimes months, and even years, are required for the perfecting of single stones. African diamonds are said to be particularly hard and difficult to polish; but, in the end, the most hopelessly resistant gem yields to the indefatigability of man.

Diamond cutting is a great skill, practiced from generation to generation. The monotonous toil, patience and technical skill inherited and acquired by the workman are at last rewarded by the glitter of the magnificent stone polished to perfection. The traditional diamond cutting and trading centers are based in Antwerp, Mumbai, Tel Aviv, New York and Johannesburg. China and Thailand are more recently developed centers.

About the Author:

Written by Goldenmine Team http://diamonds.goldenmine.com specializes in all kinds Diamonds Jewelry. The promise is the intention to marry. Such “promise” or “betrothal” rings have probably been around since the 4th century, but their style and has changed dramatically, even if the meaning and tradition remains unchanged.

It began with the Roman Empire. Those betrothed wore an iron ring in private and adorned a more elaborate gold ring during public appearances. The traditional diamond engagement ring didn’t come into play until about the 18th Century. Prior to that, other gem stones started coming into play to dress up the plain gold band.

Selecting an engagement ring with diamonds is an education in and of itself. One learns quickly about the 4 Cs of selecting a diamond. Understanding the 4 Cs will help you make the best choice for your budget.

The 4Cs consist of “Cut,” “Clarity,” Carat,” and “Colour.”

Cut: The cut refers to the shape of the diamond. This can be round, oval, princess (a square shape), Emerald (more rectangular like an emerald), or marquis (pointed on either end.) The cut can greatly impact the brilliance because certain cuts provide more facets to the diamond therefore the opportunity for more light to reflect. A round cut has the greatest number of facets, and if properly proportioned, will appear the most brilliant. An emerald cut diamond has the fewest facets, so larger stones are need to make an impressive display.

Clarity: All diamonds, except the most rare, has some kind of mark, nick, or cloudiness to them caused by flaws. The clarity of the diamond is measured by an alphabetical and numerical scale with the diamonds in the “F” category being completely flawless. Most average jewelry stores carry diamonds in the range of VS1 to S1 ratings where slight flaws are still very difficult to see at 10x magnification.

Carat: Carat is the weight of the diamond. Many eager young couples focus too much on size. A one-carat diamond can be impressive, but if the quality of colour and cut don’t compare with the size, it will not be such a brilliant looking ring. Many couples opt to have a better quality diamond that in the proper setting appears large and put more emphasis on clarity and colour.

Colour: The colour of a diamond is also measured alphabetically. D-I are the whitest, with D being the very whitest. A diamond rated J-L will still be near colourless. The farther down the scale the more yellow the diamond will appear. There are some people who value a large, perfectly cut yellow diamond, but most traditional engagement rings focus on the brilliant white appearance.

Diamond Engagement Rings Today

If you are not necessarily one to stick with tradition, then you may choose an antique ring with smaller diamonds. It may be a sapphire ring with diamonds on the side.

The role of religion or tradition may play into your decision about your engagement ring. If you are Jewish or Christian you may want a ring with meaning related to your faith. A Celtic ring may be a must for those of Irish decent or others who love the rich tradition behind the intricate scroll work.

Whatever style you prefer, just be sure to shop around. There are so many different qualities that make up a special engagement ring, that you can’t rely on price alone to tell you its value.

bout the Author:

Ciara McNamara reveals many articles for http://www.engagement-rings-tips.com. On the color grading scale, diamonds graded D, E, and F mean they have no color. G, H, and I diamonds have very little color. J, K, and L mean that the diamond is a slight yellow color. P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, and X diamonds have a darker shade of yellow. Diamonds graded Z has a color other than yellow or white and are the rarest and most expensive diamonds in the world. Generally, D-graded diamonds are the most valuable, and X the least.

The cut of the diamond refers to the shape it is cut into and also its reflective quality.

Diamonds are generally cut with 58 facets. The sparkle and brilliance of the diamond generally depends on its cut, its angles, its finish and its ability to reflect light. The most popular diamond cuts are heart, oval, marquise, princess, pear, trillion, round, and emerald. Common cutting problems include a diamond cut too thin that causes it to lose some of its sparkle, or a missing or off center culet.

The clarity refers to the diamond's internal and surface imperfections and blemishes. Diamonds that are clear are more brilliant; they are also quite rare and thus highly priced. These flawless diamonds have no internal or external imperfections or blemishes

The perfect diamond carries a grade of FL or IF, that is, Flawless or Internally Flawless. A diamond with a grade of I-1, I-2 or I-3 means that it is imperfect, with I-3 being the worst grade. VVS1 and VVS2 means that the diamond is very very slightly imperfect; VS1 and VS2 diamond is very slightly imperfect; and SI-1 and SI-2 means that the diamond is slightly imperfect.

The unit by which the weight of the diamond is measured by is called the carat. One carat is equal to 200 milligrams. A carat is divided into 100 segments called points, with 150 points equal to one and a half carats.

When you purchase a diamond, you must purchase a diamond certificate also known as the Diamond Grading Report. This report is issued by the Gemological Institute of America otherwise known as GIA. With this diamond certificate, you can verify the diamond's color, cut, clarity and carat. You can buy a diamond with confidence from the diamond dealer as long as the certificate is GIA-issued and not from the dealer. Do not accept certificates from any other institute other than GIA, as GIA has been established as the most trustworthy and respectable.

About the Author:

For more on Diamonds visit Lovely Diamonds and Exquisite Diamonds. That’s largely because emeralds are a type of the mineral beryl and they are rare. They come in varying shades of green.

It is chromium, vanadium or iron elements in the stone which make that lovely green colour. On the Moh’s scale of hardness where the hardest is diamond at 10, emerald comes in around 7.5. So it is reasonably hard but rubies and sapphires come in harder around 9.

Where are they found?

Emeralds are found in India, South Africa, Russia, Pakistan and some small deposits in the USA. The most important emeralds come from Columbia.

Just how expensive is emerald?

Well, if you get any other gemstone of the same weight as an emerald, chances are most likely that the emerald will be the most expensive. So in that sense it is the most expensive gemstone in the world.

What should I know about emeralds?

One thing you should know is that emeralds often have lots of inclusions or imperfections inside them and the outer surface is often not perfect like a diamond. In order to make enhance the stone most emeralds are oiled after they have been cut. Sometimes emeralds have cracks in them which are filled with resin. These treatments have been used for longer than you have been alive and they are accepted as standard practice in the jewellery industry. Generally, you will be told by the seller of the stones treatments. Certainly you should ask if this is the case.

Are there Synthetic Emeralds?

Yes most definitely. In fact most of the emeralds you will see in the lower end to moderate end of jewellery in shops will be created emerald. It is cheap and beautiful and the only reason you shouldn’t buy it is if you love emeralds and you want and can afford real natural emerald gems.

How do I know which is a good emerald?

Think about all gemstones that you purchase in the same way:
Weight, colour, clarity and brilliance. When these qualities increase then the stone gets more expensive and its price will increase. So in simple terms a small, dull emerald with not much life to it is going to be cheap and not worth much. On the other hand, a large, vibrant, clear looking but beautiful green emerald that make you gasp is going to cost a lot and be worth it perhaps!

My advice is that if you a re looking to buy a natural emerald for that special piece of jewellery and are gong to pay well for it then buy from someone that you feel you can trust. Talk to the gemologist or jewellery and several would be better than one. Do some research by books and the internet about the stone. This will not only help you chose the right one for you but it will add some valuable interest to your purchase. Emerald is the birthstone for May.

Author: Gary Hocking is an Australian manufacturing jeweller and he has his own website: http://www.jewelleryexpress.com.au Please feel free to copy and use this article as long as you keep the bio and attached live link to his website.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Gary_Hocking

How Do You Choose A Diamond?

Set a Budget

When buying a diamond it is very easy to get carried away. Before you begin shopping determine a budget. Only you can decide what amount is comfortable for you. We at DiamondSafe.com do our best to provide premium quality diamonds at rock bottom prices. But remember - Diamonds are expensive

Know the 4C's

Over the years, diamond professionals have developed standards for comparing and evaluating diamonds. These standards are better known as the 4 C's - Carat weight, Color, Clarity, and Cut - which, together, affect the appearance and value of the diamond. A diamond's value is influenced by its rarity. Even the slightest differences can make a huge difference in value. Before purchasing your diamond you should take the time to learn what characteristics influence a diamond's value. Only then can you decide which of the 4C's - Carat weight, Color, Clarity, and Cut - are most important to you. Strive for a stone that offers the best combination of the 4C's.

Choose the shape that pleases you
Today's most popular shape is round but diamonds come in many appealing shapes.

Choose your diamond's color
Remember, the difference in color is minute but the price is not.

Choose the Clarity

Most diamonds have blemishes and inclusions. These inclusions are what makes your diamond unique. Diamonds are graded under 10 power magnification, so you might think twice before paying for better clarity that can't be seen with the naked eye.

Carat weight

Obviously everyone strives to purchase as large a diamond as possible. Remember, a large diamond is not always a beautiful diamond. Make sure you haven't compromised too much on the other 3C's before selecting your diamond. Be especially careful on the diamond's cut. A poorly cut diamond loses its fire and brilliance, therefore looking more like a piece of glass.

Search for your perfect diamond

Just enter your search criteria into our easy-to-use diamond search engine and you'll be on your way to purchasing a beautiful diamond.

About the Author:

http://www.diamondsafe.com

Read more articles by: Dana H
Article Source: www.iSnare.com

Gems - An Introduction To The World Of Gems

Diamonds have the highest refraction index, and those used for jewels are very transparent. Diamonds from Indian deposits were known in ancient times; in the West the limited use of diamonds began in the late Middle Ages. Diamonds for jewelry are graded on the basis of colour from blue-white to yellow. Grading also is done on the basis of purity, which varies from perfectly clear, extremely pure stones to those with many impurities and flaws. Large demand provided an incentive for the production of false diamonds (as well as other stones) as early as 1675 in Paris.

Mogok rubies, from Myanmar (Burma), are the most highly prized because of their bright red colour (pigeon blood). Those from Thailand are usually a more brownish colour, while those from Sri Lanka tend toward violet. Production of synthetic stones is far greater than the supply of natural rubies. The physical and optical properties of synthetic and natural rubies are so similar that it is difficult to distinguish between them.

The sapphire (blue variety of corundum) is considered one of the most valuable of precious stones. A sapphire's colouring usually indicates its origin. Those from Myanmar are deep blue. The Kashmir (Indian) sapphire is cornflower blue and is highly prized, being quite rare. Sapphires from Thailand are very similar in colour to those from Myanmar; those from Sri Lanka are of different shades but incline toward violet. Sapphires, like rubies, can be cut so that, in the light, a beautiful, luminous six-pointed star appears on the surface of the gem. Star sapphires and rubies are semi-opalescent. Synthetic sapphires and rubies are produced by the same industries.

The green emerald is a precious stone used since very ancient times. There is documentation of its presence in Egypt during the life of Pharaoh Sesostris III in the 19th century BC. At the end of the 16th century, emeralds from South America were brought into Europe. On the American continent, the first peoples to use emeralds were those belonging to the pre-Columbian civilizations, in particular the Inca. In 1935 in the United States (Chatham) and in Germany (Farbenindustrie), synthetic emerald crystals were made with characteristics similar to natural ones.

Among the beryls, mention must be made of morganite (pink beryl) found in various shades of peach-blossom pink. The main deposits are in California and Madagascar.

The two best known and most widely used varieties of chrysoberyl are alexandrite (transparent) and Oriental cat's-eye (opaque). Because of its great power of absorption of certain colours, alexandrite looks green in daylight and reddish purple in artificial light. The cat's-eye is a yellowish green colour and is characterized by a luminous line. The intensity of the light in this line varies according to the brightness of the rays of light that strike it.

One of the most important gems with pure crystals is the topaz, used a great deal in jewelry. The honey-yellow variety is the best known, but there are also pink, red, blue, and the less-used colourless stones. The Oriental topaz (a corundum) and citrine quartz are also widely used. They are less rare than other kinds of topaz and, therefore, less expensive but create a similar effect.

Among the less-important and less-rare stones, the zircon is quite widely used in its three varieties: orange, blue, and colourless. The orange variety is called jacinth and was used to a great extent in classical antiquity. The blue variety is called starlite or Siam zircon, while the third type is called Ceylon or Matara diamond.

Among the semiprecious stones used in jewelry are amethyst, garnet, aquamarine, amber, jade, turquoise, opal, lapis lazuli, and malachite. Matrix jewelry is cut from a stone such as opal or turquoise and the surrounding natural material, or matrix.

The pearl is one of the oldest gems known. Its colour varies according to the waters from which it comes. Pearls from the Persian Gulf are usually cream-coloured; those from Australia are white with greenish or bluish shades; golden-brown pearls come from the Gulf of Panama; those from Mexico are black or reddish brown; pink pearls are from Sri Lanka; and those from Japan are cream-coloured or white with greenish tones. The main characteristic of the pearl is its iridescence. Baroque pearls are those with defects in their outer layer. In modern times baroque pearls are rounded off artificially but, in the 16th and 17th centuries, their irregular form was exploited in jewelry by using them to make up parts of animals or other figures. After huge quantities of cultivated pearls invaded the world market, interest in natural pearls underwent a considerable decrease.

In addition to pearl, a number of other organic materials, including amber, coral, ivory, and jet, are considered gems.

Amber is a fossil resin, usually yellowish brown, but on occasion deep brown to red, green, or blue. It is an amorphous hydrocarbon and may contain particles of various foreign materials, trapped insects, and air bubbles. Its lustre is greasy to resinous. The most noted occurrence of amber is along the shores of the Baltic Sea, where pieces have been washed up by wave action. Other important occurrences are along the coast of Sicily, in Romania, and in Myanmar near Myitkyin.

Coral is the skeletal material of calcium carbonate built up by small animals that live in colonies in the sea. This material is usually branchlike and occurs in a variety of colours, of which the most sought after are rose red to red. The best coral comes from the Mediterranean Sea, particularly off the coasts of Algeria and Tunisia. A black horny coral growth, probably conchiolin, which hardens on exposure to air, has been obtained off the islands of Hawaii. Coral is carved into art objects and cut as beads, cameos, and other ornaments.

The use of ivory for ornamental purposes dates to prehistory. The term should be restricted to the material derived from the tusks of certain animals-namely, the elephant, hippopotamus, warthog, walrus, sperm whale, narwhal, and the extinct mammoth (fossil ivory). The pale cream colour of new ivory darkens with age to yellow. All types are brittle and will not peel as do the plastics used to simulate them.

Jet is a dense variety of lignite formed by the submersion of driftwood in the mud of the seafloor. It has been recovered since Roman times from the shales near Whitby in northeastern England. It takes a high polish and was once popular as mourning and ecclesiastical jewelry but has been superseded by black onyx, black tourmaline, and plastics. Because it is actually a variety of coal, it will burn.

Gem engraving, setting, and cutting

The most ancient technique of stone engraving, intaglio-incised carving, was probably first used to produce seals. The art is believed to have originated in southern Mesopotamia and was highly developed by the 4th millennium BC. During the Hellenistic Age (c. 323-30 BC) intaglio surface engraving gave rise to the idea of carving stones in relief, exploiting the different coloured layers of certain minerals to create contrasting figures (cameo): the background was cut down to the lower level, of a different colour or shade, in order to make the subject stand out chromatically. The stones that have properties suited for this purpose are sardonyx, agate, and onyx.

The cameo is usually one of the components for necklaces, bracelets, and rings or is included in medallions with a jeweled frame. The art of cameo in jewelry was most highly developed during three periods: the late republican to early imperial period in Rome, the Renaissance, and the Neoclassical period in the 18th century.

The evolution of techniques of setting has followed that of stonecutting. The insertion of gems in jewelry can be done in various ways. The setting can have a round, square, oval, or rectangular collet (rim); in periods in which gems were mounted in their own irregular shapes, the collet followed this form. Usually, on the inside of the collet a short distance from the edge, there is a protrusion on which the stone rests. The edge is pounded down around the gem to ensure its stability. In coronet settings the form may be conical or pyramidal, solid or pierced. The edge is first shaped into a row of teeth, which are later hammered down onto the gem in order to hold it in place. Until fairly recently, nearly all gems were mounted on a metal base; and transparent stones, according to their colour, were placed on a gold or silver base to increase the amount of light reflected. As new cuts were developed for stones, setting techniques also progressed, especially for those jewels in which important stones like diamonds, emeralds, and rubies form the main theme. The tendency was to leave the stones as visible as possible (especially in rivière necklaces and bracelets made only of diamonds) by mounting them with a very small ring of white gold or platinum fitted closely against the back of the stone. Three claws, attached to this ring, hold the stone in place.

Pearls, like some coloured stones, in ancient classical times were pierced with a drill, the hole going half or all the way through according to whether the pearls were to be strung on a necklace or fastened onto a jewel.

Until the 15th century, stones were only polished or the part to be left visible was rounded into a dome shape called cabochon. The cutting known as faceting gradually developed from the first attempts in the 15th century, probably in France and the Netherlands. During the 16th century the simple rose cut began to be used, after which there were no new developments until 1640, when, under the patronage of Jules Cardinal Mazarin, the first brilliant cut was carried out (also called the Mazarin cut). Toward the end of that century, a Venitian succeeded in obtaining the triple brilliant cut, which is still used. The numerous cuts used for diamonds today are usually applied to other precious and semiprecious transparent stones as well. For emeralds, rubies, and other coloured stones the square or rectangular cut with a stepped bulb or the cabochon cut are usually used.

Article by http://dresspack.com
Source: http://myjewelpack.com

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Zakeri_Young

Emeralds - Look Beautiful In Green

Emeralds in History

The word Emerald is from the Greek word “smaragdos," meaning "green stone". It is considered to be a holy stone and is believed to be one of the gemstones found in the breastplate of Aaron. Throughout history, different races have been fascinated by emeralds – Egyptians, Incas, and Spanish. This fascination continues to the present time.

If your daughter’s birthday is on May and you are looking for her first earring, you could give her an earring with an emerald stone. If your 20th or 35th wedding anniversary is fast approaching and you are looking for the perfect gift for your wife, maybe you could consider getting her emerald earrings for this special occasion. The ancients believe that an emerald symbolizes serenity of spirit and of mind. You might probably shrug your shoulders on ancient beliefs but emeralds are really soothing and restful for the eyes.

Judging Emeralds

Today, emeralds are still used for earrings, bracelets and necklaces. Emerald jewelry is one of the best gifts for women. They are pretty expensive though as they cost thousands of dollars, but are worth buying just to let your wife know you value her. It is a rather good gift for a marriage that lasted 20 years or 35 years!

It is difficult to look for a very good piece of emerald jewelry as high-quality emeralds could be very rare. Many emeralds contain bubbles or inclusions. Being a very old form of stone, you’d know how old the emerald is by the bubbles it has. The value of an emerald depends on its color, on how green it is. The greener the emerald, the more valuable and expensive it is. Bubbles do not affect the value; it is the color that determines the worth of the emerald.

A form of emerald that is especially considered to be of high-quality is the Columbian emerald. A famous Columbian emerald is the Trapiche which has six rays emanating from the center when the stone is cut.

When you are buying an emerald necklace, bracelet or earring, you must carefully check the stone as there are a lot of fake emeralds being sold in the market. It is safer to buy from a high-quality jewelry store to avoid buying these fake emeralds. Look for a GIA certificate which would assure you that the emeralds are genuine.

Make sure the stones are not heated, irradiated, coated or dyed in any way. Some stones are subjected to this treatment to change their color and make them more expensive. Check the stones from all angles and check the color as well. The greener the stone is, the more valuable it is. Although emeralds are rarely perfect, check for bubbles, inclusions or other flaws. There should be no scratches or flaws on the stone’s surface.

If a stone is set off as a ring or as a necklace, make sure that you could see the back of the stone. It should have a claw setting and the setting should allow the light to pass through so that the stone will not look dull.

Now, you are ready to buy your perfect emerald.

Eric Hartwell oversees "The World's Best Homepage" intended to be a user-generated resource where YOUR opinion counts. Preferably one who specializes in precious gemstones and emeralds in particular if possible.

Many gemstones are heat treated, including emeralds. This is done to bring out the colors more and sometimes to even change the color of a stone. Find out if the stone has been heat treated in anyway. Also if it has been irradiated, coated or dyed. Sometimes these treatments will devalue the stone but other times may even increase the value.

Check the color of the stone. Generally speaking the deeper the color or hue the more valuable the stone will be. The gemstone should be near perfect with no visible flaws visible to the naked eye. The surface should reflect light and the stone have perfect clarity. There should be no visible flaws or scratches on the surface of the stone.

Make sure you can examine the stone from all sides and angles. Turn it over in your hand. Also try and get the opportunity to examine the stone in natural light. Many gemstones will change tone or even color in artificial light.

Pure genuine emeralds are not cheap. If you are offered a cheap emerald s it is most likely not genuine but a fake.

If possible get a certificate stating the type, quality and details of the stone from the dealer. Make sure it is very specific. If at anytime you discover the stone is not as described you want to be able to return it and get a refund so ensure the dealer has a returns policy that allows for this.

If the stone has been set in a ring or other metal ensure that you can see the back of the stone. This is important as if the back is blocked off then there will be limited light able to shine through and the stone will not look as good. A stone should have a claw setting and not be glued in place. Glue can deteriorate over time and the stone be lost.

Taking the above factors into consideration will assist to finding and keeping emerald jewelery for many years to come.

http://allabout emeralds.org contains much information about emeralds.

Permission to use this article is granted provided the link is included.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Michael_J_Moore

Emerald is May's Birthstone

If you're still young enough to remember your birthday, you probably also remember the special birthstone assigned to it. But at your age, we bet you don't really know the SIGNIFICANCE of your birthstone and what power the ancients felt would be bestowed about you by wearing it.

May's Birthstone: Emerald

Birthstone Properties: Symbolizes serenity and peace of mind.

Alternative Birthstone: Sapphire

Emerald is the birthstone for May and also the anniversary gemstone for the 20th and 35th years of marriage. Some people believe wearing an emerald brings wisdom, growth…patience. It is perhaps this last attribute that may explain why a gift of emerald for an anniversary -- or any occasion -- is symbolic of love and fidelity.

All Eyes on Emeralds

Emeralds were once prescribed for eye diseases because the green color was believed to be soothing to the eyes. Early stone cutters kept emeralds at their tables to gaze upon as a way to give their eyes a break. Even 21st Century color specialists agree that green is soothing, restful, and relaxing for the eyes.

Today's versatile emeralds continue to be "easy on the eyes," used in earrings, bracelets, necklaces, and other body adornment.

The Color of Spring

An emerald shines like green lightning, filling us with the same wonder as the civilizations that came before us. Ancient Egyptians mined emeralds in the eastern desert region 2,000 years before Cleopatra’s birth, yet today recent finds in North Carolina may provide a new source for quality emeralds in the U.S. Colombia, Brazil, Zimbabwe, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Madagascar, Nigeria, and Russia are where most emeralds are mined in the 21st Century.

May's birthstone seems perfectly suited to the rites of Spring, matching the colors of the season with its own bottomless green. In fact, the Egyptians engraved emeralds with symbols for Spring foliage to represent eternal youth, and then buried the jewels with their dead. Elsewhere in the ancient world, the Romans associated emeralds with fertility and the rebirth brought about each Spring. Nero, it's said, watched the gladiators through emerald glasses

The Incas worshiped emeralds…as long as they could. In the 1500's, they were invaded by Spanish Conquistadors who stole their gemstones and pillaged their mines. As a result, many of the world's most magnificent emeralds were lost at the bottom of the sea inside shipwrecked Spanish galleons.

It's Not Easy Being Green

The word "emerald" is a variation of the Greek word "smaragdos," which means "green stone"…perfectly appropriate for a gemstone that is, in fact, the green variety of the mineral beryl. Emeralds range from strong bluish-green to green hues, although some emeralds have a slightly yellowish green. If the hue is too yellow…or too blue…it loses its "emerald" status and is simply a different variety of beryl.

Colombian emeralds are generally agreed to be among the most beautiful gemstones in the world, with a grass-green coloring highlighted by a touch of blue.

Learn How To Buy Jewelry And Gemstones Without Being Ripped Off. The lamp has a removable lens where the therapist places a fully faceted precious gemstone and the lamp plugs into an electronic instrument. The instrument is capable of producing frequencies from 1 to 16 pulses per second, which are then imposed on a copper coil inside the gem lamp.
A patient or client is then bathed in the healing light rays of the color that is transmitted through the gem and onto their body. An amazing transformation then almost immediately takes place. Especially with emerald treatments and blue sapphire treatments an immediate calm comes over the person being treated. It almost seems like a "tranquility ray" has been blasted into the entire room.

With the blue sapphire treatment an immediate slowing down of the mind takes place and the person feels restful and wants to relax. A feeling of simple "well-being" comes over them, muscles relax and tensions start to dissipate. What a wonderful addition to a massage. So often a massage therapist finds that their client is so tense and stressed (which is why they're there for a massage in the first place) that they have to take much longer before being able to deepen the massage of muscles as it is too painful. With the blue sapphire treatment for 15 minutes beforehand the client is relaxed and whatever worries they had are forgotten, at least for the moment, and that's all that's needed to be able to allow a massage therapist to make the most of the session.

Interestingly enough the blue sapphire treatment is also having success in treating sleep disorders, due to the calming effect. Not that a person has it with their massage and then is sleepy for the day, but it's almost like the effect is retraining the mind to relax when it's time to relax. Many report sleeping better for many nights after one treatment before their massage. Persons suffering from depression also reported that the treatment gave them a lift and reduced their anxiety and natural health care practitioners are now using it as an alternative to drugs for depression and anxiety disorders.

Estheticians rejoice, as you can now give the most rejuvenating facial possible with the "emerald facial". Emeralds have had a reputation from the lore of many cultures as being "soothing to the eyes". They were also said to be rejuvenating and indeed this seems to be the effects of using these emerald "healing rays" on the skin while getting a traditional facial.

In keeping with the ancient folklore the emerald treatment relieves fatigued eyelids and also makes the lips look healthier. It is revitalizing for the skin and is now being thought to be the best gem to use for "anti-aging" and for repairing damaged skin, even from sun damage. The green color emitted through the emerald seems to regenerate healthy skin cells, unclog pores and clear the complexion, including uneven skin tone and discoloration.
Even skin problems like psoriasis, eczema and acne respond positively to treatment with emerald and in some patients a treatment with red coral in the gem lamp is also used. Whether for repair, nourishing or beautifying one's skin the emerald gem treatment seems set to be the wave of the future in all spas world wide.

Just got to the spa after a long plane journey? The emerald treatment in one lamp taken at the same time a blue sapphire treatment is given with another lamp (each instrument is capable of having two separate lamps with two completely different gem treatments at one time) will make your jet lag disappear within 20 minutes.

With so many therapists now beginning to become interested in this phenomenal natural therapy and using it in conjunction with a myriad of healing modalities we are certain to see more successes being publicized in the future. One thing we all agree on, though, is it's the most wonderful complement to spa therapies in the history of the industry. Next time you go to a spa, ask for it.

Howard Beckman (Hamsavatar das) is a director of the Vedic Cultural Fellowship and Pecos Valley Yoga and Ayurveda Center. And while the boys may have been right in that regard, the almighty dollar can certainly buy most anything else. Diamond rings are just one of the many luxuries that can be afforded by people with money to burn, and many times these rings can cost thousands of dollars. But what if you are just a hard working average Joe who would like to show his sweetheart that she is appreciated? Not all of us have swelling bank accounts, but thankfully there are places out there where you can buy wonderful cheap diamond rings. And when we say cheap we’re referring to price alone, as these rings are just as beautiful as their higher priced counterparts. In this article, we’ll show you where to find cheap diamond rings that look anything but.

The first place to find cheap diamond rings is at your local mall. The jewelry stores inside most malls are able to offer diamond rings at a discount for a couple of different reasons. First, these chain stores are always able to stay in profit because they experience heavier traffic than a stand alone store. In addition, they have stores all across the country, as opposed to Mom & Pop jewelry stores that are in one city or state. The diamond rings at these stores look almost identical to the more expensive rings. Only a gemologist would truly be able to tell them apart.

Another great place to find cheap diamond rings is at huge retail stores such as Wal-Mart or J.C. Penney’s. These stores have a wide selection of cheap diamond rings at amazing prices. Now, keep in mind that many of these rings will be much smaller than a more expensive ring, but the diamond quality is very similar. You should definitely have some luck in these types of stores.

If you still haven’t found the right cheap diamond ring, why not try a pawn shop? Many times pawn shops will have amazing diamond rings that they are more than willing to sell for a reduced cost. A lot of these rings look great, and the only reason they ended up available was because a person no longer wanted it. In instances like this, their loss can definitely be your gain.

One last suggestion on where to find cheap diamond rings is through the internet. The internet has many great web sites that sell diamond rings at an amazing discount. As long as you use common sense (make sure the business is reputable, has an appraisal service, etc.), you may be able to find a great ring through these online merchants. In addition, auction sites such as ebay regularly offer cheap diamond rings that can be had for virtually nothing. Get in the habit of checking out these sites to see if anything catches your eye.

As you can see, there are plenty of places where you can find cheap diamond rings. Generally speaking most people think diamonds when they think engagements rings, but this is not always the case. It might be quite simply that they like the way an emerald looks or it may be that their favorite color is green. However there is much more to the decision to purchase an emerald engagement ring than these simple factors. The earliest known emeralds were found close to the coast of the Red sea in Upper Egypt and Afghanistan, but much as changed because today, the best emeralds are found in Columbia, South America.

The name emerald derives from the Greek "smaragdos" meaning green stone; there is much folklore surrounding the properties of the emerald, it was believed to provide a cure for everything from leprosy to dysentery. Biblically the emerald is one of the precious stones in the "Breastplate of Judgment" worn by Aaron, (Exodus 28:15-30). And the literal translation from Ancient Hebrew means glowing coal.

Its history alone is exotic enough to make one want to choose an emerald engagement ring and it is apt in that its symbolism indicates immortality and faith. The emerald is considered to be the most powerful gemstone in terms of healing energy. Interestingly the emerald was Cleopatra's favorite gemstone.

The emerald is one of the "Big Five" of precious stones and is considered to be more precious and rare than a diamond. In comparison with other precious stones the emerald is completely unique, from the way it is formed to its beautiful color it is because of this that the emerald is one of the most desirable gemstones for an engagement ring. Most other precious stones are found in gem gravels, the emerald is always found within the pegmatites or granite in which it was formed.

Emerald is a hard gemstone but can be brittle, with a hardness of between 7.5 and 8 on the Moh's scale; it is the most valuable type of Beryl found. The emeralds green color is influenced by the amount of chromium found in the silicate and colors vary in range from green to green blue and yellow green. An emerald engagement ring is definitely more unique than the diamond or any other gemstone available today.

It is the birthstone for March, therefore an emerald engagement ring is appropriate for brides-to-be, born in March, if not for all the wonderful history and healing powers that the stone encompasses.

Your emerald engagement ring means you have chosen a stone that is relatively hardy, but they do naturally have inclusions which make them prone to chips; oils and fillers are used to treat these small fissures and increase the luster of the stone. It is not recommended that you wear your emerald engagement ring when involved in heavy work, so if you are a motor mechanic or welder, leave it at home. Most often you will find an emerald engagement rings with a bezel-setting, this protects them. Cleaning is easily accomplished with the use of an old soft toothbrush and lukewarm water.

An emerald engagement ring is not only a beautiful, rare and valuable gemstone, it has a dynamic history and symbolism, and its healing powers have even been used to treat such sever illness as cancers.

The author just celebrated her one year anniversary and sports a beautiful ascher cut ring.
