Lara Miller Event

I got to attend a fun event last week. It was held at local designer, Lara Miller's studio.

We were asked to browse through all her collections and style a look to be photographed. They will eventually choose their favorite looks for the Lara Miller 2012 look book.

I did not have the right shoes, accessories or figure (still need to lose those pesky 10 lbs!) but I got into it anyway and put something together. I skipped hair and makeup and went straight to photography so I could just as quickly, get out of the clothes and on to the mingling.

There was plenty of food, prosecco and molly's cupcakes to keep my hands and mouth busy while I chitchatted with the ladies.

Leopard Denim Look of the Day!

I took the leopard jeans out for a spin last night to attend the Lara Miller event. I kept the rest of my look very clean and ladylike to balance out the wild print on the jeans. I would have much preferred to have a slim fitting top under the blazer, probably tucked in with a classic belt, but unfortunately my post postpartum belly is not slim fitting top ready quite yet.

Hubby snapped these pics as I was rushing out the door. A, who was watching me get ready asked for this long silver necklace. She proceeded to wrap it around and around her wrist and then asked me if I liked her bracelets. I guess she was inspired by my wrist candy. Then, she wanted to get in the pictures so of course, I obliged. Isn't her dress adorable? My mom brought it from Korea and I kinda want one for myself!

Leopard Denim

So I've been kind of obsessed with Current/Elliott's leopard stiletto jeans. But paying $198 for leopard printed anything is a little excessive for me. I searched high and low for an affordable alternative and I was so excited when I finally came across a decent budget option. Especially because most of the cheaper pairs I found were awful!

S.O.N.G. Animal Print Skinny Jeans

Spotted at the Juniors section of Nordstrom were these skinnies in the faded, subtle style I was after. These retail for $58 and actually fit pretty well. I can't wait to wear them out!

Baby Must Have's

I had pretty much everything I needed for Baby D leftover from Baby A but I did purchase a couple more things that came highly recommended to me. These are some of my fave new products that I can't live without!

1. Patemm Changing Pad

$60

I know, I know...$60 for a changing pad is insane but hear me out. This is definitely not a need but if you can afford the splurge, you will not regret it. This changing pad is made of laminated cotton so it's easy to wipe clean but has some padding so very comfortable for your baby to lay on. Also, the best part is the circular shape. With A, I hated changing her diaper in public bathrooms with her narrow rectangular changing pad. No matter how careful I was, her little arm or leg would touch the dirty surfaces! Also, this pad is great for laying the baby out to play at the park, on wood floors, or after a bath. I use this every time I give D a bath. The Patemm has pockets along the perimeter to store diapers, wipes, aquaphor, etc so everything you need is right here. It also doesn't have any zippers or buttons so you can easily open and close it with one hand. I know of 2 other people that have this and all 3 of us absolutely love it and swear by it!! I highly, highly recommend!

2. White Noise Lite App

Free!

I use this app all the time! When D is looking drowsy, I give her a pacifier and turn this app on and she puts herself into a deep sleep and won't get woken up by A, or a firetruck or anything else.

3. Woombie Swaddle

A friend told me about this just a month prior to me having D. I was a huge fan of the Aden + Anais swaddles with A and was skeptical. Plus, it was $25 for just 1 swaddle which is pretty pricey. After hearing my friend rave about it and reading amazing reviews, I decided to try it out. I have used the woombie pretty much every single day since D was born. The fabric hugs the baby without making them feel confined. No more issues with swaddles unraveling! Also, it's just so simple to put on. I remember trying to swaddle A in the middle of the night, bleary eyed and exhausted and the swaddle would come out too short so I would have to start all over. With the woombie, I zip and put her back in the bassinet. Too easy!

Personalized Gifts!

I got this idea from one of my favorite food blogs, Week of Menus. The mugs are from Anthropologie and inside, I packaged Pecan Rolo Pretzels. To package them, I put the sweets in a clear bag and tied with the twisties it comes with. I placed the bag of sweets in the mug and put the entire mug into a larger clear bag. I then tied the bag with red ribbon with a tiny red ornament.

I love how festive it looks! I got the idea to use tiny ornaments for gift wrapping from my sister in law. So cute!

These make great gifts for teachers! I absolutely love these mugs and bought 4 for our house as well.

The tradition of cinnamon rolls on Christmas morning continues. Except this year, I didn't even attempt a recipe. These came out of a can from Trader Joe's and they were actually quite good!

My Labor Story

Note: This is the longest entry I've ever written. I wrote this labor story weeks ago and kept meaning to edit it down before posting but finally, I decided just to post it as is. I completely understand if you skip this post but since some of you asked for it, here it is...the long version of my labor story.

So I was that girl that went into the hospital (twice!) thinking I was in labor only to be sent back home both times. Having a child at home, going into the hospital is no simple feat. We had to call and wake friends and family in the middle of the night to come over (bags packed to sleep over) and stay with A. My mom, who was on a trip with friends in Korea cut her vacation short to come to Chicago a week early when I told her of my contractions (despite my pleas not to come early). How could I not feel like the boy who cried wolf?

The truth is...I was terrified and it was my friend S that did it. She had her son (her 2nd also) a few weeks before I started feeling contractions. She said the contractions were mild and then, all of a sudden in a matter of minutes, they were coming so quickly and painfully. She rushed to the hospital (after a pit stop to the gas station..can you believe they were out of gas??) and was pronounced 10 cm dilated with no time for an epidural. The entire labor took 3-4 hours! Our hospital was a good 20 minutes away and I was terrified of getting there too late. I admit I'm a huge wimp and never considered laboring without the epidural. It was actually a huge fear of mine!

So...starting at 38 weeks, I started feeling contractions. They weren't painful but they were pretty regular. There would be nights when they would be 4-5 minutes apart for 2 hours straight. Then the next day, the contractions would be more sporadic and all over the place. This went on for 2 weeks and it was extremely frustrating and confusing. Also, I felt so much pressure that I hadn't felt with A even at 40 weeks, which made me think even more that I was close.

The first time I went to the hospital, I wasn't dilated at all. The very next day, I had my regular doctors appointment and I was now 2-3 cm dilated. Again, confusing! I thought I dilated so quickly overnight so I would probably continue to progress quickly. I was wrong. I stayed 2-3 cm for 2 weeks until I finally begged to be induced.

On Monday, 10/24, we arrived at the hospital at 7 pm. I was still only 2-3 cm dilated. The nurse assigned to me was so sweet but new and inexperienced. She didn't know how to turn on the contraction tracking machine and her hands would shake a lot. She had to keep paging another nurse to ask for help. It was far from comforting to be under her care. When it came time to put my IV in, it took her and another nurse 3 tries to get it in properly. My left arm, where they made the first 2 attempts was so swollen, painful and badly bruised for weeks afterward. When the newbie nurse's shift ended at 9 pm, I think I bid her farewell a little too enthusiastically. My new nurse was much older, very experienced and had a soothing tone to her voice. I started to relax. They started me on pitocin and the contractions began shortly after. They weren't painful for the first couple of hours but around 11 pm, I started to feel more pressure and pain. Not unbearable by any means but definitely getting more intense. I told the nurse I would want the epidural soon but not quite yet. At midnight, she came back with the anesthesiologist and I was glad. After the drugs kicked in, I was completely numb from the waist down and no longer feeling the contractions, I was able to rest. Hubbie and I both slept from midnight till around 5:30 am except for when the doctors came to check on how I was progressing. At around 5:45 am, they checked me and I was fully dilated at 10 cm. Yay! But then we had to wait for my doctor to get in. She finally arrived a little after 6. The nurses tried to put my legs on the stirrups but they just flopped down. So much for being modest. I was completely numb and couldn't feel a thing. People always worry that they won't know how to push if they're numb but with both A and D, I couldn't feel a thing but somehow managed to push them out quickly. I pushed through 3 contractions and around 8 minutes with D.

When she came out, I remember my doctor saying "woah she's big!" as they put her on my chest. I felt so overwhelmed as I held her repeating "oh my gosh oh my gosh" over and over again. I was tearing up as I held her and examined her face.

I should explain. When A was born, she was rushed to the NICU right away. I never got to hold her or even look at her until hours later. When we finally were able to visit her in NICU, she was in an incubator with an IV and all kinds of needles poking her. It was completely heartbreaking and terrifying. I remember standing outside of her incubator and just bawling my eyes out while holding her little hands. She was born with a little pocket of air in one of her lungs but apparently it's pretty common and usually closes up on it's own, which is what happened with A. But they had to keep her and monitor her until it closed up. So anyway, I never got to experience that traditional first meeting with your infant when I had A.

So going back to D, it was absolutely perfect. After I had a few moments with her, the nurses took her to the side of the room to do their tests. They were like "let's guess how much she weighs" and one of the nurses said 8 lbs and Hubbie and I laughed as in "yeah right!". A was 7 lbs, 6 oz and I was expecting something similar. Then, they announced "8 lbs, 6 oz"! We were shocked! Then, my doctor said if I have a third and it's a boy, it might be over 9 lbs! Yikes!

After they finished up, they brought D over to me swaddled and I was able to nurse right away for almost an hour. I was so proud of D for latching right away and it was such an amazing bonding experience. Another thing I missed out on with A.

My doctor said that most people labor similarly for all their children and she was right. My water didn't break for both, I labored for about 8-10 hours for both, and I pushed for a short amount of time (8 mins and 22 mins) for both. I'm so thankful that I've had easy labors without complications and that I have 2 beautiful, healthy girls. Sorry this was such a long post. I'm seriously impressed if anyone read through this whole thing!

Real Winter Boots

For really cold or wet days, I had 2 boot options in the past. Uggs or Hunters. The Uggs were warm but not waterproof. The Hunters were waterproof but not warm. This year, I finally got myself some real winter boots. Warm, waterproof AND chic!

Sorel Tofino in Black/Oyster Gray

Usually, these kinds of boots are a little too rugged for my taste. But these, with the quilted detailing, all black coloring and slimmer fit are definitely a more feminine, elegant version of a snow boot.

I got these at a great price on Black Friday and have actually been willing snow to fall so I can bust them out. As my luck would have it, we had practically no snow all of December! We finally had a light dusting of snow over the weekend and you better believe I took these bad boys out for a spin.

Rent the Runway Event

I got to attend an event hosted by Rent the Runway a month ago. I apologize for blogging about it so late. Jen from Red Soles and Red Wine actually lives right by me and invited me along. It was held at the loft above Maxine's salon. Champagne was free flowing, hor dourves were served and the room was filled with outgoing fashionista bloggers. It was my first night out just 6 weeks after delivering baby D and it was a great time! I was having so much fun though that I forgot to take any pictures until we were in the elevator leaving the event. Here is the 1 picture I have from the night.

The swag bag was filled with lots of goodies like Vosges chocolate, hand creams and lots of coupons. The best thing by far was the 50% coupon for a dress rental at Rent the Runway. Yay!

I got to take my new satchel out for a spin the other day. I love how the blinding neon contrasts with my understated blush sweater. This bag can elevate a look from plain and boring to fun and interesting, simply using color, albeit a very, very bright color.

This is my first post-baby outfit post and I have to admit I was a little insecure about taking pics before losing all my baby weight. It's impossible to diet when you're nursing and starving all the time! I have a little over a month to lose the rest of my baby weight. Hubbie's company ball is coming up and I rented a dress in my pre-pregnancy size. Any tips on how to lose weight without dieting or working out? ;)

The best gift I ever gave

It was the first Christmas hubbie and I celebrated together. He had mentioned before how he remembered distinctly only getting a Christmas present once growing up. He woke up one year when he was 5 or 6 to a present sitting next to him in bed. It was a Mr. T doll and it was perfect. In the years that followed, he would wake up excited on Christmas morning thinking maybe there would be a present next to him again only to be disappointed. Many of us second generation kids grew up similarly because our parents just didn't understand the traditions or were too busy trying to make a living in a new country to find time.

Anyway, I searched for weeks and tracked down a vintage Mr. T doll circa 1983 on ebay. I still remember the look on his face when he saw Mr. T. There's something so special about giving and receiving a truly thoughtful gift.

A finally gets the whole Santa concept this year. She dictated this letter to Santa.

We got the Elf on the Shelf and we are loving this new tradition! For those who don't know what it is, you basically buy this book and elf combo. The elf sits somewhere in your house and watches how you behave. Each night, he flies to the North Pole to tell Santa if you've been naughty or nice. He disappears every year on Christmas Eve and reappears each year the day after Thanksgiving. After seeing the movie that goes with it, A decided to name ours Chippy as well.

Where's Chippy? A's behavior has gotten much better since Chippy's been around. If she refuses to do something, all it takes is a gentle reminder that Chippy is watching. I love it!

Dressing Up at 38 weeks

We had a wedding to go to when I was 38 weeks pregnant. Carrying an extra 45 lbs at this point, I was definitely dreading getting dressed up. I refused to buy a dress I would never wear again so I opted for my go-to dress for this pregnancy. This black, Herve Leger-esque bandage dress from Forever21 was THE best find. I wore it so much during this pregnancy (shown here and here). I love how it's just a great base and you can layer anything over it to completely transform the look.

For this wedding look, I added a thin studded belt turned around so the studs were in front and the buckle in the back. I topped it off with a black blazer and patent royal blue flats (not shown) for a pop of color. There was no way I could squeeze my swollen feet into heels. Speaking of hands and feet, they don't look swollen anymore but I still can't put my rings on or wear many of my shoes 4 weeks post partum. Is this normal??

Introducing Our New Addition!

A's expression says it all.
It's been an adjustment period for us all...especially little A, who doesn't seem so little anymore.

Sorry for the long hiatus. I was so tired towards the end of my pregnancy. Plus, I thought I was in labor every other day for weeks on end. I was that girl that went to the hospital (twice!) thinking I was in labor only to get sent home both times! I doubt anyone cares to read the labor story but if you're interested, let me know and I'll do a post on it.

Anywhoo...baby D is exactly 4 weeks today and it's been a roller coaster ride.

Some of the Ups:

- Getting to know our baby girl, D. So far, she has been such an easy baby and I'm so thankful for that. She's also pretty constipated so she passes A LOT of gas which keeps us pretty entertained...except when I'm alone with her at Costco and she farts loudly in her stroller and people turn around thinking it's me. Not cool, D. Not cool.

- My amazing mom who came to stay for 5 weeks to cook and clean and help with the kids. SO beyond grateful! I dropped her off at the airport today and after she hugged me, I left her standing in the rain and ran into my car because tears were streaming down my face and I was too embarrassed for her to see that. I was so thankful but it felt awkward to say that to her so I didn't say anything at all. In the Korean culture, we don't really show a lot of emotion amongst family members so there I was in my car, her out in the rain, both of us shooing each other to leave first.

Some of the Downs:

- Learning to balance caring for a newborn and a (very demanding) toddler. When A came to the hospital, she was fine initially. But after seeing everyone fawn other baby D nonstop, A crawled into a corner of the room and said "I'm sad. Mommy, you're not my best friend anymore. I don't like you." over and over again. It was so heartbreaking. After being used to being with me 24/7, it is a huge adjustment for her. I would appreciate any tips you guys have!

- My first experience with Mastitis! It was awful!!

Overall, it's been amazing and exhausting all at once. I hope to find time to blog more frequently and once I fit into non-maternity clothes, I hope to get back to doing more fashion posts as well. I've missed you all my bloggie friends and I'm thankful for whoever is still out there that's reading this.

Missoni for Target

Yes, I was that mom that dragged her toddler out of the house at 7:30 am for Missoni. We got to my neighborhood Target at 7:45 to see this...

Quickly changed plans and headed to the next closest Target a couple miles away. Called my girlfriends, telling them to reroute as well. Girlfriend T gets to 2nd Target to find only 5 people in line. Yes!! Meanwhile, I'm caught in traffic and it's 7:58 am (Target opens at 8). No!!

Finally arrive at 8:03 am. After grabbing at the womens section, I tell A to run (she thinks this is a fun game. Score!) with me to the shoe department. Then, we run to accessories.

While waiting for the elevator to get to the home department upstairs, I give her a lollipop for her ability to keep up and not throw a tantrum during this high stress situation. You heard me right. A lollipop for my 2 year old at 8 am. Not my proudest hour as a mom but sometimes, you gotta do what you gotta do. and yes, that is my cart full of shoes!

Here's what I ended up with! The poncho, matching skirts for me and A, ballet flats for me and A, onesie for baby #2, 2 plates and a make up bag. I was dying for a throw and have not given up completely yet.

Beds, Beds, Beds!

Hubbie and I decided to upgrade to a king size bed and we are beyond excited! I love the hubs and all but we've both expanded quite a bit since we got married 5 years ago and have outgrown our queen size bed. The mattress is ordered and ready to go (yay for labor day sales!) but I've been going back and forth over the bed frame decision.

I fell in love with upholstered headboards years ago and finally have a chance to call one my own. I will post another time about my dream beds that are over our price range but for now, I need immediate practical help. Please vote on your favorite bed!!

Bed 1: The Tate

I used to be all about clean, mid century lines but recently, I've been leaning more towards classically elegant styles (think the Elysian hotel) which you'll see in the next 2 picks.

Bed 2: The Colette

I've been in love with this bed for years but I think it looks a bit awkward in the king size. It looks perfect in the full or queen. Am I being crazy?

Bed 3: Crown King Bed

They don't have a sample at the stores and it has to be custom made so I have to buy it sight unseen and have no option to return. Risky!

Please help us choose a bed or if there are other beds in a similar price range, please forward my way. Thanks!!

Rainy Summer Day

I went back to see the previous post where I wore the same vest. It turns out I was wearing almost an identical outfit minus the extra 500 pounds I've been carrying around. I'm definitely missing the slimmer side of me and can't wait to get back in shape after baby #2 is out!

I'm 31 weeks today and can't wait to meet this little one! By the way, is it just me or is there a crazy baby boom right now? I can name about 12-13 friends that are expecting! I'm excited that baby #2 will have lots of little friends around.

Utility Dress

I love the ruggedness of utility pieces. This dress has masculine details but the fit and length keep it fun and feminine. It's a bit short, especially with my bump but I figure I can wear it with leggings underneath too. Because it was a bit sheer and very short, I layered my Gap Body nude slip underneath. This slip has become a lifesaver and I've worn it under so many dresses that are too sheer, too low, too short, too fill in the blank.

Hubbie and I went to see "Crazy Stupid Love" the other night and it was the perfect date night movie. We laughed, we cried (okay fine, that was just me) and were completely entertained throughout. Have you seen it? What did you think??

New Addition!

Now isn't that a lovely sight? A pregnant woman with a death grip on her box of cupcakes.

It's been consistently in the 90's here in Chicago and we are dying of heat over here! I can't seem to walk outdoors for more than a few minutes before sweating profusely and breathing heavily. Not my best moment. Anywhoo, this picture was taken months ago before it got so hot out and I haven't had a chance to post it until now.

I've been on the hunt for a leather jacket for a long time. I kept going back and forth between getting a cheap, fun piece or investing in a quality jacket. At the Aritzia annual private sale, I finally took the plunge and got myself this Mackage Kenya jacket. It was on sale, which helped it's cause. I can't wait till Fall hits so I can wear it again, if I can get my sausage arms through the sleeves that is.

Maternity and the Maxidress

I squeezed into this non-maternity, non-stretch maxi dress for a kiddie backyard pool party a couple of weeks ago. I think if I tried to wear it now, there's a decent likelihood of seams ripping. Not my idea of a good time. Up to this point, I've been trying to incorporate as much of my non-maternity clothes into the mix but I think at 25 weeks, those days are gone.

In other news, I've been contemplating how to transform A's bedroom to accommodate another little girl. We absolutely love our neighborhood (Bucktown in Chicago) and love our condo (see pics here) so we decided to stay put for at least a little while longer. The only issue is having the girls share a room when they have different sleep schedules and whatnot. Do any of you have experiences sleeping 2 young children in the same room? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!!

It's About Time!

I've been wanting an oversized gold watch for years but felt a little guilty. I remember when I received my Cartier Santos watch almost 10 years ago, thinking that this was the kind of watch you wear forever.
