we spent weeks with their wonderful architect and fabulous building manager getting the plans done; we had an all-hands-on-deck move-in last weekend with every doctor, nurse, business manager and receptionist in the practice. And now here we are! Up on the hill, right on the edge of town, at 7444 Dexter-Ann Arbor Road.

This practice is centrally located in our patient community, easy to get to, and brand new. We have a big well-lit welcome area, 4 beautiful exam rooms, and even a small gym where we'll encourage patient fitness. Shelly Schwartz, who painted the exam rooms in Chelsea, is busy finishing murals on our clean blue walls: so far, we love the dinosaur ones best.

Because this office is bigger than the others in Chelsea or Ann Arbor, and because we have expanded hours--we're open from 8:00-6:00 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and from 10:00-5:00 on Wednesday--we should be able to accommodate everybody. Thank all of you so much for being part of our patient family. We hope you like our new home.

The Chamber of Commerce has arranged a ribbon cutting at our front doors at noon on Wednesday. Stop by if you get a chance. We can't wait.

Thomashow will hold its first flu clinic in Ann Arbor, on Saturday, October 11, from 8:45-11:00 a.m. As usual, you can sign up in the office or call to make an appointment.

Because flu viruses start circulating in the fall, it's best to get a shot soon after the vaccines become available in October. Flu season usually peaks around January or February, but it takes about 2 weeks for the shot to have an effect, and immunity should last through spring.

All 2014-2015 influenza vaccines protect against these 3 strains:

an A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)pdm09-like virus

an A/Texas/50/2012 (H3N2)-like virus

a B/Massachusetts/2/2012-like virus.

Starting this season, the CDC recommends using the nasal spray vaccine (LAIV) for healthy children 2 through 8. Others do just as well with a shot. Vaccination risks are too high for children under 6 months, so it's especially important for the people they live with to get vaccinated themselves.

If you can't make this clinic, call anytime to schedule a visit in Ann Arbor or Chelsea.

http://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/season/

To keep black-legged ticks away from your kids, you might:

Avoid their habitats--they like game trails and bushy spots

Do a thorough check after you get back from a hike--look under the arms, behind the knees and between the legs, in and around the ears, and especially in the hair

Check clothes, shoes, packs and pets--some of which can be washed and tumble dried

Shower your kids, and yourself, within two hours of being outdoors

IF YOU DO FIND A TICK, there's a right way to remove it. Put tweezers near its head, and gently pull it off.

Symptoms of Lyme disease include fever and fatigue, headache, heart palpitations, pain or swelling in large joints, loss of muscle tone (Bell's palsy) in the face, and erythema migrans--or "bull's-eye" rash, with concentric rings of redness around the target bite. Most of those symptoms show up in the first few days or weeks; untreated, the infection can spread to the nervous system and heart.

The good news: Most cases of Lyme disease can be treated successfully with a short course of antibiotics.

Around the office, we've started to eat nuts. We like pistachios, walnuts, almonds, macadamia nuts, brazil nuts, hazelnuts, cashews and pecans. We like them, partly, because they're tasty. And we like them, partly because they're good for our hearts.

As it turns out:

Nuts are packed with antioxidants--which protect against the cell damage that contributes to heart disease.

Nuts are rich in omega-3 fatty acids--often found in fish--which prevent arrhythmias, another cause of heart attacks.

Most nuts are loaded with monounsaturated and polyunsaturated, or "good" fats, that can help lower LDL, or "bad" cholesterol.

Many nuts contain vitamin E, which helps stop the development of plaques.

Even better: A new Harvard study suggests that people who eat nuts are less likely to die than people who don't. In almost 120,000 adults, tracked over nearly 30 years, the benefits of nut eating were stark. People who ate nuts less than once a week had a 7% reduction in mortality; once a week, 11%; 2-4 times a week, 13%; 5-6 times per week, 15%; and 7 or more times a week, 20%.

And nut eaters stayed slimmer, believe it or not!

<a href="http://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2013/11/eating-nuts-reduces-risk-of-death/"

Memory related brain structures appeared to shrink and collapse inward, possibly reflecting a decrease in neurons. The younger these teenagers were when they started using marijuana, the more abnormally their brain regions were shaped.

After adjusting for maternal intelligence, home environment and other social and demographic factors, breastfed children performed significantly better on intelligence assessments over the first few years of life. 3-year-olds scored an extra 0.21 points for every month they'd been breastfed, on the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test; and 7-year-olds added an extra 0.35 verbal points, and an extra 0.29 nonverbal points, for every month at the breast, on the Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test.

As the researchers sum up: "Our results support a causal relationship of breastfeeding duration with receptive language and verbal and nonverbal intelligence later in life."

Vaginal delivery has been shown to have similar effects.

And the effects may be additive. In the Swedish study, children born vaginally ADHD

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, diagnoses are on the rise. New data from the CDC, or Centers for Disease Control, show that nearly 1 in 5 high school boys in the US, and almost 1 in 10 school age children overall, have been given a medical diagnosis of ADHD. The diagnosis is twice as common in boys (15%) as in girls (7%), and it rises with age—doubling in both boys and girls from early childhood (ages 4-9) to late teenage (14-17) years. Rates in Michigan are among the highest in the US.

But rates in the southwest are remarkably low. A new study shows that states with high solar intensity, like California and Arizona, have much lower rates of ADHD than states with low solar intensity, like Michigan or Ohio. Sunlight seems to have a protective effect, accounting for as much as 34% to 57% of the variance in ADHD risk. And the same effect shows up internationally: children in sunny countries, like Mexico and Spain, are at much lower risk than children in cloudy countries, like France or the Netherlands—where the study was done.

Researchers suggest that children in cloudy countries should get out more. "Exposure to more intense early day natural light, such as might occur by asking them to walk their dog in the morning or to walk or ride their bikes to school instead of being driven, could be beneficial." hospital visits are becoming more common, and there have already been 18 pediatric deaths.

Closer to home, 27 patients have been hospitalized since September for flu in Washtenaw County, and the number of emergency room visits is higher.

The best way for us to stay healthy, as always, is to:

1) Practice good hygiene: wash your hands!

2) Stay home and rest if you get sick

3) Get a flu shot or flu mist if you haven't had one

4) See your doctor within 24 hours of fever or flu symptoms. In some cases, flu can be treated with antivirals by your physician

The influenza vaccine, which is supposed to be a good fit for the circulating H3N2, H1N1 and B strain viruses, should be fully effective 2 weeks after vaccination. And antivirals, like Tamiflu, which can shorten the severity and duration of symptoms, can be prescribed for children as young as one month. But they're most effective if started within 48 hours. So give us a call if you haven't been immunized, or as soon as you're sick. A flu shot or flu mist will help prevent the infection; and an antiviral will help stop it in its tracks.

LINKS:

http://www.cdc.gov/flu/spotlights/flu-activity-picks-up.htm

Our diets effect how we feel every day, and have an enormous effect on our long term health.

And as most of us know, or should know, what we mothers eat during pregnancy effects the health of our babies. To a surprising extent! As it turns out, babies who are smaller at birth tend to be at higher risk of insulin resistance, Type 2 diabetes, hypertension and stroke. Those babies gain weight faster after birth--and they keep on gaining, especially in environments full of food.

Once upon a time, babies who were "hungry" in utero were more likely to be "hungry" after birth. Mothers who lived in poor environments had smaller babies, and those babies ate voraciously as soon as they came out. Then they kept eating--which, once upon a time, made sense, because where the pickin's are lean, it's a good thing to lay down fat whenever you can. Here and now, on the other hand, babies are highly unlikely to starve. High sugar, high fat foods follow us wherever we go. And babies who are "programmed" to eat voraciously eat too much.

There are 2 ways to fix that. One is to tell mothers not to diet while they're pregnant--especially over the last few months. The other is to watch what our kids eat, and keep them away from high sugars and high fats. Doing both would probably be smart.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SElPyWyz1lE

http://www.amazon.com/Mismatch-Lifestyle-Diseases-Peter-Gluckman/dp/0199228388

Flu Clinics, October Dates

Summer's over, it's time for a flu shot!

Our first clinic dates are set:

In Chelsea: Saturday, the 20th of October, from 9:30 - 10:30

In Ann Arbor: Saturday, the 27th of October, from 9:00 - 11:00

Sign up sheets are available in both offices, and you can call anytime to make an appointment.

Both flu vaccines and flu mists are available, in both the Ann Arbor and Chelsea offices.
<font size="2" On Thanksgiving Day, and on other days, it's best to find an alternative to pop. Drinking Coke, Pepsi, other colas has been linked to obesity, diabetes, heart disease and stroke. And as we know, children are often the biggest consumers of soft drinks. Some children drink sodas not just at dinner time, but all day long. According to a recent CDC study, about half of the US population drinks at least one "sugared beverage" daily; and boys 12-19 are the worst offenders, averaging almost two cans of pop a day.
">There are so many good reasons for kids to go outside in the summer. That's where the lakes, rivers and playing fields are. It's so much easier to swim, kayak or run outdoors than in the living room. And it's so much harder to develop juvenile obesity, or diabetes.

Besides which, there now appears to be another reason to get kids out of the house. Exposure to sunlight may make them less myopic. Just 1/4 of Americans were nearsighted in the 1970s, but more than 40% of us are nearsighted now. Why is that? Because we're spending more time under artificial lights.

Natural light helps a child's developing eyes maintain a correct distance between the developing retina and lens. That keeps vision in focus. When a child spends too much time indoors, the distance between the lens and retina becomes too long. So faraway objects start to blur.
<div style="text-align: left;

<div style="text-align: left; but don't worry, the new flu vaccines protect against swine flu as well as the other flu strains.

Influenza got a slow start this year, with just a few cases reported last fall, but over the last few weeks it's picked up speed. Flu is now circulating in all 50 states, and it's widespread in 37. Around 200,000 Americans are hospitalized, and around 37,000 die, as a result of influenza in an average year.

Flu activity will continue into March. Early signs include fever and chills, sore throat and cough, runny or stuffy nose, head and body aches, vomiting, diarrhea and overall fatigue. Tamiflu and other antivirals work best if they're started as soon as possible after the first symptoms appear. And It's still not too late to prevent them altogether, with a quick flu shot.

DON'T: Get addicted to holiday drinks! WebMD says a Peppermint White Chocolate Mocha can pack 430 calories, an Eggnot Latte can pack 450 calories, and a Peppermint Mocha Hot Chocolate or Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate can pack 350 calories apiece--IF you skip the whipped cream and order lowfat milk!

DO: Give age appropriate presents. And avoid giving or receiving toys with small parts that kids can choke on, or sharp edges that kids can cut themselves on, or other dangerous toys--like the ones listed on the link below.

DON'T: Forget to wash your hands, or use hand sanitizer, whenever you're about to pop something in your mouth--or your child's mouth. Holiday crowds are wonderful, but viruses and bacteria love them as much as we do. And don't forget to get flu shots. Influenza loves holiday crowds, too.

Have a safe and wonderful holiday season! We're so grateful to be a part of the Ann Arbor and Chelsea communities, and a part of your wonderful families. Take care of yourselves, and we'll see you all next year.
