CAREER OPPORTUNITIES: Join us at our Job Fair on May
31 to meet and greet with area employers

Career Development Services’ upcoming Job Fair will be on May 31, where we’ll be hosting local employers who are looking for interns as well as part-time and full-time employees. If you’re looking for a position for this summer and beyond, this is one of the most important events to prepare for and attend.

Employers that have confirmed attendance include Comcast, Cintas, First Financial Group, and the Pennsylvania Department of Labor. With that roster, this is a great opportunity to network and find out what employers are looking for in new hires. We wanted to offer a few tips to help you prepare for the Job Fair.

Reach out to Career Development Services. We can help you with personalized one-on-one sessions for interview training, elevator speech prep, and more. We’ll also review your resume with you before the Job Fair, which is very important if you’re looking to hand it out at the event. The earlier you begin your outreach, the more time we’ll have to help you.

Prepare your business attire. Be sure to wear an interview-appropriate outfit to the Job Fair, such as a suit. If you don’t have one, don’t let that stop you from attending. Please contact us because we have relationships with nonprofit organizations such as MenzFit and Career Wardrobe that can help you get a proper outfit to wear.

Embrace your resources. Our Career Development Services page is just one great resource you can turn to when job hunting. We’ve also covered a number of job- and career-related topics on our blog, and continue to add to these each month. We also just started a Twitter feed at @CDSPeirce to share even more career tips and advice. Be sure to bring any questions you have to the Job Fair, and keep the tips on hand during your job search.

Attending events like the Job Fair will help you develop personally and professionally, as well as network with colleagues and employers. With Commencement around the corner, it’s more important than ever to take advantage of these opportunities. We’re happy to help you prepare, and hope to see you at our upcoming Job Fair event!

Voting is now open for Peirce Idol 2013!

Then vote for your favorite, and encourage your Facebook friends to do the same.

The deadline to vote is May 19<tbd tk="">, so be sure to visit the blog and Facebook page on May 20 <tbd tk="">to find out who this year’s winner is.

Almost everyone has heard of Twitter, but not everyone knows how it works and how it can be used professionally. However, Twitter can be among your more effective career development tools. And it doesn’t matter whether you’re interested in strengthening yourself as a professional in your industry or finding a new position.

In fact, Twitter is especially relevant for job seekers, as The Wall Street Journal reports that Twitter is becoming the new job board and the new résumé. It’s more important than ever to know how to use this tool effectively, especially so close to Commencement.

That’s why we’re hosting a free “Tweeting for Career Success” workshop here at the College on May 16 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in rooms 51 and 52. Our featured speaker for the event is Rich Levin, a social media pioneer with over 40,000 followers on social media -- 21,000 of them on Twitter alone. Rich is Senior Vice President at Gregory FCA, the largest public relations firm in the Philadelphia region. In his 27 years as a journalist and media consultant, Rich has helped executives at some of the country’s top companies become more effective communicators. And effective communication is the key to professional success.

During the workshop, Rich will cover how to:

Start using Twitter effectively

Grow your Twitter following

Use Twitter to connect with people who share your personal and professional interests

And much more!

Join us for this hands-on session and learn how to make Twitter one of the most powerful tools in your communications arsenal. RSVP by May 13 to peirce.edu/twitter4biz.

Media spotlight on Peirce College's students and faculty

IN THE NEWS: Where Peirce students and faculty members
have been covered in the media in April

Local and national media have been covering some of the good work of our students and faculty members over the past month. We wanted to share a few of these stories with you in case you missed them.

College is a family affair for the Johnsons. Metro reporter Natalie Shure interviewed Marketa and Carlos Johnson, a mother and son who attend Peirce together, to hear about how they balance work, home responsibilities, and earning their college degrees. For more on their story, you can flip back to the blog post we wrote about Carlos and Marketa earlier this year.

4 ways college students should spend their tax refund. If you've gotten or are expecting a tax refund this year, consider spending it on school-related expenses. FOXBusiness reporter Emily Driscoll tapped Chanel Greene, the Manager of the Office of Financial Aid here at Peirce, about how students should use their 2013 tax refund. Chanel suggested paying off student loans or keeping some tucked away for an emergency to ensure there are no financial roadblocks to completing your education.

Transit-oriented enjoyment in Wayne. Jovanna Acchione Bevilacqua, a 1981 alumna of the College; her husband; and her son own Fabio & Danny's Station Cafe, located on the Philadelphia-bound side of the Main Line tracks in Wayne, Pa. Philadelphia Inquirer Staff Writer Jeremy Dillon covered the restaurant's recent decision to host Friday-night BYOB dinners, and the impact recent transit-oriented developments have had on local businesses in Wayne. We're so proud of the strides that our alumni make in the Philadelphia community!
How to get the most out of on-campus services. Uva Coles, Vice President, Student Services, gave her advice to FOXBusiness reporter Emily Driscoll about how students can get the most out of on-campus student services. Uva touches on the importance of visiting Career Development Services, a tutoring center (like Peirce's Walker Center), and the Financial Aid office to set you up for success and help you get the most of your college experience.

SECRET TO SUCCESS: Professional women from across the
Philadelphia area joined us to discuss leadership, success, and motivation

Ninety-four students, faculty members, staff, partners, and alumni came out for another successful Women in Leadership panel discussion here at the College on April 16. We heard a lot of positive feedback from attendees. In fact, many said the Women in Leadership event is their favorite event of the year, and this year’s was the best one yet.

There was great synergy among our panelists, and our moderator, Sara Lomax-Reese, President of WURD Radio, LLC, kept the discussion moving. Our panelists this year were:

Beatrice Romao, Retail Market Manager, TD Bank

Tina Simmons Waters, Senior Vice President Human Performance, Comcast

Jill Michal, President and CEO, United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania

Allison Pokras, Executive Director, Operation Understanding

Stacy Holland, President & CEO, Philadelphia Youth Network

Dr. Patricia Rucker, Senior Vice President of Academic Advancement & Provost, Peirce College

We shot photos throughout the event of our panelists and audience members their views throughout the night, and wanted to share them with you.

We also heard some tidbits of advice throughout the evening that we think every professional woman can benefit from, whether or not you were in attendance.

As a woman, it's OK to ask for things at work in a professional manner. Whether it's a promotion, a raise, or more responsibility, it's up to you to speak up for yourself.

Perfect is the enemy of good.

Success is knowing what makes you happy and then being happy when you get it.

Success isn't just about uncovering my potential -- it's about uncovering the potential of others.

No one is perfect -- perfection is a façade. No matter how high up you get in the food chain, there will always be days where you feel something isn't getting accomplished, and that's OK. Take pride in your accomplishments each day.

Find a personal and professional mentor. It should be someone that can give you some tough love when you need it, and will help you reach your potential.

To find a great position, you have to volunteer, get exposure, and figure out if it's really what you want. It's also extremely important to network. Talk to professionals who are doing what you want to do and then connect.

Manage your time by compartmentalizing your duties -- focus on work at work, and your family at home. And remember that you might need to change your strategy as your life and responsibilities change. But it's most important to figure out what you're not willing to step back on. Then ask for help to handle the rest.

Make people remember your reaction to the negative. Always take the high road in business.

Find it, make it, own it, do it!

Remember, there's always an opportunity to raise your hand.

This event is important because it gives real-world advice from women who have been there. Whether you're changing careers later in life, supporting your family while getting your education, or recreating your personal brand, chances are that one of the women on this panel shared some advice that relates to you.

We also presented two leadership awards as part of the event. Congratulations to Jo-Ann Williams, a former Paralegal studies student, for winning the Alumni Leadership award, as well as Ashley Arntz, a Paralegal studies student who will be graduating this year, for winning the Student Leadership award.

Thanks to everyone who came out and participated in our 2013 Women in Leadership event. It was a truly special evening, and we hope you took away some valuable advice about your career, family, and work-life balance.

Welcoming 24 new Peirce students into the National Paralegal Honor Society

I’m very happy to announce that 24 Peirce students have now been inducted into the National Paralegal Honor Society. They’ve joined the Peirce chapter of the organization -- Lambda Epsilon Chi (LEX). The induction ceremony took place on April 19, and we were proud to add these high-caliber students into Peirce’s LEX chapter, which now has 120 members.

Rebecca K. Watson was this year's keynote speaker, and she was inducted as an honorary member into the organization. Rebecca has been a paralegal for the past 17 years and currently works with Marks, O'Neill, O'Brien, Doherty & Kelly, P.C., in Pennsauken, N.J. She graduated from Peirce in 2003 with a bachelor's degree in Paralegal Studies.

Since that time, she has served as a member of the Peirce College Paralegal Studies Advisory Committee. She has also served on the Board of Directors of the South Jersey Paralegal Association (SJPA) for the past 10 years. While on the SJPA board, she has served as a representative at several National Federation of Paralegal Associations conventions, and lectures on the evolving role of the paralegal and the paralegal profession at local colleges. Rebecca was also recently appointed to the Board of the Philadelphia Chapter of HOPE Worldwide.

We also snapped some photos of the inductees each accepting their certificates:

Peirce’s LEX chapter was founded in 2011 to connect paralegal students to national scholarship, networking, and employment opportunities. It also looks great on a resume, and gives members a chance to get to know more about the paralegal profession.

To be eligible for LEX membership, inductees must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher within the Paralegal Studies bachelor’s degree program, or the Post-Bachelor’s Certificate program. Peirce’s chapter of LEX is sponsored by the American Association for Paralegal Education (AAfPE).

Congratulations to our newest inductees -- You should be proud of this accomplishment! If you’re interested in learning more about LEX, please contact Professor Carol Sherman at CSherman@Peirce.edu.

LEAD IN BUSINESS: Our Men in Leadership event will
cover issues that speak to men today and how those
issues impact their lives.

Peirce’s annual Women in Leadership panel discussion is one of our most popular events. After seeing the positive response from the community, many of our male students thought it would be great to add another event that fosters leadership, covers issues that speak to them, and focuses on how those issues impact their lives. So with the hard work of our Student Leadership Program, we’re happy to introduce our first Men in Leadership event, which will be completely facilitated by men here at the College.

The Men in Leadership event will be held on April 26 from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. in rooms 51 and 52 and is free for Peirce students. The workshops will help prepare attendees for their academic and career journeys and provide the opportunity to network. Each attendee can choose to attend two of the following workshops:

Networking and Business Etiquette. Even the most skilled business professional might pick up something new from this workshop. We'll cover how to network in any setting, the do's and don'ts of professional attire, and how to prepare for new business trends.

Chartering Your Career and Preparing for the Next Step. How can you make decisions in your career now that you can build on down the road? This session will cover the topic of chartering your career, as well as how to structure a strong, current resume that represents you, your experience, and your goals.

Man Up to Your Health and Wellness. Wellness and nutrition are very important for men. This workshop will talk about health and how it impacts you as a student, community member, and employee. The conversation will cover the importance of exercise, annual checkups, and hygiene, as well as how to reduce stress in your school, job, or community. We'll also open the floor up to attendees to talk about any health concerns and issues they might want to discuss.

I Am a Man. It can be hard to admit, but male images and stereotypes play a significant role in many students' self-image. We'll talk about what it means to be a male in today's society, and how societal pressures dictate attitudes, behaviors, thoughts, and responsibilities.

Each workshop will have panelists that include Peirce students, alumni, faculty and staff, and community members. Our guest speaker will be Mr. Jim Smith, Jr., an author, personal power speaker, trainer, and consultant. He’s the author of the best-selling book, “The No Excuse Guide to Success: No Matter What Your Boss or Life Throws at You.” The book has been nominated for the 2013 NAACP Image Awards for the "Literary Work - Instructional" category. Our master of ceremonies will be Dr. Patrick Coyle, Associate Professor, Information Technology here at Peirce.

We’re excited to offer a new event with workshops where male students can relate one-on-one and open up about major issues. Attendees should be able to walk away with new or strengthened leadership skills, a few new professional connections, and confidence in the potential they have to be great students and leaders in their jobs and communities.

If you’re interested in attending our Men in Leadership event, please RVSP to Margie Pannell at MrPannell@Peirce.edu or (215) 670-9221.

LEARN TOGETHER: Our cancer registry
training was a success!

Our Health Programs events are in full swing to help students learn about health career possibilities in Philadelphia and help them begin getting involved in the industry.

Peirce College recently hosted a two-day training course for Peirce students to learn about a career as a cancer registrar and the basics of cancer data collection. Twenty students and four health programs faculty members participated in the training, and we were thrilled at their overwhelmingly positive response.

If you’re wondering what a cancer registrar is, it’s a person who’s highly trained in data collection and management. It’s their job to report cancer statistics and they are employed at every level in the cancer surveillance community, including hospitals, state cancer registries, regulatory agencies, accrediting organizations, researchers, pharmaceutical firms, software vendors, and contract service providers. Many people don’t know about the career path of cancer registry, but it’s a growing field with tremendous opportunities for certified professionals.
The event was co-hosted by the Pennsylvania Cancer Registry (PCR), the Pennsylvania Department of Health’s cancer data collection system that records incidences of cancer statewide and provides data to help physicians, researchers, and other health professionals. On hand we had Wendy Aldinger, RHIA, CTR, who is the Quality Assurance Manager for the Pennsylvania Cancer Registry.

She led the training, and was accompanied by guest speakers Dina M. Pakstis, CTR, Special Projects Coordinator at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and Fran Guiles, RHIA, CTR, Manager, Oncology Data Services at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. These professionals shared their knowledge with students throughout the training, and it was a great opportunity for attendees to network with representatives from large Philadelphia health organizations.

We snapped some photos of our attendees engaging in this special, hands-on training that we wanted to share with you:

At the conclusion of the training, attendees received a certificate of completion signed by Ms. Aldinger. Although it doesn’t make them qualified to sit for the official exam, it does demonstrate to a prospective employer that these students got specialized training and have a degree of familiarity with cancer registry.

Many students in our Health Information Technology program have a great academic foundation to get into this line of work. If you’re interested in finding out more information about cancer registry, visit the National Cancer Registrar Association’s website. We’re also planning to offer an evening training like this one during the 2013-2014 academic year.

We appreciate everyone who helped make this training a success, and we want to especially thank Wendy, Dina, and Fran for helping Peirce students learn about this career field.

Announcing Lisa Nutter as Peirce College’s 2013 Commencement speaker

PHILLY'S FIRST LADY: Ms. Lisa Nutter will be
Peirce College's 2013 Commencement speaker

We’ve been hard at work finalizing our 2013 Commencement program, and are very excited to announce who will be giving the keynote address on that special evening in June. Our 2013 Commencement speaker will be Lisa Nutter, President of Philadelphia Academies, Inc., and the First Lady of Philadelphia.

As President of Philadelphia Academies, Inc. -- a non-profit youth development organization that works in Philadelphia's public high schools to motivate young people to stay engaged in school -- Ms. Nutter aims to expand economic opportunities for students and set them on a positive path. Prior to joining Philadelphia Academies, Inc., Ms. Nutter worked in a variety of industries, including education, community organizing, human services, community development, and arts and culture.

Ms. Nutter is passionate about issues related to social change and youth development, and is active on a local and national scale. She currently serves on the board of directors of the Women's Community Revitalization Project, Big Picture Philadelphia. She also serves on the Advisory Council for the Pennsylvania Conference for Women.

Ms. Nutter’s commitment to education and community building makes her the perfect fit to speak to the Peirce community on Commencement day, and we couldn't be more honored to have her. We believe she’s making great strides for the City of Philadelphia, and we’re excited to hear her speak on the Kimmel Center stage.

Peirce College’s 2013 Commencement will be held on Monday, June 10 at 6:45 p.m. at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia. Keep your eyes on the blog for our continued coverage leading up to and after the big event!

Auditions are open for 2013 Peirce Idol! More details about where to watch the audition videos and the voting process will be coming soon here on the blog, so stay tuned!

Last year's winner was DeShayla Avant, a 2012 graduate with her bachelor's degree in Paralegal Studies. Our 2011 Peirce Idol was Morraye Berrios, a Business Administration student.

OVERCOMING ODDS: Diana Kirkland has overcome many challenges
in her life to earn her college degree at Peirce College

Some people are naturally upbeat and spread their positive energy to those around them. Diana Kirkland -- mother of six, grandmother of three (soon to be four), military veteran, Peirce student, and our next Featured Learner -- is one of them. We recently sat down with Diana to hear more about her story.

Diana first learned about Peirce in the late 1980s when a family member attended the College. Although she was interested in a college degree, she decided to enlist in the United States Navy instead. She served on active duty from 1988 to 1991 and in the reserves from 1991 to 1994, before becoming a mother and raising her six children in Philadelphia.

But life became a struggle for Diana as she battled an addiction to drugs and alcohol. College was still on her mind, and she began an educational program to earn a paralegal certification at Berean Institute. Unfortunately, her addiction didn’t allow her to complete them.

2010 opened a new door for Diana. She got sober and her youngest daughter didn’t need as much care at home, setting her on the path to earning her college degree. Diana attended the TRIO Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) Program at the University of Pennsylvania, a preparatory course for veterans who want to go to college. The program prepares veterans in areas that include math, computers, science, literature, and reading so they’re able to pass college entrance exams.

After a year in the VUB program, Diana’s instructors thought she had progressed enough and was ready for college. Around that time, the program took its students on a field trip to Peirce, and Diana got to know the College’s faculty and staff firsthand through the day’s events.

“I was just really impressed with how the staff reached out to the students and I felt the staff was genuine in wanting the students to succeed,” said Diana. “They all said that they had open door policies and that they would bend over backwards to help us with whatever we needed. They had a bunch of resources available for us to reach out if we needed help, and at that point, I decided that this was the college for me. To me, it’s more like a family rather than a college.”

Jim Mergiotti, Peirce’s President & CEO, specifically stood out to Diana. “The main person who stuck out to me at first was President Mergiotti because he said he has an open door policy and if you need anything, you can always drop by his office,” Diana continued. “[At other colleges she attended] you never saw the president. It was so big and there were so many people, you couldn’t really get to know the faculty and staff besides your professors. When I got to Peirce, it’s intimate and has students who are in the workforce and want to get their degrees. That struck me because I had other things that I was doing at the time and it just seemed like it would really fit into my life. I just really felt like I belonged here.”

Diana enrolled at Peirce in 2012. She’s pursing her bachelor’s degree in Paralegal Studies, and plans to graduate by 2016. In addition to taking her classes, she’s involved in the Peirce Leadership program, is a Work-Study student in the Walker Center, is a Peirce Ambassador, and takes care of one of her grandchildren for a good portion of the week.

She’s enjoying the rigor of her program, and is currently on the Dean’s List. “I enjoy learning about the law and how it applies to people in our country,” she said. “I’ve always been excited about that. As for my program, I enjoy the faculty and staff because they reach out and they are very supportive. It’s not an easy program and I didn’t expect it to be, but they make it so I can understand it and I can relate it to life.”

Diana has found that the professors at Peirce are so supportive; she has even been given help on an assignment over the weekend. “I talked to Professor Ivy Kempf last semester in one of my first paralegal classes,” she said. “I was having a problem with an assignment and I wasn’t really sure of how to handle it, so I called her. I left her a message and she called me back. And because it was the weekend, I wasn’t sure she would call me back, but she did. I was thrilled because it allowed me to get the assignment done.”

She has also gotten involved in her fair share of activities at Peirce. “The Walker Center is my best friend. I come to get my homework done. I felt a connection with the people in the Walker Center, and the next thing you know, I became a Work-Study here as well. Whatever you decide you want to do, they’ll push you to do that. I said that I wanted to be a person that could speak in front of a crowd, so Ms. Juanita Wooten told me to take the communications classes and gave me my first chance at public speaking at an FYI engagement. Whatever I mention that I want to do, there’s somebody here that pushes me to achieve that goal.”

Three years sober and two years into her degree program, Diana has overcome quite a few obstacles on her path to earning a college degree. She has a few pieces of advice for students that she wants to share, whether or not they come from a military background.

Diana feels she was especially supported as a military member at Peirce, and wants to share what she has learned with others. “Sometimes it’s hard for a person to be in the military and then come out and transition back into civilian life,” Diana said. “It’s really hard for military members to do that. But don’t forget that there are a lot of programs and incentives out here for military members to go back to school and to achieve something new. Peirce has lots of information available on its website about the types of support military members can find.”

Diana ended our interview with this thought: “What’s the point in coming to college if you want to just be an average student? I want to be better than average. That’s my motto.” Lucky for Diana, she’s much more than average, and a true inspiration to anyone who thinks earning a college degree is beyond their reach. Thanks for sharing your story with us, Diana!

Youth Action recognizes Peirce College with its 2013 Inspiring Service Award

Youth Action is a local non-profit organization making significant headway in our area by inspiring Philadelphians to make a positive impact on the community. It's a mission that we support at Peirce College, so we were honored when Youth Action bestowed us with its 2013 Inspiring Service Award for our significant contribution to shaping communities.

The organization sent us a letter congratulating us on this achievement, and we wanted to share an excerpt from it with you:

"This award acknowledges your steadfast commitment to supporting student civic engagement since your beginnings. The phenomenal mentoring and resources you provide to students generates their enthusiasm for leadership and service. This acknowledgement congratulates you for your achievements in service to Greater Philadelphia and ongoing support of the service work of Youth Action within our 10 years of existence …

We have an enthusiasm for individuals and organizations that support/share our mission to empower underserved students. From its inception in 1865, Peirce College has been passionate about equipping its students to make a difference in their communities, workplaces, and the world. YA admires your work in helping students develop into socially conscious leaders. It is our pleasure to honor the amazing work you are doing."

Youth Action is a student-led, non-profit organization that is designed and managed by high school and college students. Youth Action was launched in 2003 with a vision of inspiring fellow students to empower communities through civic engagement programs and service. 10 years later, that mission still exists and more than 150 members of Youth Action and 5,000 students have been impacted by its service programming.

We feel fortunate to have received this honor from Youth Action, and will be attending the organization’s 10th Anniversary Celebration on Friday, May 3 to receive the award.

LEARN TOGETHER: Our audience from last year's Women in
Leadership discussion had many questions for our panelists

We often hear that members of the Peirce community want to improve their leadership skills. So we're bringing back one of our most popular events that will help do just that -- our Women In Leadership panel discussion. Each year, accomplished women from the area come to Peirce to talk about their personal and professional goals, challenges, and achievements.

We've found in the past that sharing stories with like-minded attendees can motivate and inspire students to achieve their business goals. This year's discussion will be on April 16 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in rooms 51 and 52, and is sponsored by TD Bank. We're delighted to have an array of panelists from different industries, including business, non-profit, and education. They are:

Beatrice Romao, Retail Market Manager, TD Bank

Tina Simmons Waters, Senior Vice President Human Performance, Comcast

Jill Michal, President and CEO, United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania

Allison Pokras, Executive Director, Operation Understanding

Stacy Holland, President & CEO, Philadelphia Youth Network

Dr. Patricia Rucker, Senior Vice President of Academic Advancement & Provost, Peirce College

The panelists will speak about the key leadership skills every business professional should acquire, whether or not they believe the work-life balance can be achieved, and how the concept of the "glass ceiling" still impacts women in business today. Other topics will include the role of leadership in community building, the importance of mentors, and how women can prepare future leaders. They'll also touch on Facebook COO Sheryl Sandburg's book, "Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead" and the concept of leaning into business.

We hope this event motivates you with positive energy. Some of our panelists have overcome extreme odds to be where they are in the business world, and are excited to share their stories. It will also be a great opportunity to network, as we're opening the invitation to the community and our corporate partners, so be sure to do a little bit of homework on our panelists. We recommend coming to the event in business attire -- you never know who you will meet that could provide you with a new professional opportunity!

All attendees will receive a copy of Sheryl Sandburg's book, and have the opportunity to enter a raffle for a $50 gift card. And one current student and one alum will be awarded leadership awards for their involvement in the Peirce community.

If you're planning to attend, please RSVP to www.Peirce.edu/WIL. If you're not able to make it, keep your eyes on the blog, as we'll be posting an update after the event with photos and takeaways that our panelists shared.

The Fair will be held on Wednesday, April 10 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the College Hall Lobby.

APPLICATION PROCESS: We're sharing tips on
how to apply to a graduate program at Peirce.

We recently hosted a graduate admissions seminar at Peirce to help current and prospective students navigate the graduate school application process. For those who weren’t able to make it to the event, I wanted to share some takeaways that might help you if you’re thinking about or are currently applying for admission to a graduate program at Peirce.

Q: What do I need to apply to grad school?

A: To fulfill the application requirements here at Peirce, you’ll need:

Completed application and fee

Current resume with education and employment

Official transcripts from all institutions attended

Two completed recommendation forms

A professional essay

An interview with the Dean of Graduate Studies

2.75 or higher undergraduate or graduate GPA

You can submit your application electronically to Masters@Peirce.edu or in hard copy to the Graduate Studies Admissions Office, Peirce College, 1420 Pine Street, Philadelphia, PA 19102.
Q: How should I structure my resume?

A: To apply for graduate school, you should keep your resume between one and two pages. It should include:

Statement of objective: This should be your ultimate goal. What do you want to achieve professionally and/or personally by completing a graduate program in your chosen field? Keep your objective short and well-written.

Concise summary of qualifications: What makes you qualified for a master’s degree program? Highlight your GPA, related classes, extracurricular activities, and anything else that will make you stand out in the admissions process.

Employment in reverse chronological order: Highlight your current or most recent position first with a few bullet points about your duties and responsibilities. Work your way backwards, including all relevant employment information.

All completed education: Include any applicable two-year school, undergraduate, and graduate education that you’ve completed, including when you finished and your area of study.

Q: What do you mean by official transcripts? What do I need to provide?

A: At Peirce, we’re looking for the transcripts from all institutions you’ve attended – this includes two-year schools, undergraduate, and graduate. Your transcripts should be sent directly from the institution to Peirce. If you earned your bachelor’s degree at Peirce, we have your transcripts and will obtain them during your internal application review.

Q: Who should complete my recommendation forms?

A: Your recommendation forms should be completed by someone in a supervisory capacity. They can be someone who oversaw you in your education, such as a professor or academic advisor, or someone you know through your workplace, such as your boss or a senior colleague.

Q: What should I discuss in the application essay for graduate school?

A: Your essay should cover the following:

Professional and personal goals

Why completing a graduate degree fits with these goals

Your academic and professional preparation

We recommend that you keep your essay between one and two pages, and review your grammar, spelling, punctuation, logic, and coherence before submitting your application.

Q: What will the interview be like?

A: Many graduate schools require an interview with the program manager. Here at Peirce, I conduct interviews with prospective students. We have an easy, one-hour meeting where we’ll discuss:

Your motivation for attending graduate school.

Your academic qualifications, including your written and verbal communication skills, time management and study skills, and decision-making and problem-solving skills.

INTERN: Get hands-on experience at a Philadelphia start-up
company this summer

Interning at a start-up company can give you the opportunity to get hands-on experience, collaborate with others, and contribute to building an organization from the ground up. One opportunity to do just this is right here in our own backyard this summer: Philly StartUp Scholars, created by Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Southeastern Pennsylvania (BFTP/SEP) and Campus Philly.

The purpose of Philly StartUp Scholars is to offer college students paid internships at growing Philadelphia technology companies in BFTP’s portfolio this summer. Subject areas will include science, technology, engineering, mathematics, investment, marketing, computer and life sciences, and social media/communication. Applicants who are chosen will work within these start-ups to gain experience and network with their colleagues for future job opportunities.

You’re eligible to apply for one of these internships if you’re a current student at Peirce, or one of Campus Philly’s partner colleges and universities. Stipends of $4,500 per student will be offered to nine students selected to participate. Internships will be full-time, start in June, and run for 10 weeks.

Visit Campus Philly’s website to read more about the program and company internship opportunities, as well as to apply. And remember, Campus Philly also offers job and internship opportunities year-round, so visit its Careers page for additional postings.

ROAD MAP: Our new tool provides educational information
that's tailored to your individual needs

We launched PhillyAdultLearners.com in May 2011 to give local students information they need about earning a college degree. Since then, more than 34,000 adult learners have visited the site to learn more about how they can incorporate earning a college degree into their busy lives. But we always want to do more to support working adults in Philadelphia.

So we’ve created a new addition to PhillyAdultLearners.com, a Step-by-Step Road Map to College, available now! It provides educational information tailored to the specific needs of individual students and is available after visitors answer a few simple questions.

Every prospective adult learner has questions about college. These can include: What degrees lead to the best jobs? How do I apply to college? Can I get any financial assistance in earning my degree? What’s the best way to prepare for the college transition? How do I balance earning my degree, my full-time job, and my personal life?

This is where the Road Map comes into play. The tool starts by getting to know you. It asks you about what type of education program you’re looking for; where you are in the degree program selection process; if you’re interested in learning more about financial aid, employer tuition reimbursement, or military benefits; and more.

After you submit your answers, a detailed Road Map is sent to the email address you provide. It includes help with researching schools and programs, applying, financial aid, and career tips. With your Road Map in hand, you can use the information provided to support your education decision-making.

In addition, you’ll also have access to a host of other resources to help you plan your educational journey, avoid pitfalls, and overcome common obstacles. These include:

Inspirational stories about adult learners who are succeeding in their lifelong learning journeys

Strategies to improve your job search

Resources to manage school and work stress

Tips for getting ahead in your career

This is the latest step in our mission to support the needs of working adults in Philadelphia. If you haven't yet started earning your degree, visit PhillyAdultLearners.com today to learn how to make the right decisions about your educational future. And if you have family members, friends, or colleagues who are thinking about earning their degree but aren’t sure how to get started, encourage them to complete their own Step-by-Step Road Map to College. Give it a whirl, and tell us what you think.

How to decide between taking classes online or on-campus

ONLINE OR ON-CAMPUS: Which learning platform works
best with your lifestyle?

There are many factors you should consider when choosing whether to take each of your college classes online or on-campus. Depending on your time commitments, schedule, and learning style, you’ll probably find that one or the other is a better fit for you. And this could change as your life changes, so it’s important to understand the differences and similarities of both learning formats.

Today we’re bringing these factors to light to give you a full picture of what is offered from each. Ask yourself the following questions to see which learning platform fits best with your lifestyle at this particular moment, and which would provide you with the learning experience you’re looking for.

What’s your schedule like?

You’re best suited for online classes if … you have a lot of competing interests for your time. These days, it seems that most of us are trying to fit more commitments into less time, including a career, family, community involvement, hobbies, and other personal activities. This can be especially true if you’re an adult learner (typically defined as ages 25 and older). So if you find yourself working to balance an already-full plate, taking your classes online might be the right fit for you. Most online classes are asynchronous, which means you can log on to do your classwork at any time of the day. You can complete your schoolwork when it fits into your life, whether that is early in the morning, after the kids go to bed, or on the weekends. For example, two Peirce students, Desiree Mitchem and Rohan Mohanty, are living examples of the convenience of online learning. Flip back to their stories for more first-hand details.

You’re best suited for on-campus classes if … you enjoy a more structured learning environment. If you like having specific times each week to go to class, do your schoolwork, and meet up with classmates, you might be better suited for on-campus classes. You can have more predefined times for when you’ll focus on your education, which can give you more control over your schedule.

How do you like to engage with your classmates?

You’re best suited for online classes if … you like being able to review your answers before you share them. A major part of many online classes are discussion boards, in which students and instructors share knowledge and insight about topics at hand. When responding, you’ll be able to research your answer, which lets you learn while sharing insight information with the class. Some online classes also require students to peer review one other’s work and participate in group projects. So you’ll still get to know and engage with your classmates and instructors. And other students who are balancing busy lifestyles will be on the discussion boards at various times over the course of the week, so you can probably find someone who’s completing work late at night or early in the morning, just like you.

You’re best suited for on-campus classes if … you thrive in lively, face-to-face discussions and want in-person interaction with classmates and instructors. Some folks are able to better engage in problem solving and ideation when they’re able to bounce ideas off of others around a table, as well as read their facial and body language. If you’re the type of person who needs to interact with someone for the pieces to really click, you might consider taking classes in-person, where you’ll get to speak with peers and faculty members face-to-face.

How much do you like technology to be part of your learning experience?

You’re best suited for online classes if … the idea of web chats to discuss papers, social networks to get to know classmates, and collaborative tools to work on group projects sounds right up your alley. Technology is naturally a major part of online classes, and you might be more comfortable with the format if you like being on your smartphone, tablet, or computer often, and want to extend them to your educational endeavors. You’ll get to know classmates, work collaboratively, and experience the classroom—anytime, anywhere.

You’re best suited for on-campus classes if … you enjoy using technology but don’t want it to be such a large part of how you learn. If you prefer taking notes by hand, having hard copies of handouts, and completing tests on paper, you might prefer on-campus classes.

While these are some of the major differences between online education and campus education, there should also be some commonalities, which you’ll find from institutions that offer higher-quality programs in both learning formats. You should note these commonalities, because you might end up taking classes in both learning formats as your life changes. This is especially true of students who attend Peirce, because our students can choose to take each individual course offering online or on-campus, depending on their schedule and commitments.

So whether you’re considering online or on-campus classes, look for these common denominators as an indication of the school’s overall quality.

Accessibility to the full range of course materials: Higher-quality institutions typically design their course curriculums so that the same information is disseminated in their online and campus classrooms. This ensures all students build the same knowledge and experience the same rigor.

Highly trained instructors: Look for institutions with instructors that are highly trained to monitor the progress of their students in online and on-campus environments. If you’re taking classes online, it can be easy to forget that there’s someone on the other side of the keyboard who cares about you and wants you to succeed. Look for instructors who are easily accessible and make helping their students a priority. This includes being able to talk through email, over the phone, via a web chat, or by meeting in person—just as a classroom professor would.

A wide range of assessments: A high-quality program will offer a range of assessments that feed into students’ grades, including discussion boards, tests, quizzes, projects, and papers. What’s more, this variety should be a part of both online and campus classes. Each type of assessment demonstrates how students meet the learning objectives of a course, and focuses on helping students achieve learning outcomes.

Strong camaraderie with peers and instructors: High-quality institutions have built programs that allow students and instructors to experience camaraderie in any setting. In fact, we’ve heard stories of online students who meet their peers for the first time at graduation, and they’ve told us that it’s like they’ve known each other for years. And of course, on-campus students often meet up for coffee before class, or hold late-night study sessions before finals. Those relationships are a crucial part of the higher education experience, and you should look for an institution that lets you cultivate them through both learning platforms.

It’s important to consider these factors when choosing your learning format. But remember—as your life and commitments change, so might the learning format that works best for you. Just be sure to know your options, and look for high-quality programs that offer commonalities and flexibility where it really matters.
me to weigh in on the state of the
job market in Philadelphia.

Whether you're a college student or graduate, you probably have some questions about the state of the job market in Philadelphia and what you can do to stand out from the crowd when applying for your next work position. To help, we asked Jameel Rush, Manager Organizational Development and Effectiveness at ARAMARK, to join me for a podcast with our blogging team to discuss our thoughts on the job market from an academic and human resources perspective.

Jameel's outlook adds a great deal of weight to our discussion. He has worked in human resources for the past seven years, and is currently responsible for the employee engagement strategy implementation across ARAMARK's international operations. He's also a member of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), and sits on the Emerging Leaders/College Relations board.

In our podcast, we give advice that students can use to stand out in a crowded job market, improve their business and professional skills, and keep their confidence up during the job search -- academically and professionally. We also touch upon graduate education, and the positive impact it can have on a student's career, job search, and skillset. Jameel and I each shared some great points that we hope will resonate with you if you're searching for a job.

We're keeping our eyes on the market, and will continue to update you with information you can use to succeed in the current economic climate. Thanks to Jameel for joining us. I enjoyed speaking with you, and appreciate you taking the time to offer your insight to our blog readers.

4 tips for addressing health concerns with friends and family

TALK IT OUT: Tips for addressing health concerns with
friends and family

It can be difficult to speak with a friend or family member who is facing an issue that impacts their physical or emotional health, so when approaching them about it, it’s important to have an open conversation, not a confrontation. One of our new Health Programs faculty members and health professional, Kate Watson, often speaks about how to effectively communicate when dealing with difficult situations.

She has found that people often don’t like to be told what to do. So if you’re concerned about someone in your life who is struggling with a health issue -- such as smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol heavily, or eating poorly -- a confrontation might only build up more resistance from them.

What should you do instead? Try listening for what they need, rather than telling them what you think. For instance:

Avoid judging the person who is facing the issue. We all have behaviors that we would like to change, and we all struggle with improving our health.

Instead, listen to that person, and give them the support they need.

Avoid harshly confronting the person—it could make them defensive.

Instead, approach the situation gently. Open the conversation up and let them tell you how to move forward.

Avoid losing your patience. Behavior change takes time and people might not move as quickly as you’d like.

Instead, act as a support system. Encourage them when they need it, give them a shoulder to lean on, and be understanding.

Avoid giving unsolicited advice. Sometimes people just want to be heard, and your advice, while well-intentioned, might turn them off from the conversation.

Instead, ask for permission before giving advice. If the person agrees, then feel free to proceed.

Kate recently discussed this advice with medical students at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, focusing on effective communication strategies for addressing health concerns with patients. Her lecture was recorded for a DVD to be completed this spring.

We’re proud that Kate is now a member of our team. She has a strong background in healthcare that began in mental health services, where she worked as a clinician in substance abuse, domestic violence, and general counseling. Kate has seen patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings, including crisis stabilization units and community mental healthcare.

She received her degree in Psychology from Towson University, and earned her graduate degree in Psychological Counseling from Columbia University in New York. Kate is currently completing her doctorate in Health Policy and Social Justice at Drexel’s School of Public Health. In addition to her time at Peirce, Kate works as a therapist in the emergency department at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania on a consulting basis, and she owns her own wellness consulting company.

Welcome to the Peirce family, Kate! Thanks for sharing these tips, and we look forward to hearing more from you in classes and here on the blog in the coming months.

Financial aid help: How you can get the most out of your financial aid package

financial aid questions!

What are the differences between loans, grants, and scholarships? Do scholarships affect financial aid eligibility? What's the FASFA, and why is it important? Do I have to fill out the FASFA? We're filling in these blanks and more at our upcoming financial aid workshops.

Our Financial Aid Specialists will assist you in filing for financial aid, which might help you qualify for grants, scholarships, and student loans. They'll also be happy to guide you through other financial aid topics, and answer any questions you might have.

An academic advisor will be available during each session to help you plan your schedule, select which classes you should take, and register. These sessions are free for all Peirce students to attend, so we'd encourage you to come out and take advantage of this information.

Sessions will be held on-campus in Room 49 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the following dates:

GRAD SCHOOL: Join us on campus for a
graduate admissions seminar to help you
successfully navigate the application process

The graduate admissions process might seem overwhelming if you’re unsure of how it works, what’s expected of you, and what you’ll need to succeed. But it doesn’t have to be! We’re hosting a graduate admissions seminar to help answer your tough questions about the graduate school application process on Monday, March 18 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Room 51. I’ll cover topics such as:

Who should complete my recommendation forms?

What should I discuss in the application essay?

What will the interview be like?

How can a borderline GPA impact my chance of admission?

What makes a quality application?

How do I put my best foot forward in the interview?

How do I succeed in the overall application process?

I’ll be presenting on these topics, and then answering any and all questions from the audience. If the question you have isn't listed here, feel free to bring it and ask! It’ll not only help you, but will also benefit your peers who might be wondering the same thing.
Our goal is to help you feel more comfortable with the admissions process, and help you get the ball rolling. So whether you’re thinking about applying, have started your application, or have applied, we want you to feel confident and prepared to move forward with your Peirce Graduate Studies application.

If you aren't able to come next Monday, you can still get information about our master’s degree program. We’ll be holding sessions over the next few months that will cover other aspects related to graduate education, including financial aid and what to expect from the program’s classes. We’ll also be updating our blog with graduate education information, and you can always email us at Masters@Peirce.com with any questions.

We look forward to seeing you on Monday, armed with your graduate admission questions and ready to learn!

Peirce business students, turn your writing around at this 1-day conference!
