Lillooet River "Upper"

The Lillooet River "upper" flows through the Pemberton Meadows and into Lillooet Lake. The River is high and very cloudy this time of year with all of the Glacial till caused from Spring run off. Although the Lillooet River is high and cloudy it still holds Fish. Your best chance of catching these fish is by fishing where the clear tributaries enter the Lillooet. Examples of these Clear tributaries are as follows; One Mile Creek "Pemberton Creek", Green River and Miller Creek. Fish come to these clear Tributaries to flush their gills of all the glacial till and silt. Being that the Lillooet River is Cloudy, the use of bright colored lures and flies are recommended. Bait fishing is allowed and can be very effective.

Duffey Lake, BC, Canada

Duffey Lake is North of Pemberton, BC on Highway 99. The lake is now clear of ice and the fishing has been very good for Rainbow trout up to 2.5 lbs. Duffey lake is a very scenic lake and the shore fishing can be very good where the tributaries enter the lake. Access to the lake is also good because highway 99 follows along the entire South side of the lake. At the East end of the lake there is a small dirt boat launch suitable for smaller boats and 4x4 is recommended. There are no campsites on the lake, but if you drive North on 99 approximately 10-15 minutes you will arrive at Rogers Creek Rec Site. This campsite is very clean, has 10 sites and outhouses.
While fishing at Duffey lake try using small spoons "red and silver", small spinners, hot shots or small kwikfish in frog and skunk patterns. On the fly I have had best luck using full backs, half backs, B/H black spratley, B/H green spratley, hares ears nymphs and various colors of wooly buggers. This is a fun lake to fish because there are plenty of willing customers.

Birkenhead River is very high and swift, wading the river this time of year is not recommended. If you are planning on shore fishing you are going to spend a fair mount of time finding holding waters, but when you do there will be fish. Chinook Salmon are now starting to enter the river, always check the fishing regulations for closures and gear restrictions. Small spinners and Muddler patterns are working well. I have been receiving reports of very large Rainbow Trout being caught on the Fly with the following Pattern.

Lillooet Lake Fishing Report

Chinook Salmon are now entering Lillooet lake in numbers. There has been quite a few large Rainbows and Bull trout being caught where tributaries enter the lake and the Coastal Cutthroat run is coming to an end. Water levels are fairly high and there is a lot of floating wood in the lake, so use caution when boating. All of the campsites along the lake are open and in great shape and only one campground "Twin One" has a boat launch, which is dirt and 4x4 is highly recommended. Birkenhead Lake

The gate in to Birkenhead lake Provincial Park is now open. It was opened around 9am this morning and the campsite will remain closed until the May long weekend. The overflow campground is open to the public if you are wanting to camp at Birkenhead Lake. The campground and park are free of snow. The fishing has been very good for Large Bull Trout and Rainbow Trout averaging 1.5lbs.

Gates Lake is Free of Ice and has been fishing very well. Gates lake is located 20 minutes North of Pemberton, BC along Portage road. The fish are deeper than usual this year, so use a very fast sinking line or add weight to your line. Most of the Rainbows are hovering around 16'-23' and once down there, I was hooking them with ease. While fishing on the fly try using large Bead Headed Wooly Buggers, Muddler Patterns and Articulated Leech Patterns. While using gear, try using small Spoons and Shads.

Fishing Anderson Lake, British Columbia

The Creeks that feed the lake are starting to show more volume and color. Salmon Fry have been leaving Gates creek now for about 2 weeks, peaking a couple days ago. The fishing for Rainbows has been good using small Shads and Minnow Patterns on the surface, near the shore. Bull Trout fishing has been best at the North end of the lake using large Spoons and Lyman Plugs. The North end of the lake has been approximately 4°c - 5°c warmer than the South end of the Lake.

Blackwater Lake, North of Pemberton

Blackwater Lake is now free of Ice and has been for about a week. Fishing has been great for Rainbow Trout ranging from 16"-24". Fish near the weed beds and structure with CDC Emergers, Full Backs, Half Backs, Pheasant Tails, Blood Worms, Hare's Ear and Various Bead Headed Wooly Buggers. The Campsite is clear of snow and the "old" dock is in desperate need of some work.

Smoker Brine Recipe for Salmon and Trout

Soak the fillets overnight in a solution of:
1 can of pineapple or fresh pineapple or pineapple juice
Lemon juice - 2 lemons worth
1 tablespoon sea salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 stick of Cinnamon
1 teaspoon whole cloves
2 teaspoons chili flakes
1 cup maple syrup
1/2 cup dark brown sugar
2 or more cloves garlic
Mix ingredients in a blender
Don't rinse before smoking. Let dry on racks until pellicle forms (about an hour). Brush maple syrup on fillets a few times while smoking. Only 2 or 3 pans of wood chips.

This Brine is great for Smoked Salmon and Smoked Trout.

All of the low laying lakes are now free of ice and the Fishing has been very good in Pemberton, BC. There are a number of small lakes suitable for canoes, float tubes and pontoon boats. Examples of these smaller lakes would be; Ivey lake, Mosquito Lake, Echo lake, Blackwater lake and Gates lake. Pemberton has a number of larger lakes suitable for larger boats with engines. Examples of these larger lakes are; Duffey lake, Lillooet lake, Anderson lake and Birkenhead lake. Anderson lake and Lillooet lake do not freeze over in the Winter months, so they provide great fishing year round. There are a number of beautiful glacial fed Streams and Rivers in Pemberton that are very good for Spin and Fly Fishing. These streams and Rivers are; the Birkenhead River, Upper Lillooet river, Lower Lillooet river, Green river and the Ryan river. All of the streams in Pemberton get great Salmon runs in the Summer and Fall months, making for some incredible fishing. Pemberton also has remote alpine lake fishing, these lakes do not receive much fishing pressure so the fish are always eager to bite your hook. Examples of these alpine lakes are; Tenquille lake, Owl lake, Fowl Lake, Ogre lake, Joffre lake, Cerulean lake, Lizzie lake, Tao lake and Salamander lake.

Mosquito Lake is ICE FREE. The fly fishing has been very good for Rainbow Trout. The Rainbows have all been between 14"-20". For best luck try using a black egg sucking leeches and Blood worms.

Ivey Lake Pemberton, BC - Fishing Report

Ice is off of Ivey Lake in Pemberton, BC. Fishing has been slow and should pick up with some warm weather.
The picture below was taken April 04/2012 at the public access. The public access is at the shady end of the lake and most of this ice is gone, while the rest of the lake is Ice free. Tight Lines!
