Spring is in the air, as the year of Ox falls on 26th January 2009, Most shopping malls are gearing-up for the up coming festival. King of Tennis Tournament

Above is the venue for the "King of Tennis" Tournament to be held in Penang from 14-16 November 2008. Above structure with for over 5,000 fans was located at the Esplanade. Among the big names are former top players like Mats Wilander, Bjorn Borg, Stefan Edberg and Ilie Nastase representing Europe.

Players representing United States are Pete Sampras, John McEnroe, Marcelo Rios and Roy Emerson. Tickets are priced between RM200 to RM1200.

Khoo Kongsi

The Khoo Kongsi (邱公司) is a large Chinese clanhouse with elaborate and highly ornamented architecture, a mark of the dominant presence of the Chinese in Penang. The famous Khoo Kongsi is the grandest clan temple in the country. It is also one of the city's major historic attraction. The clan temple has retained its authentic historic setting, which includes an association building, a traditional theatre and the late 19th century rowhouses for clan members, all clustered around a granite-paved square. It is located in Cannon Square in the heart of the oldest part of the city of George Town, in the midst of narrow, winding lanes and quaint-looking pre-War houses exuding a palpable old world charm.

The Khoo Kongsi is a clan association of the Leong San Tong (Dragon Mountain Hall) clan, whose forefathers came from Sin Kang clan village in Hokkien province. The Khoos were among the wealthy Straits Chinese traders of 17th century Malacca and early Penang. In the 19th century, the clan complex resembled a miniature clan village, with its own self-government as well as educational, financial, welfare and social organisations. The clan temple was built in 1906 when the Khoo clan was at the height of wealth and eminence in Penang society.

The forefathers of the Khoo family who emigrated from South China built it as a clanhouse for members of the Khoo family in 1851. It was burnt down in 1894, allegedly struck by lightning, and the Chinese believed that it was due to its resemblance to the Emperor's palace, which provoked the gods. A scaled-down version was later built in 1902 and completed in 1906. Even so, the complex boasts a magnificent hall embellished with intricate carvings and richly ornamented beams of the finest wood bearing the mark of master craftsmen from China. The clan temple is dedicated to the clan's patron deities and also houses a collection of ancestral tablets. Chinese operas are still staged at the theatre during the seventh lunar month. They are a wonderful cultural experience worth witnessing.

Like many such clan associations in South East Asia, Khoo Kongsi is no longer the center of important social activities and functions that it once held. Different strategies and ideas are being implemented to redefine the place of clan associations in the 21st century.

Oh Chien - Oyster Omelette

Oyster Omelette or known as Oh Chien to the locals, its an omelette loaded with lots of oil, eggs, chopped chai por (preserved radish) and not to forget the main ingredient , the oyster. This dish will not be complete without the chili sauce.

BAK CHANG 粽子 or Glutinous rice dumpling with a variety of pork filings wrapped in lotus leaf. Though available throughout of the year. Traditionally eaten during the Dragon Boat Festival (Mandarin: Duanwu) which falls on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese calendar (approximately early- to mid-June), commemorating the death of Qu Yuan, a famous Chinese poet from the kingdom of Chu who lived during the Warring States period. Known for his patriotism, Qu Yuan tried unsuccessfully to warn his king and countrymen against the expansionism of their Qin neighbors. When the Qin Dynasty general Bai Qi took Yingdu, the Chu capital, in 278 BC, Qu Yuan's grief was so intense that he drowned himself in the Miluo river after penning the Lament for Ying. According to legend, packets of rice were thrown into the river to prevent fish from eating the poet's body. Another version states that zongzi were given to placate a dragon that lived in the river.

LAM MEE also known as the 'birthday noodle' as its often served during birthday in Peranakan household. The Chinese community regards noodles as a symbol of longevity and to serve noodle to a birthday celebrant is to wish the person long life. When it is prepared to celebrate birthday, a drop of red coloring a symbol of auspicious tidings is added to the egg to make a pink-colored omelette and served together with sambal.

Chinese in origin, this noodles usually garnished with roast pork and 'wan tan' or pork dumplings. Served in clear soup or tossed in dark soy sauce together with cut green chilies.

National Flower of Malaysia

Hibiscus rosa-sinensis or Bunga Raya is the national flower of Malaysia. Hibiscus, or rosemallow, is a large genus of about 200–220 species of flowering plants in the family Malvaceae (the mallow family, along with members like cocoa, cotton, okra, baobab and durian) native to warm temperate, subtropical and tropical regions throughout the world. The genus includes both annual and perennial herbaceous plants, and woody shrubs and small trees.

Hibiscus is also a primary ingredient in many herbal teas, its roots can be use to treat fever and its leaves are normally used as hair dye. That is why this humble flower has won many hearts of Malaysian an became the national symbol of Malaysia. The plants can be easily grown and be found throughout Malaysia. Penang Habour Lighthouse

Located at the north-eastern tip of Fort Cornwallis, this lighthouse was built in 1883 and it has a unique shape of a ship's mast was an important navigational aid for ships calling at Penang habour.

Fort Cornwallis

Fort Cornwallis is said to be the site where Captain Francis Light first landed in Penang in 1786. It was named after Lord Charles Marquis Cornwallis, the Governor General of Bengal, is located at the tip of the cape in George Town. Originally a wooden stockade, it was rebuilt in 1804 by convict labour. The brick fortification was raised to overlook the North Channel and the walls were fitted with cannons.

Today, this relic consist of an open-air amphitheater and souvenir shops. A statue of Sir Francis Light which was unveiled in 1939 to commemorate the 150-year anniversary of the establishment of the British settlement in Penang, stands here at the Fort. The first chapel built in Penang is located at the south-western corner of the fort.

Rare Fruits

A very rare kind of fruits I found recently along Jelutong area in Penang when I sent my car for servicing. The fruits resemble apples just that its smaller and grew on the brunches like coffee beans. Find it very interesting, I've check with the car mechanic its seems like the name of the plants is unknown to him but one thing for sure the fruits are non-edible.

Penang Ferry

The Penang Ferry has a long history and is very much a symbol and important mode of transport of Penang. Before the Penang Bridge was opened in 1988, the ferry was the main link to the island. These ferries can carry both passengers and vehicle and the journey takes 20 minutes.

Penang State Mosque

This mosque of elegant, contemporary architecture stands as a distinct landmark on the island. The mosque can accommodate about 5,000 worshipers and its usually crowded on Fridays.

Note: For Non-Muslim visitor, permission must be obtained from mosque officials to enter.

Trishaws can be easily located in the heart of George Town, they're available to take you from your hotel to any nearby tourist spot. Trishaws are convenient for short distance travel around the city centre. There are no standard fare, so be sure to negotiate and agree on the fare before taking a ride.

One of Malaysia's best exports to the world and one of the most recognised dish from the region. Generally consist of turmeric marinated meat (usually chicken or beef) chunks on bamboo skewer and grilled over charcoal. It is served with spicy peanut sauce with onion, cucumbers and ketupat (woven palm rice dumpling).

Penang Town Hall

The Town Hall stands west of the Padang or Esplanade. Frederick Weld, the Governor of the Straits Settlements, record his impressions of it in 1880: “I landed in Penang for a ball and supper, which took place at the Town Hall which I had formally opened a few days before, and which is not only a fine building in itself, but which was, on this occasion, decorated with extreme taste”. The Town Hall was occupied by the municipal offices until the latter moved to City Hall in 1903.

The building is the more ornate of the two facing the Padang. Its longer frontage is centred by a single-storey porte cochere flanked by twoarticulated side bays and more elaborate pediments- not strictly in the neoclassical style. On both floors, freestanding, off-the-façade column employ Ionic Orders. The building is richly ornate and baroque.

Ban Chean Kuih or "Slow-cooked Pancake" - Penang hawkers have recently become creative with the fillings for this pancake, substituting the traditional peanut and creamed corn with everything from peanut butter to ham. Crispy on the outside, soft and sweet on the inside, this folded pancake is a popular all-day snack.

The former Malayan Railway Building on the corner of Gat Lebuh

China

is a landmark with its prominent domed clock tower. Its corner site allows for three finely articulated elevations. The long site has two bays, with half-round pediments at the roofline breaking the monotony. Gaint Ionic columns frame the windows of the two upper floors. The ground floor arcade is treated with mock rustication grooves.

The freestanding, three-storey building at the junction of Gat Lebuh Chulia and Lebuh Pantai has functionally large doors that open onto Lebuh Pantai, A low, domed tower for drying out long fire hoses stands at the corner.

State Assembly Buildings (Dewan Undangan Negeri)

The building are typical of early 19th century architecture and stand dignified like a row of three Grek temples along Lebuh Light, south of Fort Cornwallis. Their porticoes are linked by colonnaded blocks, all in Tuscan Order, giving the group an appropriately stately character.

Penang Surpreme Court

The grant colonial-style building, erected in 1905, stands at the junction of Lebuh Light and Jalan Mesjid Kapitan Keling. It is symmetrically planned in the form of a cros. The high, central spacious hall at the crossing is marked by four corner cupolas. Colounaded verandahs, now filled in with glass and timber louvers, surround the entire building.

State Museum & Art Gallery, Penang

The museum, located on Lebuh Farguhar, has only the remaining western half of an otherwise symmetrically planned building of the former Penang Free School. Its east wing was a casualty of World War II bombs. Its façade is similar to that of the City Hall: late neoclassical style; an arched porte cochere that carries pronounced keystones; and even a look-alike roof turret.
