Tomb of Dracula v2 #3, 1980 - Like many of Marvel's bronze age magazine covers, this one appeals blatantly to an older male audience. The same artistic team on the Tomb of Dracula comic, Gene Colan and Tom Palmer, contribute two excellently drawn stories in this issue. A text article on Lilith, daughter of Dracula, showcases some informative figure studies by Frank Miller (see interior page below). These loose sketches not only reveal some of his thought processes, but are visually appealing in their own right. Other artists in this bronze age magazine include Jerry Bingham. Johnny Mack Brown v1 / Four Color v2 #922, 1958 - Both feature stories in this issue are competently illustrated, the first drawn by a young Dan Spiegle, possibly influenced by Alex Toth. Russ Manning does the second tale in his own consistently unique style. The artist's many little touches and additions in each panel give the frontier settings a more genuine appearance. The scenes involving a stagecoach are especially noteworthy in their fine details. Note that in the final panel, Manning cleverly uses the shade of a tree to convey the "shadiness" of the captured robbers. Photo cover.

Monster Times v1 #1, 1972 - To start off this series, Bernie Wrightson makes two excellent contributions to this first issue. A two-page retelling of the original Nosferatu is superbly drawn, despite the small size of the panels. His mastery of light and dark compensates for the lack of color. Even better is Wrightson's full page Frankenstein illustration. He combines a large portrait with two other scenes from the movie, seamlessly integrating them. It is exceptionally drawn and detailed, predating the artist's own Frankenstein book by over a decade. Other artists in this issue include Carlos Garzon. Cover by Gray Morrow.

Brainiac 5 passes on the event to help an old friend at the Time Institute. This thick Milestone issue, written by Paul Levitz and drawn by Keith Giffen and Larry Mahlstedt, also employs past contributors to the series including Dave Cockrum, Curt Swan, Kurt Schaffenberger and others. On the cover, each Legionnaire is drawn by a different artist. Joe Kubert's Dawnstar and Walt Simonson's Blok don't really stand out aesthetically, but neither does anyone else.

Among them is Lo-Zar (a jungle lord precursor to the silver age Ka-Zar) and Jungle Boy (a do-gooder with an entourage of monkeys). The most interesting is Leopard Girl, who fights evil in a full-body leopard-print leotard. In addition to her athletic skills, she commands six leopards to do her bidding. Her introductory story is written by Don Rico and drawn by Al Hartley. Other artists in this issue include Joe Maneely and John Forte. Cover by Maneely.
