Abstract:

In recent years, airborne microplastics have been identified in a range of remote environments. However, data throughout the Southern Hemisphere, in particular Antarctica, are largely absent to date. We collected snow samples from 19 sites across the Ross Island region of Antarctica. Suspected microplastic particles were isolated and their composition confirmed using micro-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (µFTIR). We identified microplastics in all Antarctic snow samples at an average concentration of 29 particles L−1, with fibres the most common morphotype and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) the most common polymer. To investigate sources, backward air mass trajectories were run from the time of sampling. These indicate potential long-range transportation of up to 6000 km, assuming a residence time of 6.5 d. Local sources were also identified as potential inputs into the environment as the polymers identified were consistent with those used in clothing and equipment from nearby research stations. This study adds to the growing body of literature regarding microplastics as a ubiquitous airborne pollutant and establishes their presence in Antarctica.

"Drawing directly upon work by the European ATLAS project (2016-20) this Research Topic will explore recent findings and themes emerging as both the marine scientific and management communities embrace assessments of marine ecosystem connectivity, biogeography and function at ocean basin scale. Research and policy development at basin scale has been driven by the realisation that climatic change and anthropogenic impacts are rapidly altering marine ecosystems at the same time as governments seek to promote increased economic output from the marine environment. This broad context sets the considerable challenge and opportunity for marine science, industry, management and policy to shape the frameworks through which this sustainable economic ‘Blue Growth’ can be achieved.

This Research Topic will bring together key advances and approaches relevant to ocean basin-scale research and management. Studies built upon new discoveries from poorly-understood deep ocean ecosystems (e.g. coral, sponge, vent & chemosynthetic fauna) are now highlighting the opportunities for the scientific community to create a new evidence base for long-term management. For example, advances in oceanographic data availability, modelling resolution and a better understanding of larval biology and dispersal are fostering more interdisciplinary partnerships between physicists and biologists to model......cont."

Experts 'rediscover' largest 'sea dragon' fossil in museum archive

According to a press release on the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) website, after closer examination of the fossil, scientists learned that the beast was pregnant. This makes it the third-known example on record of an Ichthyosaurus with an embryo.

The AAAS added that the beast was the largest on record, measuring between 3 and 3.5 meters in length and it was discovered on the Somerset Coast. It was part of the collections of the Lower Saxony State Museum in Hannover, Germany and remained unstudied until earlier this year. In 2016, Sven Sachs, a paleontologist at Germany’s Bielefeld Natural History Museum spotted the specimen on a routine visit and collaborated with Dean Lomax, a University of Manchester palaeontologist and ichthyosaur expert, to examine the specimen.

The embryo was incomplete and still developing, according to the AAAS. It also contained a portion of its backbone, a forefin, ribs and a few other bones. The vertebrae measured 7 cm. Also surprising is the specimen’s tail, which was found not to belong to the remains of the skeleton, but from a separate Ichthyosaurus and added to make the skeleton appear more intact.

Sachs told the AAAS: "It was not 'put together' to represent a fake, but simply for a better display specimen. But, if 'fake' portions remain undetected then scientists can fall foul to this, which results in false information presented in the published record.”

The species is one of the most common fossil reptiles in the UK, according to the AAAS. Thousands of its specimens are known and range from isolated bones to complete skeletons.

The team estimated that the female specimen hails from the early Jurassic period and is roughly 200 million years old.

The new study was published Monday in the journal, Acta Palaeontologica Polonica."
