The 2017 Penn’s Way Campaign officially drew to a close last month. Thank you to everyone who donated or participated in the campaign this year. Every year, we continue to set bold goals and reach an even broader population in Philadelphia, the Mid-Atlantic Region, and around the world. And this year was another truly remarkable team endeavor: UPHS and our University of Pennsylvania partners raised more than $1.7 million, exceeding our $1.55 million goal!

Pennsylvania Hospital achieved 85 percent participation and raised $102,786 for the Penn’s Way Campaign, $15,958 of which was designated to Pennsylvania Hospital specifically.

Thank you to all of you who contributed to the campaign. Your generosity will have a major impact on the many charities and communities we serve.

She vividly remembers one, a young man who had been shot eight times but, miraculously, recovered. “Before he was discharged, he told me that he’d get his life together this time. He said ‘I don’t want this to happen again.’” Months later, he returned to the ER, but this time no one could save his life. “I knew then that I wanted to help – give these kids a way to escape the violence in Camden,” she said. “I had to do something.”

Growing up in Philadelphia, she recalled enjoying free lunches and free recreation activities during the summer. “They don’t have that in Camden. Kids have nothing to do. A lot are in the houses by themselves.” That’s when she came up with Setfree Urban Outreach, a fun and safe way for underprivileged children in Camden to spend Saturdays during the summer. “I simple wrote down what I wanted to do and then I made it happen!” she said. She created and distributed flyers in several Camden neighborhoods but didn’t think many kids would show. That first summer 250 kids and parents came.

For several years, Carter and her team of volunteers (which included coworkers, friends, neighbors, spouses… even her mom!) set up several tents for games and storytelling, a dance contest with prizes, free pretzels and water ice, health screenings, and gently used clothing and shoes. “My volunteers were my motivation,” she said.

This past summer, though, funding for these weekly activities, which primarily came from Carter and other volunteers, ran out so she was unable to hold the program. But, thanks to a Penn Medicine CAREs grant – and the help of many of her coworkers at Penn Medicine Cherry Hill - many kids from Camden still enjoyed an outreach they won’t soon forget. At the end of August, nearly 60 got to bowl for two hours and eat all the pizza, soft pretzels, and soft drinks they wanted! “We also gave out backpacks filled with school supplies,” she said. “The kids had a great time and the parents who came were thrilled.”

Carter hopes to start Setfree Urban Outreach up again next summer. “I’m looking for sponsors to build a relationship with so that we may continue to service the children in the inner city and give them options other than just the street corner,” she said. “I work very hard to make sure my own children succeed; it's embedded in me to want every child I come across to have the same outcome: success.”

Arya, MD, of OB/GYN, who helped organize the visit. During a workshop held in the unit conference room, the students participated in hands-on activities (including suturing and hand washing) and spoke with nurses, residents, fellows and medical students about working in health care. In addition, Sakinah Wade, RNC MNN, BSN, of Women’s Health, made a presentation on multiculturalism.

Though students did not visit clinical areas because of infection control policies, “the principal of Quba Institute thought that the visit would have a deep and lasting impact on her students,” Arya said. “The enthusiasm of the young doctors and nursing staff who participated and their genuine pleasure in 'giving back' to the community was impressive!”

The visit also included a stop at Penn’s Biomedical Library where students learned how 3D printing is used in medical research and saw a specially designed tray to hold tiny zebrafish and models of a femur showing the spongy tissue.

This year, our team captains led the charge for PAH to exceed its goals by raising more than $30,000 and registering 340 walkers. The 2016 Heart Walk boasts the highest PAH fundraising and walker participation to date.

As a health system, Penn Medicine raised more than $261,000, surpassing this year’s system-wide goal and breaking the record for the highest amount fundraised by a health system for the Philadelphia Heart Walk.

The top individual fundraiser was our very own Chief Executive Officer, Theresa Larivee, who also served as Penn Medicine's Executive Champion for the 2016 Heart Walk.

“It was amazing to hear Theresa’s name and Penn Medicine announced as the top fundraisers,” said Danielle Heffner, director of Program Development and Service Line Integration for PAH Heart and Vascular Services. “This was a true team effort to help eradicate heart disease and stroke.”

According to the American Heart Association (AHA), heart disease is the leading cause of death around the world. Every day, more than 2,200 Americans die from heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases — that’s one person every 40 seconds. The Philadelphia Heart Walk is part of a collaborative, nationwide event to raise awareness and funds to support AHA's mission of building healthier lives free of cardiovascular disease and stroke.

“Congratulations, and more importantly, thank you, to everyone who helped make this year’s walk our most successful Heart Walk to date,” Larivee said. “The enthusiasm and leadership during this campaign was truly astounding.”

We had very generous participation by everyone at PPMC this year. We contributed $80,289, which is 122% of our goal. Great job by everyone!

We had a participation rate of 62 percent – which is our best ever – and very close to our goal of 65 percent. This is a wonderful reflection on the commitment of PPMC staff members to support our communities. Again, thank you and great job!

All monies that are donated specifically to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center – listed under Penn Medicine – will be directed to the Pharmacy Assistance Program, supporting medications upon discharge to our neediest patients.

The 3.1-mile race took runners through Penn Park while others – including many four-legged friends -- enjoyed a one-mile walk through the University campus.

Each year, the event brings together hundreds of people for one universal cause: to support Alzheimer’s and aging-related research at Penn’s Institute on Aging (IOA).

“I think most of us in attendance have been touched through family members by neurodegenerative disease,” said PJ Brennan, MD, the Health System’s CMO and senior VP, at this year’s 5K. “It is exhilarating to get out and do something about it!”

This year, the event raised nearly $35,000 for the cause and had one of its largest turnouts yet.

“Your support will fund novel research at the IOA – work that would not otherwise be done except for your support,” said Brennan, who started the race in 2012. “I know our team of scientists and staff in the IOA are grateful to you.” So far, the 5K for the IOA has raised more than $170,000.
