It has web browsers such as Firefox and Google Chrome, as well as messaging software such as Skype and Pidgin, among other things. The list of available programs is quite extensive. All of these programs are readily available by going to the original programs' main website, but this site avoids unnecessary web surfing. Here is a tip for everyone that likes to keep their cell phones on vibrate, courtesy of LifeHacker.com:

"Matt shows us how to keep your cell phone on vibrate without losing it:

I prefer to keep my cell phone on vibrate all the time. Its just easier for me. But it poses a problem because I tend to lose my phone a lot, so calling it to find it is pretty much pointless. What I've done is set all my default tones to no ring (calls, txts, etc), and turned vibrate on for all. Then I set a custom ringer on my skype number, so if I need to call it to find it I can, and it still makes a full noise, without annoying me the rest of the day"

Source: http://lifehacker.com/5383537/from-the-tips-box-finding-cellphones-copy-file-path-in-finder-and-more-wave-filters/gallery/
Deuces,

J

Upcoming Technology: "The Sixth Sense"

Straight from the MIT's Pattie Maes Lab comes the "Sixth Sense", the newest in motion based technology. Users wear a camera and projector as well as pointers in order to capture movement. The camera responds to common gestures such as forming a your hands as a camera to take picutres. The camera also reponds to various objects placed in front of it to give more information about it, e.g. books, plane tickets, and even people. In the advent of long nights at the computer, let's save our eyes and time.

Courtesy of lifehacker.com comes F.lux an application that controls the brightness and tint of your monitor corresponding with the time of day. That way when the sun sets, the screen darkens slightly to match it. We don't have 18 hours of sunlight, so don't give your eyes that much.

Also from lifehacker.com comes E.gg Timer. It is a web application whereby you can set a countdown for whatever time you like. It is perfect for timing breaks or budgeting how much time you want to spend on an assignment.

The source websites:
F.lux
E.gg Timer

Happy studying, all.

Back to school tip

Welcome back to campus, all. Here is a tip to start the new semester well:

Add your schedule and office hours for classes now to a calendar before it gets too busy. That way you always know when and where to contact your professors and TAs. My current favorite is Google Calendar, but any work fine. Use a paper calendar if you are so inclined.

Register for the National Conference!

I am sure that most of you have registered for this year's National Convention in Las Vegas, but if you have not the early-bird registration fee is still in effect until Friday, January 16.
