Lake Erie’s tributary streams were painfully low until Thursday morning, when rains had them flowing high and muddy. Conditions are expected to be near perfect by the weekend said Matt Hrycyk of Poor Ricjard’s Bait and Tackle in Erie. Anglers were getting steelhead early this week, he added, on single eggs, minnows and small flies — and on Powerbait near the creek mouths……..

The weather, as it has for the past few weeks, continues to confound the fishing locally.  • Thanks to all of the high water, no one has been fishing the Beaver River this week, according to Bob Bernhardy of Shooter’s Place in Bridgewater.  • Lack of safe ice has also stalled the fishing at Brady’s Run Lake.  • The fishing has been up and down at Lake Erie. The steelhead streams are all but frozen over again, as is Presque Isle Bay, but the ice there is not necessarily thick enough to support fishing.

The Lake Erie tributaries are absolutely loaded with steelhead in Pennsylvania, Ohio and New York. Some of the creeks are locked in ice, but there is some fishing going on. Most creeks to the west of Erie are covered by ice in the better fishing areas. Upper Elk Creek does have a fair amount of open water, though. Some anglers are drilling holes at Walnut Creek Access, but there have been no reports of success yet. On the east side, the only reliable open water is at Sixteen Mile Creek. Finally there is some ice fishing at Presque Isle Bay, although thickness is still marginal.
