Inaugural Pacer Assessment Trials Raises The Bar For KLSCM 2020 Pacer Team

Have you ever used the services of a Pacer in a distance running event? Was it because you wanted to finish at a certain time or because you needed the encouragement, motivation and advice that an experienced Pacer could provide? Those are usually the main reasons why runners decide to follow a Pacer during an event but collectively, the Pacing team of a particular event play a significant role in getting as many runners as possible to achieve their finishing time goals. Pacers also perform an unofficial role as ambassadors and advocates of the event.

The Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon (KLSCM) began its Pacer programme in 2010 with the intention of raising the quality of the event, and it has grown to become a crucial ingredient of KLSCM ever since. Becoming a Pacer for the premier distance running event in Malaysia is a serious responsibility so this year, Dirigo Events, the owner and organizer of KLSCM, decided to invite and conduct open trials for all those harbouring aspirations to be a Pacer.

Out of an initial 247 applications, 116 runners were shortlisted for the Trials which took place over two consecutive Sundays. Both sessions were held over a 1km loop at the LHDN offices in Jalan Duta.

The candidates were required to run consistently timed loops without the aid of watches or any electronic devices. The intention was to get the candidates to run by “feel” as consistently as they could, with the Half Marathon hopefuls doing 10 loops while those trying for the Full Marathon had to complete 18 loops.

“For the 12 th edition of KLSCM, we felt we needed to freshen up our Pacer Team with some new blood and so we decided to conduct the Open Trials,” said Rainer Biemans, Project Director of KLSCM and Director of Dirigo Events. “The response was great and we had some really good performances over the two Sundays, which gives us a bit of a headache to select the best participants. But that was a nice problem to have,” added Biemans.

Biemans and the Dirigo Team have now analysed all the results and have come to the difficult decision of selecting 30 Pacers for KLSCM 2020. BHPetrol Orange Run Returns For Its 14th Year

Petaling Jaya, Nov 3, 2019 - The BHPetrol Orange Run is back to mark its 14th consecutive years! The annual run organized by BHPetrol in collaboration with Polis Diraja Malaysia, Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya and Affin Bank encourgaes Malaysians to lead healthier LIfestyles contributing to those in neeed.

Encik Azizul Azily Ahmad, Acting CEO of BHPetrol said, "We are delighted to be holding our 14th edition of the Orange Run. Over the years, we have been successful in encouraging people to work up a sweat for a healthier mind and body while providing a platform for them to give back to the less privileged. In line with BHPetrol committment to giving baak to the communicty, Y.Bhg. Lt. Jen Dato' Pahlawan Hj Khairuddin bin Hj Mat Yusof (B), Chairman of BHPetrol presented a total of RM30,000 to three charitable homes, Terak Nur Barakah, House of Love and Rumah Shalom, with a contribution of RM10,000 each.

Flagged off at the Curve, Mutiara Damansara, the 11km Orange Run this year attracted a total of about 5000 runners made up of new and seasoned participants. Thr run saw contestants participating under eight categories, namely Men Open and veteran, Woman open and veteran, Boys and Girls and Men and Women International Open to encourage runners from all walks of life to take part. The winners took home a total of RM50,000 worth of cash prizes alogn with BHPetraol vouchers.

Familes and frends who cheered on the runners make the event all the more memorable, with everyone taking in the joyful spirit of the event. There were also other activities which took place that entertained the crowd, including product offers and sampling by F&F Beverages Marketing Sdn Bhd, Nestle, Chek Hup Coffee, Affin Bank and many more.

MULTIPLE-TIME TRIATHLON WORLD CHAMPION JAVIER GOMEZ SHATTERS COURSE RECORD TO CLINCH 2019 IRONMAN MALAYSIA TITLE

Tessa Kortekaas also creates history after winning women’s elite title in her first year as a professional

LANGKAWI (26 OCTOBER 2019): Javier Gomez cemented his status as the greatest triathlete in history after shattering the course record to clinch the 2019 IRONMAN Malaysia title in emphatic fashion.

The Spaniard with nine world titles crossed the finish line in a stunning 8:18:58, to eclipse the course record set by 2017 champion Romain Guillaume (8:32:54) in 2017.

Switzerland’s Philipp Koutny finished behind him in 8:24:18, while Brazil’s Thiago Vinhal took third place with an 8:31:15 finish.

A history-making day also witnessed Netherland’s Tessa Kortekaas winning the women’s elite category in 9:43:20 in her first year as a professional.

The 36-year-old Gomez was delighted to secure his first IRONMAN title under scorching conditions.

“It’s great, it’s my first IRONMAN win! It was a tough race, it was sunny all the time and the temperatures were high,” said Gomez.

“I had to give my best because Philipp (Koutny) did an amazing job on the bike. I had to catch him, and take some risks at the beginning of the run, but luckily I could keep up and take the win.”

Gomez was the marquee name in the 26-man professional field, and he lived up to his reputation with a powerful swim in the waters of Pantai Kok, to emerge the first man out in 47:17s.

Gomez put a 1 min 51 seconds gap between him and defending champion Daniil Sapunov after the completion of swim to bike, with Guillaume closing in.

But Koutny emerged a contender at the 30km mark along with Guillaume to trail Gomez by two minutes, as the race intensified into the rolling hills among the villages around Datai.

The 75km mark signalled the first turning point of the race when Koutny overtook Gomez for the lead.

The Swiss was already showing glimpses of his talent with a big bike performance in Hawaii two weeks ago, seeing him through a Top-10 Finish at the IRONMAN World Championship.

But Gomez upped the ante in the 42-km run, shaving off Koutny’s 5:30 advantage to just 25 seconds after 26 kilometres, and regained his lead through 33km to finish in sensational fashion.

“I set my pace, and I kept my nutrition by eating and drinking. It was difficult because I was struggling in the last six or seven km, but I’m happy to have crossed the finish line.”

The 2012 Olympics silver medallist plans to use this win to prepare for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.

“I raced well in the heat which is important to me. Now is time to take a break for the offseason. I will prepare for Tokyo after that.”

Gomez also earned an automatic slot to the 2020 IRONMAN World Championships in Kona, Hawaii next year.

Kortekaas, meanwhile, was coming to terms to digest a monumental victory in her first year as a professional female athlete.

“It’s not easy, not many professionals will reach this goal in the first year. I cannot believe it, I have no words,” said the former age-grouper world champion.

“I trained super hard for this. I had a great swim, bike was good, but the last 50 km was so hard and I was suffering. It’s going to take a long time before I believe this has happened.”

The 2019 IRONMAN Malaysia started off with an open water swim start from the picturesque white sandy beach of Pantai Kok with a two-loop triangle out and back course. The athletes followed with a two-loop bike course heads out of Pantai Kok on to a clockwise loop from towards the rolling hills of Datai and the fringes of Kuah Town.

Returning from the bike route, athletes made their changeover on to the run course through a unique indoor air-conditioned transition at the Mahsuri International Exhibition Center (next to the airport). The 2.5 lap run course fulfilled the promise of an amazing scenic run beside the Langkawi International Airport towards the finish line at the stunning Cenang beach.

40,000 Runners Turn Dataran Into Sea of Blue For KLSCM2019

Debutant Victor Kipchirchir from Kenya clinches maiden KLSCM title

KUALA LUMPUR, Sunday, 29 September 2019: Dataran Merdeka was awash in blue when 40,000 runners took part in the Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon (KLSCM) 2019 today. The 11^th edition of the premier distance running event in Malaysia also saw YB Syed Saddiq, Minister of Youth and Sports, make his debut in the event by participating in the Half Marathon category. Also present were YB Khalid Samad, Minister of Federal Territories and YB, Dr. Ong Kian Ming, Deputy Minister of Trade and Industries, who also took part in the Half Marathon.

Contributing to the record participation numbers was one of the largest Full Marathon fields seen in an event in Malaysia when more than 13,000 runners took part in the category. An equally impressive 12,500 runners ran in the Half Marathon, making two of the longer distance categories the most well represented, which is testimony to the growing popularity of distance running in the country.

Victor Kipchirchir, from Kenya, who was making his debut appearance at KLSCM won the Full Marathon Men’s Open category in a time of 2:19:41 to take home USD17,500 while the Full Marathon Women’s Open category was won by Gladys Jepkemoi Chemweno from Kenya in a time of 2:36:45 also earning USD17,500 in the process.

Kiprop Tonui from Kenya came in second in the Full Marathon Men’s Open with a time of 2:20:05 while Tallam James Cherutich, also from Kenya finished third in a time of 2:21:04. In the Full Marathon Women’s Open, defending champion Elizabeth Chepkanan Rumokol from Kenya had to settle for second place in a time of 2:41:48 while Ngigi Pauline from Kenya took third place with a time of 2:45:44.

The Full Marathon Malaysian Men’s category was a keenly contested affair as Muhaizar bin Mohamad and his compatriot in the Armed Forces Nik Fakaruddin bin Ismail went toe-to-toe for most of the race. KL SEA Games bronze medallist Muhaizar though broke away towards the end, managing to defend his title and in doing so won this category for an astonishing fifth consecutive time, finishing in 2:35:23. Nik Fakaruddin finished second in 2:40:31 while Fabian @ Osmond bin Daimon came in third in a time of 2:45:06. The Full Marathon Malaysian Women’s category saw Loh Chooi Fern defend her maiden win in KLSCM2018 in a time of 3:21:33 while Tho Siaw Khim clocked 3:29:42 to come in second and Yap Yee Ling got third place in a time of 3:30:50.

FM Open winner Kipchirchir was delighted with his maiden Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon win. “It was a tough race as I have never run in this type of heat before but my preparation was good,” Kipchirchir said. “I am happy to be able to win in my first race in Kuala Lumpur and I hope to come back next year,” he continued.

Muhaizar was also thrilled to have retained his title, especially after the intense competition with training partner Nik Fakaruddin. “I think running and winning in KLSCM before gave me a slight advantage over the other competitors as I know what to expect and so made the right strategy,” he said. “This win will help boost my confidence ahead of the SEA Games in Manila in November and I hope to be able to bring back a medal,” he added.

Rainer Biemans, Project Director of KLSCM and Director of Dirigo Events, said “The 11^th edition of KLSCM has proven to be an exciting two days that has seen some great competitions in our top categories, which has added to the lustre of our biggest event yet. It has also been and honour and a privilege having both YB Syed Saddiq and YB Dr. Ong Kian Ming participate in our Half Marathon, and my heartfelt thanks go out to them for supporting our event and I hope they enjoyed themselves out there today. We are also grateful for YB Khalid Samad’s presence and for giving out prizes”, he continued.

Syed Saddiq flagged off the Half Marathon category along with Abrar A. Anwar, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of title sponsor Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia before joining in the run.

“For someone who’s more a cyclist than a runner, that was pretty challenging! But crossing that finish line was extremely fulfilling and I’m really happy to have made it within the cut-off time. I can see now how participating in distance running events such as this can be tremendously rewarding so kudos to Dirigo Events, Standard Chartered Bank and to everyone else who had a hand in putting together this fantastic event,” said Syed Saddiq. “My congratulations as well to all the winners and to all who participated and achieved their running goals,” he continued.

Anwar. A. Abrar, MD and CEO of Standard Chartered Malaysia, who took part in yesterday’s Friendship Run as well, was delighted with the massive turnout over the two days and hoped the event would continue to attract the running masses for many more years to come.

“Being title sponsor for the last 11 years, Standard Chartered Malaysia is delighted that we’ve once again managed to successfully pull off this event with our biggest numbers to date.

From pioneering the concept of being the first running event to run through iconic landmarks in Kuala Lumpur, KLSCM has never stood still and has set the benchmark and gold standard for running events in Malaysia,” said Abrar.

While KLSCM is a competitive event, it has been built with a community focus at its core and that community element was brought to the fore this year when KLSCM’s Run For A Reason (RFAR) charity initiative raised its highest amount in terms of funds raised compared to previous years. RFAR is an integral component of KLSCM and this year, participating charities the National Cancer Society of Malaysia, Dignity for Children Foundation and Hospis Malaysia will benefit from over RM890,000 worth of funds raised by over 1,000 RFAR participants, together with the Corporate Challenge. “We are extremely happy to have raised a record amount under our RFAR charity banner and our sincere thanks go out to all involved who made this possible,” said Biemans.

The record numbers did not end there as the event also saw its largest number of running tourists as well when more than 1,900 from 49 countries arrived in Kuala Lumpur to take part in the iconic event. Add another 10,020 Malaysians who came from outside of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor to make it a particularly busy weekend for the city.

One particularly inspiring tourist was Chris Koch, a farmer, athlete, adventurer and motivational speaker who flew in from Canada to participate. Born without limbs, Chris has been travelling the world and participating in marathons to spread his “If I Can” message to as many people as possible in the hopes of motivating them to get the most out of their lives. Using a longboard to traverse the Full Marathon route, Chris took part in his eighth marathon on a third continent when he completed his marathon here. “I was prepared for the heat and humidity because I knew it would be way more than I’m used to, however, starting so early was different. On the course, other marathoners are usually so encouraging and supportive but here, they were even more so. That definitely has me wanting to come back for another,” Koch said.

KLSCM2019 began with the Kids Dash categories yesterday morning that saw another record when 1,000 children participated in the 1km and 3km categories. Both categories were expanded this year to encourage more children to participate and also saw speed categories introduced for both distances in a move to separate the competitive children from the fun runners.

For the first time, the 5km category was also held yesterday morning to allow for larger participation numbers today and incorporated the Friendship Run, meant to be a warm-up run for those taking part in the Full Marathon, as well as an opportunity for runners from around the world to meet and forge friendships.

Towards the end of the event, the KLSCM running community gathered at the Finish Line to cheer and provide moral support to the last runners to finish within the check-out time of 7:15 hours. These runners had given their all to finish the race and were given a rousing end replete with confetti blasts to coax them home within the required time.

The Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon has grown year-on-year to become the most anticipated distance running event in Malaysia, where for the first time this year public registrations had to be balloted. The premier running event once again saw Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia returning as title sponsor, along with a host of returning and new sponsors, including Seiko, Under Armour, 100 Plus, Jaybird, TudungPeople, Banana Boat and Pacific Regency. The event is owned and organised by Dirigo Events with venue host Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur.

KLSCM is sanctioned and supported by the Malaysia Athletics Federation (MAF), Federal Territory Kuala Lumpur Athletic Federation (FTKLAA), International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and Association of International Marathons, Distance Races (AIMS).

IRONMAN 70.3 Desaru Coast 2020

IRONMAN® is proud to present the inaugural IRONMAN 70.3 Desaru Coast. Hosted by Desaru Coast Malaysia, the Malaysia’s latest curated premium integrated destination in Johor.

The inaugural IRONMAN 70.3 Desaru Coast is part of the Desaru Coast Multisport Festival presented by IRONMAN from the 17th - 19th of April 2020. Events making up the Festival weekend include IRONKIDS Desaru Coast on Friday evening, 5i50 Desaru Coast & Desaru Coast Sprint on Saturday morning and IRONMAN 70.3 Desaru Coast on Sunday.

1.9km Swim

The race will start with a 1.9 kilometre swim on the beachfront of The Westin Desaru Coast Resort. Athletes will swim one lap in a clockwise direction under a rolling start process. The swim will be a non-wetsuit swim with the water temperature hovering around 28C - 29C.

90km Bike

The 2 loop, undulating bike course will head out towards Desaru Coast Riverside and then turn right at Jalan Kampung Punggol to cycle straight through the Penawar Roundabout. At the Tanjung Balau roundabout, athletes will turn left into Jalan Ladang Siang through a beautiful canopy of trees before u-turning to head back towards the roundabout and left towards Sedili Kecil. From the far turnaround point at the northern end of the bike course, athletes will head back to the Tanjung Balau roundabout which will signify the lap turnaround point to start their 2nd lap. The mostly flat 3 loop run course will circle around the perimeter of the The Els Club Desaru Coast - Ocean Course, offering some welcome shade in places. The lap turnaround point will be located outside the transition area at the beachfront of The Westin Desaru Coast Resort, where athletes will eventually finish their IRONMAN 70.3 journey.

PETALING JAYA, 23^rd July 2019 – The Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2019 (SCKLM 2019) announces the addition of high performance sportswear brand, Under Armour, as its official apparel sponsor for this year’s run. As the official apparel sponsor of the 11^th edition of the race, Under Armour will outfit 40,000 participants with their running shirts.

“We are excited to be a part of SCKLM 2019, one of the nation’s most-anticipated marathons. It will be one of the highlights of the year for us as we believe the partnership will allow us to reach out to more runners,” quotes Michael Binger, Chief Executive Officer of Triple Pte Ltd and UA Sports (SEA).

In addition to gearing up the participants, Under Armour will also outfit the 30-member Pacer team for the marathon with the newly designed UA HOVR performance running footwear and race kits to enable them to train better. 24 pacers will be assisting runners in the Full Marathon category under a variety of finishing times and another 6 pacers for the Half Marathon category.

A runner’s pace is often the all-important factor that will ensure a runner finishes according to his or her set time objectives. Pacers are usually very experienced runners who can run at a steady pace for other runners with similar time objectives to follow. As inexperience and fatigue set in for lesser experienced runners, it is the Pacers who will provide the right encouragement and motivation to get runners on track to finish the race within their set times.

“Experience is key for Pacers and we have been very fortunate to get a returning group of runners who regularly volunteer their expertise for every SCKLM,” said Rainer Biemans, Project Director of SCKLM and Director of Dirigo Events, the owner and organiser of the race.

“Some of our Pacers have been with us from day one and are quite well known to the local running community so their popularity and more importantly, their experience is a big advantage for us. We are very grateful for their selfless service over the years” he added.

Kartini Ahmad Kamal, 41, who hails from Sandakan and works as an Admin. and Accounts Manager, decided to become a Pacer to give back to the running community and is grateful for the opportunity to be part of the Pacer team for SCKLM2019 for the third year running.

“Being a pacer is not an easy task and I trained harder for my pacer job compared to when I race. I have learnt so many things since my first pacer duty in 2015. The best part of being a pacer is seeing runners get to the finish line in a time they did not previously believe was possible. We may have played a small part in that and for us, that's a real honour and privilege,” said Kartini.

Chan Wai Yee on the other hand will be making her debut as a Full Marathon Pacer after trying her hand at the Half Marathon distance previously. The KL resident works in retail marketing and like Kartini, is eager to do her bit for the running community.

“I enjoy being a pacer as I feel sometimes, we are too absorbed in our own personal improvement that we forget to support other runners, especially new runners. I also want to encourage the slower runners who are often forgotten or disregarded. I do it for the love of running and hope to pass this spirit on to other runners as well,” said Wai Yee.

This year’s run will see a record breaking high of 40,000 participants who will converge at Dataran Merdeka on the 28^th and 29^th of September 2019.

Electrolux Home Run 2019 - Race Review

Electrolux Home Run 2019 was held in conjunction with the 100th year of Electrolux's celebration as one of the premium electrical home appliances manufacturer. It had been quite some time since I joined any races and I really look forward for this race.

The 10k route was mostly flat with plenty of water stations. There were a lot of foods and drinks to grab even until the end of the event. The main highlight was the ultimate lucky draw prize worth RM25k, but no luck for me, haha.

The organizer can look to add distance markers and separate water session for the different race categories. It will be better to start the longer distance categories first since they will took longer time to complete and the sun already up during that time.

The 10km category was flagged off around 7.40am. Very glad to complete the 10.25km race with the timing of 43.24 min. It had been an amazing feeling to cross the finishing line because it had been awhile since i can run freely without any complication from my ankle.

Lesson learned - always go for moderation in training. Thanks to Sophia Ho from Crucial Rehab for the rehabilitation session and thanks to Jason Fong for the recommendation. Thanks to my family and friends for all the support. Hopefully to be back stronger for next race. All is well.

The marathoner without legs It all happen on a fine day in December 2011. Mohd Sharifuddin Ezham was stationary on his bike at a traffic light intersection when a 5-tonnes lorry failed to stop and rolled over his leg. Due to the severity of his injuries, both his legs had to be amputated. He was only 25 then. Fast forward to today, Sharifuddin has achieved most able-bodied men can only dream off. So far, he has completed Six Half Marathons, 3 Ultra Marathons (50 km) and 4 Full Marathons. His 4th Full Marathon happens 2 weekend ago on the 27th April 19 in a time of 04:31:28. We hope Sharifuddin’s story will inspire all of us. Currently lives in Shah Alam, Selangor, he said his involvement in the marathon burns his spirits to move forward. He is now learning to swim to prepare himself to become a triathlete. As a triathlete, he need to master 3 disciplines i.e. Swim, Bike & Run This coming July 14th, Sharifuddin and his group of friends will be competing in the 5km & 10km distance in their wheelchairs. Let us all come together this 14th July and run/cheer on Sharifuddin & his team.

For those familiar with the local triathlon scene, the mention of the name Sabki will instantly bring in the image of a one-arm triathlete. To Mohd Sabki Arrifin, having only one arm has never deterred him from competing in multisport events. Sabki, a national Paralympic athlete and a well-known triathlete lost his left arm in a road accident in 2000. In 2004, he begins his swimming lesson with the objective to compete in the Paralympic events. In the following year, he shocks everyone when he competes in the 6.5 km Kapas – Marang Swimathon. Sabki continues to compete every year since that first race in 2005 and he also embarks into other multisport event (running, cycling, triathlon, duathlon and aquathlon). “I like to challenge myself and tell the world that I can still do it,” said Sabki who is currently based in Kuala Lumpur. Sabki will be racing in the 5 km distance under the 30-39 Prime Sprinters category at the Electrolux Home Run 2019.

KUALA LUMPUR, APRIL 29, 2019 – Organised by National Geographic in partnership with Gamuda Land, National Geographic Earth Day Run 2019 — Malaysia’s most anticipated eco-friendly run, was held on 28 April 2019 at Gamuda Walk, Kota Kemuning for the second year running. This year’s run was in the theme of Planet or Plastic? – a multiyear initiative from National Geographic, aimed at raising awareness of plastic pollution and reducing the amount of single-use plastic that enters into the world’s oceans. The run was also supported by the Ministry of Science Technology & Innovation, Environment and Climate Change with the presence of the Ministry’s Deputy Secretary General, Dr. K Nagulendran, who officiated the first flag off for the 15 km category.

In celebration of the new GParks Rangers programme introduced by Gamuda Parks, this year’s run welcomed a new category exclusively for children aged between 6 to 13 years old, upping the effort to promote environmental awareness. GParks Rangers are young ambassadors of Gamuda Parks, a special initiative set up to establish a benchmark to promote sustainability in how Gamuda Land develop its townships. The new addition in the run provided a fun platform to educate the younger audience on the implications of single-use plastic pollution to the environment.

Known for its initiative and commitment to creating sustainable townships, Gamuda Land returned as the official partner and venue sponsor for the second year to reinforce their support for National Geographic’s plastic-free initiative. “As National Geographic’s ongoing commendable effort is in line with Gamuda Land’s brand values, we are truly happy to lend

The first flag-off for the 15 km category kicked-started this year’s Earth Day Run at 6:30 AM while the 5 km and 2 km kids category started at 7:20 AM. Armed with a brand-new logo, a regional ambassador, an updated website and more, ASICS RELAY 2019 is all set to be a thrilling event when it launches in Southeast Asia from June onwards this year.

Running across four cities, ASICS RELAY 2019 kicks off in Jakarta, Indonesia (29 June), followed by Bangkok, Thailand (3 August) and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (7 September) before concluding the series in Singapore (12 October). This year, the Malaysian edition will see Sepang International Circuit being selected as the venue of choice, promising a different race experience to all running enthusiast.

KUALA LUMPUR, 19 March 2019 — Following the success of the IJM Allianz Duo Highway Challenge and the positive response the series has received over the past two years, IJM Corporation Berhad and Allianz Malaysia Berhad (Allianz Malaysia) have announced the extension of their partnership for this year's Duo Highway Challenge.

The popular run series will kick-off with the NPE Highway Challenge on 14 July with a unique distance of 21km half marathon challenge and 10km run respectively, followed by the Besraya Highway Challenge on 24 August which offers a much more challenging distance of the 26km and 13km run, compared to the 13km and 6km distances that was offered in 2017 and 2018. Since its debut in 2017, this year's challenge aims to attract more running enthusiasts with the exciting dditions in distance in the Besraya Highway Challenge.

Being the first ever duo highway challenge in Malaysia organized by Besraya (M) Sdn Bhd, New Pantai Expressway Sdn Bhd, and EC Pixels, this year’s challenge promises to be more exciting with the Besraya Highway Challenge being the series’ first night run, organized on a fully closed highway. The night run gives participants a cooler and more comfortable running experience while enjoying the scenic night view of the KL city skyline along the route. This year will also see the introduction of a relay run category for two runners with distances of 13km each.

“We are proud to announce the return of the IJM Allianz Duo Highway Challenge 2019 as it gives runners the assurance for continuity and aligns with IJM’s long-term plans to continue contributing positively to sports and the community. This year, the organizers aim to attract 17,000 participants. The NPE Highway Challenge is expected to attract 10,000 runners and the Besraya Highway Challenge 7,000 runners. Those who are quick on their feet will get a chance to win RM84,400. Runners will also get a special edition t-shirt when registering for the Duo Highway Challenge that is limited to 4,000 participants only.

Powerman Malaysia 2019 - Race Report

The world’s largest duathlon in the Powerman series, Powerman Malaysia 2019 was held on 2-3 March 2019 in Dataran Putrajaya. It has been quite some time since I posted my racing experience but Powerman 2019 was one of most memorable races that I really enjoyed/suffered. The classic category of 10km run, followed by 60km cycle and concluded with a 10 km run was more demanding physically and mentally but there was also short (half distance of the classic) and team relay categories to choose from.

The race flagged-off at 7am sharp for the classic category. The running route consisted of 10km (2 loops of 5km) with gentle elevation. There were total 3 water stations on each loop which was highly welcomed especially during the 2nd run as the weather was getting hotter. The transition area was well organized with clear signage and marshal directing the traffic. Next, the 60km (2 loops of 30km) bike route awaiting after the 1st 10km run. The bike route was very challenging as it combined many sharp turns, U-turns, narrow path and few long climbs. The cycling route became more congested after both classic and short categories were flagged-off. Hopefully, the organizer will consider to change the bike route next year. The 2nd run was the same route as the 1st run but extremely torturous under the scorching sun and also the long stretch of road before reaching the finishing line.

Overall, this is a fantastic event with glimpses of international atmosphere since Powerman Malaysia is one of the Asia Championships races. This year edition was slightly more happening compared to last year with challenging and tricky bike route. Completed the race at 23rd position under my age group of 30-34 with the total timing of 3:46:46 (slightly deteriorated from last year). Given my current condition, I was quite satisfied with my performance and was very proud of my old bike for the breakthrough. There are still so much to improve and i am slowly getting into better shape. Will continue to put in more effort and hopefully strike better result in the next race.

Kuala Lumpur, 5 March 2019 – More than 7,000 participants took part in the recent ILLUMI Fest Run Malaysia that took place at the Selangor Turf Club on 2 March 2019. The second edition of the ILLUMI Fest Run Malaysia saw family, friends and children come together for a neon fun, glow-tastic day.

ILLUMI Fest Run Malaysia is organised by Infinitus Productions Pte Ltd in collaboration with presenting sponsor, MPI Generali Insurans Berhad. This year’s festival offered participants another level of excitement through its new features introduced along the routes while being splashed with the special neon glow water.

Krishnamoorthy Rao, CEO of MPI Generali Insurans Berhad said: “The second installation of the ILLUMI Fest Run has definitely been a successful and exciting event, especially with new elements such as the Neon Playground and giant ILLUMI slide. Held for the second time in Malaysia, ILLUMI Fest Run saw participants enjoying each of its themed routes with numerous activities at the Race Village which included the Neon Playground that showcased giant installations of popular childhood games such as Hopscotch, Jenga and Tic-tac-toe.

The excitement started off with participants making their way through the Glow Mania zone while they danced and dashed through the glo tunnel of lights. After tackling the glow-tastic illuminators equipped with their fully charged neon blast, participants then made their way through a world of ultraviolet Bubble Pop and even stopped to take a selfie with loved ones at the Neon Life zone. The run ended at the Crazy Lazer zone as they partied towards the finishing line.

The fun continued along the routes at the Neon Playground that showcased interactive games such as Hop Scotch, Jenga and Tic-tac-toe for the runners to enjoy at the Race Village. Hanging glowing orbs known as the Glow Swing were decked with LED lights embedded in the swings that activated and changed colours as each swing moves. Another exciting element was the 3-meter-high Giant ILLUMI Slide at the festival village that helped participants cool down after their run as they slide into a pool of paint. The night ended with LIVE acts from recurring DJ Jenni F who brought the latest Hip Hop, Retro and Electronic dance beats together with DJ Tiger Ming. The music festival finale was definitely the kicker for the whole course as the runners ended the night on a luminescent high.

“ILLUMI Fest Run has definitely brought people from all walks of life to participate and engage in a healthy activity whilst having fun and it’s indeed the most gratifying part. We will definitely bring back ILLUMI Fest Run for our future events within Malaysia and the region. Jasmine, 28 shared, “overall it was a great experience! It is my first time here with my family. For me personally it holds a special place because I’m a Spinal Fusion patient, so completing the 4km run motivates me to be better and I will definitely participate in the next ILLUMI RUN!”

“My family and I really enjoyed ourselves, from the beginning till the end it felt like we were going to a party while being splashed by glow paint! Everyone had loads of fun and we got to say that the music is fantastic!” said Sharon Khor and family.

Emerson Dinesh, 30 shared his favourite moments during the run was going through each of the elements on route “The whole experience ended off perfectly well! The highlight of the event was experiencing the neon party at each pit stop as we got to dance and take pictures and what’s even more attracting to the crowd is the awesome music!”

Malaysia’s premier distance running event implements ballot system for public registrations due to tremendous response

KUALA LUMPUR, 22 February 2019: A new chapter has dawned on the increasingly popular Standard Chartered KL Marathon when for the first time in its history, public registrations were conducted using a ballot system. Successful applications were confirmed when Minister of Youth and Sports Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman officially activated the random computerised selection here today.

The Standard Chartered KL Marathon has seen phenomenal growth over the last decade with the 10^th Anniversary edition in 2018 seeing the highest attendance to date of over 38,000 participants. Public registrations for the 2018 event were snapped up within 10 hours of opening, leaving a lot of disgruntled runners who didn’t get a chance to register due to a variety of reasons, such as network congestion and poor internet connections.

This year saw a significant increase in loyalty registrations, where returning 2018 runners were given the privilege of signing up and securing their slot before registrations opened to the general public. Almost two thirds of the available slots were snapped up during this period leaving slightly over 12,000 slots across all categories remaining for public registrations. Hence, the ballot system was introduced this year to give everyone an equal opportunity to secure a race slot as potential participants could cast their ballot between 13 to19 February 2019.

“We introduced loyalty registrations in 2016 as a way of giving back to the running community who have strongly supported us, and continued to implement this in the following years” said Rainer Biemans, Project Director of SCKLM and Director of Dirigo Events, the owners and organisers of the multi-award winning event. “Since then, the take-up during the loyalty registrations consistently yielded about 40-45% of overall slots available. This year we were caught by surprise when the loyalty registration period saw more than 60% of available slots snapped up, which is why we have had to implement balloting for public registrations” added Rainer. “This way, everyone gets an equal chance to secure a race entry and will not be hindered by network or work issues.” Rainer also mentioned that moving forward, the balloting process would most probably be implemented right from the loyalty registration period.

Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman was given the honour to activate the random computerised ballot selection process whereby ballot winners were picked and immediately notified of their selection.

“It’s certainly a privilege to be involved with the premier distance running event in Malaysia. I have truly been inspired by the hard work undertaken by SCKLM to develop the sport of distance running by consistently putting on a world class event that attracts more than 38,000 participants from Malaysia and around the world,” said Syed Saddiq. “While the competitive aspect of SCKLM has provided talented Malaysian runners like Leo Tan and Muhaizar Mohamad with the platform to perform alongside elite international runners and raise their game, the heart-warming aspect of SCKLM is the commitment placed on making a difference through the Run For A Reason charity initiative,” added Syed Saddiq. “In fact I have decided to accept Dirigo Events invitation to participate in the Half Marathon for SCKLM2019 and if my preparations go well, I hope to do something to be able to give back to the running community too.”

The 2019 edition of SCKLM was given a boost late last year when Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia renewed their title sponsorship of the event for a further four (4) years. The Bank has been a steadfast supporter of the event since its inception in 2009 and is a major factor behind its success.

TwinCity Marathon 2019 - Top 15 Results

This year the Twincity Marathon celebrates it's 5 anniversary with 10,000 runners. The venue is back to Persiaran Flora, which was much more convenient compared to the last year's location at Magic Cyberjaya.

So access to the race site was pretty easy even though we arrived later as we joined the Half Marathon and 12km race. The organization was good as previous years; aid stations and safety cones were sufficient with wide running lanes allocated for runners. This is important because the routes in Putrajaya/Cyberjaya is well known for speedy cars especially at night or early morning.

The challenges this years was the new young veteran runners and the usual rolling hills of Cyberjaya/Putrajaya, sudden lights out in the middle of the race.

Also kudos to the organizer for introducing the checkpoint ticketing system at the finish line, where runners will get a printout of a preliminary results stating their timings at each checkpoint and their finishing positions before they are awarded with the finisher T and medals. This will ensure those whom have completed their race will be rightfully rewarded, and in addition a good approach to inform potential winners to stay back. So far, I have seen this practiced in Boston and Kyoto marathons.

In addition to the usual Open and Veteran categories, the race also include an 'Age grouper' award to all the top 3 runners in their respective age groups.
