The Allosphere is a tool for new ways of seeing enormous amounts of data – and quite possibly, ourselves.

The machine is egg-shaped, three stories tall, and located on the campus of the University of California, Santa Barbara. Scientists stand on a catwalk that runs through its middle, and wearing 3D glasses look at enormous representations of human brains, molecular bonds, economic data, even the invisible manifestations of quantum physics. The visuals stretch around vision’s periphery to simulate immersion in an object, and sound from banks of speakers provide other pathways to information.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, the Allosphere is an appropriate response to living in a world where, as Google chairman Eric Schmidt likes to say, we create as much data as in all conversation, ever, in a couple of days. In itself, and for what efforts to see big data mean, the Allosphere is among the Names You Need To Know In 2011.

On a recent visit, I stood in the middle of a giant human brain, constructed from 256 MRI images. We moved over folds and through color-coded lobes, the density of blood flow around us reflected in the pitch of a background thrum – higher pitches for higher densities.

I explored the bonds of 2000 zinc, hydrogen and oxygen atoms, an experimental lattice created to explore new solar cells that had taken five supercomputers six months to create. This time, the orchestra was the emission spectrum of electrons jumping to different orbits from the hydrogen.

You could look at data like this through columns of numbers, of course, but the use of color, sound and time makes for a vastly quicker and more comprehensive understanding. As we pile up information of all sorts, new tools for understanding like the Allosphere will become commonplace.

“Information technology systems, and the association of visualization with meaning, make the computer into a kind of instrument,” says JoAnn Kuchera-Morin, the Allosphere’s creator. “This will allow us to work with real information in close to real time. The more scenarios you have, the more you speed up discovery.”

Since then, Kuchera-Morin has added the number of pixels in the mix, for sharper visualization, and brought in colleagues from other data-rich fields to try and create new understanding of what they are doing.

These fields include areas of nanotechnology, where the categories of physics, chemistry and biology overlap and collapse on each other so as to create new kinds of science, and quantum mechanics, where experimental outcomes are usually seen only in blackboard-based probability formulas.

Companies like EMC, IBM and HP are meantime creating even more possibilities, through the capture and storage of all sorts of sensor, supply chain, and organizational and human behavioral data.

There is an undeniable larger result here. Humans build tools, and in turn tools remake people. With the microscope we became aware of a world of protozoa, airplanes made us creatures that fly, and phones connected our voices around the world.

The Web is clearly connecting us in new ways – so are the tools for understanding all the information the networked world brings us. New visualizations will, in time, help us see the world’s patterns and processes, and our relationship to them, entirely anew.

“I don’t know of any other way that these massive amounts of data can be presented ,” says Jamey Marth, director of the Center for Nanomedicine at UCSB. His own work involves such things as understanding the makeup and behavior of less-understood critical components of cells, like lipids and glycols, and how a cancer cell might bind with a nanoparticle.  “Understanding space and time in biological processes is very important…using this, I start to look at things in a different way.”

Marth notes that half the researchers who go into the Allosphere “see it as a giant fishbowl,” adding, “I don’t understand that.”

For a theoretical physicist, the issue is finding ways to see things that are entirely outside our finite, three-dimensional experience. “Even a helium atom withonly two electrons requires in principle a six-dimensional space,” says Luca Peliti, a professor of Statistical Mechanics at the University of Naples, and like Marth a sometime collaborator with Kuchera-Morin. “The exploration we are making on visualizing and sonifying the abstract and the multidimensional is likely to teach us a great deal about the limitations of our sensorial tools – and how to overcome them.”

Kuchera-Morin, whose original field of study some decades back was music, spent about $12 million over several years building the Allosphere. She is looking for another $7 million or so to make it fully operational, and another $1 million to $2 million for annual operations.

Whether she gets that money or not, the intellectual property, and the ultimately successful efforts to come to grips with unprecedented amounts of data, will change our understanding of the world, and ourselves.
