A Balancing Act

(Article submitted as a requirement in school on impressions for community clerkship. Submitted 24th June 2011.)

The earliest days of January this year were spent by ways of preparation for community clerkship. The batch had to attend two weeks of lectures regarding the activities, requirements, and basic know-hows in community organizing. For personal aid, still as part of preparations, talking to friends from the upper batches related to community work was also done with every opportunity.

It was in the last week of the same month when the formal immersion began. That first week was all about getting-to-know people, setting a first impression which is an important ingredient in building good rapport–an essence in a fluid relationship one must possess if he wants to succeed in his humble endeavor of community organizing.

In the foster home, one must be as cautious as if in a situation wherein you are deemed to walk in a lake with smoke coming from the water. The natural attempt would be to walk tipped-toe for you are in dilemma whether the smoke was a result of flaming hot lake water or from a frozen cold one. You can’t take the risk to walk on it without restraint unless you are already familiar to its attributes.

Schedule setting is not as easy as when you do your personal itinerary. You do not only consider your own time and your personal chances of accomplishing what you intend to do but it is a must that you take respect for the time of other people involved, may they be barangay leaders or a group of parents. And of course, setting an alternate schedule either for a day or another activity is wise so as not to waste time for one does not know how cooperative the weather will be.

RHU consultations–which started on the second week–and home visits were good grounds for interacting with the community people. Aside from the interactions that helps nourish the fragile relationship with the community, you get to learn from them clinically. As how it is described on the rules of conduct for students enrolled in community clerkship, the community is a “laboratory”–does not sound good if one would think of the word maliciously–but true in its good sense, a melting pot of wisdom may it be clinical or social.

It is a common opinion among non-medical and even health professionals that community organizing alongside with community health is an easy task. Though those are all plain and unqualified opinions lest they have done or currently undertaking community health.

Since one can only get close to perfection but never reach the improbable point, conflicts will always occur along your way. Thus, an open mind is necessary as well as patience and determination coupled with passion for community service.

Gratefulness should always be given away for every help of any kind from anyone among the community people. Just like being thankful, the lessons you learn in the community may be the same lessons you can learn at home, in a classroom, or in a hospital ward but they will all be germane everywhere.

Community health is a balancing act in its every sense. It is a balancing act when it comes to people, decisions, and intentions. One of the noblest things you can do on a balance beam.

Day 224.

Night prior to visit, it has been agreed that I must be there by 0800 hours. Or else... (details not to be disclosed due to non-disclosure pact. *wink*)

0600 Hrs. Still dreamy, I woke up to my mother's voice telling me to take a bath so I won't be late for school. Had to reply that I'll only pay a visit, there was no class.

0608 Hrs. Had breakfast. The usual milk and bread.

0614 Hrs. Hit the bathroom. Daily rituals. Skipped one. *wink*

0700 Hrs. Went off to see my Labs. *super smile*

0732 Hrs. Arrived at the downtown area. Waited for about five minutes for the jeepney bound to where my Labs was.

0744 Hrs. Arrived at the front gate. Shoebi was the one only there to welcome me. Then a voice was audible all of a sudden, it was not her's. It was her sister's. Apparently, she was still asleep. The idea of the "or else". Brilliant.

0748 Hrs. Finally, she was awake--opened the gates for me.

0750 Hrs. After leading me inside, she slept again. Asked if I could give her another five minutes. *okay-look*

0800 Hrs. Kept asking her to awaken.

0820 Hrs. Start of movie marathon. 127 Hours.

1100 Hrs. She cooked lunch.

1135 Hrs. Lunchtime. Chitchat. Love.

1240 Hrs. Movie-time again. Rabbit Hole--she was curious. Had to watch it with her. *my second-time to see it*

1440 Hrs. Recess. Chitchat. Love.

1500 Hrs. Uploaded a new profile picture for our facebook accounts. Coming out in the open with our faces together. *chills to the bones* *haha*

1520 Hrs. Movie-time again. She had to finish Buried. Kept observing her countenance. She was sleepy at times. But, managed to be fully-awake in the movie's last thirty minutes.

1745 Hrs. Had to go home. Tight Hugs. *wink*

For the first time in three years, I wasn't able to reveal two of my three annual posts before the year ends. Still to write about my 2010 Person of the Year and 2010 Place of the Year.

Had fun last night at Jasmin Beach Resort, Marabut, Samar with high school classmates and friends. It was a good change of decision. I knew it was my only way of enjoying the holiday season. Looking forward for next year's reunion.

2010 Event of the Year

The first year of the 2010's is just as eventful as the previous years. Or is it just that events are everywhere? We saw much from politics, sports, arts, the internet, and television. By the way, is there an uneventful year?

Let me name a few of the most notable events of 2010 based on my point of view.

It was an elections year. In Asia alone, around 18 national elections were held. Europe had the most number of general polls held with about 34. Oceania and South America had 6 and 7 polls respectively. Africa had some 23 elections. I find three among all of them noteworthy.

The Philippines elected its 15th President in a field of ten candidates wherein a Former President was included, through an automated polls. Results were known--although not official--in less than a day. Such a very surprising, or shall I say amazing, experience for a country who was very used to snail canvassing which usually declares a winner after more than a month from the election day. And, it was queer that an outgoing President who lost much of the nationwide approval, based on surveys, ran for a seat in the Lower House. A demotion, they said. Well, she eventually won a landslide if I'm not mistaken.

The British Parliamentary Elections in early May also made a buzz across the seven seas. After more or less thirteen years in government, UK's Gordon Brown-led Labour Party was relegated to the opposition side while a coalition government replaced it with Conservative David Cameron as Prime Minister and Liberal Democrat Nick Clegg as Deputy Prime Minister. Such change in the House of Commons did not only mean a change in leadership and British domestic policies but as well as how Great Britain will deal with its relations abroad.

Who wouldn't agree that the Burmese General Elections was an overdue? It was Myanmar's first polls in two decades. The polls was clouded with doubt not just from the country's opposition but as well as from the international community. The United Nations condemned it as fraudulent, along with some western countries. Worthy of mention about this fabled elections was the release of pro-democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi from house arrest and her party's refusal to participate in the process.

New leaders were elected everywhere across the globe. They made noise. But world attention was suddenly stolen by an exchange of artillery fires between socialist and democratic Korea. It happened in late November in the South Korean island of Yeongpyeong just adjacent to the two Korea's disputed sea border. The skirmish killed at least two South Korean marines and put a dozen of buildings on fire--enough reason to displace civilians. Seems like we are on the brink of a bigger war. Hope pressures won't build up and peace would remain in the peninsula.

This year, we saw how information has become easily accessible through the internet. The most important point was how our modern age transformed classified information--including military top secrets, government deals, unexpected statements from world leaders, and many others to mention--into public. How? The interantional non-profit organization WikiLeaks has done it all. Their website www.wikileaks.com publishes variety of information media from news sources and leaks. The magnitude of information shared by the website has been enough for it to earn criticism from world governments like the US due to it's potential threat to disturb international relations.

In June, the world danced to the tune of the 2010 FIFA World Cup theme interpreted by the Latin American superstar Shakira--the Waka-waka. It was everywhere. It was viral. Waka-waka eh eh!

It was the first time that the World Cup was held in African soil. South Africa won the honor of hosting the World Cup finals in an all-African selection over Egypt and Morocco in 2004. Preparations included building five new stadiums and upgrade of five which already existed in the country, and rehabilitation and modernization of infrastructures like public transport in host cities.

We saw action between the thirty-two best football teams in the world; with the month long spectacle ending in an all-European finals. The finals showdown was between reigning European champions Spain and two-time World Cup runners-up Netherlands. The finals score was 1-0, and Netherlands was denied of another World Cup for the third time. The Spanish had a heroes welcome at home carrying the much coveted World Cup trophy.

It was the most colorful, noisiest--mention vuvuzelas--and most anticipated event of the year. After all, it is the world's largest sporting event.

They say that "to see is to believe".

Which movie should I watch? I kept asking my self as I browsed on my database.

I knew that I'd be hungry by midnight so I went outside to buy sandwich crackers. The store was a block away--the one situated behind our block. With just more or less ten minutes after I finished supper, I still felt the weight of my full stomach, I decided to go out to purchase what I intended to.

As I unlocked the door, I found my self in soliloquy. Couldn't decide how many packs should I buy. Three, in case my nephew would ask for one I'd still have two. Maybe one, the boy might be asleep by then so he won't ask a pack from me anymore. Two, perhaps. Yes. Two. The kid will certainly be asleep by then and two servings would be the right one for me.

I stepped outside. The neighbors appeared to be negligent in paying their electricity bills. But, of course not! They're saving energy, I suppose--just avoiding inflated bills.

The street was clear. No bystanders. No dogs. Only parked vehicles.

As I walked towards the corner, I noticed the brightness of the sky. Towards the east, there was Luna. Shining with her more-than-half golden face. Her beauty out-shined every star near her. The sky was a scene to behold.

I reached the corner of the street. I advanced three or four steps still staring above, mesmerized by Luna's exhibition. Suddenly, I bumped into something. Rather, into someone. Good thing that she was an acquaintance--my brother's classmate in high school. So, simple apologies were enough. Of course, smiles as well.

I continued walking. I still took a glimpse of Luna every now and then.

Before I was able to reach the store, two kids caught my attention. They were talking outside their home, also beholding Luna's beauty. They talked loud enough. They were still audible even though you've already walked about five meters away.

Before I could go farther, Luna's spell lost its power over them.

"Do you believe that caterpillars turn into butterflies?" asked the boy, he was standing outside the house's gate.

"Yes!" replied the girl which looked younger, she was embracing the gate.

"I don't."

"Why?" she asked in return.

"Haven't seen one change." he said loudly.

"Oh, I haven't seen one either."

"Then why do you believe so?"

The little girl burst into a laugh. "It was what I was told. My dad saw one when he was a child."

"Okay. Do you believe in angels?"

The little girl knowing that the boy would ask her the same follow-up question answered, "Yes. Even though I haven't seen one."

The boy laughed.

"Same here," he said.

Just a I returned to the same street after I bought two packs of strawberry-flavored sandwich crackers, the two were nowhere to be seen.

The street was clean again.

No bystanders.

No dogs.

No little angels talking about themselves.

But I believe.

112th Philippine Independence

A hundred and twelve years ago.

It was four in the afternoon. Indios gathered in front of the Aguinaldo Mansion's facade. As described in history books, the air was festive--it was destined to be a day worth remembering. The youngest to become President, Emilio Aguinaldo, stood beside Ambrosio Rianzares Bautista which read the Declaration of Independence. At twenty passed four, Julian Felipe's composition was played for the first time as the flag sewn by Teodora Agoncillo, her five-year-old daughter Lorenza, and Rizal's niece Delfina Herbosa de Natividad was hoisted for the first time as well. From being Indios, we became Filipinos to the rest of the world.

A hundred and twelve years passed. We are a hundred and twelve steps away from where we started as a free nation. But, is that 112th step different from the first?

It is apparent that we have improved as a nation since the first waves in the air of the three-stars-and-a-sun. We are a state of equal regard to any free state in the world. We exercise self-government, just as how other independent nations take control of themselves.

The Philippines now plays a vital role in shaping not just itself but also the world. Lately, the Philippines presided the UN Security Council to work on establishing policies regarding the world's nuclear arms. Such a very important role for attaining world peace and order. In 2003, being one of those third worlds who struggled for freedom, the government sent representations to help establish a government for the newly-independent nation of Timor Leste. Who helps maintain peace in Haiti and Liberia? Well, we are one of those nations which has the most number of UN Peacekeeping Missions dispersed around the globe.

There are many things about what we've become compared to what we were a hundred and twelve years ago. Colonization was the main issue why the concept of independence came into existence on the fertile soils of this paradise of seven thousand one hundred and seven islands.

At the moment, we are still facing issues that are obstacles to the road of true freedom. We must work towards overpowering neocolonialism. We must open our eyes as a nation and recognize that freedom is not just about self-government. It should be known to us that freedom is also about people working together as one towards a good cause wherein corruption and personal interests are left behind.

Every Filipino who fought for the privileges that we enjoy and even abuse now deserves our respect. We must thank those who have sacrificed their lives for the freedom that some contemporary Filipino who cannot appreciate the worth.
