today's issue of peprally junkyard is dedicated to france and masculinity.

first point to consider: Napoleon was one of the baddest emperors of all time. Straight military genius, and brasher and more egomaniacal than any dipset member on their best day. (he took the fucking crown from the pope and put it on his own head at his coronation, pictured below). He pretty much had russia turned out and strutting the track for decades. So that is doing something right. On the other hand, he was also a dude that was so short and hung up on it, that now he has a complex named after him. Good show on your military dominence, but don't be so sensitive. Man the fuck up your excellency.

Marcel proust: He got sick and had to stay in bed for so many years he wrote one of the world's longest novels. Not exactly hunting elephants or driving muscle cars, but it is full of inward spiraling self reflection for hundred page stretches and brimming with obscurantist vocab. Too hardcore for me to fuck with. I dare you to try.
He ain't hemingway, but he kicks hemingway's ass.

And now, as if these examples weren't enough, it is obvious that no one told these dudes that french men aren't supposed to be stereotypically tough. Why is nostalgia so powerful? Even when it's not yours, or when it's not even images that you have firsthand experience with, nostalgia has a way of working into your thoughts and coloring your perspective. Given a relatively small amount of time (historically speaking, 52 years is a blink) these images are evocative in a way that wasn't originally intended. Someone's cherished footage of their child is no longer specific to the child or the parent, but becomes generalized into representing a time period that's gone by to me, who was born (almost) 20 years after this was shot and have no relation to the subjects of the film. The original magic of the footage has traded places with a broader meaning. And it's really stirring to watch.
