IPL Match 35: KKR vs KXIP Preview

The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will take on Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) again in the 35th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2013 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata on Friday. They had met once this season which KXIP won. The match will begin at 8:00 pm IST.

KKR conceded a four-run defeat to KXIP in their previous meeting at Mohali. They will be keen to take revenge at their home turf (Kolkata) on Friday.

KKR are at the bottom half of the table with four points after winning two of the seven matches played so far. They will take on KXIP after conceding three consecutive defeats. They posted a good total of 159 runs in the previous match against Mumbai Indians but failed to defend. Wounded by a series of defeats, the defending champions will be keen to start winning matches from here on.

KXIP are placed at the middle of the table with eight points after winning four of the seven matches played. They will be high on confidence when they take the field on Friday, as they won the previous two matches. They will be keen to crack into the top four of the table with a win against KKR.

KKR and KXIP have met 10 times in the past and have won five matches apiece. They have met once this season, which KXIP won by four runs.

Sunrisers Hyderabad team defeated Punjab Kings XI team in IPL 6 league match played in Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Hyderabad on 19th April, 2013. Sunrisers won the match by 5 wickets. Host team winning the match at Uppal stadium is rear. But Sunrisers won the three matches played on the home ground. The team played seventh matched till now and won 5 matches.

Punjab scored 123 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in 20 overs. Captain Gilchrist was the top scorer for the team with 26 runs in 25 balls. Later chasing the target of 124 runs, Hyderabad reached the target in 18.5 over by losing 5 wickets. Hanuma Vihari was the top scorer for Hyderabad team. He made 46 runs in 39 balls with 5 fours. Punjab team won the toss and elected to bat first. The innings began slowly. In the first four overs, the team scored only 17 runs and lost Mandeep. Gil Christ managed to hit 3 fours. Karan Sharma claimed the wickets of Valthaty and Gilchrist. David Hussey and Piyush Chawla came for batting and tried to score runs. In the 18th over Punjab team lost 3 wickets. In the 19th over Gurukeerat was bowled.

Sunrisers team which began chasing the low target lost the first wicket in the beginning of the innings. Vihari played a good innings and Parthiv supported him. Vihari and Parthiv added 42 runs to the second wicket. In the end of the innings, Ashish Reddy and Ferrera scored 30 runs in 16 balls to win the match.

For any team to win the match, the team captain has to be in good form and should inspire his team mates. In IPL 6, five teams have foreigners as captains and four teams are led by Indian players. Virat Kohli, Rahul Dravid, Gautam Gambhir, MS Dhoni are the successful captains in IPL 6. Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardane, Mathews, Ricky Ponting and Adam Gilchrist are the captains that are failing to perform well and are becoming a burden for their teams.

Angelo Mathews Named Captain of the Pune Warriors India for IPL 6

Sri Lanka allrounder Angelo Mathews has been named the skipper of Pune Warriors India for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Mathews who has been with Pune Warriors for past two years, is the captain of Sri Lanka national team for ODI and Tests and brings with him a rich experience of having played International cricket and also captaining an International side.

Pune Warriors also announced Allan Donald as the head coach of the team while Rob Walters will be the fitness trainer and fielding coach. Praveen Amre will continue to be the assistant coach.

Managing Director of Sahara Adventure Sports Limited Sushanto Roy said on Thursday the decision to appoint Mathews skipper was "unanimous" and taken by senior players and team management.

"We had many options of international and national cricketers to choose from within the existing squad but we chose Mathews as our captain as we are confident of his leadership abilities. All the senior players in the team are happy with the choice and it is a joint decision taken by the senior players and team management. We now have a correct mix of youth and experience to launch an aggressive IPL Season 6 campaign," Roy said through a press statement.

Mathews said, "It's a great honour to be offered the captaincy and I am grateful to the team management and franchise owners for the faith shown in me."

"For me personally this is a great chance to gain leadership experience working with a multi-national squad and a very exciting opportunity given the enormous talent within our young squad," he added.

No Sri Lankan players to play in Chennai for IPL matches

With the political pressure not subsiding, IPL governing council has decided that Sri Lankan players will not play in Chennai during the T20 tournament.

The IPL governing council met after the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa refused to host them in view of the prevailing anti-Sinhalese sentiments in the state.

Jayalalithaa wrote a letter to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh saying that IPL matches would be permitted in the state only if there were no Sri Lankan players, umpires, officials or support staff in these matches beginning April 3.

“The IPL Governing Council met this afternoon to discuss the issue. The security of all involved in the IPL, whether players, spectators or those working in the stadiums, is of paramount importance to the BCCI. The Governing Council decided that Sri Lankan players will not participate in the Pepsi IPL 2013 League matches in Chennai and will advise the nine franchises accordingly,” Rajeev Shukla, chairman, IPL said in a statement.

Altogether 13 Sri Lankan players, two of whom are captains of their respective teams, are taking part in the sixth edition of the league which will start from April 3. Chennai, the home for Chennai Super Kings, will stage 10 matches in all, including two eliminators, and will continue to remain a venue.

In the letter to the Prime Minister, Jayalalithaa said BCCI may be advised by the Centre to prevail upon the IPL Organizers not to allow Sri Lankan players, officials, umpires and support staff to take part in the tournament in the state.

"In view of the popular antipathy and anger in Tamil Nadu against the actions of the Government of Sri Lanka, the Government of Tamil Nadu is of the view that IPL matches involving Sri Lankan players, umpires and other officials should not be played in Tamil Nadu," she said.

For the league stages, Mumbai Indians, Delhi Daredevils and Hyderabad Sunrisers will have to bench key players like Lasith Malinga, Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara, respectively for their matches in Chennai. Barring Kings XI Punjab, all the other franchises have at least one or more Sri Lankan players in their squad.

Injured Clarke ruled out of IPL 6

Australian captain Michael Clarke was ruled out of IPL, starting next week, as he has been advised to take rest for at least seven weeks under the rehabilitation programme for his chronic back injury.

Clarke, who was bought by Pune Warriors for $4,00,000 in the IPL auctions early this year, underwent scans for his back and hamstring problems soon after he arrived home from India where his side suffered a humiliating 0-4 Test series whitewash.

Cricket Australia Chief Medical Officer Justin Paoloni said Clarke would need at least 7-10 weeks rest as part of rehabilitation programme for the degenerative disc problem that has afflicted him since 17 years of age.

Clarke missed the fourth and final Test against India in New Delhi, which Australia lost inside three days.

"Michael Clarke had scans that confirmed his current lower back injury is an exacerbation of previous issues he has had with his spine. Michael is having intensive rehabilitation for both his back and hamstring but is still 7-10 weeks away from returning to training and playing," Paoloni said in a CA statement.

"As always, we need to manage this carefully as there are potentially serious consequences with further aggravation. He still has pain with basic activities and is not back to full function as yet," he said.

"Michael's intensive rehabilitation program will be overseen by the CA medical team and back specialists in Australia," he added.

Clarke's injury status and the rehabilitation programme meant that he will miss the April 3-May 26 IPL. It also laid to rest speculations that he could be coaxed to captain Pune Warriors in the cash-rich Twenty20 League by offering $2 million following reluctance shown by Yuvraj Singh.

CA, however, said Clarke would be able to be a part of the Australian team for the Ashes series in England in July-August.

"He also has a hamstring injury that has been a concern for most of the summer and will complicate his return. We are confident that it will not affect his Ashes preparation but will know more over the coming weeks," CA said in the statement.

On his early return home following his inability to regain fitness in time for the Delhi Test, Clarke had said he would "listen to the experts" regarding his battered and fatigued body and his IPL participation.

"I'll have scans and spend plenty of time with physio, fingers crossed it turns out okay. I would be silly to make that decision (on the IPL) right now, I think I need to wait on the results, listen to the experts and then make a plan from there.

"I've had my back issues since I was 17 years of age so this is no different. In regards to my hamstring I hurt it throughout the Australian summer and it has just lingered on. I haven't had the opportunity to get that 100 per cent fit due to how much cricket we've had."

The superstar will be joined by his "Jab Tak Hai Jaan" co-star Katrina Kaif for her debut performance on stage in Kolkata. The Indian stars will have company from popular Hollywood rapper Pitbull. The rapper is known for his hit albums "M.I.A.M.I." (short for Money Is A Major Issue), "Rebelution", "Armando", and "Planet Pit".

"SRK loves the city of joy and he is already very excited to perform there. Katrina will be performing there for the first time," a source said, according to Indo-Asian News Service.

"When Pitbull was told that he is being invited to perform at the opening ceremony of IPL and SRK would also be performing as well, he agreed to come within minutes."

Sharukhan's Red Chillies Entertainments Pvt Ltd has been signed as the promoter for the IPLT20 opening ceremony.

Kolkata is hosting this year's IPL, as the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) team owned by Sharukh Khan won the trophy in 2012. As per tradition, the team which wins the previous year's league will host IPL the following year.

Last year's opening ceremony happened in Chennai. The event saw big bollywood stars like Salman Khan, Kareen Kapoor Khan and Priyanka Chopra grooving to popular songs. Actor Amitabh Bachchan recited Prasoon Joshi's poem. American pop sensation Katy Perry entertained the audience with her popular numbers including "Teenage dream."

This year's T20 edition will have nine teams including Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Delhi Daredevils, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kings X1 Punjab, Rajasthan Royals, Pune Warriors India and Sunrisers Hyderabad. The Hyderabad team is the latest to join the IPL, after the cash-strapped Deccan Chargers were terminated by the IPL governing council following its failure to produce a ₹100-crore bank guarantee before the Bombay high court. The new team, Sunrisers Hyderabad, is owned and promoted by the Sun Group.

The cricket matches will begin on 3 April. The first match is between Knight Riders and Delhi Daredevils at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

Kevin Pietersen ruled out of IPL 6 with knee injury

The upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) has lost one of its biggest drawcard on the eve of the tournament with Kevin Pietersen being ruled out due to injury.

The 32-year-old Delhi Daredevils superstar will miss England's final Test against New Zealand, which starts on Thursday, BBC reported.

The England and Wales Cricket Board said on Wednesday that Pietersen felt pain in his knee before a four-day match earlier this month, and that a recent scan showed "bone bruising and possible cartilage damage to the knee cap."

The ECB says Pietersen will return to England for further treatment and is expected to be sidelined for six to eight weeks ruling him out of the sixth edition of IPL which begins on April 3.

The last Test between England and New Zealand starts on Friday.

Waqar Younis to be Sunrisers Hyderabad's bowling coach

Newly launched Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad have announced that former Pakistan speedster Waqar Younis has joined their ranks as a bowling coach.

The Sunrisers will be making their debut in IPL 6, starting April 3, and already have Australian Tom Moody as coach and former India batsmen VVS Laxman and Kris Srikkanth as their mentors.

Younis will work alongside the likes of Ishant Sharma, Dale Steyn and Clint McKay in the Sunrisers team.

The 41-year-old Younis will be on a six-week contract, according to the Times of India. The newspaper quoted a source as saying, "We have zeroed in on Waqar [Younis] as our bowling coach... We presume that his vast experience will help us in the IPL."

Waqar confirmed the news to TOI over the phone from Sydney. "Yes, I have decided to join the Sunrisers Hyderabad. I am very happy to join the IPL and I hope my experience will help them," Waqar said.

The Sunrisers open their IPL 6 campaign against Pune Warriors at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Uppal on April 5.

Brett Lee to be Kolkata Knight Riders' bowling mentor too

Australian speedster Brett Lee, who spearheads Shah Rukh Khan's Kolkata Knight Riders' pace attack, today replaced Pakistan great Wasim Akram as the team's bowling mentor.

Lee, who has retired from international cricket, will shoulder the twin responsibilities in the upcoming Indian Premier League scheduled to be held in April-May.

Lee took up the position after Akram, who held it for three years, resigned expressing his desire to spend more time with his family as his two sons Taimur and Akbar are barely in their teens.

"We are fortunate that someone of the caliber of Brett Lee, who in addition to being a key member of the team, will also mentor the bowling unit," KKR CEO Venky Mysore said in a statement.

"The bowling unit and the entire team will benefit from Brett's leadership in this area."

While accepting the role, Lee said, "The experience with KKR over the past three years has been fantastic."

"We have become a closely-knit unit under the leadership of skipper Gautam Gambhir and Head Coach Trevor Bayliss. As we get ready for IPL 2013 as the defending champions, I am honoured to take on this additional responsibility," he added.

Wasim Akram steps down as KKR bowling coach

The pace attack of Kolkata Knight Riders, 2012 IPL champions, may be left feeling “orphaned” when they start their campaign in IPL 6 in April-May. Wasim Akram, their bowling coach and mentor, will not be available for the upcoming season as he wishes to spend more time with his family.

A statement in the KKR website says Akram, who had been a key member of the team’s dugout for the last three seasons, is believed to be keen to spend more time for his sons Taimur and Akbar who are barely in their teens. Akram’s wife Huma had passed away after a brief illness in 2009.

Venky Mysore, the CEO of KKR, said: “Wasim Akram will be badly missed. He is a legend and a great motivator to have around the team. However, we fully appreciate the reasons why he will be unavailable. We hope this break will give him the much needed time to be with his family. We hope to work with him in the future.”

The “Sultan of Swing”, as Akram is referred to, had been a part of the team since 2010 and has played a mentor’s role in the real sense of the term in grooming the team’s bowlers — teaching them the nuances of their craft and the art of surviving in Twenty-20 cricket. Sami, who made his international debut in the short series against Pakistan in December, has acknowledged the influence Akram has had on his growth as a bowler.

The KKR management, meanwhile, has decided against naming any replacement for Akram and hope that the legend may be in a position to join the team should they qualify for the Champions League T-20 later in the year. The team, according to sources, will be giving veteran allrounder Jacques Kallis the additional role of guiding the fast bowlers.

In a significant addition, Trevor Penney — Indian team’s fielding coach — has been appointed in the same role as part of the support staff under head coach Trevor Bayliss. “We are delighted that Penney will join the excellent support staff of KKR comprising head coach Bayliss, assistant coach Vijay Dahiya, Physio Andrew Leipus, strength trainer Adrian Le Roux and analyst A.R. Srikkanth. Penney is a fine professional and will no doubt add to the depth of the team,” Mysore said on the club website.

Ricky Ponting to lead Mumbai Indians

Former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting will replace Harbhajan Singh as captain of the Mumbai Indians for the sixth edition of the Indian Premier League, starting April 3.

Pointing, who retired from international cricket late last year, was bought by Mumbai Indians at a base price of USD 400,000 during the IPL players' auction held in Chennai earlier this month.

Mumbai Indians said in a statement that decision to name Ponting as the skipper for the forthcoming season was taken after consultation with its newly-appointed chief mentor Anil Kumble, head coach John Wright and icon player Sachin Tendulkar.

"Ricky has a lot of experience to lead a competitive and a high-profile side like Mumbai Indians in the IPL. Sachin readily agreed to my suggestion that Mumbai Indians is best served when he leads the batting unburdened by the rigours of captaincy. It was our idea (Sachin and mine) to bring in Ricky as the captain of the Mumbai Indians," Kumble said in the statement.

On his new role in the Mumbai Indians team, Ponting said: "It's a huge honour and I thank Mrs Ambani and the Mumbai Indians management for the faith they have reposed in my abilities.

“Mumbai Indians has the potent combination of Indian and international cricketers and I look forward to leading the team to play to its full potential."

Virat Kohli appointed captain of Royal Challengers Bangalore

Royal Challengers Bangalore named Virat Kohli as captain of the Bangalore-based Indian Premier League side on Wednesday for the sixth edition of the mega event.

Kohli takes over from former New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori.

Kohli’s appointment follows a productive IPL VI auction in which RCB, who finished a disappointing fifth last season, strengthened their bowling line-up significantly and added capable all-rounders to increase the amount of flexibility in the selection of the playing squad.

“We are delighted to announce Virat as our captain. His hunger to learn, lead, motivate and set an example is unquestionable,” team owner Vijay Mallya was quoted as saying in a press release.

Virat, apart from being one of the most successful batsman for RCB, is the eleventh highest run-scorer in overall IPL history with 1639 runs and a strike rate of 119.28. He has scored eight half-centiries and is also the third highest run scorer in Champions League T20 history.

“Glad to be appointed captain of RCB. I thank the owners for reposing their faith and I am looking forward to the challenge and the responsibility to carry the team to greater heights,” Kohli said in a statement issued by the team.

The middle-order batsman has not been in the best of touches but RCB will hope for him to come good as he has in the past.

Delhi Daredevils swap Ross Taylor for Ashish Nehra

The Delhi Daredevils have made a swap with the Pune Warriors India, exchanging Ross Taylor for Ashish Nehra, in the ongoing IPL Player Trading Window. The Delhi-based franchise had acquired Taylor, the former New Zealand captain, from his previous team, Rajasthan Royals, ahead of the 2012 season.

The Pune franchise will be Taylor’s fourth IPL team – he represented Royal Challengers Bangalore in the first three IPL seasons, before playing a season each for Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Daredevils respectively.
“We are elated to have a batsman like Ross Taylor in our ranks. He will add muscle, panache and of course, experience, to our middle order in the forthcoming season,” Sushanto Roy, Managing Director, Sahara Adventure Sports Ltd, said.

Ashish Nehra, the India speedster, was part of the Delhi Daredevils squad in the 2009 and 2010 seasons. His best IPL performance was in 2009, when he took 19 wickets from 13 matches for DD. He had earlier represented Mumbai Indians in the inaugural season in 2008. He was bought by Pune Warriors India in the 2011 Player Auction, but missed the 2011 season due to injury. He played for PWI in 2012.

“Ashish Nehra will constitute an integral part of our bowling attack in the 2013 season. We were the best team at the league stage in 2012, and with a player like him around, we are confident that we will go the distance,” T.A Sekar, Head (Cricket), GMR Sports, said.

The only other player transfer to have taken place this season is that of T. Suman from Mumbai Indians to Pune Warriors India.

Murali Kartik signs for RCB from Pune Warriors

Indian spinner Murali Kartik will be playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the sixth edition of the Indian Premier League after Pune Warriors released him from their squad on Friday.

Left-arm spinner Kartik has earlier played for Kolkata Knight Riders before being picked by Pune Warriors during the fourth edition of the cash-rich league.

His economy rate is close to seven and has taken 93 wickets in 127 Twenty20 matches. He has played eight Tests and 37 ODIs for India.

According to IPL sources, Kartik was sold to RCB at his previous base price of USD 400,000.
