I did something wonderful last weekend! Bear with me as I explain why I’m sharing this and why I think it benefits you. See, in my teens I waterskied a handful of times, and I remember it as being so unbelievably fun. But in almost 30 years I hadn’t done it. Until last weekend….

But was I even going to be able to get up out of the water? What if I fell all the time?

Yup that’s me in the picture. What was also so much fun was how well it went. I popped up on my first attempt and was slaloming as if it was 30 years ago. And, boy, did I feel good afterwards!

As a side note I should mention something you may not know, and that is that I always cheat.

I’m kidding of course when I say “cheat”, but the truth is that it wasn’t the first time in 30 years at all. I had practiced several times the day before, and on the boat ride – even while my kids were trying to psyche me out. Yes, I had practiced in my head.

Well talk more about the art of visualization and mental preparation another time though. The reason I mention this event is because of this email I received:

"Per, I appreciate your emails, but I have a problem. I used to sing solos many, many years ago, but haven’t sung much lately. The problem is that I am 65 hears old, and although I love the idea of being able to sing again, it is probably too late."

There is no denying that there are many physical changes in our body as we age. There is no denying that we lose muscles strength and flexibility. However, too often we make "age" the culprit – or the excuse, if you will. Realize that many young people – even kids – also run into voice and other physical problems. So although there are certainly things we will never be able to do as well as we once did, it is certainly never too late to have fun. It is never too late to do activities that inspire us and make us energetic and vibrant. It is never too late to learn and develop.

You should know that although we don’t keep track of the ages of our members of The Singing Zone, there are many who are well into their 70s and 80s who have spontaneously written and expressed their gratitude and joy.

The Singing Zone is not a program where a certain age or skill is a prerequisite. Although many professional and semi-professionals are members, there are just as many who have never sung before. Since we are about developing awareness and taking you from where you are to where you want to go, your level or age is really irrelevant. Singing is indeed for everyone.

I remember I felt I was “too old” when I was 26. Old or young is really a mental state. As our bodies transform our minds transform, we find new activities that inspire us. Singing is one of those activities that has no age limit, unless we are judging they way we sound towards some limiting ideal. My grandmother starting painting well into her 60s, my dad still sings in the choir. There have been studies that have shown incredible improvement among 80 year olds who started weight training, and we can go on and on.

What do you think a 100-year-old would think when a 65 year old kid talks about things being too late? Take a look at this video of Roger Gentilhomme one day after he turns a 100 years old and then post your comment below.

I’d like to announce that I have now formerly elevated my career to become a golf coach… and that without having played golf. Hmm…. Now, what is this all about you may wonder, and what on earth does it has to do with improving your singing? Well, take a look at this email a received:

This email is from a member of The Singing Zone who has worked on the Sing With Freedom program for a couple of months.

We live on a golf course, and I want you to know that you have talents you may not know about – I am utilizing your tongue and throat suggestions, and my game is better than it has been for the last 20 or 30 years. I had not realized the tension I was holding in this area until I have been using your practice suggestions – thank you so very much!

Now, I am of course joking about me becoming a golf coach and I certainly don’t take credit for her improved golf game. However, it is fascinating how we can improve in all aspects of life as we develop our awareness. In the last post I talked about awareness in regards to fear. I mentioned that much of my teaching is about developing awareness. Rather than claiming something is “right, I prefer guiding the person to try A versus B and experience the difference. Discoveries bode for far greater learning than just doing things because the teacher says so. (And yes, this applies to the singing home study course also).

Now here’s my question/challenge/exercise for you: Please post something that you have become aware of and how it has helped you. I, and I am sure many others, would certainly appreciate to hear if what we have done in The Singing Zone has lead to discoveries – either in your singing or outside singing.

Or maybe you haven’t done the course and can still think of ways that your life has improved in some way after you became more aware. Maybe you’ve become aware of patterns of behavior, tension your holding, thoughts that keep repeating. Maybe you’ve become aware of how you talk or behave to someone or how certain foods don’t agree with you, or something totally different.

Please share and it will be a great awakening and learning for us all.

Thanks!

So what was the point of this video? Let’s look at a couple of important issues:

1) Become aware. There is no way we are going to overcome fears unless we become aware of them. Unfortunately, we tend to avoid that four letter word and instead cleverly disguise it with more pleasant sounding words. So what is one of the most important keys to grow, develop and succeed?

Yes, the magic key is awareness. As you may know, much of my teaching is about developing greater awareness of body and mind. When you become aware it is far easier to do something about it, and therefore improve significantly.

2) Just do it. When you are facing something uncomfortable, realize that "just do it" is a very good piece of advice. It’s more than a cute marketing slogan for sports shoes.

3) What happens when you "just do it"? When you are afraid, your body will tense up. Your breathing becomes shallow. The whole body goes into a fight or flight state of emergency. Your mind races, anticipating the future. (Fear is always about a perceived future). Most people will exit the situation without a clue of what actually happened in their body.

For many this is going on daily, although on a more subtle level. And every day these subconscious fears are holding you back.

As I was heading up the tower, my goal was to be aware of the fear. As I noticed it, I was immediately able to relax my body. Many times during the ascent I tensed up, but since I was aware I was again able to relax.

Realize though that there is no way you are going to be able to relax if you don’t know what relaxation feels like. If you don’t know how to put your body in a resourceful state when you aren’t under stress, how are you going to do it under stress?

If, for example, you are not able to relax muscles in a comfortable range when you sing, how do you think you are going to be able to relax on high notes? If you are not able to release a free, powerful, confident sound when you practice, how do you think you will be able to do it during performance?

This is why you want to develop an extraordinary awareness during practice. As you do, you develop rapidly. You learn to coach yourself to perform well under any pressured circumstance.

Also realize that greater awareness of self leads to greater awareness of others – i.e. you become a better performer.

4) Challenge yourself. Remember that it is always easier to NOT do something than to do.

P.S. I later went on the smaller free fall that I showed you earlier in the video. This time I was able to relax even better (everything is easier the second time, isn’t it?). Frankly, I felt so relaxed that I thoroughly enjoyed the view and experienced no fear at all. It was quite phenomenal. I am so glad I did it.

So go ahead. Challenge yourself! Take action! Do it! Then share your experience below.

American Idol – The Grand Finale. Season 8 have come to its end and we had the final face-off between Adam Lambert and Kris Allen. Listen to the songs and read my comments below. I also give my overall opinion on competing in arts and music. Maybe it will surprise you…

Adam – Mad World

The first song was the singer’s own choice. Adam chose Mad World – a song he had sung a couple of weeks ago. Once again, he performed it beautifully. Personally, I felt the smoke and the trench coat made it unnecessarily dark. I felt the song was more powerful the previous time he sang it, sitting on a stool center stage. He was more vulnerable then and it was more like he was the innocent participant in a “mad world”. Now he came across as spooky and dangerous as if being very much a contributor of the “mad world”.

http://www.americanidol.com/videos/season_8/performances/adam_lambert_mad_world_2

Kris Allen – Ain’t No Sunshine

I loved this performance for the very reason it was so vulnerable. Kris did what he does best and communicated honestly with his heartfelt, likeable personality. In addition, he showed his musicality and sense of rhythm in the middle part and ended it once again vulnerable and intimate. A great song choice and great performance

http://www.americanidol.com/videos/season_8/performances/kris_allen_aint_no_sunshine_2

Adam Lambert – A Change Is Gonna Come

The second song was assigned by the producer. Frankly, I felt bad for Adam. Vocally this was absolute world class. However, a bluesy song like this isn’t exactly a crowd pleaser. It doesn’t give Adam a chance to interact with the audience and take advantage of the fact that he is in a huge auditorium. It doesn’t allow his charisma to come through. Adam is the person who can bring the house down, but this isn’t the song for it.

http://www.americanidol.com/videos/season_8/performances/adam_lambert_a_change_is_gonna_come

Kris Allen – What’s Going On

Kris Allen was at least given a song with a little more groove to at. I agree with Simon who said it was like a couple of guys singing in an apartment. Although it was a nice performance, I felt it was just unnecessary small and intimate for a big stage like this.

http://www.americanidol.com/videos/season_8/performances/kris_allen_whats_going_on

Adam Lambert – No Boundaries

The final song is a newly written song that both had to sing. Not exactly the most singer friendly song. I felt it came across as stressful with few breathing spaces. It was the first time I have ever experienced Adam as “pitchy” in parts. The music mix was weird and the back-up vocals overcrowded his vocals at the end. Oh well, that wasn’t Adam’s fault. The thing with Adam’s performance was that he went for the pain rather than the uplifting spirit of the song. I would have suggested he take this opportunity to really engage the audience, to inspire them, use the size of the stage and take the opportunity to be the mega star who can create a one-of-a-kind experience in a full-packed stadium that he is capable of.

http://www.americanidol.com/videos/season_8/performances/adam_lambert_no_boundaries

Kris Allen – No Boundaries

Just as with Adam it came across as stressful. However, the problem lies more with the song and the key. Because of this, Kris never got a chance to really use the song as the uplifting anthem that it is meant to be either.

http://www.americanidol.com/videos/season_8/performances/kris_allen_no_boundaries

We should also realize the minimal time these artists have to prepare for their performances. In addition to learning new songs every week, they have also been working on the songs to perform in the show the day after. Not only do they have to learn and rehearse all the songs, but also work on the choreography and staging, as well as fulfilling a packed media schedule.

So Kris Allen won and, as I wrote in last week’s blog, I am not surprised. He certainly deserves it, and I doubt coming in as number two has much negative impact on Adam’s career.

Back when Chris Daughtry was the only rock singer, everyone knew that if he had won and been forced to record the winning song it would have been disastrous. Being voted out as number 4 was exactly what I hoped for because it would be the best thing for his career.

I think once we got into the top 10 this has been perhaps the most exciting American Idol season. Adam Lambert was instrumental in raising the bar and challenging the creative side of the artists. Kris Allen blossomed into a terrific artist and found how to put his musicality, creativity and personality into his art in the most compelling way.

As we all know, competing in arts is quite meaningless as it is a non-measurable activity. However, I dare say that the competition between these singers have challenged them to become better performers. And that is the benefit of competition. As I have written before; this is also why we love our competitors – because they make us better.

It will be very interesting to see what happens to these artists in the future. Congratulations!

American Idol is down to the remaining three – Danny Gokey, Kris Allen and Adam Lambert. 3 of the performances that you can watch here below stood out in my opinion, and what is interesting is that…

… they all had their brilliant moments. It’s a joy to watch and listen to artists being creative, don’t you think?

Danny Gokey – Dance Little Sister

Paula Abdul chose this song for him. I thought it was a great choice. I love this groovy side of Danny. Terrific vocals. The end, just as last week, was magnificent. The only thing that continues to surprise me – and even more so with this song – is why he starts of behind the mic stand. There is no reason in a song like this. If he immediately would have interacted with the audience he could have had the entire audience and millions at home on their feet dancing. Now hat would have been memorable.

http://www.americanidol.com/videos/season_8/performances/danny_gokey_dance_little_sister

Kris Allen – Apologize

Have we seen Kris by the piano before? I don’t remember that I have. So for me it was a surprise – a pleasant surprise. I already know he’s cool with the guitar but I didn’t know of his piano playing. That added an additional dimension to him as an artist. I don’t see Kris as a “vocalist”. I seem him as a terrific musician and artist who also sings great. His strength is his ability to resonate with us – the audience. It was once again a nice, heartfelt performance.

http://www.americanidol.com/videos/season_8/performances/kris_allen_apologize

Adam Lambert

Wouldn’t you agree that as soon as he started to sing you were drawn in? Sometimes Adam is considered “theatrical”, but Adam is also the one who can be the most stripped down and vulnerable. Notice that he is just standing there with his arms at his side. He is “doing nothing”. That is the hardest thing for beginner actors to do – to stop acting and just “be”. This was a wonderful, powerful opening. The intent of what he is singing about becomes crystal clear. Then when the song builds, it builds because of his emotions. It’s as if he can’t stop himself. Now, that is good acting. He allows emotions to happen rather than try to create them.

http://www.americanidol.com/videos/season_8/performances/adam_lambert_one

Danny Gokey – You Are So Beautiful

I think this was Danny’s best performance ever in American Idol. Pure passion. Great job Danny! It’s hard to fathom what he has gone through in the last 10 months and I really respect and applaud him for how far he has come. I wish Danny the very best in the future.

http://www.americanidol.com/videos/season_8/performances/danny_gokey_you_are_so_beautiful

Kris Allen – Heartless

Kanye West wrote this song and interestingly he performed it on one of the American Idol shows a few weeks back.
And now Kris Allen comes out and does something completely different. It was a phenomenal rendition and I completely agree with Randy Jackson that it was far better than the original. Being so bold and creative in such a high pressured situation shows us what a great artists he is. He’s confident, expresses the song great and makes it really groovy with just an acoustic guitar and his voice. It’s a joy to watch and listen to.

This is also such a smart choice from a competitive point of view. Kris makes himself hip, young and current for an even broader audience. Kris is without a doubt the most improved contestant.

http://www.americanidol.com/videos/season_8/performances/kris_allen_heartless

Adam Lambert – Cryin

So Adam takes on Aerosmith. We all know no one can sound like Steve Tyler and many have sung Aerosmith songs and not succeeded. After all, it is impossible to not be compared to the original (unless you do something completely different). Adam doesn’t need to sound like Steve Tyler, because Adam is Adam. Awesome performance once again. I don’t agree with Randy Jackson when he said that Adam should be doing this kind of record. I think his audience could be far bigger than a heavy rock record would appeal to. I think Adam is even better with a song like “One”.

http://www.americanidol.com/videos/season_8/performances/adam_lambert_cryin

I really enjoyed all these performances. So who will win American Idol? I frankly couldn’t care less. They will all have great careers. Adam Lambert is already absolute world class in what he does. I don’t think we have had anyone so accomplished in American Idol previously. He has a remarkable voice, and he is a phenomenal actor, artist and communicator.

Despite that, I wouldn’t be the least surprised if Kris wins – i.e gets the most votes. And that would be deserving too.

What do you think?

American Idol is down to 4 performers and as usual I’ll give you my take with the intent of looking at what we can learn from these performances. Last week I got attacked for blasting and ripping apart a performer. How about that? There is a first for everything.

So once again (just as I did last week), I’ll start off by saying that we have 4 really great singers and performers here. That doesn’t mean there is no room for improvement. In fact, the reason that Adam Lambert, Allison Iraheta, Kris Allen and Danny Gokey has come so far, is because they are always working on improving their craft. If they hadn’t been open to ciriticism they wouldn’t have gotten this far. I suggest we all are open for criticism if it is in an effort to point out what can be even better. We also all need to be able to dismiss opinions that don’t help us. Need I say that this is only my opinion? Here is my opinion of this week…

Adam Lambert – Whole Lotta Love

Only Adam Lambert can take on Led Zeppelin and get away with it. Once again a superb performance. I have been even more excited with some of Adam’s previous performances, but that is mostly because I don’t love this song all that much. It’s a little on the monotone side in the high range for me. Adam also has great depth to his voice and I love it when he mixes it up.

http://www.americanidol.com/videos/season_8/performances/adam_lambert_whole_lotta_love

Allison Iraheta – Cry Baby

Another solid performance from Allison. I felt she was working a little unnecessary hard in the volume department, and it became a little more shouting than normally, instead of just raw and edgy. But once again, she was absolutely truthful in her expression. Allison is going to have great career no doubt. Hope she keeps her voice in shape.

http://www.americanidol.com/videos/season_8/performances/allison_iraheta_cry_baby

Kris Allen – Come Together

I give Kris the prize for the most improved. He has grown into a bona fide star and if he finds the right material I think he will have a great career. There is plenty of room for improvement when it comes to his vocal abilities, but the great thing about Kris is his personality and musicality that he puts into each song choice. He is cool and does his thing with joy and passion.

http://www.americanidol.com/videos/season_8/performances/kris_allen_come_together

Danny Gokey – Dream On

I love Danny and think he is a terrific singer and great musician and artist. I’d better state that first before someone decides to attack me for trashing someone. However, I did not feel that this was Danny at his best. I think Michael’s John’s made a big mistake last year when he chose to sing Dream On and feel the same with Danny. Few people can pull off those rock screams truthfully. Danny stated in the interview before that he felt the pressure of everyone expecting the scream at the end.

I’ll share a secret with you singers out there who would like to accomplish those rock screams: IT IS NOT ABOUT VOLUME.

The distortion does not come from volume. Here Danny screamed until he was blue in his face and totally blew his vocal cords apart and there was no pitch what so ever in the scream. This is in stark contrast to a Steve Tyler who screams on pitch but with extreme distortion. Luckily, Danny’s was covered in extreme reverb and light effects so it still came across as kind of cool.

And we certainly can’t accuse him for holding back, so good for him

The thing is that I really didn’t feel that Danny was connected to what he was singing about – not in the beginning and not in the end. He pushed so hard in the chorus that it became aggressive. The text of Dream On is not aggressive at all – it is exceptionally inspirational – a cry to “dream on” and “sing with me” before it is too late. Steve Tyler in Aerosmith (who did it originally), does not have to scream that forcefully with volume to accomplish the distortion in the high pitch. Less physical effort and more true passion is the name of the game. I still think Danny is awesome, though

http://www.americanidol.com/videos/season_8/performances/danny_gokey_dream_on

By the way, did you see Allison Iraheta’s goodbye performance of Cry Baby? She took it to another level and completely owned the stage. Brilliant!

What do you think?

American Idol – top 5. We certainly have five great performers in the running. They also had an exceptional “mentor” this week. If you saw the show you got a glimpse into why it is not without reason Jaime Foxx is such an exceptional actor and performer. Here, together with the links to the videos, is my take on this weeks’ performance ….

Kris Allen – The Way You Look Tonight

Jaime Foxx said it best. Kris is not there to win the “Throat Olympics”, he is “just there”. He is who he is. He accepts it and is confident about who is. He didn’t to anything fancy, but he is present, honest and he becomes very likeable.

http://www.americanidol.com/videos/season_8/performances/kris_allen_the_way_you_look_tonight

Allison Iraheta – Someone To Watch Over Me

Now that is passion. Talk about sharing her soul. She is always so genuine and vulnerable. Perhaps the most vulnerable performer of them all.

http://www.americanidol.com/videos/season_8/performances/allison_iraheta_someone_to_watch_over_me

Matt Giraud – My Funny Valentine

Hmm… I didn’t feel this one on the same level as, for example, Allison. I felt he became too focused on notes and rhythm this time, rather than allowing himself to become caught up in it emotionally and honestly express the song. In the first couple of lines he was trying to do too much, and then unfortunately it became more about showing off his voice rather than expressing true love.

http://www.americanidol.com/videos/season_8/performances/matt_giraud_my_funny_valentine

Danny Gokey – Come Rain Or Come Shine

The ending was superb. I loved it. He totally went for it and let loose. The beauty is that it is always the ending we remember. It’s the emotion we are left with at the end of the song that counts. Now we remember the confidence and swagger that the judges talked about. On the other hand, if the ending hadn’t been there, it would have been a very different story. Danny has yet to be totally comfortable behind a mic stand and I am surprised that he has chosen to use the mic stand the last three performances. The awkward movements, eyes wandering about, hands fiddling around with the mic stand in the beginning, comes from nervous/ self-conscious energy and not the expression of the song. But again, with such an ending we couldn’t care less. Bravo. Let’s skip the mic stand next time, Danny

http://www.americanidol.com/videos/season_8/performances/danny_gokey_come_rain_or_come_shine

Adam Lambert – Feeling Good

The star has done it again. Adam is always having fun. It was perhaps a little over the top this time in the theatrical department, and I can see how it might tick some off, but theatrical in Adam’s world is still never about being fake but always about being genuine (as I’ve written about in previous posts). Adam will win the vocal Olympics and he knows it, but he doesn’t use his voice just to show off. He still makes it real in the context of the song.

http://www.americanidol.com/videos/season_8/performances/adam_lambert_feeling_good

What do you think?

American Idol and we have 8 singers left. Some keep surprising. Some express more truthfully than others. Some fall into performance traps. See the performance videos and see what I mean here…

Adam Lambert – Mad World

Adam does it again. I’ve never though of the original version as a great “vocalist” song, but Adam turns it into a one-of-a kind vocal performance. Once again he uses his vocal range and dynamics not to show off, but to express truthfully.

http://www.americanidol.com/videos/season_8/performances/adam_lambert_mad_world

Allison Iraheta – I Can’t Make You Love Me

Allison had me before she opened her mouth. When she looks down and up again she is already completely into the emotion context of the song (And it’s not because she looks down – I don’t care where she looks). From when she sings the first line (turn down the lights) until the end I truly believe here. I really empathize with her when she sings “I can’t make you love me if you don’t”.

http://www.americanidol.com/videos/season_8/performances/allison_iraheta_i_cant_make_you_love_me

Anoop Desai – True Colors

This was my favorite performance form Anoop. Last week he just went for attitude rather than truthful expression. I still don’t understand why he hasn’t chosen a song that is more fun where he can use his natural charisma. The problem with Anoop is that although he has a beautiful voice he doesn’t fully grasp what he is singing about. In this song he is singing to a person who is down and sad. Why does that mean that he needs to be down and sad? In fact, if you were to inspire a friend to make them feel better because you see their true colors, would you sit on a stool and look like the world is coming to an end?

http://www.americanidol.com/videos/season_8/performances/anoop_desai_true_colors

Danny Gokey – Stand By Me

I am surprised Danny chose the mic stand again this week. Last week he admitted it was out of his comfort zone and he became noticeably self-conscious with his fiddling around with the microphone – or the “I-don’t-know-what-to-do-with-my-hands” syndrome. This week it is much better. However, not surprisingly, the song and his performance goes to a whole new level when he steps away from the stand. Had he done I earlier this whole song would have been sensational. It was still great though.

http://www.americanidol.com/videos/season_8/performances/danny_gokey_stand_by_me

Kris Allen – All She Wants To Do Is Dance

I’m liking Kris more and more. He’s cool. He’s Fun. He’s quirky. He’s charming. He let’s his charm and likeability come through in his songs – exactly what I wished for Anoop. I can see why he has many fans.

http://www.americanidol.com/videos/season_8/performances/kris_allen_all_she_wants_to_do_is_dance

Lil Rounds – What’s Love Got To Do With It

When they announced she was singing Tina Turner’s ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It”, I said to myself “please don’t come out looking like Tina Turner”. This is becoming uncomfortable to watch. Four weeks in a row she has turned into a karaoke rendition of the original artist. I don’t know who the real Lil Rounds is and I don’t become as emotionally involved in her song as I would like. It’s a bummer, because she sure has a great voice. This I also why it’s great for singers to take acting classes. I mean real acting classes where the training is about learning to be truthful, spontaneous and vulnerable in the moment – i.e to stop acting.

http://www.americanidol.com/videos/season_8/performances/lil_rounds_whats_love_got_to_do_with_it

Matt Giraud – Part Time Lover

One of Matt’s best performances. The best thing with Matt is that he is unpredictable. Sometimes it hasn’t worked, but sometimes it’s great. It very much comes down to song choice for him. I’m excited to see what he does next.

http://www.americanidol.com/videos/season_8/performances/matt_giraud_part_time_lover

Scott Macintyre – The Search Is Over

Not so sure about the guitar. The problem here is that the song becomes a little “shouty”. It’s a tendency Scott has that compresses the sound rather than makes it rich, warm and powerful. If he would discover how easy it is to get more power with far less effort, he would become far more dynamic and passionate in his expression.

http://www.americanidol.com/videos/season_8/performances/scott_macintyre_the_search_is_over

American Idol is down to the top 10 performers. Let’s watch the performances and see what we can learn from them. I found it exceptionally interesting this week with Smokey Robinson as guest and the phenomenal Motown songbook to work with. Here is my take on what happened…

Matt Giraud – Let’s Get in On

Matt is improving every week. He starts off great by the piano and I feel he’s honest when he says: “been trying to hold back this feeling for so long”. He gets up and, again, I believe he really honestly does want to “get it on”. Great performance.

http://www.americanidol.com/videos/season_8/performances/matt_giraud_lets_get_it_on

Kris Allen – How Sweet It Is

Kris had a wonderful performance last week. This time he does a great job again. Great groove. Great musicality. He’s having fun and allows his personality to shine. Sometimes playing an instrument can lock up the artist. Here I felt his guitar playing enhanced his performance because he was so loose.

http://www.americanidol.com/videos/season_8/performances/kris_allen_how_sweet_it_is

Scott MacIntyre – Can’t Hurry Love

I wished he went wild on the piano. We heard a couple of riffs that gave a flavor of what he can do on the instrument. I feel he sings this song unnecessarily nice and polished. He’s holding back a tad and it doesn’t quite come alive. Part of this was the song choice. I hope he finds a song where he feels comfortable to really let loose and surprise himself.

www.americanidol.com/videos/season_8/performances/scott_macintyre_you_cant_hurry_love

Megan – For Once In My Life

The main issue here for me is that she sings the song without any dynamics. It’s a very one-level-calling-out approach – borderline yelling – all the way through. I do like her personality though and the cool depth in here voice. I also like the fact that she approaches the audience and becomes quite engaging.

http://www.americanidol.com/videos/season_8/performances/megan_joy_for_once_in_my_life

Anoop Desai – Ooo Baby Baby

Anoop can surely sing. He’s got a great effortless way of using his voice and sings the song with great dynamics. When he really makes a song his own, he’s going to become phenomenal. However, so far he’s acting the songs rather than living them (although acting them very well). This is why he becomes more serious this time than what is really called for. This is also why he becomes a little self-conscious about the camera. His eyes wander throughout the song, which is just because he’s not hundred percent involved in the song. I would love to hear him sing a song where his fun, charming personality can really blossom.

http://www.americanidol.com/videos/season_8/performances/anoop_desai_oo_baby_baby

Michael Sarver – Ain’t Too Proud To Beg

Hmmm. This gets a little strange. The reason is because he becomes a dual personality. The song is about begging this girl for a last chance, but at the same time he is smiling, flirting with the audience and trying to be charismatic. It’s not working because he doesn’t believe in what he is singing about. If he wants us all to dance along, a different song would have been better.

www.americanidol.com/videos/season_8/performances/michael_sarver_aint_too_proud_to_beg

Lil Rounds – Heat Wave

Lil has a remarkable voice. The thing with Lil is that she is too busy paying tribute rather than making a song her own. She mentions that she wants to sing it to make Martha and Diana Ross proud. Last week she talked in the same way – she said she wanted to honor country music. This comes across in her performance. She sings great, but it is hard to completely identify with her. I agree with the judges that a slow song would have been better for her. The bottom line is that she sings great but there is no real “heat wave that is burning inside” her (as the lyrics say). If she allows herself to be spontaneous and become surprised throughout a song, she could be sensational.

http://www.americanidol.com/videos/season_8/performances/lil_rounds_heat_wave

Adam Lambert – Tracks Of My Tears

Adam is doing the very thing that I mentioned was lacking in the last couple of singers. Adam is about the absolute truth (which is why he is also a good actor). Last week, he was not into trying to sound country, but chose to do something completely his own. This week he certainly wants to honor Smokey Robinson and his creation. So what does he do? He asks the songwriter: “What inspired you to write it?” Adam wants to get into the skin of a song. Adam completely feels a song and allows himself to experience spontaneous emotions – i.e. real emotions within a rehearsed song. Notice that he never looks into the camera even once. There is no need to, because that’s not what the song is about. He is completely absorbed in the song. When he sings “I need you”, he really means it. As a result, we are moved and he gets a standing ovation from the songwriter. That is how you honor the writer.

http://www.americanidol.com/videos/season_8/performances/adam_lambert_the_tracks_of_my_tears

Danny Gokey – Get Ready

Very good again. Great energy. Great fun watching him. His first line is “I’ve never met a girl that makes me feel like you do”. I feel he could have done even more with that line and the rest of the song. He could have used the “here I come” sections to get the crowd on it’s feet and have the house rocking. Then he would have been the memorable performance of this week.

http://www.americanidol.com/videos/season_8/performances/danny_gokey_get_ready

Allison Iraheta – Papa Was A Rolling Stone

I love Allison. That was some powerful ending. Talk about putting an exclamation point on your performance. She owns the stage, moves great and has a very unique voice. I hope her voice holds up.

www.americanidol.com/videos/season_8/performances/allison_iraheta_papa_was_a_rolling_stone

So here we go…American Idol is heating up. My intent is to blog about each episode from my perspective as vocal and performance coach. We’ll take a look at performances and see what we can learn from them. This week we had the 13 finalists sing Michael Jackson songs. How did that go?…

Overall, I thought it was an excellent week and I’m excited we have a very strong group of singers/performers this year. Frankly, I feel this group is far more exciting than the group of last year. The other reason this week went so well is because they sang Michael Jackson songs. Not because Jackson’s repertoire is so brilliant, but because in a competition like this it always serves you well to sing songs where the original artist has a weaker voice than yourself.

Whether you want it or not, you will always be compared to the original artist. That is why girls always fail when they try to sing Whitney Houston or Mariah Carey songs. However great they are, they always hear comments like “the song was too big for you”. Likewise, when a male with a not so powerful voice tries to sing an Aerosmith song it will undoubtedly fall flat. You will always subconsciously be compared to the original whether you like it or not

In my blogs last season I commented many times on some of the singer’s tendencies to get stuck hiding behind the mic stand. This year, the performers are already far better at engaging the audience. I also commented on the tendency to walk out on stage with a mindset of “needing to prove yourself”. The judges up the pressure by saying exactly things such as: “You have to prove yourself”. And that is the very trap many fall into. We, as an audience, don’t enjoy a performance where you are trying to prove something. You don’t want to go on stage and feel you are “auditioning”, that you are being judged that you are there to prove your worth. You are there for one reason alone: And that is to engage the audience and have a phenomenal emotional experience together with them.

And that is exactly what Danny did…

Danny Gokey – Pretty Young Thing

Imagine if Danny would have stayed behind the mic stand – even if he sang with passion and emotion. It might have been great, but nowhere close to what is became. Now he engaged and he had fun, and more importantly he allowed himself to be spontaneous. Overall it was an excellent performance

Anoop Desie – Beat It

I think Anoop is really cool. He’s got a great voice, but didn’t shine as he could have. Anoop has a wonderful, easy going, charming, funny personality. This time he chose to sing “Beat It”, without any of that charm. He chooses to go for a tough attitude and sings it very aggressively. After a while, he goes out and interacts with some audience members in a very charming way, although he’s in the middle of angrily telling us/someone to “beat it”. There is a disconnect here because he is not interacting out of the context of the song. It shows that he’s not real. He is forcing the “toughness” and is posing rather than truthfully living the song. He’ll be really interesting though when he is completely truthful and allows his real personality to shine

Lil Rounds –

Lil is a phenomenal singer. She had the disadvantage of going out first. She sings the song great, has a real nice personality and moves well. But it could be even better. She has the potential to be sensational and in coming weeks she might be. Here she is not. How come? Because there is nothing that surprises us. And the reason nothing surprises us is because nothing surprises her. She doesn’t allow herself to be spontaneous. (Part of that is probably the nervousness of being first). She goes through the song, executes it well, but all the moves are too measured. It’s too smooth, too choreographed. She’s no doubt a great singer and I’m excited to see what happens later.

Adam Lambert – Black or White

In every American Idol, we have seen singers grow on us and some have become world class artists when they have found the right material. Adam Lambert is already a world class singer and I hope he does find the right material. Since he has such an incredibly powerful voice with a wonderful range he can do so many things with it. It is never about trying to hit notes or trying to reach high notes for him. Since his voice is so developed he can instead truly express. He certainly doesn’t hold back and he doesn’t force the voice either. He can instead be spontaneous, which is exactly what good vocal training should lead to in my opinion.

He completely owns the stage and he is 100 percent there to have an emotional experience with us. You see how he in the beginning of the song spontaneously approaches someone in the audience. Take a look at what he does when he sings the line: “Don’t tell me you agree with me when I saw you kicking dirt in my eye”. Now that is real passionate anger and it comes out of what has built up within him throughout the song up to that point. Notice how his emotions have gone on a roller coaster ride through the song. It’s on a completely different level of truthfulness than Anoop’s “posing”. Then after that line, Adam softens, since his anger is not directed to the audience. On the contrary, he relates to the audience and we relate to him and he is likeable. Now, Adam has a special style and if one likes his style or not is a matter of personal preference. It will be interesting to see how he handles song choices in the future and if he can continue to surprise us.
