MY DANCESPORT STUDIO IN COLLABORATION WITH THE<strong> PERAK SOCIETY OF PERFORMING ARTS (PSPA)</strong> WILL HOST THE 3RD IPOH INTERNATIONAL DANCESPORT CHAMPIONSHIP 2014 WHICH WILL BE HELD ON THE 11TH OCTOBER 2014 AT THE GRAND VALLEY BALLROOM, KINTA RIVERFRONT HOTEL, IPOH.

Do you sing, dance & love to perform?......We WANT You!!!

The Perak Society of Performing Arts (“PSPA”) invites young, enthusiastic & expressive young persons to join in at our Junior Associates Conference (“JAC”) 2014.

This is a 2 day holiday programme, a project supported by the Perak state government, run by the PSPA in collaboration with P.O.R.T.(People of Remarkable Talent) as an educational adventure for youths to experience first hand the start of many performing artistes’ journey, prepare & experience an audition, learn to use a camera, prepare a personal profile and get advice from professionals.

Our mission for JAC 2014 is to develop talent and to help youths to move forward in the field of performing arts. It will be especially meaningful for young persons to hear about the journey of professionals and receive advice on how to overcome obstacles.

Suitable candidates will be invited to be A PART OF THE PSPA TALENT POOL WHICH WILL BE SUBMITTED FOR SELECTION TO PROFESSIONAL FILM AND PRODUCTION COMPANIES.

A Night With the (Barefoot) PSPA Singers Rehearsal

Following a successful performance at Perak Bar last month, the choir is now busy preparing for their upcoming PSPA Singers Concert on 16 November 2013. We sneaked into their practice session and shared what we saw.

In a relaxed mood, the choir leader, Marianne Poh ran down the performance details with the members.

The choir members studying the performance notes with Marianne Poh. It certainly wasn’t an easy task since all singers are part-timers and their togetherness are driven solely by passion and love for music.

A journey through the ages in the world of singing does not only stop at classics or contemporaries.

The PSPA Singers are proud to present such a performance together with three prominent singers from Thailand. The PSPA choir members are from all walks of life and they will not be belting out just songs but well known repertoires as well.

The performance has an interesting programme. The first half of the show consists of repertoires by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart from his well-known operas : Don Giovanni and Così fan tutte.

These comedic (buffa) operas reflect a lighter singing style instead of the stereotypically dramatic and tragic styles. The character of Don Juan in Don Giovanni portrays a fictional libertine (undesirable) and seducer. The character of Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte (“Thus do all women”), was considered by many as Mozart’s comedic gem, a cynical character faces a test of faithfulness in love and romance. Although classified as a comic opera, it blends in melodrama as well and was a revelation then in a rather uptight society.

The second half performance will consist of musicals through the ages from the light to the serious. Amongst those includes songs from the 1959 musical, the Sound of Music, with “My Favourite Things, Edelweiss” and the epic romantic musical Les Misérables with “One Day More, Do You Hear The People Sing”.

The 10th Malaysian Choral Eisteddfod (MCE) Choral Competition

The Malaysian Choral Eisteddfod (or MCE, formerly known as the Young Singers Choral Festival) was founded in 2003 by two Malaysian choral conductors, Ms Susanna Saw (now Music Director of

the Young Choral Academy) and Mr Mak Chi Hoe.

It aims at providing a channel for young singers to learn, interact and perform. A growing number of choral music enthusiasts have ever since been exposed to a wide spectrum of international choral trends and developments. This annual event has been instrumental in promoting choral music in Malaysia, serving as a music educational platform. Since the MCE became international in 2009, the event has raised attention on an even wider platform.

Choral conductors and choirs have found the Eisteddfod in Kuala Lumpur to be a hub of choral education in the Southeast Asian Region.

Perak Society of Performing Arts will be organising together with the Young Choral Academy and Dana Belia the 10th Malaysian Choral Eisteddfod (MCE) Choir Competition which will include school choirs, children's choirs, young adult choirs from this region. The aim is to provide a platform for choirs to showcase their passion for choral singing through workshops, competition and fellowship. With the vision to promote choral development in Malaysia, international judges will be invited to judge the competition and give their expert assessment to encourage the improvement of these talents.

A Total of 16 choirs will compete in four categories.

PSPA is hopeful that it will draw talented singers not only to participate in this competition, but to enjoy Perak's warm hospitality and wonderful local delicacies. It will promote fellowship among our local talents with visiting talents.

In English, in a NEW, OUTRAGEROUS Production!

La Traviata is simply the most famous romantic opera ever - told using some of the most recognizable tunes in classical music. A very beautiful and very young woman (usually sung by someone who is neither) falls head over heels in love with a very handsome young man (also usually sung by... right, you got it!). This UK production is set in modern London, sung in English, and performed by singer-actors who are actually the right age... and cute! The classics come alive!

The original opera by Verdi, first performed in Venice, Italy in 1853, was adapted from the famous novel, The Lady of the Camellias, 1848, by Alexandre Dumas, and was based on a true story. A scandalous true story!

Which gave the opera a very real, contemporary feel for 19^th century audiences.

This version has re-imagined the setting, and set the action in today’s' London in that modern phenomenon, a burlesque club. Instead of a wealthy aristocrat, the Alfredo character becomes the modern equivalent, a yuppie stock trader. The Violetta character becomes a nightclub singer, and... Well, why give away all the plot!

Come, be swept away as Verdi would have wanted!

But despite all the updating, the production takes care to preserve the grand-opera heart of the piece.

The 10th Malaysian Choral Eisteddfod (MCE) Choir Competition is back this year!!!

Young Choral Academy (YCA) proudly announced that the 10th Malaysian Choral Eisteddfod (MCE) Choir Competition will be held in Ipoh, Perak this year. YCA’s aim is to provide an avenue for choirs to learn and showcase their passion for choral singing through series of festival, workshops, exchange programmes and competition. And this year it is made possible with the co-organizing committee from Perak Society of Performing Arts (PSPA) and Dana Belia, whom has believed in YCA’s vision in promoting choral development in Malaysia.

Ipoh is a capital state of Perak and the city is very much shaped with the architectural mix during the colonial era. There are several historical buildings from the British Colonial that remains functional today which includes the Railway Station, the Town Hall and the Court House. Ipoh has come a long way since its’ early days as a mining driven town, and today it boats itself as a peaceful town with, cave temples, hills and most attractive is it’s great variety of food and especially the notable origins of Old Town White Coffee.

So during this year end school holidays, come join us for a weekend of choir competition and a getaway to Ipoh.

The competition will have 4 Categories, which are:C1: Children's Category (aged 7 - 13 years old)
C2: Youth Mixed Category (aged 13 - 18 years old)
C3: Youth Equal Category (aged 13 - 18 years old)
C4: Open Category (mixed voices, aged 19 years and above)

As he earns his place in the troupe, he befriends another apprentice, Siu Ngau, and catches the attention of not only the Manager’s daughter, Fei Mui, but also the Manager himself who sees Ah Kit’s potential.

As love blossoms between Fei Mui and Ah Kit, the friction between the aspiring star and Fui Koh increases. An inevitable showdown follows. To what lengths will each go to protect what they hold to their hearts so dearly?

AWARDS FOR WOMEN IN PERAK

In conjunction with the Internationa Women's Day, the Perak State Government is presenting the inagural Mutiara Perak Awards paying tribute to women in Perak state who have contributed immensely to the State of Perak socially and economically.

Nominations for the 2012 Mutiara Perak Awards can be submitted to the organising secretariat at www.reperak.com/mutiaraperak. Printed nominated forms can also be obtained from the office of Perak Society of Performing Arts, Pejabat YB Dato Hamidah binti Osman and the Perak State Secretariat.

The 2012 Mutiara Perak Awards will be held on 29th April 2012, at a gala night at the Kinta Riverfront Hotel & Suites, Ipoh, where the Award Winners will be announced and recognised.

Closing date for the nomination submission will be on 16th April 2012. All forms much reach the relevant offices by 16th April 2012.
