Hooray for Hulu!

Hulu is an online television site. You can watch old shows like Lost in Space, The Big Valley and Barney Miller.

Or you can catch up on shows you missed, like Bones. Fox had allowed a few of their shows to stream on Hulu, but the other networks were lagging behind.

Now ABC is streaming some of their shows (on a day-by-day rollout) on Hulu! This is so great! I would watch ABC shows on their own site, but I prefer Hulu's interface. For one thing, ABC's video stops at the end of a commercial and you have to manually start it again.

Now I'll be able to watch Lost straight through! Woot!

A sweet old musical starring Judy Garland that sees the Smith family through the year before the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis.

A family of seven sings their way through summer romance, Halloween highjinks, the threat of a job transfer, A Merry Little Christmas and a glorious spring. The trolley clangs, Margaret O'Brien is adorable as a ghoulish little girl, and Judy falls in love with the boy next door.

It's rather pleasant, and might make a nice Christmas or Easter tradition.

The crown of the Statue of Liberty finally opened for the first time since 9/11/01, and among the tourists to tromp through the crown were Aaron Weisinger and his girlfriend, Erica Breder. Aaron proposed, Erica accepted and a new tradition is born.

I just watched the latest episode again, and I think Wakefield's helper is Chloe.

In the church, you see Wakefield walking across the sanctuary just as the car pulls up, which draws everyone's attention to the door. Chloe's there, and that's when she disappears without a sound. Wouldn't she have gasped or screamed, even involuntarily?

Wakefield keeps her alive to trap the others, and Cal comes to her rescue. She leads Cal onto the bridge. She jumps off the bridge voluntarily, because Wakefield knows that Abby and Henry can see what's happening. I think her jumping was a ruse, and she's still alive.

Or she may not have wanted Cal to be killed, and jumped when Wakefield betrayed her.

I was a little frustrated with some of the plot holes this week. Trish should have shot Wakefield in the Cannery when she had the opportunity. Shane should have known that Wakefield had a three-food-reach advantage with his gigantic knife on a stick. And Cal should not have been able to lift 100-pound Chloe out of that storm drain, having just had a bullet dug out of his shoulder and being full of amateur stitches. Cal should have been much, much weaker.

Wakefield being able to kick in the Cannery door, and take it right off the hinges puts him in the "unnatural strength" killer category. Thinking you can take him out with a shotgun, let alone a knife, is rather foolhardy.

Michael Jackson Tribute

Not long after I heard the surprising news of Michael Jackson's death, I thought briefly about the "Thriller Dance" convicts in the Philippines. It turns out that they were thinking of Michael Jackson. Without much time, they put together a tribute to Jackson that isn't long on choreography, but is still pretty neat.

Wine: 2006 337 Cabernet Sauvignon

The wine's description: "mocha, dark cherry, spice and blackberry."
The smell: deep, rich, spicy
The taste: full-bodied, thick, warm, heavy, spicy, fruity, complex. It claims mocha notes, but I don't taste it.
Opinion: I really like this one. It's heavy and warm, and would be great to add a little extra to a steak-and-potatoes meal. I think of this more as a cooler weather wine.

I just watched John Cleese in Wine for the Confused. It was a beginning beginner's guide to wine. He talks about how wine is made, major types of California wines and how to choose and describe the wines you like when you try them. He offers these tips:

Trust your palate.
Try to learn accurate words that describe the taste that you like.
Try to find a local wine shop where you like and trust the people and go there to discuss wine with them.

I started with #3 and found a liquor store near where I work. The man there, Russ, was knowledgeable and helpful. He suggested that I start with a light white wine. He suggested Ken Forrester Stellenbosch Sauvignon Blanc, so I bought a bottle.

The wine's description: "full, complex, ripe tropical fruits, crisp, dry finish."
The smell: sharp, a little woody

The taste: full, dry, a tangy aftertaste that's probably some kind of fruit, but I can't identify it. I asked for something crisp, and I guess this would qualify.

Opinion: It's okay, but I doubt I'd seek it out in the future.

It's nearly six feet tall and smells like a rotting corpse, and it's blooming in Leiden University's Botanical garden. It's the first time the plant has bloomed since it was planted 11 years ago. The plant smells of rotting flesh in order to attract the beetles that will pollinate it.

Venice's first female gondolier

One for the ladies: the first woman ever to pass Venice's rigorous gondolier test has been approved for a license. Giorgia Boscolo is the daughter of a gondolier and has loved the flat-bottom boats since childhood. She's now licensed as a trainee.
