chic Spring finds Under $200

I am a broken record about this, but if you are new here, I have a “great style under $200” section on my ShopMy page that I update multiple times a week, if not every day! Both Carly and I spend quite a bit of time tracking down pieces at this price point that feel well-made, special, and fun.

I aim to share a roundup like this every two weeks (the last installment is right here) as there are so many great items out there that won’t break the bank. Right now, a few personal favorites are . . .

This was another great month of reading. I finished my friend Chassity’s book, Pink Sand Summer and really loved it. I read more non-fiction than usual. I finally tackled Project Hail Mary (very excited for the film!). Plus, some really good thrillers (omg, the new Sarah Pekkanen was my personal favorite — well worth pre-ordering!).

Thrillers

The Women in White, by Sarah Pekkanen (out 8/4)

I am a huge fan of Sarah Pekkanen; I have read all of her books and love them all! This one was a little bit of a departure for her as it has an alternate timeline (it’s partially set in the 1960s), and I loved it! In 1964, a group of four women (who became best friends) became the subjects of a series of parapsychology experiments at the local university. The experiments are conducted by a visionary scientist who believes he’s on the precipice of a historic breakthrough. In the same year, these women each vanish, and the program is shut down. Meanwhile in modern day, Riley Bell is newly divorced and looking for a fresh start. She accepts a caretaker job for Betty, an elderly widow. Betty seems pretty self-sufficient. While confined to a wheelchair, she can do most things on her own. That said, she seems to be stuck in the sixties. There’s no internet or television, no microwave, no cell phones . . . no modern technology whatsoever. Betty is isolated and lonely. Riley becomes determined to help her figure out the truth about her missing friends. As she does this, old secrets come out, and Riley finds herself at the center of a decades-old mystery. I couldn’t put this down. I thought it was really clever and smart (and as with all of Pekkanen’s books, super fun to read!).  Overall Score A // Order on Bookshop or Amazon

A Good Person, by Kirsten King

When Olivia Muenter blurbed this, she called it “A love letter to Amy Dunne of Gone Girl,” which a) got me to buy it and b) is completely accurate. This is the sort of book that will keep you up all night (and I really don’t recommend reading it before bed; I couldn’t sleep — the ending was wild!). I mean this as a compliment, of course: dark and twisty is my favorite. I would just recommend starting it earlier in the day because you won’t be able to stop reading. Lillian is, to be clear, very much not a good person. She’s living in Boston and hooking up with Henry, her situationship, who she is certain will eventually fall in love with her. When Henry does not fall in love with her and instead breaks up with her, Lillian loses her mind a little bit. She decides to exact revenge upon him by casting a hex. She expects the hex to ruin his life or maybe cause him to come groveling back. Instead, she wakes up to the news that Henry has been found dead. Did Lillian’s hex work? When Lillian finds herself a prime suspect in his murder case, her life is thrown into a dangerous tailspin. This is dark and funny and very toxic (in the best way). I loved it! The Ending Writes Itself, by Evelyn Clarke

This is a twisty whodunnit with Agatha Christie vibes. Six authors across very different genres are invited to spend a weekend in Arthur Fletch’s castle on a private island. Fletch is one of the world’s best-selling novelists. When they arrive, they sign an NDA and learn an explosive secret: Fletch is dead, and there is a contest amongst them to finish his final book. The winner will receive a contract with his prestigious agent, as well as a million dollars. (This is huge, potentially career-changing news for this group of authors as each of them are struggling in some way.) The catch? Their devices have been taken away; they have to finish it on a typewriter, and they have just 72 hours to write their perfect ending. From there, the cozy writing retreat quickly escalates to a murder mystery. I liked this a lot, but it was not a love for me, simply because locked-room murder mysteries are generally not my favorite. But it’s good, definitely worth reading, especially if you are more into mysteries than thrillers! Also, kinda cool: Evelyn Clarke is the pseudonym for authors V.E. Schwab and Cat Clarke. Romance

Pink Sand Summer, by Chassity Evans (out 5/12)

My friend Chassity wrote a book, and it is so wonderful. Truly, the perfect beach read that I think everyone will love (even if you are like me and romance is not always your first choice). It’s heartfelt, cozy, and a joy to read. What I loved most about it was how transportive her writing was. Having visited Harbour Island a few times, it felt like I was right back there again. Bring it somewhere warm, park yourself in the sunshine, and give yourself a few hours to relax and get immersed in Lucy, Jack, and Noah’s world. Lucy (an artist, based in Charleston) has inherited her grandmother’s beloved island house on Harbour Island. She’ll spend the summer on the island, getting the house in order and figuring out what comes next. Upon returning to the island, she finds herself face-to-face with the man she once thought was the love of her life but broke her heart (Jack), and a handsome new love interest (songwriter Noah). Summer on Harbour Island is a blur of parties and dinners. Lucy is invited to be part of a prestigious art show at a photographer’s home (he feels very Slim Aarons adjacent). And she finds herself torn between these two men. Can she trust Jack again? Should she take a chance on someone new? Overall Score A+ // Order on Bookshop or Amazon

Science Fiction

Project Hail Mary, by Andy Weir

Something I have learned about myself is that I don’t really like books about space. They are, I think, just below books about war. Of course, there are exceptions (Atmosphere!), but for whatever reason, I find space to be super stressful and — if I’m being totally honest, a little bit tedious. Also, so much science speak. So, to be totally honest, a lot of this book was a slog for me. It’s very long and there’s a lot of scientific language (Andy Weir is honestly a genius with what he created here). I ultimately ended up loving it because the plot took a turn and something happened that I wasn’t prepared for (I went in knowing very very little!). I am really happy that I slogged through because I loved that twist, and I adored the ending (it made me emotional, which I didn’t see happening). My advice, if you are like me and want to read the book, is to stick with it, it’s completely worth it!!! Now, I can’t wait to see the film. Overall Score A- // Order on Bookshop or Amazon

Non-fiction

The Company I Keep, by Leonard Lauder

I read this as background research for my book (a big part will be around a “family business” similar to Estée Lauder) but would recommend it to absolutely anyone. It’s an incredible look at how Estée and her two sons built The Estée Lauder Companies. From starting a brand during the war and taking it from the family kitchen to department stores, to building Clinique, Origins, Prescriptives, and more . . . it’s fascinating. We learn about the Revlon Wars (Charles Revson seems like such a villain; I am dying to read up on everything related to him next!). It gave me great material for the book, but something I forgot about was Lauder’s incredible art collection and his work for The Whitney Museum. I couldn’t get enough! He seems like he was an incredible person and led such an interesting life. I could not get enough and genuinely think that anyone and everyone will love this book. Besides all of the great stories, there is some fantastic leadership (and life!) advice. I highly (highly!) recommend it. Overall Score A+ // Order on Bookshop or Amazon

Extra Sauce, by Zahra Tangorra

It is rare for me to pick up a memoir by someone I’m not familiar with, but I’d heard fantastic things about this one. Also, I am obsessed with food writing (and miss my old life in New York), so it felt like the appropriate thing to read when I got home from my trip. I am so happy I picked it up, because the writing is so incredibly good that I felt absolutely transported into Tangorra’s world (and also very hungry). The book opens with a near-death experience: Tangorra is on a tour bus. The driver falls asleep at the wheel. The bus goes off of the cliff. Miraculously, she survives . . . and with the money from a settlement, opens up the cult-favorite Brooklyn restaurant, Brucie. She takes us through the Brucie years (and needing to close it and file for bankruptcy). The way she writes about food is extraordinary. But also, family and romantic love. The chapters about her father (and cooking his last meal) had me in tears. And as an added bonus, the book is filled with her recipes (old family ones, plus Brucie favorites). I want to make them all! I keep saying this, but it would be the perfect book club/cookbook club hybrid. This is an absolute must for all of the food lovers! Start With Yourself, by Emma Grede

I absolutely loved this book, and all of the stories within it. I found it to be both realistic and inspirational. Emma Grede has built an empire, and this is her no B.S. story of how she got to where she is today, packed with stories and inspiration. There has been a lot of coverage in the media that have been pretty critical of Grede and some of her takes. Those takes feel a little sexist to me, and also, out of context. I don’t agree with all of her advice, but I’m also not trying to build a billion-dollar brand. (That sounds stressful to me!) Whether you aspire to build an empire or just grow your own small business, I think there are so many incredible takeaways. And so few women are honest about what it really takes to succeed at that level: she’s refreshingly candid. As with anything, you can take and leave some parts to apply it to your own goals and lifestyle, but wow — I certainly took a lot away from it. And I loved learning more about her early childhood (from the daughter of a single mother who didn’t grow up with much to becoming one of America’s richest self-made women). Each chapter breaks down an “old thought” (stale thinking, outdated ideas) into a “new thought” (a reframe, modern way of thinking). If you’ve ever felt like a bystander in your own life, this is for you. I recommend listening to it as she has a great accent and it feels like she’s speaking directly to you, giving you advice. Every Wednesday, I’ll bring you a list of ten things that I think you should know about. This is my favorite part of my job, to be honest. Finding and sharing cool stuff that you hopefully haven’t seen elsewhere. I often stumble across something interesting and share it on Instagram, but it has no real home. Maybe it’s a new launch, a really great podcast episode . . . maybe it’s an independent designer, a sale worth noting, or a must-have shopping find. It will be a different mix every week. 1. Credo started their friends-and-family sale. 20% off of everything. No code or minimum. Ends 5/3. The two things I love that I can only get at Credo are my favorite lash serum and these cream eyeshadows (linen and rosewood are my jam). Here are the rest of my favorites!
2. It has been a minute since I’ve looked at Ban.Do (my elder millennial brain does miss the brand), but I gasped when I saw these colorful highball glasses. Honorable mention: this fun carafe and this mesh tote. Is this a comeback?
3. Speaking of comebacks, Chan Luu. I was fanatical about this brand in 2010. My first blog post was actually about one of their leather wrap bracelets. Their clothing has been incredible. I ordered a few pieces from Moda that sold out (I’ll show you when they get here) but I’m also eyeing this feather top and this collarless dupioni duster coat.
4. I talked about Bangla Begum in last week’s list, but omg. How cool are these enamel letter necklaces? A bit obsessed.
5. If you are in New York, The Adventure of Domenico Gnoli is on display at Lévy Gorvy Dayan through the end of May. Looks like a must to me.
6. Look at these pretty enamel utensils.
7. Herbert Levine is a footwear brand I’ve been loving. You may remember the black suede heeled mules I wore all winter. Look at these flat mules.
8. Ooh: Maryam Nassir Zadeh has begun posting new collection pieces on the brand’s Instagram, a first since the NYC store shut down. I’ll be stalking.

The Correct Order to Apply Skincare Products

One of the questions I get asked the most is what skincare product to apply, when!? With so many products out there (serum! toner! essence! oils!) layering your skincare products can feel really overwhelming. It doesn’t have to be though, I promise. The general rule is to layer your products from thin to thick; and to apply the products with the highest percentage of active ingredients first so that they are absorbed first. And of course, SPF is the last step. Makeup goes on after SPF!

I’m not an expert or board certified dermatologist (lol), but I have talked to a lot of experts about this, and this is what I have been told.

I’ve talked about product order before in my bedtime skincare routine but today I wanted to break things down in full. I think the biggest “controversial” part of my routine (if skincare routines can be controversial, ha ha) is whether to apply face oil before or after moisturizer. I’ve been taught that facial oil should always be the last step, but if you want to apply it before your moisturizer, do that. No one is stopping you! I say this often, and I’ll say it again: if something works for you, there’s no need to fix it just because of “rules.”

I’ve seen it in my DM’s and reader emails, everyone stresses out about doing things the wrong way. You’re not going to ruin your skin because you didn’t follow the recommended product order. The only thing that is truly bad for your skin is using too many actives at night (or skipping SPF during the day). Listen to your skin, experiment to see what works, don’t stress! Pampering should be fun… applying things in a slightly “wrong” order is not going to ruin your life.

I will also caveat that you might not need all of these steps. If you have sensitive skin or oily skin for example, you’re probably not going to want to do all of these serums and oils. I have dry skin, so share what works best for me. My biggest concerns are hydration, dullness, and anti-aging… tackling those fine lines and wrinkles!

Cleanse and exfoliate:

Obviously this is the first step. But I included it because if you are doing a double cleanse (more on that here), you should use the creamy/oil cleanser first. I love a good cleansing oil or balm… the one I use transforms washing my face into a luxurious spa treatment.

Cleansing Balm Recs: Rhode’s pineapple refresh is my top pick here, simply because it also contains fruit extracts to exfoliate. Farmacy is a close second. I love the Farmacy as it takes off all of my makeup and leaves my skin feeling super clean. Cleansing balms are frequently applied to dry skin and the point is to use that rich cleanser to get your makeup off. You can read more cleansing balms in this post: “How to Use Cleansing Balm.“

Cleansing Oil Recs: You can also use a cleansing oil. My favorite cleansing oil is this one from Dieux, but I also love the Tata Harper cleansing oil. The Tata is very fancy, it smells heavenly, it’s like a mini home spa experience.

As a second step, you’d use a gel cleanser afterward (this one is my favorite) to get your skin extra clean.

If you are doing a face scrub, that’s the last part of your cleansing process. This is my favorite scrub! It’s really effective, to the point where I’d compare it to gentle microdermabrasion.. Note: if you do a scrub, don’t do retinol, acid, etc. after. Keep it simple!

Toner:

For the longest time, I didn’t think toner was necessary, but have changed my position. Toner should be the last step of your cleansing routine. If you use a toner, this is where you do it. Pat skin dry and apply all over with a cotton pad. This toner is my personal favorite. It’s gentle and hydrating but contains acides to exfoliate. I wrote more about toners and why you need one in this post “Do You Really Need Toner?” I also really like P50.

Essence

The next step is your essence. Whereas toner is the last step of cleansing, essence is the first step of skincare. (If you use it – you can read about my love of SK-II in this post.) I apply my essence (Right now my favorite essence is actually Rhode’s glazing milk – it’s super hydrating and makes you GLOW. If I do the Biossance toner or P50, I like a really hydrating essence afterward.

*A note about: P50 is very very active and I consider it an acid, not an essence. I recommend only using at night, and if you do use it before bed don’t use other actives (retinol, Vit C, etc). Just moisturize. You could do a gentle serum like hyaluronic acid (this is my current favorite HA serum – it’s also wildly affordable!), but you don’t want to do much else.

Special Moisturizers

If you use an eye cream or a neck cream, this is when I like to apply these. Caroline Hirons has drilled it into my head (read her book, it’s amazing!) that eye cream goes on before everything else. The eye area is so delicate; you want to just pat it on very gently. I do a little extra patting around my crows feet and fine lines. These days, I haven’t been using an eye cream consistently at night. I just use my regular old moisturizer. Sometimes I will use this one from U Beauty. In the morning, I always use this Natura Bisse eye cream — it’s tinted and doubles as concealer.

For neck cream, nothing is better than this one from U Beauty. It is truly the best in every single way. The results are temporary, but it really does lift the jawline and help fade neck wrinkles.

Serum or Actives.

Serum is the next step. The way you want to think about your product order is to apply the ingredients with the highest concentration of active ingredients first, so they’re closest to the skin and absorbed first. Essence is packed with actives, as is serum. But because essence is less viscous (its consistency is like water), you want to apply that first. I use a bunch of different serums/actives. Below is a loose guide to my favs and how often I use them.

Also: this is my favorite hydrating serum. You can use it before any of these (or Vitamin C serum in the morning). It delivers a long-lasting shot of lasting hydration… and it has a nice little plumping effect too!

• Vitamin C Serum, every morning. I’m Skinceuticals ride or die.
• At night:
  • Retinol – 2-3x a week. I have changed my tune and now use a prescription retinol from my derm. I cannot believe I used to pay so much money for expensive retinols. This is more gentle than my Rx retinol, sometimes I will use that a couple nights a week. But really, it’s all about the retinol.
  • Acid – 2x a week. Still loving the Biossance lactic acid or U Beauty’s Resurfacing Compound.
• (On the off nights I just do moisturizer and skip serums)

Moisturizer 

Obviously Bader is king (for me) and yes, use it over my serums!

My second to last step is always my moisturizer. I love a thick, velvety moisturizer. If you can’t swing Bader, the INNBeauty Extreme Cream is a near dupe, for only $50. I also really love the U Beauty Super Hydrator.

Oil or SPF

The last step in your routine should be face oil (at night) or SPF (day).

Oil is what seals it all in! I like to let everything I’ve applied sink in for a minute or two while I brush my teeth, and then gently pat on my oils. I love to warm my facial oil up in my palms and then push it into my skin. For me, oils are saved for nighttime as after serum AND moisturizer I’m already pretty shiny, but I really like to lock in all that moisture. My favorite is either the Biossance Rose Oil or Everyday Oil and sometimes if I am feeling really extra I will do Vintner’s Daughter over Dr. Bader. Yes, that’s one very expensive skincare routine but it’s an incredible combo.

For SPF, I will always love Supergoop’s Unseen Sunscreen! It is the best. I love it so much as sunscreen can bug me a bit (so many formulas feel very heavy and make my skin feel claustrophic?) but this is matte and feels like nothing. Highly recommend. I haven’t tried it but I have heard that Trader Joe’s has a great dupe. I have also become a big fan of this tinted SPF from SkinBetter. It’s expensive but worth it as it’s really strong and also has a nice tint. And if I have any redness, this one cancels that out.

Today, we’re styling these fun lime green Tecovas sunglasses, this classic J.Crew long sleeve, and my very beloved Freda Salvador cobalt flats. PS – You can see last week’s post here.

I love the idea of a really neutral outfit with just a few key pops of lime green: this lacy camisole, and of course the sunglasses that you guys keep buying.

First of all, this J.Crew long-sleeve is the very best. I recommend sizing up (I got the M and the L and prefer the L as it’s a little slouchier and the shoulder has a nice drape). Keep things really simple with classic denim shorts (my favorite) and a polished belt, and then have some fun with these lilac loafers and matching socks!

This month’s wish list is a nice little mix across books, home, and fashion . . . with some super cool, new-to-me brands peppered in.

What’s on my April wish list

I always say that making these lists is (almost!) as much fun as shopping. I have been shopping a lot lately and really do need to rein it in. There is so much great newness in stores right now, and I unfortunately want all of it. Rohé’s newest collection is not included in the graphics, but oh my, it’s excellent. They are a brand that always fits me really well (someone said that they’re more tall girl friendly, which makes sense, nothing is ever too short). This white blouse is probably one of my most-worn pieces, so I bought it in brown, along with the matching shorts.

I’m still dreaming about this ring (especially after seeing it in person in New York), and the same goes for this crazy beaded bag. And this is going to be my next audiobook listen.

Every Wednesday, I’ll bring you a list of ten things that I think you should know about. I’m excited for this. I often stumble across something interesting and will share it to Instagram, but it has no real place to live. Maybe it’s a new launch, a really great podcast episode . . . maybe it’s an independent designer or a must-have shopping find. It will be a different mix every week. You can read the first one here.

1. Liz Lidgett’s new book, Art For Everyone, came out yesterday. I am such a fan of hers and have followed her (and shopped at her gallery) for years. I love her work and her mission to make art feel accessible. It can feel like you need a fancy degree to understand it, but you really don’t.
2. A really cool French jewelry brand to know, Bangla Begum. Every piece is made in limited quantities in France by highly skilled artisans. I got these earrings and adore them. The color combination is beautiful, and they feel really different and special.
3. These jewelry boxes! OMG. Carly found them, and I ordered the chartreuse immediately. Mine took a little while to arrive, but it was worth it. So pretty—it would make a great Mother’s Day gift.
4. I am not allowed to buy any more chartreuse bags (I have a problem with this), but were that not the case, I’d be all over this gorgeous satin pillow bag from Rachel Comey. For something more practical, this larger pillow tote in black Napa leather would make a hell of a work bag.
5. When I was in New York, Jessie Randall mentioned taking a memoir-writing class with Lizzie Simon (Belle Burden’s writing coach—Belle took it three times!). I signed up immediately. The spring session kicks off next week. I can’t wait!
6. A beautiful new-to-me Spanish footwear brand to obsess over. These ballet flats have a Phoebe Philo vibe, and I love these (far less practical) lace floral ballerina heels.
7. I’m never not looking at vintage cocktail rings; this one is insane.
8. These are the most insanely beautiful silk flower arrangements, wow. I want to fill my house with them. (Another good Mother’s Day gift idea!)
9. A few A+ home finds: dreamy marbled napkins, the cutest little bud vase, these salt & pepper shakers, and the most over-the-top coasters (they feel like fine jewelry).
10. And of course, don’t forget the J.Crew friends & family sale—30% off sitewide. I went through their site in excruciating detail, and this is my edit.
