Re-Drafting the Brian Flores Era Miami Dolphins (2020 NFL Draft)

What does The Miami Dolphins team look like in hindsight?

The Brian Flores Era is over in Miami. A mixed bag of results on the field, in the front office and in the draft room. Coach Flo hit some homeruns alongside Chris Grier in each of these areas, and whiffed completely in others. From mid-round offensive line gems to late round linebackers, and even a superstar quarterback or two to choose from, The Miami Dolphins under Brian Flores could have easily (without any additional trades or transactions) fielded one of the most talented young teams in modern football history with a few simple draft day changes in each year.

Let’s take a look at at what could have been the draft for The Miami Dolphins under Brian Flores.

The 2020 Miami Dolphins Draft

Round 1; Pick 5: Tua Tagovailoa, Quarterback, Alabama

Tank For Tua. That was the mantra for most Miami Dolphins during the re-building first year of Brian Flores in 2019. Trading away key starters like Laremy Tunsil and Minkah Fitzpatrick all but confirmed this strategy in the hearts and minds of fans, NFL pundits and analysts everywhere. Except, two things happened along the way…

Tua got badly hurt in college, and The Dolphins won 5 games, dropping them to fifth overall in the draft. Would Tua fall to Miami at five? Would they have to trade up to get him? OR even worse…did they still even want Tua after his hip went full Bo Jackson on him?

Turns out they did still want Tua, and took the former National Championship winning Quarterback at fifth overall. And everyone lived happily ever after…for about three minutes. In the fourth minute, the second guessers, doubters and naysayers took up sides against Tua supporters (affectionately known as “TuAnon”) and the Miami Dol-Fan Neverending Civil War started it’s next chapter.

Tua hasn’t been bad as the starting QB for Miami. He hasn’t been great, either. He is 13-8 as the starter, but has found himself benched twice in his rookie year, openly admitted to not knowing the entire playbook as a rookie and found himself injured again with rib, thumb and other injuries in year two. And if that wasn’t enough, his relationship with Brian Flores was driven hard into into the ground than he was against The Bills this season and fractured worse than his ribs.

The controversial QB has amassed 4,467 yards passing, 27 TDs and a 66.2% completion percentage in his two years in the NFL. He has also rushed for 6 additional touchdowns and had a QB Rating of 90 in 2021. All of this while playing behind one of the worst offensive lines in league history, statistically speaking. But Tua has also thrown 15 interceptions, been sacked 40 times and has had trouble locating receivers on deep passes, often settling for check downs to his nearer teammates, or making poor decisions while flushed out of the pocket. His performance has been up and down and anything but consistent. Perhaps the most alarming fact is that The Dolphins, and their fans, remain divided on whether or not Tua is a franchise QB or not. Not a great discussion to be having for what was supposed to be the face of the franchise back when he was drafted in 2020.

Herbert looking for ANOTHER TD pass

Re-Draft: Justin Herbert, Quarterback, Oregon (originally drafted by Los Angeles Chargers at pick number 6)

Much like this draft, hindsight is 2020. Justin Herbert has had a rocket start to his career as the starting QB for the Los Angeles Chargers. Despite his face looking like he is in a constant state of puberty, the two year vet has been quite manly on the field of play. In the same timeframe as Tua’s above, Herbert has thrown for over twice as many yards (9,350), two and a half more touchdown passes (69…nice!) and a QB Rating over over 97. Additionally, he has rushed for more yardage and more touchdowns than Tua, to boot.

About the only thing Tua has Justin beat on, is posting a winning record as a starting QB. Despite all of his statistical success, Justin Herbert is only 15-17 since coming into the league. That aside, I am not sure there is much discussion as to who has been a better quarterback in the NFL so far in their respective careers.

Round 1; Pick 18: Austin Jackson, Offensive Tackle, USC

The Miami Dolphins have had some wet farts for draft picks in their day, but Austin Jackson at #18 overall may be full blown diarrhea, at this point. After drafting their supposed franchise quarterback at #5 overall earlier in the night, The Dolphins tried to protect that investment with Mr. Jackson. It hasn’t gone well. In less than a year, Austin Jackson has gone from being a first round draft pick, to losing his job (TWICE!) and forced to move to left guard in an effort to mitigate is horri-bad play until they can figure out what to do with him this offseason.

Or, to put it another way…

…Austin Jackson sucks. A lot.

Re-Draft: Justin Jefferson, Wide Receiver, LSU (originally drafted by Minnesota Vikings at pick number 22)

If only Miami had seen you, Justin…

Well isn’t this just a swift kick in the football bag, eh? Four picks after Miami decided to let Austin Jackson steal money from them, an actual bona fide star wide receiver was chosen by Minnesota. Jefferson has been nothing short of amazing since entering the league. 196 catches for over 3,000 yards and 17 touchdowns in two years (and this was with Kirk freaking Cousins throwing him the ball!). He has made the Pro Bowl in each of his first two seasons and has solidified himself as a top 1 receiver in the entire league. And the worst part? Miami NEEDED wide receiver help in 2020. It was a pretty glaring hole that was only half-assed addressed in free agency prior to draft day. Combining the Justins together with their first two picks would have given The Dolphins an extremely formidable rookie duo to build upon immediately. But wait, there’s more…

Round 1; Pick 30: Noah Igbinoghene, Cornerback, Auburn

The less said about this travesty of a pick, the better. Most Dolphins fans are pissed off that they spent considerable amount of time learning how to pronounce this guy’s name, only to see it show up on their television screens constantly as he tried to chase down the receivers who burnt him badly the few times he did play. Honestly, this pick was questionable at best and downright horrible in reality. Igbo’s draft grade coming into the 2020 draft was as low as a fifth rounder on some boards, yet somehow Miami felt compelled to make him a first rounder with their third and final pick of the first round.

Not only has Noah been a complete and utter bust, he also had the added bonus of pissing off our star cornerback, Xavien Howard, which may have helped lead to The Miami Dolphins having to give X some “we’re sorry money” before the 2021 season to make up for it. Noah has been outplayed by street free agents like Nik Needham and at this point, I would be surprised if he is still employed as an NFL player beyond his rookie contract.

He makes Austin Jackson look like Richmond Webb, in comparison.

Re-Draft: Tee Higgins, Wide Receiver, Clemson (originally draft by Cincinnati Bengals at pick number 33)

Could have been Tee Dee Higgins for Miami

Feeling depressed yet, Dolphins fans? You should. Because your favorite team not only had the ability to add Justin Jefferson to a shallow wide receivers room, but could have bolstered it even further with Tee Higgins. The standout wide receiver from Clemson has nabbed 141 receptions for 2,000 yards and 12 TDs over the course of his two year career. This is the equivalent to what Noah Igbinoghene gave up to the Jacksonville Jaguars receivers in London this past year. Higgins has become a staple of the Bengals offense that catapulted them to the top of the AFC North and winning their first playoff game in three decades.

If only we had a different Noah that would have granted us the gift of two wide receivers coming on to the Miami Dolphins Boat in 2020. Sigh…

Round 2; Pick 39: Robert Hunt, Offensive Linemen, Louisiana

Robert Hunt has been a quality linemen for the Miami Dolphins since he was drafted in the second round of the 2020 draft. In fact, you can make a strong case that he has been Miami’s BEST linemen in that spent. You won’t get any argument from me on that. The talented big man from Louisiana has been the lone bright spot in a unit that has been hilariously bad. And speaking of hilarious, how funny was it to see Big Rob try to shoot his shot against Baltimore and end up inverted as he crossed the goal line? Sadly, the touchdown didn’t count, but the effort sure did. He has endeared himself to Dol-fans everywhere with that play. But alas, when your an offensive linemen and best known for a play that was ultimately just a fancy penalty, it tells you all you need to know about the state of your offensive line.

Re-Draft: Jonathan Taylor, Running Back, Wisconsin (originally drafted by Indianapolis Colts at pick number 41)

What even is a running back?

The fact that Miami failed to address their painfully obvious hole at the running back position with this pick, is enough to make even the most hardened Dolphins fan break down into tears and sob in the corner of their room. It seemed SO obvious that this was the pick for Miami here, yet…it wasn’t. And no one really knows why, either. JT was highly regarding coming out of college, went to a school The Dolphins were intimately familiar with (they drafted two of his teammates in the 2019 draft) and was a perfect blend of size, speed and strength.

Taylor led the league in rushing in 2021 with over 1,800 yards rushing and 18 TDs. I am no math major but that means he scored more than a touchdown per game and averaged more than 100 yards on the ground per. Not to mention another 300 yards receiving and a couple of TDs and you have yourself a superstar tailback with over 2,000 yards from scrimmage and 20 damn touchdowns in one season.

But Miami had signed Jordan Howard who rushed for 33 yards on 28 carries so, you know, ALMOST the same exact thing…

Round 2; Pick 56: Raekwon Davis, Defensive Tackle, Alabama

If nothing else, The Miami Dolphins showed they could get great defensive linemen during the Brian Flores era. Trades, free agents and of course, draft picks, have all been pretty damn successful for The Dolphins during this span. Raekwon Davis is further evidence of that. The 6’7″ mountain of a man was voted to the 2020 All-Rookie team and had made his presence felt for this vaunted Dolphins defense. While he doesn’t get the press of his fellow DT, Christian Wilkins, Davis often does the dirty work of gobbling up linemen so that his teammates can get the glory. A rock solid pick for Miami in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Re-Draft: SAME

Round 3; Pick 70: Brandon Jones, Safety, Texas

It really felt like The Dolphins hit their stride in the 2020 draft midway through the 2nd round. Raekwon Davis followed by Brandon Jones? Yes please. The second year safety has come into his own as a rock solid defender for The Miami Dolphins in 2021, amassing 79 tackles on the season, an interception, five sacks and 10 additional QB hits. His ability to come up to the line and blitz off the edge helped key a defense that was near the top of the league in QB sacks, hits and pressures. The Dolphins may have missed completely in the first round of this draft, but they hit some solid single and doubles in the middle rounds.

Re-Draft: SAME

4th Round; Pick 117: Solomon Kindley, Offensive Linemen, Georgia

The fourth round pick has a bit of an incomplete grade, at this point. On one hand, he has a kick ass name. He was either going to be a road grading offensive linemen in the NFL, or a Batman villain. He also did not allow a sack in 2021 and was only flagged for a penalty once. But then again, he only played about three games worth of snaps on the season and that should be somewhat concerning considering he wasn’t injured and the rest of the Dolphins offensive line was garbage. He played much more in 2020 as a rookie and while he gave up more snaps and more penalties, he seemed to be a guy Miami was excited about building with.

So why didn’t that happen? Why wasn’t he able to crack this putrid starting lineup? Was it coaching? Or was he only able to contribute in spot situations before he would get exposed? He is a 6’6″ 315 pound mystery, at this point.

Re-Draft: DJ Wonnum, Linebacker, South Carolina (originally drafted by Minnesota Vikings with pick number 117)

The edge rushing specialist had himself a pretty decent season for The Vikings in 2021. He started 14 games, had 47 tackles, eight sacks and 15 QB hits. Miami seems to have turned a corner in the pass rushing department, but mainly due to creative and timely blitz packages, as well as finally hitting on a draft pick in 2021. Wonnum would have given Miami another weapon in their pack to unleash on opposing offenses.

5th Round; Pick 154: Jason Strowbridge, Defensive End, North Carolina

I remember being way more excited about this pick than I probably should have been. As I referenced in the 2019 re-draft article, The Miami Dolphins have had a long history of drafting defensive gems in the fifth round. So it seemed like a no brainer that Strowbridge would continue that lineage.

He did not.

In fact, he is out of the league less than two years later.

Oops.

Re-Draft: Bryce Hall, Cornerback, Virginia (originally drafted by New York Jets with pick number 158)

Right player. Wrong Uniform

You hate to admit it, but The Jets got themselves a steal with Bryce Hall in the fifth round. While Miami wasted a first round pick on Noah Igbinoghene, they could have had an ACTUAL starting cornerback in this draft here in the fifth round with Bryce Hall. Had they made this one change, they may have actually beaten The Jaguars in London this year and made the playoffs instead of missing out again, firing their coach, and forcing me to write close to 3,000 words about their clusterfuck of a 2020 draft.

Thanks a lot, Miami.

5th Round; Pick 164: Curtis Weaver, Defensive End, Boise State

Full disclosure, this was m favorite value pick in this draft back when it happened. I even stated as such on Episode 160 of the podcast. But despite my glowing endorsement of Curtis Weaver, he didn’t even play on snap for The Miami Dolphins as we was “injured” and was released from his contract. He ended up signing with The Cleveland Browns where I pronounced that Miami would regret their decision to let him go. Since then, Curtis Weaver has played in exactly one game for The Browns and is barely in the league, which goes to show you that drafting players in this league is way easier in hindsight.

Re-Draft: Michael Onwenu, Offensive Guard, Michigan (originally drafted by New England Patriots with pick number 182)

Like a lot of unheralded linemen that make their way to New England, Michael Onwenu has graded out to be pretty decent guard for The Patriots. PFF has him rated at 87 overall in 2021, which is an improvement from 84.1 his rookie season. While not a full time starter for Bill Belichick, the two years vet has played quite a bit in his offense and would be a vast improvement to a Miami Dolphins line that currently hands out QB pressures like they were candy on Halloween.

6th Round; Pick 185, Blake Ferguson, Long Snapper, LSU

Well…there isn’t much to say about Blake Ferguson other than he seems to be pretty decent and throwing the ball pretty far and accurately between his legs. If you have to draft a Long Snapper, the sixth round seems like the right time to do it. Blake’s brother Reid also bends over and shoots balls through his legs as the starting LS for The Buffalo Bills. Reid might be a better Long Snapper, but Blake has better hair.

In all seriousness, the less you have to talk about your long snapping situation, the better off you are. Blake has been rock solid on the field, and a fun follow on Twitter.

Re-Draft: SAME

7th Round; Pick 246, Malcom Perry, RB/QB/WR, Navy

Perry is/was an interesting case study because while he was with The Dolphins, he never seemed to get a ton of playing time despite being an intriguing gadget player that could play in a variety of offensive skill positions. His biggest claim to fame seemed to be that Bill Belichick wanted to draft him but Miami beat The Patriots Coach to the punch, thus pissing off Lord Vader In A Hoodie. Despite the player swipe by Miami, Perry ended up in New England anyway in 2021, much to the chagrin of many Dol-fans who labeled him a traitorous traitor, despite Miami having not lost since Malcolm Perry went to The Dark Side. In fact, his only real success came when he was a member of The Dolphins and caught a touchdown pass against The Bills from fellow draft mate, Tua Tagovailoa.

Re-Draft: SAME (honestly everyone drafted after him was garbage)

In Conclusion

Wowzers. This draft is discussed frequently because of the Tua/Herbert debate. Occasionally people will grumble when the remember that Jonathan Taylor was available for Miami to grab in the second round, as well. But when you look at the glaring oversights of Justin Jefferson and Tee Higgins as well, you have to develop instant diarrhea as a Dolphins fans. This franchise had the ability to draft Justin Herbert, Justin Jefferson, Tee Higgins and Jonathan Taylor on four consecutive picks and somehow managed to miss each time. And these were at positions of need, too!

This is the type of draft that ultimately will get people fired. And while it wasn’t completely devoid of talent, the additions of Raekwon Davis, Brandon Jones and Blake Ferguson don’t make up for the deficit at the top of The Dolphins draft in 2020. This blunder will go down as one of the biggest failures in team history, when it is all said and done. I am honestly shocked at how poorly this draft went for Miami.

In the next piece, I will break down the immediate result from the 2021 NFL Draft. As bad as the 2020 draft was, The Dolphins seemingly did the exact opposite just a year later. They may end up turning this draft frown upside down.

The boys take some time to look at the REST of The AFC East on this episode of Welcome To Perfectville. The Bills, Patriots and Jets each had various levels of success and failure in 2020 and their offseason approaches reflect that. The Patriots went on a spending spree, The Bills added talent to surround their young QB and The Jets…well…we aren’t sure what they are doing.

That being said, we still take the time to discuss each team’s current state, grade their offseason (so far) and where they should go in the upcoming NFL Draft.

Episode 189: A Little Bit of This n’ That

Sam is almost out of his temporary recording location and back into the Perfectville West studio, Chris is still in his Perfectville East studio, and The Dolphins are almost on the clock! The boys review Miami’s free agency plan and how it relates to the aforementioned NFL Draft. Did Miami make enough moves to pass on taking playmakers early? Or are they hiding in plain sight with their free agency moves and showing us exactly what the plan is?

Speaking of the NFL Draft, Miami made a flurry of trades with the 49ers and Eagles. When the dust settled, The Dolphins picked up extra first round draft picks in future years and only moved back three spots. Are they done wheeling and dealing? Or do they stay put and take the best player available on their board once the fifth pick is selected? Sam and Chris bounce these and other scenarios around, including which position groups they are imploring Miami to stay away from at all costs in the first round.

Plus, Miami signed another player. This by itself, isn’t shocking, but the fact that this player is OVER 30 YEARS OLD, is. John Jenkins and his elderly 31 year old body is now part of the team! We don’t know if he will be good or not, but we love the fact that we can pronounce his last name.

Episode 188: Free Agency is Offensive

Free Agency has started! And so has the overreactions from fans. The Miami Dolphins were big spenders in the 2020 free agent class. 2021? Not so much. At least, at first glance, it appears that The Dolphins weren’t terribly aggressive filling holes with the 2021 free agency class. Upon a closer look, however, perhaps Miami got all the groceries they needed form the free agency store, afterall.

Sam and Chris sit down and review all the moves Miami has made since the start of the new year, including some interesting additions to the offensive line. A talented but troubled tackle? Check. A talented but injured center who can’t seem to snap the ball? Check. A restricted free agent linemen with a funny last name? Check.

But enough hanky Pankey. The Dolphins traded for or signed, 12 new players this week. That equates to 22% of their roster. So while it feels like Miami didn’t do a lot, in actuality, they did the following:

-Signed a starting wide receiver

-Signed competent back-up quarterback

-Add a bruising tailback to their RBBC

-Stole a pass rushing defensive tackle from a division rival

-Traded for a starting middle linebacker and of course, most important of all…

-A NEW PUNTER!

Episode 187: The Tight Ends Room

The boys are back in the saddle. Chris has a new gig and Sam has a new kid. And they get to talk about the best positional unit on the offense? Triple score!

The Miami Dolphins have one of the best Tight Ends in football in Mike Gesicki. And his fellow tight ends, Durham Smythe and Adam Shaheen are perfectly cast in their roles. So why would The Dolphins look to change this winning formula at all in 2021?

The short answer is that they probably won’t. But the long answer? Well, that is when it starts to get interesting. Mike Gesicki is a free agent after the 2021 season and it stands to reason that he is going to cost a pretty penny (as well as a few ugly ones). So could Miami hedge their bets a year early and sign a big name free agent? Or would they look to use their draft capitol on a player like Kyle Pitts to pair with Gesicki for a year and use as leverage next offseason?

It sounds crazy, but then again, you are talking about a franchise that just cut their prized free agent signing from last year in Kyle Van Noy and traded for the biggest first year draft bust in modern history in Isaiah Wilson. So crazy is sort of in the team’s DNA. Either way, there is plenty to talk about as we enter The Tight Ends Room.

Episode 184: The Quarterbacks Room

Tua Tagovailoa and Ryan Fitzpatrick led The Miami Dolphins from the quarterback position in 2020. At times, both of them were amazing. At other times, both were maddening. Sam and Chris break down the position t length in this episode. What went right? What went wrong? And how doe they get better in 2021?

Speaking of 2021, there a lot of rumors swirling around the team as to who will be the starting QB. General Manager Chris Grier and Head Coach Brian Flores have both stated that Tua is the guy, but chatter still remains about the team drafting another QB in the first round, or trading for DeShaun Watson. The boys sift through all the static and let you know the best, and most realistic options for The Dolphins in 2021.

And once they figure out the starting QB, they still have to decide on the back up. Ryan Fitzpatrick is a fee agent. Would he come back and accept a full time position as the back up? Does Miami spend a mid-round draft pick on a project Quarterback? Or do they take to the open market to see what, if any, possible veterans make sense to bring to south beach to help solidify The Quarterbacks Room.

As the saying goes, “You Can’t Win ‘Em All”, and The Miami Dolphins proved that this past weekend, falling to the Kansas City Chiefs 33-27. But despite the loss, the team is still hanging on to the last playoff spot in the AFC as we head into week 15. With Miami needing to win out to guarantee their spot in the playoffs, their playoff push essentially starts now, against the hated New England Patriots.

Sam and Chris look back at the hard fought loss to KC and discuss what went wrong, what went right and why they are more encouraged after this loss, than they were with wins over The Jets and Bengals earlier in the season.

The boys also debut a new segment call “Elite Tweet or Delete Tweet?” in which they dig into Dolphins twitter and discuss the most controversial tweets of the past week to determine whether the tweet is elite…or should be deleted. There are some doozies, right out of the gate with this one!

Oh, plus we talk about how much we hate The Patriots and how we hope to piss on the grave of their mediocre season after this Sunday.

But the good news is that once we identify and talk about it, we neve have to talk about it again! And hopefully the team learns from it, and quickly. Because Miami cannot afford to lose to the Jets this season. Not only would it kill our playoff chances, but it would make the team the laughing stock of the league, to lose to the only winless team still left.

So how does Miami rebound and recover to avoid it? Sam and Chris let you know what needs to happen, and what they would like to see from this team for the rest of the year.

Tua Tagovailoa was the headline going into Week 8, but Miami’s defense was the story coming out of it. The rookie survived his first start in the NFL, and even threw his first touchdown pass of his career to DeVante Parker! But the defense stole the show, with tons of pressure on Jared Goff, forced turnovers and even scoring a touchdown of their own. And not to be outdone, even Jakeem FREAKING Grant got on the board with a wicked punt return touchdown against an extremely talented Rams game. Sam and Chris breakdown the entire game, including the “zero pr essure” defense that Coach Flores employed to perfection in Week 8.

Alos on this show, former professional baseball player, former World League player, former NFL player (and Super Bowl playing Tight End) and former XFL player and current host of the BLEAV in Arizona Cardinals Podcast on the BLEAV Podcast Network, Ed Smith joins us in The Town this week! Ed comes from a crazy athletic family. Not only was he a professional athlete, but his brother Irv played in the NFL as well, and his nephew, Irv Smith Jr., plays for The Minnesota Vikings currently.

Ed tells us about his insane story of being a professional athlete in multiple sports, his next athletic feat he is determined to accomplish and who in his family, is the best athlete (hint: it’s him). Ed also is re-releasing his autobiography and also hosts EZ Sports Talk on Radio KDUS, 1060AM. The show is broadcast live every Saturday from 10:00am – noon, hosted by Smith and his partner Jim Marshall.

Former Rams player and co-host (w/Isaac Bruce) of the “Ramblings” podcast on the BLEAV Podcast Network, Marcus “Doc” Holliday joins us in the Town of Perfectville. He lets us know just how bad Aaron Donald is, how great Jalen Ramsey is, and who else on this defense that Tua and Miami need to look out for.

Additionally, Doc tends to reverse jinx Rams players he criticizes on his show, much like Sam does for us, so Sam and Chris try to get Doc to talk some smack about Tua, just to be safe. The Miami Dolphins blank The New York Jets, 24-0 behind a stellar defensive performance throughout the entire game, and a quality offensive performance in the first half. And even though Miami pitched the first shutout in the NFL in 2020, the score fell short of most Dol-fan’s expectations. What went right? What went wrong? And did Miami play down to The Jets? Or did they purposely hold back, knowing that they will see them again later this year? Sam and Chris discuss the game at large, including the debut of Tua Tagovailoa.

Speaking of Tua, it was leaked, and then announced, that the rookie quarterback from Alabama is now the starting quarterback for The Miami Dolphins once they come back from the bye week. The news by itself isn’t a shocker, but the timing and how it was spread across the social media platforms, certainly was. Did Miami drop the ball in handling this important transition? Is it too soon for Tua to start in the league?

And what happens to Ryan Fitzpatrick now? The beloved journeyman quarterback was “heartbroken” by the news and led everyone down an emotional rollercoaster with his press conference discussing it. Despite his short time in Miami, the Harvard Gunslinger has fully engulfed himself to the team and fans. Was this win against The Jets his final start in the NFL? Or will the Magic Man continue playing tricks on the league in the future? The boys discuss what they think will happen with Ryan, and what they hope doesn’t happen this year.

Additionally, former Left Guard Jamie Nails joins Sam and Chris on Welcome To Perfectville this week. The former run blocking behemoth lets us know which New England Patriots defender had to adjust his game when going up against him, what it was like to get his helmet cracked in half mid-play and whose helmet he borrowed to get back into the game. The Miami Dolphins gave Sam an awesome birthday present in week five when they marched into California and spanked the San Francisco 49ers, 43-17. The defending NFC Champions never stood a chance as Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Dolphins offense jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. Bolstered by a ton of sacks on defense, and a couple of interceptions as well, The Dolphins thwarted star tight end, George Kittle all day, forced Jimmy Garappolo to the bench, and improved their season record to 2-3.

And for their efforts (and due to COVID-19), the Miami Dolphins schedule has shifted to include the New York Jets at home in week 6! Yay! Sam Darnold won’t be playing, Le’Veon Bell is no longer on the team and Adam Gase is still their Head Coach. Sam and Chris discuss if any concerns exist for this weekend’s games and if The Jets have any lane that leads to victory or not against our beloved team.

That combined with Ryan Fitzpatrick’s suspect (at best) play against a bad Seattle pass defense and it equaled a dangerous cocktail of losing football.

Sam and Chris the latest loss for their beloved Dolphins, as well as discuss (argue) whether or not it is time to move from the wily veteran presence of Ryan Fitzpatrick, to the upstart youthful exuberance of Tua Tagovailoa. Is week five the right week to make the transition? Or should Miami keep the patience button mashed down and wait for a different opponent to unleash their future QB on?

Episode 169: Apology Letters (SEA vs. MIA)

The Miami Dolphins prove once and for all that beards always win against moustaches with a resounding victory orchestrated by Ryan Fitzpatrick over Gardner Minshew and the Jacksonville Jaguars in week three. Scoring touchdowns on their first three possessions , The Dolphins ran away from the intra-state rivals in the first half of Thursday Night Football, and never looked back.

Afterwards, Ryan let some of his Fitzmagic creep out from under his purple hawaiian shirt on national television and the world is now under his spell. Sam and Chris discuss whether or not Ryan Fitzpatrick is the most loved quarterback in Miami since Dan Marino, and who, if anyone, would be a close second in that category.

Speaking of beloved, Sam is GIDDY about this year’s rookie draft class. From Tua to Austin to Solomon to even Blake F’n Ferguson. Chris Grier and his staff appear to have struck a gold mine with this talented crop of footballers. When it is all said and done, could the 2020 draft class for the Miami Dolphins be the best ever? Only time will tell.

Speaking of time, it is just about time for Sam to make some amends with a certain wide receiver that he has been peppering on this very show for a few weeks now. But given DeVante Parker’s STRONG performance last week (and the week before) while still nursing a hamstring injury, it is time for Sam to write some Apology Letters.

Additionally, Chris and Sam preview the Seattle Seahawks game for week 4. Russell WIlson might be the best quarterback on the planet and he brings his golden arm, glorious hair and infectious smile to south beach on Sunday to face a young, injury-riddled secondary of the Miami Dolphins. That combined with Seattle having the worst pass defense in league history to start this season, lends itself to this game being a good ol’ fashion shoot out. Can Miami overcome the odds and shock the world? Or will Seattle prove to be too much too soon for this young, inexperienced Dolphins defense?

So what went right? What went wrong? Is Mike Gesicki the best tight end in Miami history already? Did DeVante Parker get off of Sam’s “soft” list? If so, which receiver took his place? All this and more when Sam and Chris recap the week that was.

Plus, Miami may be 0-2 to start the season, but they aren’t the only team with a sad sack fan base to start the season. What other teams join Miami in Dolphins the chair of despair with the return of Misery Loves Company?

Episode 167: Week Two vs. Buffalo

This Week:

New season, same result. Miami lost to New England in week one of the 2020 season. Bad quarterback play, lackluster play calling and a bad case of vanilla ice cream on defense led to the loss against The Patriots. Oh, and that Cam Newton guy was pretty good running the ball from the quarterback position.

Beyond that, Miami appears to have some issues at the skill positions. Running Back, Matt Breida didn’t appear to play too much for some reason. Wide Receiver, DeVante Parker didn’t play in the second half and given his three interception performance, most fans were hoping that QB Ryan Fitzpatrick wouldn’t play any further either. Sam and Chris break down the tough loss ot the division rival.

The boys also play the classic game Would You Rather. They have to decide who is more deserving of being in the Hall Of Fame, Richmond Webb or Zach Thomas? Which team in the AFC East could they stomach losing the rest of Miami’s games against? That and more are explored on Would You Rather!

And of course, we discuss whether or not we will beat The Bills in our home opener. Can the boys rebound and take Josh Allen and the nerds from Western New York down? Or will the big, dumb idiotic QB rumble and stumble (but hopefully fumble) his way to another victory against The Dolphins?

The Miami Dolphins made a couple of surprising moves this week. The team announced that they would allow fans to be at home games this year under a strict social distance plan. Sam and Chris discuss what that plan is, how it could benefit Miami more than most teams and whether or not the number they landed on for maximum capacity was a coincidence or not.

The Dolphins also cut rookie 5th rounder Curtis Weaver in hopes of having him clear waivers and re-join the team on IR. The plan did not work as The Cleveland Browns snatched up the pass rushing defender. Did The Dolphins front office bungle this transaction? Will the team live to regret giving up on Mr. Weaver too soon? The boys kick it around.

Speaking of kicking it around, The New York Jets are kicking the tires on Kalen Ballage as they give up a late round draft pick to Miami for the former fourth rounder. What is even more curious than that were the reports that Miami was planning on cutting the running back outright but instead, were able to gain some draft capital. As a result, the boys discuss the culture and toxicity levels that an Adam Gase football teams tends to have and whether or not Gase is truly the offensive genius he claims to be. After all, as one tweet pointed out…”Adam Gase pays for free Costco samples.”

Miami Dolphins football is back! With pads, helmets and everything! Which means we discuss everything, as a result. Analysis of our quarterbacks, season ending injuries, and much more.

Early reports on Tua’s first week in full pads are conflicting. Some reporters say he looks perfectly fine, while others appear to hint that he is struggling. In related news, Josh Rosen appears to be looking quite well in his second year with Miami. Or maybe he isn’t. It really depends on which tweet you believe.

What IS true is that outside linebacker Vince Biegel is gone for the season with a brutal achilles tendon tear. His absence will be noticed more in the locker room than on the stat sheet, but the journeyman defender will be missed all the same. The guys discuss the impact Vince has had on this team since he arrived, and what the future holds for the team and the player.

Additionally, Xavien Howard does not appear ready to go for Miami. Coach Flores even went as far as to say that the cornerback spot we assumed was Xavien’s is officially up for competition. Are X’s days in Miami numbered? Did The Dolphins miss out on premium draft capitol by not trading him prior to the NFL Draft?

And finally, why do the New England Patriots continue to get a pass by the media about their awful behavior? They have cheated their way to six Super Bowl titles, and now appear to be tanking the 2020 season in an effort to improve their draft spot in next year’s Trevor Lawrence Sweepstakes. As a result, the sports media appears to be just fine with these developments despite crucifying Miami a year ago.

Speaking of positive vibes, Brian Flores continues to show that he a true leader on and off the field. His recent statements on world events seems ot have galvanized his players behind him even more, and has earned the praise of NFL folks across the world. Sam and Chris compare Coach Flo’s approach versus our former head coaches of yesteryear.

All in all, most Dolfans are highly satisfied with this year’s haul.

What seems like somewhat of a head scratching move on the surface, actually makes sense once you dig a little deeper like Sam and Chris do.

Plus, Alabama QB Tua Tiobuaobuogbrougbqeougbqeogblua, has declared for the NFL Draft! Does Miami take him at 5? Should they trade up to secure his selection? What would you be willing to give up IF you traded up? Is there a different strategy for Miami than we have been led to believe?

Episode 149: Everyone Get Back In The Tank

After two consecutive weeks of temporary insanity, The Miami Dolphins came back to earth and lose big to their rivals, The Buffalo Bills. Not only did they lose the game, but they also lost to more starters for the season as Bobby McCain and Reshad Jones were both put on injured reserve. While we have very little doubt that Bobby McCain with be with The Dolphins next season, Sam and Chris both fear that we may have seen the last of Reshad Jones in aqua and orange. Because of that, the boys discuss whether he is a Fin or Finished for 2020. And if he IS finished, where does nine year veteran Safety end up?

Speaking of ending up, the Fins ended up back in the cellar of the AFC East after last week’s loss. But oddly enough, they weren’t even close to being the most miserable thing in football this time. Misery Loves Company returns and lets you know who had it WORSE then the Pompano Porpoises. And in The Okay-ist Fantasy League Ever, the mayoral race is on as Sam faces off against Chris this week! Jim is also known for his work on Comedy Central’s show “Crank Yankers” where he performed the voice of Special Ed and Bobby Fletcher. Recently, Jim Florentine has appeared in the hit movie “Trainwreck ” and on the critically acclaimed TV series “Inside Amy Schumer”, as well as “Louie” on FX. He was submitted for an Emmy for best supporting actor for his role of Kenny on Louie.

Plus, another future Hall of Fame running back, Adrian Peterson recently suggested that he may take his talents to South Beach. Despite Adrian’s possible interest in the Fins, does the team have any interest in adding another veteran to a backfield that already has Frank Gore in it? If you had to choose between Peterson and Gore, which one would the Citizens of Perfectville choose, and why?

Perfectville returns to discuss the awful linebacking corps of the 2017 Miami Dolphins. Season ending injuries, AWOL veterans, under performing team captains and even an arrested thrown in for good measure, needless to say, but this unit was incredibly bad this past season.

New Defensive Coordinator, Matt Burke, was able to improve the backfield, and arguably the defensive line play, but the unit he is most closely associated with, suffered. Is it his fault? Did we mismanage talented players? Or did the players not step up and do their part?

Even more importantly, how does Miami rectify the problem before the start of the next season? Does spending more resources in the draft make sense? Pursuing more veterans that may fit our scheme better? Or is there a solution via trade that no one is thinking of?

Jarvis Landry led the league in the receptions, but has publicly made it known that he feels disrespected by Adam Gase and the Miami Dolphins during contract negotiations. Can the relationship between the player and the team be repaired? Or are we headed for a scenario where our record setting top receiver continues to set records in another team’s uniform?

Beyond the Landry situation, what answers, if any, does Miami have for the underwhelming season that DeVante Parker put up, again? Is he a victim of circumstance? Or is the former first round pick headed out of town after next season with a bust label tattooed on his forehead?

And the third member of the wide receiving, Kenny Stills, continues to go about his business, catching balls and cashing checks. The “glue guy” of this talented trio got paid last offseason. Did he prove that that payday was justified? Or does he need to do more in 2018 to justify the price tag?
