Under normal (with heavy emphasis on normal) circumstances, we should all be snug as bugs and moving onto other projects outside of the main house.

Trouble is, we do not seem to be normal and effectively built the house twice. Once in the original format but using plan 'C' and now in the new much more practical and comfortable format using plan 'A' (which we should have done originally)

Much has happened in the last three months and it is mainly because I have been trying to build content and accelerate my Landscape Juice site and the new Landscape Juice Network that I have kind of neglected updating this site.
The new kitchen is now 99% finished. Donna's Dad has been here for ten days and has rubbed down, filled and painted the triple French doors and Fleur's bedroom window (the old 'snug' window).

I have made an oak shelf to put on a few ornaments and for the first time, we are able to go into the barn where all of our belongings are stored and start to retrieve some of the useful and decorative items that we have not seen for nearly four years.

The most emotional moment for Donna and I will come this week when Henry will go into his own bedroom for the first time since leaving England. Sure, he has had a space of his own for a brief period when we have rented but not had his own 'space' that he could personalise.

Donna is completing the painting as I type and then the floor is going to get a polish and hopefully, this afternoon, we will assemble Henner's bed and get him set up.

I am pleased that we have had a chance to re do the old kitchen. At the time, everything was so rushed that I never felt as though I finished off properly. You know, plaster residues over wooden beams and probably the worst part was the lack of experience with the Lutece.

I am confident now that I can use the plaster at various stages of the mix from a runny'ish double cream to an advanced putty consistency so that large holes can be filled or voids shaped and sculptured to get the required profile.

What is more, using a simple paintbrush and copious amounts of fresh water, it is possible to work the material into spaces and finsih the surface to a fine detail that a humble finger will not allow (and without the lime burn too).

I do not know if you remember the old kitchen layout but it was a sort of open plan with the original simple steps up to the the bedroom and en suite. We have partitioned off the stairs to form a hallway and in doing so created Henry's bedroom.

All the tiles and work surfaces have been removed and the water and waste to the old kitchen sink boxed in just in case we wanted a show later on.

I have plastered all of the concrete block walls (I hate stud partitioning, especially in an old house) and I have plastered over any damage from removing the tiles and filling in the wood burner chimney outlet too.

We have also taken the opportunity to add an oak support beam under the upstairs floor to stop the creaking.
The great thing about the beam is we already had it as part of the milking sheds and because it had been there years, it was dry and stable. I used the electric plant to straighten up the side that sits against the joists but left the tongue worn exposed sides as they were. Donna scrubbed it clean and we treated it with Xylophene to kill any worm.

I thought that I would show you this pictured from last week. With the triple door facing West we can benefit from having a cool room which is sheltered behind the main structure of the house but fantastic sunsets.

When the sun is at treetop height it floods into the room and we get this amazing warm glow on the end wall. Mind you, the kids complain that you cannot see the tele properly.
I probably didn't go about the marketing properly (mainly because I could not fully understand how to navigate the site in French) Not to worry, at least I do not have to worry about spending a lot of time making another one at the moment.
I didn't put it on the site but I did actually build a second complimentary kitchen unit about six weeks ago but I ran out of steam after realising I was short of one set of hinges.

Only yesterday, with Henry's help complete the structure and today the top was sealed with Vernis Cuisine & Salle de Bains treatment. I added the door knobs today in Donna and I put it in place.

However, this could not be done until the immensely heavy hob of the Godin had been transported, with the help of two burly neighbours, from the old kitchen to the new barn kitchen.

We managed that last weekend (after the electrics - which turned into a nightmare - were done). So now, all the chrome and fittings have been re-assembled and now we are really pleased and content.

It is certainly not down to laziness because I have been doing plenty of other things and maybe it reflects the stage we are now at here in our farm house.

When things were moving at a pace and we were captivated by the excitement of the deadlines, I felt there was something of interest to keep readers popping back.

However, I am sure that no one wanted to hear what toothpaste we used and how many times a day we passed wind so the posts died down again.
I suppose that we are now comfortable, working and 'living the dream' so in a way, we have achieved the goal and maybe this blog will find another direction. It has served us rather well and has proved a rather useful tool for some out you that have found it.

I know that I have missed a great opportunity in creating an excellent resource for anyone wanting to start a new life and is looking for information.

I could have put up more pages with links to French departments, building resources, swimming pool information, schools and telephone suppliers etc etc but what I have gleaned, and I don't mean to sound conceited here, is that the people who have contacted us have found a certain inspiration from our project.

We have had a lot of highs and lows and tried to share them all, warts and all.

The sink is in

Anyway, back to the sink - it is now installed after the trials and tribulations. Castorama in Agen has not been easy to deal with. We ordered the sink on the 8th February and did not pick it up until the 24th March.

Whilst we were in the store on Easter Monday, Neil Morrisey, of 'Bob the Builder' and of Men Behaving Badly fame, was shopping for home improvement items with his partner.

It is amazing how many 'celebrities' have homes close by. Jimmy Hill has a house near St Vivien and I have seen Chris Packam at Bergerac and recently travelled on the same flight with Sally Taylor from BBC South Today back to Southampton.

Anyway, I digress, - we are absolutely delighted, despite the sleepless nights and anxiety about cutting into the oak surface, that the sink is in it and looks stunning.

Having never done this before I took advice from a couple of friends and cut a template from thin plywood (This has to be done by turning the sink upside down). I then transferred this to the surface and pencilled in the shape.

I then cut well within the markings with my jigsaw and, using clamps and a straight edge, cleaned up the rough cut with my router.

I then placed the sink through the opening from the top (only because I did not have the space from underneath) and secured it with two braces secured against the internal walls.

I then cut separate borders so that the we could 'oversail' the ceramic edges and give the appearance that the sink has been offered up from underneath.

What is also achieved this way, and I think is an important detail, is having a contra direction and contrasting direction with the grain of the wood - I hope you can pick this out in the photo (click to enlarge).

I just need to sort out the taps and the water connection with the drainage and we are away.

What a feeling.

The whole family, spent all of yesterday, moving furniture and ornaments and setting up the telephone wire and satellite so that we have all the facilities in the new room.

It is strange how 70 square metres shrinks when you add two sofas and an armchair as well as my desk, the dining room table

In tandem to installing the kitchen we vacated the little snug room which Fleur now has as a bedroom.

I think that I am more chuffed for fleur because she has her own space now than I am to be in the kitchen.
Both Henners and Fleur have been so patient in the last three and a half years but now they are to get a bit of freedom to grow up in.

I felt so sorry for her last night as time ran out before I could sort out a mattress support. Our good friends, Mark and Jan were due to arrive at 7 pm for supper as we had promised them that they would be the first to dine with us in our new space.

It was twenty five to seven and I was still in my work clothes and in need of a good shower. Fleur, who was worn out by the emotion of the day as well as having worked so hard, was beside herself and at one point, whilst slightly understanding, wanted desperately to sleep in her new French bed.

Not knowing what to do for the best with so little time, I cut four scaffold boards down to fit the internal length of the bed and rested them directly on the supports and we put here mattress on the top.

It was such a simply satisfying moment for all of us to see her so happy that she had a new bedroom. Today (Sunday) Fleur and Donna searched the barn where we are storing all of our bits and pieces since the move from England and decorated the shelves etc to make it homely.

I put a few pictures up and Donna helped put all of her little bits right.

We have also put up the electric fence ready for Tuesday when our horses come home for the first time and cur the grass which has been growing strongly in the warm spring sunshine.

Look at this picture of loads of Garlic that I found growing in the upper paddock (where the horses will be kept). I have no idea why there was so much there - perhaps it was grown commercially on the farm at some stage or perhaps it used to be the vegetable garden.

I dug it up and will dry it out - I have no idea if it will be any good to use in cooking because it is a bit early and has not grown to maturity - I will let you know.

It is now time to relax with a glass of wine.

When I say that it is complete, I am not quite correct because I have to put a softwood trim around the top and make a modification for a Belfast sink and electrical sockets.

Not everyone would want these mods if they had the same unit in their kitchen.

We will see how it goes but if you are living in the Lot et Garonne, the Lot or the Dordogne and would like one for your kitchen (made to measure) then give me a call or send me an email.

Update 07 October 2011: It's been three and a half years since we moved into our kitchen and started to use the island unit. As you can see it's had a new coat of paint (this matches our Godin woodburner and farmhouse stove).

The oak on the top, which was treated with a heatproof water-based sealant (V33 Cuisine & bains) together with the exposure to moisture and air, has gone a lovely golden colour and the wood grain stands out prominently.

Having said yesterday that I needed the help of three burly helpers, my family proved me wrong by manhandling our new kitchen island unit into place yesterday afternoon.

I had spent a leisurely Saturday morning painting the unit and Sunday morning rubbing it back to try and achieve an antique type look.

Today ((Monday) I attached the top and glued and clamped the oak surface. However, things came to a standstill when my (hardly used) circular saw would not cut in a straight line and started pinching.

I have asked Thierry if he will come with his circular saw and guide to finish the ends - I do not want to spoil what has been a hugely successful experience thus far by chewing the ends off with a saw that isn't up to the job.

What do you think of the colour?

There is no way that we would shift the unit with the solid oak surface on it but I would love to get this installed this weekend so I can start the painting - although, I may give it a coat of undercoat using the spray attachment to the compressor when it is in the open of the yard.

I fitted the hinges yesterday which is a job I dreaded. I have never been able to sink hinges successfully and always seem to have to remove at least one and re-site it. Well, yesterday was no different even though I had cut two rods (gauging and spacing indicators) to assist the location. Anyway, it all came good in the end and I am pleased with the result.

I used an authentic French hinge but I was far from happy with the pseudo antique paint finish so I tossed them all into the BBQ for ten minutes to remove the paint back to bare metal. I am not going to give them any form of treatment and if the hinges rust slightly then so be it. We both like that lived in feeling and the object of this exercise is to make this unit look as though it had been installed in the kitchen for years.

Well, I am getting on rather well as the pictures hopefully demonstrate.

I have taken the next few days off of work to concentrate on getting it finished and hopefully, with the wind blowing the right way, I will have it installed in the kitchen by the weekend.

Mind you, we still do not have the sink; Donna went to Agen yesterday and found one in Castorama but it will take two weeks to arrive which is frustrating. How hard is it to get hold of a Belfast sink?

There will still be a few jobs to finish off as well. Once the unit is in place, I intend to make a little up stand that runs through the middle behind the taps. There will be two double sockets the other side of the sink and a plinth on the top.

I have faked the photo slightly because the Oak surface is just rested on the top and the doors you can see are balanced in an upright position.

However, after tomorrow, when I have glued the last two doors (of five) and fitted the hinges I can concentrate on the sexy finishing touches like the beading that will provide a bit of decoration.

Yesterday though, things got a bit frustrating when the belt came off of the circular saw. It took over three hours to dismantle the machine to put the belt back on.

I think that the boffins who design these machines really ought to think about access for maintenance because it is such a tricky business.

I must sound like a real saddo but this kind of thing does excite me.

I have to admit to spending some money on plywood though which has spoilt my intentions of trying to build of the unit with reclaimed wood or something which I already had kicking around.

It seemed sensible to invest in the plywood because it is quick and extremely easy to work with. It also means that I can retain the old wood, plus the unused floorboards for all the visible stuff.

I am looking forward to Friday when I will start on the drawers and cupboard doors.

The second picture shows the decorative shelf end with hit and miss bars.

The solid oak work surface is resting on the floor. There are three 'planks' which I have created from all of the wood I had sized. It will not be glued and fixed until the carcass is in place.

Meanwhile, Donna and Fleur cracked on with painting the walls in the new kitchen. We had already bought a can of paint called Cashmere. It looked great on the lid but when applied as a test to the wall was too strong.

We were given a can of Terracotta to try also by our neighbour but that too looked to strong. In the end we opted for mixing the Cashmere with white at a ration of 1:12 which gave a much more subtle and traditional look.

All being well, the painting will be finished tomorrow and certainly by Friday so it just remains for the island carcass to be positioned, the second part of the Godin stove to be put in place

I had a brilliant day today, in fact, I had a brilliant weekend - helped by the balmy weather.

Just as a point of interest, and I will not name the company in case they take umbridge, Donna got an estimate - for the design - from a company for the same size unit and the cost? between £11-16k!!!!

I might not be of the same standard but heck, have I saved some money.

Time will only tell if it is a worthwhile saving but the framework is certainly substantial.
Mine will be a similar style to the one above (although not the gastly colour)

Not only that, with the birds singing and evenings drawing out till at least six thirty before the evening cloaks out the last of the light.

It has not come too soon though. We have, although nowhere near as bad as the UK, had our fair share of rain so it has certainly lifted the spirits. Mind you, to put it into perspective, it is still only January, so we could get a blast of Siberia at any time. The only consolation is we know that it is nearer now to spring.

The kitchen is 99.9% finished now (why is it, it seems just as long to finish off all of the little snags as completing a major task?).

The kitchen island unit

I had some good luck last week. Donna and I went looking for fence posts at a wood yard in Monpazier - we are just about to bring back Donna's horse to Jean Blanc after buying a second to keep him company - We successfully got the posts and whilst I was there - I am always looking for opportunities - noticed that the chap who was processing the chestnut fence posts was using a band saw rather than a circular saw.

I had bought a mixed load of wood quite some time ago which was proving to be difficult to process with my machinery. The Oak is as hard as nails and very heavy too and I didn't want to damage my equipment.

I asked the owner of the yard if he would consider cutting the large pieces (200mm wide by 100mm thick and 2 metres long) down to centre. The plan was to use the oak as the work surface for an island unit that I wanted to make for the kitchen.

To my amazement, he not only agreed but said, if I would help him clean up the area around the saw, he would do it for nothing!

This was not the time to look a gift horse in the mouth so I agreed to return, that afternoon, at 4 pm with my wood.

I loaded about eight pieces into the van and set off to the yard once more. It was pouring with rain but it was nice to be out for the day and as everything in the yard was under the cover of a massive roof it meant we could work in the dry.

I had to wait a little while when I arrived because the owner was loading all of the little cuts (produced when the chestnut fence posts are pointed) into a flat bed truck. The guys Mother had arrived, apparently, she uses all of these off cuts in her wood burning stove (something the tax man would be interested in in jolly old UK).

We moved the truck around to where the band saw was located and cleared all of the debris from the little carriage that ran past the band saw blade. It looked as though it had not seen the light of day for years with the track itself not visible at all.

To my amazement, and something that made me start to feel a little embarrassed, the owner started to dismantle the fittings of the saw - the bed and guides had a modification to allow it to be used for the pointing - so that the guides could be re-fitted. Not only that, and this made me feel a lot more uncomfortable because the agreement for doing it as a trade off, he fitted a new blade too.

The track was now clear of saw dust, off cuts and general debris that had been allowed to accumulate and then we blew all of the old 'rubbish' from the cogs and threads of the adjustment and regulation wheels and handles.

All in all, it took about two hours to restore the machinery to a workable status by which time it was dark outside. The rain continued to lash down but by this time I was completely fascinated by what we were doing.
I found it difficult to believe that the owner had gone to all this trouble to help me. I had considered that I would have to pay someone up to 50 euros but yet I was getting it for free and it actually added more value to wood.

Now it was time to start cutting the wood. A bit of tweaking and adjusting and then we clamped in a large piece of Oak. Basically, the saw is static and the wood is passed through the blade by the means of a carriage. The wood is clamped into position and then you adjust the alignment by winding the log in or out. This lets you cut off as little or as much as is needed in the for of a plank.

At the end, I said my 'thankyou's' and was just about to consider giving my new friend a few euros as a a token of my appreciation - after all, he had given up a lot of time and now been able to do his normal work, so that I could benefit - and I think he noticed me putting my had in my pocket. He waved his hand in front of me, almost with a look of being insulted, and gestured toward the now clean work area and said that it had been a fair trade off. I also think he was very pleased to have had a buddy for the afternoon who was genuinely interested in wood.

It didn't prove as easy as first thought. The wood had been in the old workshop in Monflanquin - believed to be an undertakers - for at least forty years. It was extremely hard which even made this massive cast iron, belt driven band saw struggle.

We worked it out that it was a question of speed that was the problem. The 'green (just cut, and therefore soft) chestnut was easy but the heart of the oak had sort of carbonised so it was literally as hard as iron. We had no choice but to slow right down.

It took over an hour to cut the eight pieces down the centre!

The result was sixteen pieces of much more manageable pieces of wood. As you can see from the photo, I have now processed these (slowly) into even small pieces of one sided and two square edged faced pieces of wood so that they can be glued together to form the top of the kitchen island unit.

I have caused myself a little extra work and a possible problem. Once the wood is positioned onto the frame (more about this in a minute), it means that it cannot lay evenly due to the variations in thickness of the wood (the underside is still in an as cut state with the twists and bumps that it had developed as it rested and dried in the workshop in Monflanquin.

I will have to use packers underneath on the frame to keep it rigid and maybe a beading of a consistent width around the border (although I would rather have the natural edge). The hardest challenge will be around the sink (this has to be cut into the surface) which may reveal a range of thickness's - watch this space.

The frame is challenging too. Remember, I am making this all up as I go along! I had limited experience with wood when I arrived so everything new is a massive learning curve.

I now have windows, doors, and some furniture under my belt which I am extremely pleased with but this is the largest piece of furniture that I have attempted. It will also be very prominent so I really want to make a good thrash at it.

I spent nearly all Friday afternoon frowning and telling myself that I could not do it and it was beyond me! This feeling of failure just made me angry with myself which is not a good emotion to be competing with when using a machinery that could cut your nails, right up to the elbows, in a jiffy.

The legs were easy to prepare. I had acquired four old fence posts in the bundle of wood. They were 100mm by 80mm square and I thought would make perfect legs for the unit.

I cut them to size, making sure that they were square at both ends and then planed and sanded as much of the old paint off as possible. I do not want them perfect because I want to create an old authentic farmhouse look.

I then retired for the day. It was Henner's fourteenth birthday (would you believe it, he was Ten we we got here) and we had friends coming round for supper. So, with the 'tomorrow is a another day' attitude I closed the workshop up.

The following day, the sun shone, the clouds were non existent and the opportunity as great as ever and I walked back into my workshop with renewed enthusiasm and a clearer head.

Just before, I had referred to a couple of websites that had free plans for units just to consult on acceptable techniques. It made me feel that I was capable of the job that lay before me. Just take your time and do not rush. If it takes a month then so be it.

I made the ends with the facility for two drawers in each and then glued it all together. (earlier in the day, my now good friend Thierry had brought back the two very long (2m) clamps for me to use (I do not have anything as long).

By late last night (either side of a BBQ and bonfire for all of Henry's mates - now an annual tradition) I had glued both ends ready for today where I hope to have the sides glued to that I have effectively got a table frame that I can start to add the partitions, shelving and holder for the sink during the week.

It was really exciting yesterday and I even overlooked the football (apart from an hourly update) because the adrenaline was in full flow. After all, this is what I wanted to do and I was getting the chance to do it.

It was 10 pm last night that I eventually finished so both ends should be strong enough for today.

I am back off to the workshop now and post some pictures of the prepared oak as well as the frame later today.

And it is not as though I have no progress to report.

I think it is just a case of getting a little out of touch with the key tapping on Perigord Vacance, and, as it is with any task that lags behind, once you miss a day or so, but the source of the writing, i.e., our French Life, carries on. Anyway, enough of the self pity!

We are so close to moving into the farmhouse kitchen now. Half of the floor has been waxed and polished - although it will need a second application - and Donna has started to cut in the paint around the edges.

At the end of last week I plastered the concrete returns on either side of the new doors and also plastered the old lintel above the door.

Before I could do this I had to screw some plasterboard to the front so that the plaster had a key (don't ever try to plaster directly onto wood, it will fall off in weeks because it cannot grip the surface).

I delibereately used old off cuts and was especially careful not to make it look formal. This way, it leaves a wany edge to the plater where it meets the crepie - much more romantic in these old properties.

The wood burning stove has also been repositioned and I am glad that I do not have to move it again!
With the help of our neighbours, and after stripping off anything that I could to keep the weight down, we edged it to the front door.

Luckily, I still have the telescopic, so after loading it onto a pallet it was a little easier after this. I transported it and extended it straight into the kitchen through the French doors. Then we only had to lift it a metre and a half to the new position.

We were rather fortunate on this occasion, the wood burner is directly behind the large fireplace in the 'snug'.
After measuring the height, I punched a hole through the wall into the void behind and to my complete astonishment, the position was absolutely perfect. The new pipe with the 90 degree bend is about 30cm above the mantelpiece so completely out of site from the room.

We have also noticed, because the new kitchen is a metre lower than the previous floor level, we are getting a greater draw from the fire. This will be a great reward because previously, when the weather was foggy or drizzly outside, the smoke would not rise and we would get it blow back through the seams of the fire.

Our time here in France continues to be adventurous and we are on the cusp of another milestone by completing the 'farmhouse' kitchen.

I do not know where the year has gone - it was over a year ago that we started to renovate the barn and initially the target was to be in by June. However, the radical changes to the plan meant that this objective changed somewhat (as regulars will no doubt remember).

Anyway, the second target became, unofficially, Christmas, and we will miss this by a whisker.
The doors are in! Thierry arrived as promised and we spent Friday fitting the frame and the fixed panel (that is the right had one when viewing from outside). We have the glazing ready to go in but there is one last hitch.

I was under the impression that Thierry was bringing the lock mechanisms with him (this system is two sliding rods which run through the lock for the full length of the door. As the rods slide they click four bolts into place making the security much stronger).

I spent yesterday (Saturday) running around to try and find the right one which proved fruitless and it means I will now have to order one next week. Because of the Christmas holidays and this being France it could easily be another ten days which will be irritating to say the least.

I have a little plastering to do around the door (about one days work) which I can do without the doors being in so I can get on with this after Christmas (I have until about the 14th before clocking back into work).

In the meantime, we now have the Hydrochloric acid and the sealant for the terracotta tiles. In the week we will scrub the surface - we have borrowed a sander/polisher from the tile place so that we can do this without too much elbow grease.

In the meantime, we would like to wish all our friends and family who still log onto the site a very very Happy Christmas and restful and prosperous 2008.

I must say they really cleaned up well. I took this photo while they were wet to give an idea of how they will look when the wax plish has been added and the surface buffed up.

Last week, Donna had a week long business trip to the UK so it was left to me to keep the team on track. Well, I failed miserably! We missed the bus three times out of the five days.

My only excuse was the amount of work I had to put into jointing the floor. It took three and a half solid days to joint and clean the floor and one evening, and I do not jest, I was out in the barn/kitchen at 11.45pm washing tiles off.

All that is now history and the last of the really major jobs is complete. Today, I plastered the steps which will eventually lead into the living room and dining room proper.

For now they just lead into the barn which will still be useful because the freezer is just outside that door.

I am using a different plaster and I must say, after getting used the Lutece 2000, I am not to pleased with the change.

I really do prefer the Lutece, although Delta Court (by Le Farge) gives you slightly longer to work the surface down, because it is so manageable.

Tomorrow, I will complete the large steps which will leave us very close to completion. Unfortunately, Thierry didn't come on Saturday to help install the doors (although everything is ready to go). He has promised sincerely that he will come on Friday. The glass is ready so we shall be weather proof after.

The floor is finally finally finished! In fact it took just one hour on
Tuesday morning to cut the last few in. I didn't do any last week
because of a visit from my Brother Dan and my sister-in-law Donna
although Dan did help me with gluing the doors which was quite a tricky
job.

I have about half a day to finish the large steps which I hope will be done in the morning and then I will plaster the chimney pots (which remain from the previous configuration and will be un-used for the
foreseeable future.

We also ordered the double glazed units yesterday which should be here in a week or so which is great timing because this Saturday, Thierry and I are putting in the French doors and matching panel.

I have stood the doors up in this picture to show how they will kind look when they are filling in the old barn door. They still need to be trimmed top and bottom but we didn't want to do this until the floor was finished so that we can get an accurate cut.

been sitting on my bum so here it is, just for Hillary.

I underestimated the time is would take to cut and lay the tiles in the barn and although I took all last week off to concentrate on it I didn't really get moving until Wednesday.

I think that the kitchen will have such character when it is finished. The tiles are clay with a hand finished egde which softens the look.

If the wind is in the right direction I should finish by the end of Sunday of maybe Monday afternoon.Last Saturday I visited the workshop of Thierry to complete the profiles of the doors and panels that will close in the barn door.

I took loads of photos and just like the plonker I am, I erased them thinking I had already saved a copy to my computer. When will I ever learn?

Anyway, after working with Thierry for about 5 hours on the Saturday (an a hearty French lunch) I glued the fixed panel together back at my workshop on Sunday.

I must say I am chuffed to little meat balls.

Yes, today we laid the first of the floor tiles in the new kitchen. We had planned to start yesterday but after pulling through the four water pipes for the radiators I noticed that they needed to pas through the walls at the same junction as the electric conduits.

There was not enough space to get the tubes through so I had to take out a stone adjacent to accommodate
the water pipes. To complicate things the oil pip[e that feeds the boiler passes just below where I had to break the wall out so it was a little delicate. The stone was bigger than a football and it took two hours to drill around it to loosen the mud mortar.

After this I chased the tubes under the electric cables by cutting out a channel into the concrete. So today we were all systems go to start laying.

We have opted for a new terra cuit (terracotta) with a hand finished edge which softens the look.

Unfortunately, we could not find any second hand tiles which would have been our first choice. However, it still does not feel as though we have 'dumbed down' and they do look nice.

Marking out was fun because the room is not square so I have decided to make a focal point in the centre which is dead square and then work back to the walls. This is designed to attract the eye to the points which are easy to relate to the surroundings.

The kitchen door

I forgot to add a photo of the completed kitchen door which has now been hung. I am really chuffed with it, especially as I have basically made it out of scraps of wood.

I hope that at the end of this week I can visit Thierry's workshop with my door and finish off the profiles.

So, fingers crossed, by the middle of next week we shall have a floor and new doors so we will be weather proof and ready to open up the internal door down into the new kitchen.

Click on the picture of the door to enlarge it and see much better detail.

In the meantime, we have had all of the fields drilled with the wheat (and some grass seed). All we need now is some rain. It has been really dry here for well over a month (although we did have some rain overnight last Thursday).

The weather is due to turn rather chilly this week with -4 overnight and bring to an end this great spell of warm(ish) weather.

The reason for the grass seed? - well we have acquired another horse. This was necessary so that we could bring Izzy back here. It was such a shame that we have all of this land and yet have to pay to keep the horse elsewhere.

Jazz as he is called was living on his own and was rather sad. His owner, a French lady had had him for the last ten years but felt he needed to be put with other horses so that he would not be so lonely.

We went to see him and then agreed to take him on and we paid a small fee.
I need to do a bit of fencing to make the top field secure and Donna and Fleur have cleared out the lean too barn in readiness
.

Watch this space as they say.

Back in May we had the most amazing downpour which infiltrated the barn I am renovating, pouring water through the plasterboard that had only just been skimmed with plaster.

It has taken since then to about three weeks ago to get a quote from the roofer for some work so that we could put in a claim to the insurance.

But, this week we had an almighty downpour, like a tornado, and again we had water came through which I recorded for the insurance.

Fingers crossed, this week, we will here what compensation we will receive so that we can repair the damage and insure it does not happen again.

In the meantime, with some pointers from my mate Mark, I have complete the electrics in the barn. Up until now we have used the services of a very good electrician who wired the gite and the main house. I was a bit frustrated that I have never done any electrics so with Mark's help and a very good book called l'installation électrique I have worked out how it is all done and installed it all myself.

I have also designed and made an internal door out of the wood I bought from Monflanquin.
Have you ever walked around a French town and see the doors that have boards across that are not parallel?

I wanted to make one like that, so, using all the different types of wood I did just that.
And, I must say, I am absolutely delighted with the results. The door is solid, character filled, lovely to look at and unique.

What is more, I managed to use up two of the strap hinges and heavy duty slide bolt that I salvaged when we bought the property. Apart from one extra hinge and some bolts the door has just cost me time. I reckon, if I were to have had the door made by a carpenter - remember it is a one off - then I reckon 3-500 euros. Bearing in mind I paid 750.00 euros for the wood I reckon it it a cheap door (although I broke a band saw blade in the process).

Now that I am getting the hang of the electrics I am wiring out the workshop now with lights and sockets. It will great to be able to work in the evenings and not relying on the sun for light to work safely and it means I can coil up the extension leads for good which were always a hazard.

The weather is sensational at the moment and after a misty start in the mornings we are getting a magical clear blue warm day with wall to wall sunshine and about 22 degrees.
I know winter is coming but the longer this goes on the better.

Let us hope we have a mild winter and a short one to boot. although I always think the seasons are necessary for the plant and wildlife and also to let us enjoy the spring as well.

ou may think that this is going slowly but the last thing I want to do is have the whole thing falling down on me. I did a barrow load of muck yesterday morning and another in the evening and the same today. This gives the early mix time to go off enough to remain stable.

All being well I will finish off the left hand pier tomorrow but then I have the quandary of removing the acrow props to get the new lintel underneath without it all falling down.

You will have to excuse the quality of this second photo. I didn't adjust the camera settings for the low light levels and just used the point and shoot facility. The result is a rather blurred and dark photo. I will remedy this tomorrow though I promise.

The first photo was after yesterdays work. I only managed an hour or so because the weather was so nice and we decided to go and have a look at a house that is for sale with a friend. In fact a perfect late summers day so there was no real urgency in the morning.

Because we didn't have anyone coming in this week our guests decided to extend their holiday by one day but it felt rather empty today and it is never the same when the Pigeonnaire is not lived in.

It would be nice to let it out through the winter so that the lights come on at night. It does look so homely at night with a warm orange glow, peering out of the windows.

The hunting season is well under way and hounds were in full cry yesterday. I am sure that the Chasse is aware of the presence of the boar and are hoping to bag a few before the season ends in February.

We are not as heavily wooded as the Dordogne so the boar are fewer in our area of the Lot et Garonne. A big boar is the ultimate prize for a Chasser.

We were inundated with 4 x 4 vehicles, men wearing orange hats and carrying guns with packs of hunting dogs. At one point it was like the charge of the light brigade as they emerged from the maize in extended line after a final flush.

No boar were seen but I am sure they will continue their persuit until blood is spilt.
