What is Permarexia ? No real defined definition but I would call it an obsession with diets and constant dieting. Extremes would be the example of the "waif" look models of the 1990's. Another extreme would be the person whom is a constant dieter going out on binge eating splurges only to come back to an extreme regime of dieting to counteract the binge.

This is not to be confused with anorexia, my heart goes out to those effected. But to those whom consider this (Permarexia) to be an issue in their lives it can be to them deverstating.
Fairly or unfairly Victoria Beckam was regarded as Permarexic but so would most woman and now a higher than before number of males.

Don't lose sight that this is also an issue about body image and how we perceive ourselves.
<large>Thin Catwalk Models , A turn Off??</large>

While previous research has established that ultra-thin models have a negative impact on body image for many girls and women , until now no study has investigated alternative images that could be used effectively in advertising.
In a project involving 800 women, Dr Dittmar and Dr Halliwell compared the impact of viewing adverts featuring ultra-thin models, typically dress size eight, with adverts featuring models with a dress size 14, which represents both a healthy body weight as well as the average UK dress size.
They found that women who already wanted to change their appearance were particularly susceptible to being affected by viewing ultra-thin models and reported increased negative emotions about their own bodies after exposure. In contrast, viewing average-size models did not have a negative effect on women's body image, compared with exposure to neutral, appearance-unrelated images.
Dr Dittmar, a reader in Psychology at Sussex says: "These findings suggest that average-size models may be used in advertising without compromising the effectiveness of the advert and without increasing body image concerns amongst many women.
"Models with a healthy, normal body size could be used effectively in advertising

(Most men have body mass indexes that are over 20.) On high-end fashion runways, labels such as Dolce & Gabbana and Jil Sander trotted out some noticeably skinny men earlier this year.

Preliminary examinations indicated the cause of death as heart attack,[1] believed to be related to malnutrition;[2] however, final test results will be released at a later date.

Modeling friends confirmed that she had suffered for many months after her sister Luisel Ramos, 22, died of heart failure, but rejected speculations that an eating disorder could have played a role. Her sister died shortly after stepping off a runway in August 2006 during a fashion show at a Montevideo hotel. An autopsy resulted in the same cause of death.

The deaths drew widespread media attention in Latin America, where the fashion industry's treatment of young women has been the subject of debate since anorexia was blamed for the deaths of model Ana Carolina Reston and three other women in December.

I would almost think this to be reverse permarexia It is a obsession with ones body image and to achieve this body image drastic health threatening regimes are undertaken. Like the female catwalk model there is also the male body builder and athlete or male model, rock star etc etc..
I have contacted the Bodywhys people for comment and hope to have it soon. In the mean time this article although written about anorexia is of interest.

http://www.bodywhys.ie/t.php?c=about_eating_disorders/males.html
Risk Factors For Males

There are many reasons why a person might develop an eating disorder.

There may have been a traumatic event or a series of events, feelings of pressure and/or an accumulation of stress with which the person feels unable to cope.

For males the following may be triggers:

Being overweight for their height and age as children and/or having been teased or bullied about weight.
A history of dieting. Dieting is one of the most powerful risk factors for eating disorders in both men and women.
Being excessively concerned with fitness, which in turn can lead to over exercising. Men in particular, can become obsessed with moulding their bodies into a particular physique.
Participation in a sport or other activity that demands thinness. Runners, jockeys, boxers, rowers and dancers, for example, are at higher risk than football players.
A job or profession that demands thinness. Male models, actors and entertainers seem to be at higher risk than the general population.
Conflict and anxiety over gender identity or over sexual orientation may precipitate the development of an eating disorder in some males.
Some men experience severe distress due to body image disturbance. This condition is known as Body Dysmorphia.

Reverse Anorexia is a name given to a disorder where there is a drive to increase bulk accompanied by obsessive behaviours (related to both exercise and nutrition) and significant body image distortion. This is also know as Muscle Dysmorphia.

Don't feel bad each one of us is a story in itself ,full of drama, comedy and mystery. The world is reliant on our survival and our desire to move on with our lives, Making our lives better is what its all about . That where health is important to achieve the best we can we must feel physically and mentally the best we can.
I am not about to go into a frenzy of I know what's best but close your eyes and say to yourself what do I need to do to make my life better?
What do I feel I need to do?
Health and wellness , Look at all areas of your health, Internal and external, Physical and mental

So is weight lifting and aerobics but the health complications for permarexic people is greatly increased by the fact some only sustain themselves with nutrition just to make it to the next small meal. Your comments greatly appreciated.
