Ep #00115 - Top Things of 2013! (also, goodbye)

Well folks, this is it (for now). Perpetual Geek Machine as we know it in this form is shutting down. It's been a grand run of 115 episodes, most of which we're really proud of. In addition to feeling a bit jaded about how hard it can be to get your podcast into peoples' ears the crew here has also been lucky to be saddled with not one, not two, but 3 baby geeks. While this is certainly cause for celebration, it's also a sobering reminder of our dwindling free time that's only going to grow smaller with 3 new geeklings in the wild. So, best to send the site off rather than see it putter out. We'll still be kicking around online on twitter and and still be stomping around at PAX East though.

For out final show we've got a banger on our hands. It's something of a tradition around these parts. We all sit down and come up with a personal "Top 5" list for the year. Then we share them all, debate them out and come up with 1 singular thing we think it's the top "thing" of the year. Previous winners include The Muppets return movie and the Mars Rover. What takes home the crown this year? Listen and find out!

As we put the show behind us and lock up as we leave, it behooves me to thank each and every one of you that listened to a show, or commented on a post or interacted with us in any way. We enjoyed it, and hope you did to. Not going to say goodbye, because I bet at some point we power this beast back up and see if she still runs.

A few weeks back at game night Adam and Dan were talking excitedly about the upcoming Doctor Who 50th anniversary episode. Rich, having never seen the show asked some questions about it and where he could jump in. Dan maintains that you can basically jump in anywhere, and Rich took him up on that by watching the 50th without ever having seen anything else. So, did he like it?

A new deck building game with an interesting twist of adding board component called Trains get discussed, as well as a spat of TV shows including Almost Human, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Sons of Anarchy and The Wire.

Ep #00103 - Teaching Podcasting 101 to Kids

I know we say quite often that is isn't one of our "normal" shows but this time that's actually true. This past week Kevin, Dan and Adam taught a class at the local library called Podcasting 101 aimed at kids and teens. While we anticipated slightly older teens and had a somewhat technical presentation ready, we quickly realized that these kids were both a bit young and inexperienced in the world of podcasting. So we focused more on what podcasting means to us, what we think it affords us and what we get out of it. After that, we coaxed a few of the kids onto the mic to talk to them a bit, ask about what they're into and see how they felt behind the mic.

Some of the audio might be a bit rough in spots, but you'll have to excuse the kids enthusiasm of sometimes not realizing that you have to get pretty close to the mic.

A good time was had by all and hopefully we inspired a few of the kids to maybe try a show of their own.

This is sort of amazing everyone. 100 episodes of the Perpetual Geek Machine. For a show that started bi-weekly back in 2010 I'm pretty damn proud of what we've done here. We've added greatly to the cast of characters here over time but I can honestly say the show is getting better all the time. I thank you sincerely for listening, and please tell your friends!

We talk about the special milestone of the show a bit, but all in all we keep a pretty regular schedule, though we took the chance to blow way over time. Perpetual Geek Machine Podcast - TheBBPS Jeopardy Flashback

Some required context for this one. Perpetual Geek Machine has been around since 2010. But in 2006 we used to be called The Bits, Bytes, Pixels & Sprites (or TheBBPS for short) and had a podcast there called "The Bitcast" which ran for 90 episodes.

During one of those episodes we decided to play a little game of Jeopardy, and then co-host Jim Squires (now editor in chief of Gamezebo.com) came up with questions and played host while Ryan, Kevin & Dan all played. Hard to believe this happened all the way back in 09.

Here's the original description:

This is a bit of a weird one, not only in day of delivery but in itinerary and cast as well. We set up shop in the bar of the Westin hotel in Boston, attached to the BCEC where PAX East 2013 was in swing and just recorded a podcast. Then we played some Cards Against Humanity. Most of us consumed alcohol the entire time.

I wore a fez for a good part of the evening and I'd by lying if I said a horse head mask didn't make an appearance. We had some friends drop in, some listeners stop by and more. The whole night is a bit hazy so I'm not totally sure who was there when we actually recorded, but if you're in the show you'll know who you are.

Ryan is finally back and though work has been kicking his ass he's found time to pick up a new iPad and check out the puzzly mind-bender The Room. Otherwise he's checking out the much-hyped Homeland on Showtime.
Kevin saw Spielberg's Lincoln, so he and Dan chat about that for a bit and marvel at Daniel Day Lewis. Dan has been completely obsessed and enamored with the simplicity and brilliance of Super Hexagon. We all give it a whirl as we're chatting about it for good measure. Kevin introduced himself to They Bleed Pixels and the sorrow/frustration/elation that comes with it. Not to break up the Hard As Shit Video Game trend we had going we talk a bit about Super Crate Box, recently released to Steam.
Shifting from digital to analog Adam and Dan played a round of the much-lauded steam punk airship battle game Leviathans (buy) and try to explain what the awesome but complex tabletop game is all about. They also checked out the new expansion for Dominion, Dark Ages (buy).

His console time has been spent replaying Halo: Reach solo on Legendary difficulty. Most importantly, he watched one of Hitchcock's best films, Strangers On A Train.
Lastly Kevin finished Episode 1 of TellTale's Walking Dead game, is excited to play Episode 2 just in time for this week's release of Episode 3. What'cha Been Doing? finally wraps up a bit morbidly as he talks about his recent fascination with the people who climb Mt. Everest that led him to reading the excellent Into Thin Air.

What’cha Been Doing? (5:18 - 1:14:36)

Ryan has been accessorizing his productivity as of late. After a casual search he has finally tracked down one of those wireless Xbox controllers and receivers that are marketed for use on the PC even though any wireless 360 controller will work with the receiver. He also picked up the ridiculously modular RAT7 mouse from Mad Catz. His Macs are now running Mountain Lion, we briefly chat about whether operating systems should all be free and then he tells us about the most affordable way to own the Adobe suites (hint, pay the monthly fee for Adobe Creative Cloud)
Dan drops in part way through to grace us with his presence and tells us about his new house that's been keeping him pretty busy. Somehow he's had some time to take a look at Dyad and discover that it's a game tailor-made for his tastes. He had a chance to get in touch with his past through the recent release of Tony Hawk HD, but discovers that some feelings just can't be recreated. Lastly he's still very much enjoying Pinball Arcade and the new tables they're putting out monthly.
Kevin (that's me!) worked a whole bunch this past week and didn't get really any time to check stuff out so he talks about the first episode of the new Black Dynamite animated series on Adult Swim. It's pretty great and you all should check it out if you knew what was good for ya.
Rich continues to live up to being one of the resident "Movie Guys" around here as he checked out one of Dan's favorite films, the original Rollerball from 1975. Somehow we get a good amount of conversation out of a 37 year-old film. He also watched an all-time sci-fi classic Forbidden Planet and was surprised at how much he enjoyed this film from way back in 1956. Lastly he delves into the Batman Hush story arc based on some recommendations.

Just after noon on Friday we had the chance to sit down with Chris Plinksy from the Dungeons and Dragons group over at Wizards of the Coast. He told us all about their plans for the upcoming year across all facets of the Universe. Be it RPG, boardgame or miniatures it seems like the Dungeons and Dragons brand has got you covered with tons of product. (2:09 - 12:11)

After our Wizards of the Coast meeting we decided to hit the show floor and check out some of the smaller indie dev titles. While trying to make sure we saw everything we also did our best to pull a few of the developers aside and chat them up about their games!

First up, Ziba Scott from PopCannibal talks Girls Like Robots(13:21 - 16:40)
Then, David Sushil from Bad Pilcrow (developers of the fantastic Vanessa Saint-Pierre Delacroix and her Nightmare) filled us in on his new game Not Without You(16:40 - 18:43)
We then ventured out into the corners of the show floor and found a first person golf game laced with ghosts and ghouls called Curse of the Nordic Cove and talked to On the Level GamesExecutive Director of Design & Development Jeff Reimert about it (18:43 - 20:55)
Finally we spoke with Jake Kazdal from Haunted Temple Studios about Skulls of the Shogun.(20:55 - 22:37)

Taking a break from the show floor we decided to head for higher ground and found ourselves in the Kickstarter Arcade room, featuring both current projects and past winners.

After watching a few moments of Guns Of Icarus Online we pulled aside Alex Jarocha-Ernst from Muse Gamesto talk to us about it. (24:07 - 26:46)
No rest for the wicked, we ventured to the tabletop area and met up with Dave Schrader from Schrader Heavy Industries who was demoing his single book role playing game the "Light Weight RPG." In between adventures we had him tell us a little bit about his project. (26:46 - 28:43)

Sunday came around too fast, as is always the case with PAX. However before catching a train to head home we decided to squeeze in a few more demos and playtests with a doubleshot of titles at Steve Jackson Games.

First up is the to-be-released-this-summer castle building game Castellan. The pieces were really unique and you can see us playing in some of these pictures. Lots of fun and the interlocking pieces are nice! (29:25 - 32:38)
Then we managed to finagle a conversation with Andrew Hackard, Munchkin Brand Manager, who spoke on what Munchkinis and what areas the tounge-in-cheek game is going to move into next Munchkin (32:38 - 37:30)

A little before PAX East we interviewed George Rothrock: Director of Product and Busines Development & Gary Weis: Chief Technology Officer from Playdek about their conversion of the combative deck building game Nightfall. We almost had to call this podcast off. On Thursday we all head up to Boston for PAX East 2012 and our excitement was coming to life in the form of extreme hyperactivity. Rich and I were running around my basement uncontrollably until Ryan reached through the internet cables through Skype and shook the hyper out of us. Luckily we were able to calm down long enough to get this show on tape. Err...I mean hard drive.

This one here is a bit special to me dear listeners, as I got to interview one of my favorite fantasy authors R.A. Salvatore! I've been reading his books since high school (trust me, it's been awhile) and he always manages to capture my imagination. Really cool, down-to-Earth guy too. I can promise you dear listeners that when we sat down to do this show we never intended it to be so Disney filled, just turned out that way. Not that Dan is upset mind you, he could talk about that shit for hours and hours. I mean he just got back from vacationing there and discussed the changes since he had been there 2 years ago. We do think geekspew offers something new in the way of a history lesson certainly for the nerdy, and serves to maybe spread some of the interest that Dan has in the man known as one time as "Uncle Walt." The rest of the show as usual covers much ground, from old school sci-fi shows to tales of biker gangs. The crew also discusses the bitter end to their latest Dungeons and Dragons adventure. It's all good stuff.

I'm trying to put my finger on why this show ran so long, since our range of topics was actually shorter than usual. It's nothing bad mind you, just one of those "huh, weird" moments when you stop recording and look at the total running time. Not that I minded, it was great catching up with our friend and east coast Shacknews.comeditor Xav De Matos. Seems like only yesterday I was his editor and was fielding cease and desist calls from international lawyers (true story). Ahh, memories.
