But plenty of excitement (and shocks) are coming Jack's way once his mom loans him out to help a fiesty old neighbor with a most unusual chore-- typewriting obituaries filled with stories about the people who founded his utopian town. Endlessly surprising, this sly, sharp-edged narrative makes readers laugh out loud at the most unexpected things in a dead-funny depiction of growing up in a slightly off-kilter place where the past is present, the present is confusing, and the future is completely up in the air.

HEART AND SOUL: THE STORY OF AMERICAN AND AFRICAN AMERICANS, written and illustrated by Kadir Nelson
This is the story of the men, women, and children who toiled in the hot sun picking cotton for their masters; it’s about the America ripped in two by Jim Crow laws; it’s about the brothers and sisters of all colors who rallied against those who would dare bar a child from an education. It’s a story of discrimination and broken promises, determination and triumphs.

Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award Winner
UNDERGROUND: FINDING THE LIGHT TO FREEDOM, written and illustrated by Shane W. Evans
A pivotal moment in American history is shared with young readers by following a slave family's escape to the North by crawling on the ground, running barefoot through the woods, sleeping beneath bushes, and eventually reaching freedom.

Geisel Award Winner (for beginning readers)
TALES FOR VERY PICKY EATERS, written and illustrated by Josh Schneider
James is a very picky eater. His dad has to get creativ in order to get James to eat foods he thinks he doesn’t like. He presents James with a series of outlandish scenarios packed with fanciful and gross details-- like pre-chewed gum as an alternative to broccoli and lumpy oatmeal that grows so big it eats the dog-- in an effort to get James to eat. But it is eventually James himself who discovers that some foods are not so bad, after all, if you’re willing to give them a try.

Sibert Award Winner (for non-fiction)
BALLOONS OVER BROADWAY: THE TRUE STORY OF THE PUPPETEER OF MACY'S PARADE, written and illustrated by Melissa Sweet

Who invented the first balloons for Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade? Meet Tony Sarg, puppeteer extraordinaire! Everyone's a New Yorker on Thanksgiving Day, when young and old rise early to see what giant new balloons will fill the skies. Who first invented these “upside-down puppets”? Melissa Sweet tells the story of Tony Sarg, capturing his genius, his dedication, his zest for play, and his long-lasting gift to America-- the inspired helium balloons that would become the trademark of Macy's Parade.
The Book Selection Committee, composed of Greenwich Library staff from across several departments, focused on selecting the one book that will span the community in appeal and will lend itself to engaging public programs.
In the days after, he traveled the flooded streets in a secondhand canoe, passing on supplies and helping those he could. But, on September 6, 2005, Zeitoun abruptly disappeared. Eggers's riveting nonfiction book, three years in the making, explores Zeitoun's roots in Syria, his marriage to Kathy—an American who converted to Islam—and their children, and the surreal atmosphere (in New Orleans and the United States generally) in which what happened to Abdulrahman Zeitoun became possible.

From Random House's Website:

ALA Members: In 500 words or less, tell us about a new librarian or library student who has never attended an ALA Annual Conference, and in whom you see great devotion to the library community and promise in the field. Tell us how he/she would benefit from attending the ALA Annual Conference. The new librarian/library student could win a trip to attend the 2012 ALA Annual Conference in Anaheim, California.

Sunday, November 13th, 2011

Kids of all ages will enjoy this paper crafts workshop led by award-winning children's author, illustrator and educator Timothy D. Bellavia. How Do You Know a Hero? will challenge boys and girls to design their very own action figures by transforming plain templates into police officers, firefighters and paramedics. Kids can deck out their heroes with uniforms, badges and other pintsized accoutrements replicated from objects and photos showcased in the Historical Society’s current exhibition, Everyday Heroes: Greenwich First Responders. They’ll then set their creations’ heroic feats against scenes from the exhibition. The How Do You Know a Hero? workshop was designed to promote understanding of the importantrole first responders play in daily life. This workshop is a new spin on Bellavia’s well known franchise We Are All The Same Inside® workshop in which children create individual characters with the goal of learning to recognize our common humanity while embracing diversity.

Workshops will be held at 1:00, 2:30 and 4:00 PM

Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011, 7:30 PM

The Chanel suit: it is one of the 20th century's most iconic garments. Seen by many as the epitome of style, its classic silhouette is instantly recognizable, and yet owning one is, for most women, only a dream.

Author and curator Charlotte Smith will return to Perrot to discuss her latest book, Dreaming of Chanel, which reveals the backdrop and dreams attached to pieces of clothing, whether they are made by famous designers or unknown dressmakers. She chronicles the lives and times of the wearers, and what evolves is a fascinating history of style and couture throughout the ages. Ms. Smith is the curator of the Darnell Collection, Australia's largest private collection of over 3,000 items of vintage clothing and accessories, which she inherited from her American godmother, Doris Darnell. Ms. Smith will enhance her stories with examples of some of the fabulous pieces from the collection.

For baseball’s longest game ever played, one would need more than just a beer. On April 18, 1981, Holy Saturday, just after dusk, the game between the Pawtucket Red Sox and the Rochester Red Wings was underway. It played on and on into the night. What a good look into the lives of many people: umps, players, bat boys who carried on with the integrity of the game in the forefront. Enjoy this wonderful baseball book as our own baseball season is almost ending. Once reviewer writes: "…a pitch-perfect and seamless meditation on baseball and the human condition."
