Perseid This is the most famous of all meteor showers. It never fails to provide an impressive display and, due to its summertime appearance, it tends to provide the majority of meteors seen by non-astronomy enthusiasts. This meteor shower gets the name "Perseids" because it appears to radiate from the constellation Perseus. An observer in the Northern Hemisphere can start seeing Perseid meteors as early as July 23, when one meteor every hour or so could be visible. During the next three weeks, there is a slow build-up. It is possible to spot five Perseids per hour at the beginning of August and perhaps 15 per hour by August 10. The Perseids rapidly increase to a peak of 50-80 meteors per hour by the night of August 12/13 and then rapidly decline to about 10 per hour by August 15.

At the height of the display, Northern Lights descended as far south as Wisconsin and Iowa in the United States. And not all the lights were Northern. EARLY PERSEID FIREBALL: This week, Earth is entering a stream of dusty debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle, the parent of the annual Perseid meteor shower. We're only in the outskirts of the stream now. The shower won't peak until August 12th and 13th when we're much deeper inside. Nevertheless, sky watchers are already seeing some early Perseids. "On Monday night, a Perseid meteoroid, about 1 inch in diameter and traveling at 134000 mph, entered the atmosphere 70 miles above Paint Rock, Alabama," reports Bill Cooke of NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center. "Moving at such a tremendous speed, the meteor cut a path some 65 miles long above that state, finally burning up 56 miles above Macay Lake. The skies above Britain will be the scene of a celestial fireworks show tonight as part of an annual meteor shower. Perfect weather conditions mean that many will be able to see the Perseid shower in all its glory. The cosmic phenomenon occurs every August when the Earth passes through a swarm of dusty particles from the Swift-Tuttle comet. No bigger than a grain of sand, the particles burn up as they hit the atmosphere, producing trails of light that shoot across the sky. It is expected to peak at around 11pm and continue through the night. Those in the countryside will have a clear sight of the shower, but even those in cities affected by light-pollution will be treated to as many as 10 meteors an hour. For those who want to get the most spectacular views Stonehenge in Wiltshire and Mam Tor in the Peak District near Sheffield are the places to be. Bright white streaks of light will be most visible in rural areas with clear, cloudless skies.With the moon setting early, there will be extra dark skies, making the display even more striking. Sky News weather forecaster Lucy Verasamy Cloudy skies could obstruct the view for people in northern Scotland and eastern parts of England though.
